Comilla Victorians beat Mashrafe bin Mortaza's Sylhet Strikers by seven wickets in Thursday's grand finale in Mirpur to clinch their fourth Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 title.
Holders Comilla reached their target of 176 with four balls remaining to take themselves to a new height as no other team have won more than three titles.
In contrast, Mashrafe suffered defeat in a BPL final as captain for the first time after winning on four previous occasions – twice with Dhaka and once each with Comilla and Rangpur Riders.
Sylhet gave a great account of themselves throughout the tournament after struggling for the most parts of the last eight editions but under Mashrafe's leadership and new owners, the Strikers finally advanced to a final.
Comilla however, proved to be a step too far for the Strikers as the Victorians won an incredible 11th match in succession.
Opener Liton Das laid the platform for the victory with a 39-ball 55, featuring seven fours and one six, before West Indian big-hitter Johnson Charles took over the charge, hammering an unbeaten 52-ball 79 with the help of seven boundaries and five maximums.
With 379 runs including three fifties, Liton finished as the tournament's fourth highest scorer and once again showed why he is one of the core members of the Victorians alongside Mustafizur Rahman and Imrul Kayes.
Liton also got a few 30s and 40s, enjoying a consistent campaign to continue from his prolific run-scoring ways with the national side across formats.
His teammate, player of the final Charles registered his second significant knock in this edition, the other being the undefeated 107 against Khulna Tigers.
Comilla earlier won the toss and elected to field, which is a common phenomenon in any night game at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, considering the dew factor.
Sylhet needed a quick start from in-form opening pair Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy, but Comilla spinner Tanvir Islam made an early breakthrough to send the Strikers onto the backfoot.
The first over of the final, bowled by Andre Russell, cost 18 runs where two boundaries came from overthrows but Comilla bounced back from the second over to halt the run flow.
Hridoy (nought) was cleaned up the second delivery he faced while trying to play a cut shot off an arm ball from Tanvir, BPL 2023's joint highest wicket taker, in the second over.
Mashrafe came out to bat at No 3, just like the second qualifier when the gamble had paid off, but this time the veteran all-rounder failed to make an impact and got out scoring just one run.
Shanto then formed an important partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim and these two added 79 for the third wicket to put Sylhet back into the game.
Player of the tournament Shanto was brilliant with the bat yet again as the left-hander crossed the 500-run mark as the first Bangladeshi in BPL history, scoring 65 of 45 with nine fours and one six.
After Shanto's departure, Ryan Burl and Thisara Perera went back to the pavilion quickly but Mushfiq was solid at the other end and kept the scoreboard ticking along with delightful shots all around.
Mushfiq was unbeaten on 74 off just 48 deliveries with five fours and three sixes as Sylhet finished their innings on 175 for seven.
