I am bored of making the same old point of how PSL sides are wasting talent I thought I would do something different; make a composite 'bench' squad to get the point across. Put simply, any domestic player who is an existing member of a squad but did not feature in any of the opening games for the side was eligible to be picked.

Playing XI:

1. Nasir Nawaz (IU)
2. Ahsan Ali (QG)
3. Haris Sohail (LQ)
4. Saud Shakeel (QG)
5. Danish Aziz (QG)
6. Umair Masood (LQ)
7. Aamer Yamin (KK)
8. Amad Butt (IU)
9. Zafar Gohar (IU)
10. Musa (IU)
11. Irfan Khan (MS)

Bench:

12. Sahibzada Farhan (IU)
13. Agha Salman (LQ)
14. Hasan Khan (LQ)
15. Usama Mir (KK)
16. Umar Siddiq (MS)
17. Asghar (QG)
18. Mohammad Hasanain (QG)

What talent! What waste!

Optimists might say the bench strength simply shows how strong the squads are this year. Perhaps, but so many of these players are in form and, more importantly, possible contenders for the national side. Instead they are being made to warm the bench largely because teams are making some very odd selection decisions. It doesn’t take a genius to work out many of the sides have looked unbalanced. There is certainly talent being wasted, particularly when you look at the performances of those who played instead. A few examples:

Samit Patel: 2-0-19-0 and a dropped catch

Ahmed Shehzad: 0 (1)

Sohail Tanvir 4-0-36-0

Ravi Bopara: 3*(3) and 2-0-33-0

Brendan Taylor 2(3)

Overseas quota per side should be reduced to 3. It’s too many right now especially considering the quality of overseas players is at such a low.

Makes the case for two emerging players all the stronger...

But i am told here the likes of fletcher, samit etc are star players. That team you posted will have a serious chance of winning if they get 1 more hitter.

95% of those hyped up youngsters/domestic stars are going to be extremely mediocre at the international level.

Yes, exactly. It is such a strong XI.

Forgot to mention:

Junaid Khan: 4-0-40-1

I guess if you put them together in a squad like this, these names should be more comfortable in expressing their natural talent. They do not seem to show what they can do as regularly as they should once they are a part of teams/squads that are filled with international and current national superstars.

Teams so far going in with a lot of 'experienced' and 'safe' options... would be nice if they'd trust their own players a bit more. The likes of Samit and Shehzad really shouldn't be playing when there's superior options on the bench.

Disgraceful there is no change here- all still being benched!

Quality of overseas players is pathetic. The reason many good Pak players get benched.

So they are not allowed to play less than 4?

1. Nasir Nawaz (IU)
2. Ahsan Ali (QG)
3. Haris Sohail (LQ)
4. Saud Shakeel (QG)

9. Zafar Gohar (IU)
10. Musa (IU)
11. Irfan Khan (MS)

Bench:

12. Sahibzada Farhan (IU)
13. Agha Salman (LQ)
14. Hasan Khan (LQ)

15. Usama Mir (KK)
16. Umar Siddiq (MS)
17. Asghar (QG)
18. Mohammad Hasanain (QG)

Players in bold have played at least one match. Still a lot of players missing out.

Two things stand out:

i) pretty worrying the number of players on this list (in bold) who ended up being key players for their teams, despite having to wait ages for a game. Points to incompetence.

ii) still a lot of talent being wasted
