Pakistan has topped the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings for the first time after wet ground at the Queen Park Oval, Port of Spain, denied India the opportunity to defend the top spot which it had reclaimed from Australia on 17 August.

The result of the fourth and final Test means India won its series against the West Indies by 2-0, finishing on 110 points – one behind Pakistan and two ahead of third-ranked Australia. Following the Sri Lanka-Australia series, India had needed to win the Port of Spain Test to retain the number-one Test ranking.

India had entered the series on 112 points, 44 points ahead of eighth-ranked West Indies. And because the rankings are weighted to reflect this difference, India’s failure to win by a better margin has resulted in it dropping two points and the West Indies earning two points.

The Port of Spain Test has also brought down curtains on what has been highly competitive and entertaining six weeks of Test cricket in four different parts of the globe which saw the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings top spot change hands three times inside five days.

In Africa, New Zealand beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in Bulawayo, England and Pakistan played out an absorbing two-all drawn series in England, Sri Lanka swept aside Australia 3-0, while India beat the West Indies 2-0 in the Caribbean.

For Pakistan, Misbah-ul-Haq’s side has become only the fifth team after Australia, England, India and South Africa to top the ICC Test rankings since these were introduced in 2003. Pakistan has dropped to as low as seventh three times in the past 13 years with the last being in January/February 2010 following the three-Test series in Australia – 10 months before Misbah took charge of the side.

Pakistan’s steady progress to the top of the summit can be judged from the fact that it had entered in its home series against Australia in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in October 2014 in sixth position, while it was ranked fourth when it hosted England in a three-Test series last year in the UAE.

Misbah was delighted to become the first Pakistan captain to inspire his side to the top of the Test rankings, when he said: “There is no greater feeling than to achieve the number-one ranking in the most traditional and purest format of the sport. This is what cricketers play for and want to achieve in their careers.

“Number-one ranking is a reward for something we had planned as a group a few years ago and have worked extremely hard to achieve it. To top the Test table, which boasts some of the best sides and players, is something to be very proud of.

“I want to compliment everyone who has been involved in the process, including all the players, the support personnel, the management, as well as our loyal fans and followers who remained committed to us and continued to back and support the side through the good and not-so-good days.

“For us, the number-one ranking is not a destination but part of a journey. Our long-term objective and strategy is to remain competitive, continue to challenge the top sides with good cricket and once again become the most followed side like the Pakistan teams of yesteryears. If we can achieve these on a consistent basis, then I am sure there will more laurels like this down the line.”

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson congratulated Pakistan on achieving the number-one Test ranking. “Misbah and his side deserve our heartiest congratulations. The number-one ranking is well deserved and a testament to the quality of cricket the team has consistently played over the past few years.

“The past few weeks of Test cricket have been incredibly absorbing with some high-quality competitive series being played, exhibiting what is so special about Test cricket. The battle for the top ranking has made it even more exciting for all fans.”

To mark Pakistan’s number-one Test status, it will be presented with the ICC Test Championship mace. The details of the presentation ceremony will be announced in due course.

The battle for the number-one ranking between the two traditional rivals will resume in September/October when New Zealand will visit India and Pakistan will host the West Indies in the UAE. Both the series will be three-Test rubbers.

The Test team rankings are updated at the end of each series. The ODI and T20I team rankings are updated after each match.

Yeah, stupid to schedule it during the rainy season and it shows the flaws in the current FTP program. This is what happens when tours are organised bilaterally, if the Windies series was going to be a money maker then there's no way it would have taken place in August. Instead, it gets shoved into wherever there is a gap in the calendar in between the games against bigger teams, IPL windows and the rest of it.

What an achievement MashAllah!!

Banished from home in 2009, drowned in controversy in 2010, in comes Captain Misbah - an absolute legend MashAllah!! What a performance by all the boys over the last few years!

True but even with the same rain, this test was on if the grounds had decent facilities.

Misbah you beautyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...

We should build monuments of Misbah outside major stadiums.

congratulations, fantastic achievement.

TBH I don't know which of the top 4 team really is the best team right now but for now one should praise Pakistan for their successful series in England where even Aus has struggled in the past.

Congratulations to all people (Indians as well) - for the first time two South Asian sides at top of world (& the 3rd one helped them to reach there). Cricket truly is becoming a South Asian game.

It would have been a great occasion for a IND-PAK 5 Test Series. I think, last time an Ashes between top 2 sides in world took place in 1961.

Great day for PP & befittingly in the month of August.

Best of wishes against WI, NZ, ENG & AUS in coming months.

True but even with the same rain, this test was on if the grounds had decent facilities.

I'd ask Giles Clarke and Srinivasan to lend them a few quid for a Super Sopper but they'd probably point at advertising revenue spreadsheets and tell me to get lost.

Congrats Pakistanis.

West Indies Trolled Indians in the Final Test.

4 Days of Sunshine and yet not a single ball bowled. Even in my local play ground during childhood days, the ground used to be ready after 1 day after heavy rains.

Cannot attract new Fans to Test matches after results like these.

Misbah ji the warrior.

I told you - couple of matches are going to be ruined. But didn't ever expected to happen that in 4 days of sun shine.

I hope, similar things doesn't happen in NZ series as well - both series in SAF & IND is played in odd season. I believe, sometimes in early 90s, 2 of 3 IND-NZ Test was ruined by rain.

We rise from adversity, even playing on exile we reached the number one spot thank you Misbah ul haq khan niazi sahib.

Misbah tumay salaam!

Celebration are about to be started!

Congratulations Pakistan. Incredible really for a team which never plays at home.

Well done too to India for being right up there too. I presume that they will regain top spot during their packed home season.

Congrats Pakistan..can't grudge you top spot after your recent performances. All the best for your future games.

Misbah smashed a straight six out of the ground. What an achievement. I have been following pak cricket since what 1996 and for the first time no 1.

Amazing!

This is interesting even number of matches and points are same for number 1 and number 2 team.

Is it happened for the first time? (I have seen same rating but same number of points and matches is new for me)

A moment to savour .
Another milestone in Pakistans grear cricketing history .
The culmination of playing solid test cricket over the last few years.

Tears, on topping the Test rankings

Yes brothers, Am an Indian but trye fan of Pakistan cricket...

Every time Pakistan loses(which has been t case more often than not in LOIs) my friends would troll and make fun of me...

I had to stand by my team...and tried my best to avoid them...

Knowing some day Pakistan side will truly make me proud

And Alhamdulillaah today when I read India-Wi match has been declared as a draw..

And I read quotes of Misbah and David richardson...it filled my eyes wit tears...

Post 2008-not allowed in ipl, no series wit Ind
2009-Cricket thrown out of Pakistan
2010-Whole world called Pakistan as a stain on cricket...,2 world class bowlers were out..., no captain to lead t team
2014-Ajmal banned

And still tried their best...and drawn a series I n England against England...which no one expected

And now world no.1.....

Really left wit no words...only wit filled eyes and heart..Thanks Pakistan

I am a bit confused - then why India is 2nd, because even at 10th decimal, point will be same. I guess, this is before the 4th Test at PoS ended.

Congratulations Pakistan Team! You guys played well.
Like NZ cricketers, Pakistani cricketers seem to be well behaved players.

Badhai ho dost. Well deserved. although I am equally upset that Ashwin was robbed off a chance to get seven wickets to fastest 200.

My three moments of cricket watching career (LOL)

Today
When Pakistan won the world series 1997
The t20 WC win

I couldnt be happier though its only a confirmation.

So after 6 years we might be at the top of ODI rankings also and we might be praising azhar ali then.

My three moments of cricket watching career (LOL)

Today
When Pakistan won the world series 1997
The t20 WC win

I couldnt be happier though its only a confirmation.

my moments:

Today
that sharjah miandad match
bangalore in 1987 vs india
the wc final of 92
the wc semi final of 92
bangalore 2005
karachi 2006
the wt20 final

and there are tons more that I cant simply recall at this moment in time but those are some of the main ones that come to mind.

But nothing beats today. After everything we have had to endure to be number 1 is one of the greatest acheivements in sport. End of. None of the teams playing today would be able to do what we are doing. Exiled, boycotted, ridiculed. "they" thought they could isolate us and watch us die slowly. Well I hope "they" choke on it now!!

What a timing MQM clever tactic of hijacking media

Thanks to MQM attack on ARY News office and press club now whole media is discussing that news instead of Pakistan Test Ranking.

I was wondering how must Waqar Younis be feeling right now.. He was just 4 matches away from being coach of a team who would achieve number 1 test ranking. He must be happy that we are number 1 but he would have loved to be our coach at this moment.

I started watching cricket in 1996 and my first heart break came very early during WC 1996 qf.

Yah Karachi , mohali and Bangalore were special too and the match when razzaq skittled out Sri Lanka with his reverse swing when all hope was lost.

Congratulations guys. I won't say that I'm feeling really happy atm, but there's no doubt about the fact that Pak have played some brilliant cricket in last couple of years and if any team truly deserves to be at the top of the rankings that team should be Pakistan. :sree

Biggest achievement by Pakistan since I've been watching cricket

Unbelievable really

Never though I'd see this day.

I always felt one day and t20 World events were more likelier due to the nature of events where a few weeks of crazy form and luck can propel you to a title whereas for #1 Test ranking you can't do any shortcuts

Great day
