Stokes and Archer star in Super Over as England lift the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup for the first time

England are the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup champions for the first time after Jofra Archer held his nerve to help beat New Zealand in a nail-biting Super Over at Lord’s.

The Black Caps needed two to win from the final ball but a superb throw from Jason Roy in the deep saw Martin Guptill agonisingly run out, as Kane Williamson’s side finished runners-up for the second successive men’s World Cup.

Jimmy Neesham had struck a magnificent six to leave New Zealand with seven to win from four balls but Archer’s resolve shone through, with England prevailing due to scoring more boundaries in the match and Super Over combined.

Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes struck 15 from their allocated six Trent Boult deliveries – and it was that pair that England had to thank for giving them a chance amidst a dramatic finale earlier in the day that saw both teams finish on 241.

Eoin Morgan’s side had coincidentally needed 15 to complete their chase in Boult’s final over, with a superb six over midwicket the perfect way to start for Stokes.

But the drama was only just beginning, the next ball seeing a return from the deep ricochet off the all-rounder’s bat and fly to the boundary for another six runs to his name.

He, Adil Rashid and Mark Wood then scampered the two runs from the final two balls – coupled with two run-outs – to ensure both sides finished level after 100 overs of pulsating cricket.

Stokes and Buttler had taken England’s target down to double figures after being reduced for 86 for four in the 24thover, thanks to superb bowling from New Zealand’s fast bowlers, defending 242.

Roy (17) was caught behind off Matt Henry, while Joe Root (7) fell to the same fate to the exceptional Colin de Grandhomme, who conceded just 25 runs in 10 overs.

England Captain Eoin Morgan lifts the World Cup with the England team after victory for England during the Final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between New Zealand and England at Lord's Cricket Ground on July 14, 2019 in London, England.

Jonny Bairstow was then bowled by Lockie Ferguson while the same man took a stunning catch to dismiss Morgan, before Stokes and Buttler led the England recovery with their partnership spanning more than 20 overs.

Slowly but steadily the runs flowed, Buttler carving Boult over extra cover to bring up his 50 from 53 balls while Stokes followed him to the milestone in the same over, England needing 53 runs from 36 balls.

Buttler began to free his arms but the wicketkeeper soon perished for 59, substitute Tim Southee taking a superb catch in the deep to give Ferguson his second wicket.

The drama continued, Liam Plunkett and Archer falling in the same Neesham over to sandwich a towering Stokes six, which Boult had caught before stepping on the boundary.

Still the over had more to offer, the last two balls seeing Rashid and Wood both run out coming back for the second as England scored 14 of the required 15 to force the Super Over.

Batting first, New Zealand had raced to 22 without loss within four overs as Guptill took a liking to Archer, an uppercut six and free-flowing four helping him find form.

But his enterprise was cut short when Chris Woakes’ probing opening spell saw him trap the opener lbw for 19, giving captain Williamson another early entrance.

Patience then took over as Henry Nicholls and Williamson battled their way to 91 for one from 20 overs, their eventual 74-run partnership their best for the second wicket this World Cup.

It fell to Plunkett – so often England’s middle-overs saviour – to once again produce the magic, Williamson (30) edging through to Buttler before bowling Nicholls (55) off the inside edge.

Ross Taylor then became the second Black Cap to pass 1,000 men’s World Cup runs but soon after he fell, lbw to Wood in the first ball of his new spell.

England then kept a strangle on proceedings as New Zealand went 14 overs without a boundary heading into the latter portion of their innings.

But the patience of Tom Latham eventually bore fruit, two fours and a six helping him to 47 with helping hands from Neesham (19) and de Grandhomme (16) seeing New Zealand finish on 241 for eight.

Plunkett and Woakes both ended with three-wicket hauls, following in the footsteps of Derek Pringle back in 1992 in registering three scalps for England in a men’s World Cup final.

But where Pringle missed out, these England bowlers prevailed – as Morgan’s side became the first first-time winners since Sri Lanka became ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup champions in 1996.

Scores in brief:

New Zealand tied with England, at Lord’s, London. England won the Super Over via boundary countback

New Zealand 241-8, 50 overs (Henry Nicholls 55, Tom Latham 47; Chris Woakes 3-37, Liam Plunkett 3-42)

England 241 all out, 50 overs (Ben Stokes 84 not out, Jos Buttler 59; Jimmy Neesham 3-43, Lockie Ferguson 3-50)

Player of the match: Ben Stokes (England)

Player of the tournament: Kane Williamson (New Zealand)

What. A. Game. Wow.

England fully deserved it. They have a fantastic team, they're a very close-knit group and you would be laughed at if you said they'd get anywhere near the trophy in 2015.

Congratulations great game.

Feeling sad for New Zealand.

Yet if Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid were on New Zealand, your post would have been the exact opposite.

Though Feeling sorry for nz

Feels really sad for nz that over throw resulted in thier defeat even they lost super over because of that boundry rule really feel sad for nz

Congratulations England, but to win it because England scored more boundaries (Tied Super over rules) will only haunt the Kiwis for the rest of their lives.

Is Archer a time Traveller? The guy has tweets for just about every future event.

Both teams scored 15 runs in the super over so why did England get awarded the cup?

4.39am.....what a match and i have to wake up at 7am for work. Congratulations Engalnd what a game you and New Zealand put on.

Well deserved. This team and their victory deserves a documentary. It all started in 2015, when Straussy became director of cricket and England decided to change their style of cricket to something totally new. They started badly and got owned by SRL, and Pakistan but bounced back well.

Commiserations to NZ, they deserved it as much as England but there could only be one winner.

Fantastic match of cricket, just beautiful!

This guy man. Lol.

Congratulations to their supporters, hate to see em win but yeah you are the champions now.

Congratulations to all England fans. People can say NZ played better, but this is not about only one match, it is a 4 years long journey so England have deserved it.

Congrats England.

Very gutting for me as an NZer. So so close.

Its 6:45am here and now gotta go to work on no sleep.

Worthy champions. They deserve this success after all the hard work they've done to reform their white ball cricket after the miserable showing in the last WC.

This is the best WC ever and mark my words, we will never witness a better final in our viewing lifetimes.

Maybe third time is the charm, your team played superb cricket. Don't lose heart.

IF SUPER OVER IS TIED PLAY ANOTHER SUPER OVER...KEEP ON GOING HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE

I had money on egland but england didnt beat NZ really but Im happy for englad, but this super over rule has to be changed.

It’s more relief really. Lost three finals. KO’d in two semis. Finally won it.

Either of the teams would have been deserving winnners ... but England turned lucky and NZ’s luck finally ran out with those rules and 4 overthrows ..

England dosent deserve anything. Not many will accept them as world champions. At least I wont. For the spirit of the game, those four bye runs should not have been awarded.

NZ were the better team, but it seems the stars were aligned for England with that Ross Taylor decision, the first ball of the England innings and of course the deflection off the bat.

Congratulations to England but that 6 rule needs to be looked at, that’s what ultimately won them the game

Congrats england, shame there had to be a losing team. Well played kiwis.

What a silly rule, in tennis they carry on goin in the last set until there is a winner..

Why wasn't it wickets and why boundaries.. DL counts wickets not boundaries...

It’s just another stupid rule to add to the net run rate one when it should be on head to head 1st

Congratulations to England. Well deserving champion. 4 years of fearless cricket.

Really feel for Kane and his pack of wolves.

Next world cup is Pakistan's InshaAllah! :)

did anyone notice the last ball by archer was actually a wide, guptil just had to leave it!!! why dont batsmen take free wides rather than trying to hit balls pitched outside leg

Is this for real? This guy might want to change his profession. :))

A remarkable game of cricket that'll be talked about for a very long time.

Congratulations England, comiserations to New Zealand. Sport can be so cruel but they can hold their heads up high.

Wonderful game of cricket. New Zealand were slightly the better team today, but the way England has absolutely revolutionized ODI cricket in the past four years, we have got to hand it to them. The players they have backed have been fantastic, not just for England, but the whole cricketing world.

Well deserved. Commiserations NZ, you just never gave up. Best tournament final, ever.

Let's Take A Moment To Congratulate England, The ICC World Cup 2019 CHAMPIONS

Look, the silly overthrow rule was heartbreaking and it did leave a bad taste in our mouths.

However England TRULY deserved this WC for their planning and hard work.

What did they do:

1. They went and ANALYZED the game with data instead of relying on fattu analysts we see on TV and newspapers who know very little about the modern game.

2. They understood the modern era ODIs and built a team full of dynamic bats.

3. They realized that attacking cricket WILL result in loss of wickets so they built a team that could bat deep.

4. They realized they need to have multiple bowling options (Woakes, Jordan, Plunkett, Rashid, Ali, Stokes with Joe Root who can roll his arm over). This helps a team (even if they have inferior bowlers) as CSK has shown it time & again in IPL.

5. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, they backed themselves to play the way they had envisioned which helped them CRUSH India, NZ and Aus on the way to finals.

What could have gone wrong:

1. They could have choked. Which they almost did. But they recovered well.

2. Their bats could have got out hitting out like idiots which is what most of us thought. I certainly thought it would happen but I was wrong.

What worked out which no one expected

1. Buttler and Stokes showed amazing compusure to rebuild the innings which I have NEVER seen an
English side do.

2. Plunkett was bowling amazingly well in the middle overs. Woakes struck a rich vein of form.

---

Yes, NZ were robbed of a WC victory but spare a thought for England.

They played in a pitch that didn't suit their strengths (in their home WC) and yet they overcame a collapse to win it.

In the finals.

Take a bow England.

If this isn't the perfect advertisement of planning, data analysis, hard work and belief...nothing will ever be.

A lot of teams with dinosaur analysts could learn a thing or two from this success story.

I am truly heart broken that NZ lost but England didn't do anything wrong.

Take a bow champions. You deserve it.

Every poster here knows it deep down in their hearts.

Stokes has proved that he is a champion of the game and he has built a legacy which everyone will remember ever.

Buttler also has proved that he is not a bottler. He is a really fantastic fantastic cricketer.

Well said OP.

Look that was a cruel end but the World Cup winners ought to be the best team, and the best team in ODI cricket was crowned. England beat New Zealand in two bilateral series, in the league stage, and had a higher league position as well as higher NRR.

Sorry, they actually didn’t outright win the match, so shouldn’t be called ‘WC Winners’ - if anything its a mockery of that term. We should probably call them Ad-hoc WC leaders or something.

Flat Track Bullies got the tracks the needed. When they didn't they lost. They didn't get a flat pitch today, they got insane luck and still could only manage a tie.

Best team my a**.

eng destroyed aus in the semi, beat nz and india in the group stage, nz played well but apart from smashing India when the top 3 choked they lost to eng, aus, pak comprehensively and scraped past SA and bang.

of these two, the better team over the course of the tournament won

and as far as the boundary rule goes......... when push came to shove boult stepped on the boundary, santner didn't attempt to score off the last ball, nz made two crucial mistakes, england didn't, and at the end of the day thats the margin of victory, not the boundary rule.

so congratulations to England, for winning the world cup, and showing over the last four years no matter how bad things are, if u have a plan, you work hard and show some guts you can reach the top.

I agree with OP. We all may despise England but they have built a brilliant team. Well done to them.

This victory just describes cricket perfectly. It's 95% hard work and dedication and 5% luck. And that 5% makes the biggest difference in the world no matter how good that 95% may be

I disagree strongly. How they prepped up for the game, what the team rankings were, how they reached the final does not matter in a KO, especially in a WC final. The fact is that they didn’t actually win the match, they fluked it because of an arbitrary technicality. So can we really say they were the better team on the day or they deserved the WC today? Making both the teams joint-winners was the fairer result & nobody would have complained against that.

If anything is to blame, then it should be something that was in New Zealand's control, not something that was pure luck.

Boult's catch on the boundary. Cost the game for the kiwis.

This final is probably the greatest ODI of our lives.

Both teams gave their everything.

It's like one of those anime fights when both characters are bruised and bleeding after an intense battle.

And I'm a neutral! :afridi

PS: why are people so bitter at PP. Goodness gracious, it's over and England are the new champions. Get over it
