I think we should all congratulate India on an immense achievement.

It's not easy to adapt to the different bounce and pace in Australia or South Africa. Pakistan has just failed to do so against a South Africa deprived of De Villiers, Morkel and Abbott.

India have planned well and executed superbly, and they should be very proud of their achievement.

The batting has improved since England and South Africa, and the bowling has been dominant even though R Ashwin barely contributed at all.

It's the greatest achievement in Indian cricket history, and I salute them.

Well played, credit where credit is due. Very well played, how sad I can only dream of Pakistan doing something even similar now.

Thanks brother Junaids. Still disappointed that rain and bad light robbed us of a 3-1 thrashing !

Congrats Team India. Finally.. i am sure Ganguly/Kumble will be burying their demons. They came very close in 2003.

Well done to India! Dinner is on my Indian roommate today, so I can eat away the pain of Pakistan's loss in SA :hasan

Batting has improved but no where their best combination yet. They just have three out of top seven who are established players. even one among those three is been downhill for the last two years. What is good to see is that they did with contributions from other than Kohli. Pujara, Bumrah, Pant, Shami, Agarwal, Jadeja all should be commended..

Congrats to India

Well done!

The record books will show India won a test series in Australia and won’t have any asterisks regardless of what haters will say about this win.

Pant, Agarwal, Bumrah, Prithvi, Vihari, Kuldeep all around or under 25 and have played hardly any test cricket. This augers well for future.. having these kind of highs at the start of your career allows these guys to grow up believing in their abilities.. htey will not carry any demons like Kumble/Tendu/Dravid carried around overseas tours. Except India to boss teams in next decade in test cricket.

Thanks brother Junaids. Still disappointed that rain and bad light robbed us of a 3-1 thrashing !

I also read your post about India winning 5-1 in SA, I didn't know about that. Depressing how behind we are, disgusting actually.

Off topic: I wonder how Prithvi Shaw feels not being part of this historic moment :shezzy2

India have played brilliantly. No doubt that they are the number 1 test team in the world. Congrats to all Indian PPers.

India doing so much right at the moment. Their domestic setup is producing so many talented players, why isn't ours? We need to learn a lot from them.

A lot of people will obviously point to the absence of Smith and Warner, which possibly could have had a significant impact on the outcome of the series.

However, this is the culmination of a decade of culture change in Indian cricket, which has included the genesis of the IPL and the World Cup win in 2011. Nobody should underestimate the impact of this on the psyche of up-and-coming cricketers in India.

They have the player of this generation in Virat Kohli, the bowling and batting fire-power to support him and the resources and system in place back home to keep producing more cricketers.

World cricket beware.

Congratulations to Indian fans. This is a massive achievement.

I'm not sure that I agree.

Pakistan has lost in South Africa due to:

1. Two inadequate openers - like India had until six weeks ago.
2. A past-it blocker in Azhar Ali - India don't seem to hang on to has-beens as long as Pakistan, or to view them as the future like Pakistanis often do.
3. Picking the wrong attack - India had the guts to play Pandiya in South Africa.

It's not all doom and gloom. India are a much better team in Asia than Pakistan are, but outside Asia that's not necessarily the case.

Pakistan play 2 Tests in Australia at the end of this year in unique conditions which require 4 quicks - the WACA in Perth and a Day/Night match at Adelaide. I think Pakistan could easily draw or even win that series with sensible selection and an early arrival in Australia.

Congratulations again to India - they did not make the self-inflicted errors that Pakistan just has.

Thanks guys. Historic moment. Loved what Che said when asked what his plans are for the next 6 months - F.C. and county cricket. The silent hero.

Australia will not be this weak again. Smith and Warner wiil be back. And only Indian batting can handle Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins. Ours would fold in 2 sessions.

I can see your point about kicking out the poor batsmen, but the problem is, we don't have any replacements that are even close to their Indian counterparts.

Che deservedly is the MOS. I have a different view regarding Kohli. While he may not have been prolific compared to his lofty standards , he has contributed to this win. His 30 odd on the second innings at Adelaide to forge a partnership with Pujara when first innings lead were virtually cancelled out and his 80 odd at MCG were invaluable in the wins. Also the best technical innings of this series was his at a fiery Perth pitch.

Should have been 4-0 whitewash but rain took one and the genius combo of Kohli-Shastri another. Still.

I also read your post about India winning 5-1 in SA, I didn't know about that. Depressing how behind we are, disgusting actually.

That is only in ODIs to be fair. Pakistan should do better in the next test and in the ODI leg . No Morkel, AB etc. This team is weak and ripe for the taking. I haven't seen your ODI squad but Shan Masood absolutely has to play .

Everyone apart from our captain knew that we had wrong openers. Not only wrong operner but wrong approach. Both Rahul and Vijay (and pujara too) would have done well if htey were left to play their games. instead of that our captain wanted them to be over aggressive.. in SA/Eng you need to give the first session to bowlers.. we often used to be four down by the time ball last its shine..

regarding Pandya, right thought but Pandya is not yet ready..

Junaids since you have a very soft spot for all rounders and you mentioned about him, I would like to take your views on Hardik Pandya. Do you think he has a future in this Indian test side?

"Firstly, I want to say I've never been more proud of being part of a team, than this one right here. The boys make the captain look good. By far, this is my biggest achievement. It's at the top of the pile"

Great statement from Kohli, giving the whole team credit and staying int he background.. Wadda captain!

First series win in Aus and it came due to ,

CheteshwarPujara193SCG2.jpg

and

Bumrah.jpeg

One batted 1200+ balls to suck life out of Aus attack. Another bowled with great pace and moved ball both ways. Two champion performers.

Well Played India! They played very well in SA and Eng as well. They have team to play in all conditions now.

Congrats to Indian PPers. Well deserved victory. Credit goes to Indian batters and Bumrah in particular. Aussies were weak, no doubt but the way Pujara and co blunted their world class bowling attack is commendable.

This is one thing i have seen from him.. he is quite a class fellow as soon as he stops fielding :)

Thanks Junaids and others for their wishes. Phenomenal achievement though a 3-1 scoreline would have been a better indicator of the gulf in level between the 2 teams this series. Hopefully this is just a start and we don't get too ahead of ourselves, our amateur blunders in SA and England should not be forgotten. We had the quality to win at least in SA but a plethora of mistakes punished us, maybe a separate thread so as not to digress.

Junaids I think Ashwin's role in this series result deserves credit. He did a very good job with the ball in Adelaide. And his batting was crucial, 25 (76) won't show the importance on the scorecard but played a big role in our recovery from 125/6 on day 1 in the most challenging batting conditions of this series. That partnership with Pujara IMO was the series changer, otherwise a 175 all out scenario would certainly have meant going to Boxing Day test 0-2 down. That also lends weight to your theory of lower order needing to contribute with the bat especially outside Asia. Pity Ash got injured because I think he could have rectified his overseas stats against this Aussie line up.

Would have been our greatest achievement had it come against a better Aussie side, I personally won't rate it above 1971, a year when we won our (and Asia's !!!) first series in West Indies and England, unlike this Australia both those sides had serious quality including a few ATGs.

Well played India! The key thing is Kohli did not score as much as he usually does but others stepped up and made it count.

Special mention to Agarwal who stepped off the plane and started scoring immediately.

For all his faults, i really admire Kohli for always backing up his team both in success & failure as good man-managers invariably do, something which our kaptaan needs to learn quickly. Congrats to the Indian team & its supporters, a very well deserved victory.

Also to be noted. Paine called India “probably the best bowling side in the world”. Great feeling.

I am happy they won with a young team. I was so looking forward to Shaw piling up runs here. He and Gill Can't wait to see them bat together.

"It's not so much the number of Tests but the number of balls that this Indian batting line-up has made us bowl. That takes its toll," --- Paine

Monkey off the back. I would not be surprised if India win another series in Australia within the next two tours.

keenly following Indian cricket for the past 24 years.....this is definitely most sweetest after that 2011 WC win

Junaids since you have a very soft spot for all rounders and you mentioned about him, I would like to take your views on Hardik Pandya. Do you think he has a future in this Indian test side?

Yes, absolutely!

India's attack was perfect for the weak batting that they encountered. But if Smith and Warner had been there they would have had to drop a batsman and play Pandiya.

Not because I think Pandiya is a good bowler - I think he's about the level of Faheem Ashraf. But if you are going to have to bowl 100 overs in an innings, which they would have had to, you have to keep your three best quick bowlers fresh and at their fastest.

India has done well, but they have some problems ahead. Bumrah is great, but I think Shami and Ishant are fairly ordinary, just too good for this Australia.

Ishant has played 4 series in Australia, and I think he's been the same bowler every time.

1. In 2007-08 he took 15 wickets in 4 Tests at 27.
2. In 2011-12 he took 5 wickets in 4 Tests at 90.
3. In 2014-15 he took 9 wickets in 3 Tests at 48.
4. In 2018-19 he took 11 wickets in 3 Tests at 24.

So I don't think it's a vintage Indian team - I think the bowling attack is good but the batting is not that special.

But they have beaten the opposition put out against them, and I congratulate them on it.

Fair enough. You're probably one of the few who rate him here but I do get where you are coming from.

I disagree on Ishant though. Even going by the numbers you shared, he's improved leaps and bounds from an average of 90 to 24.

A lot of people will obviously point to the absence of Smith and Warner, which possibly could have had a significant impact on the outcome of the series.

This is a very good observation. What people observe is the tip of the iceberg (test series win in Australia). What goes unnoticed is the consciuos and unconscious effort that has gone into making it possible.

1. Support system- Players being supported by BCCI, BCCI being supported by public, Public being supported by a growing economy.

2. Great mentoring and support from part legends that hand over cricketing legacy from one generation to other. There was smooth transition of captaincy from Dhoni to Kohli and a great support system is in place. Youngsters just have to look up to the seniors and they are there to help.

3. Great support staff- Let us not underestimate the hard work done by the support staff. The bowling coach and batting coach are the unsung heroes who have done research and planned how the batsmen would deal with opposition bowler and how the Indian pacers would bowl to the opposition batsmen.

4. Stress on physical fitness- Kohli is a fitness freak and that has rubbed off in his players. Physical strength and fitness leads to mental toughness, and that leads to self belief. This is something that was lacking in past generation of Indian cricketers (who on paper has better "talent" but were unable to harness that talent)

5. Bench strength- We keep hearing from some that absence of Smith and Warner reduced this Australian team from a top team to Australia D. In case of Indian team, one keep losing first choice players and continues to find their replacement. How many of us even realise that our first choice keeper Saha was lost to injury and our first choice opener Shaw was lost to injury as well. But their absence did not reduce India to India C or D. Their replacements were just as good. There are lots of great talent waiting for their chances.

5. Clear long term vision- It is very important. This vision remains constant and does not change just because the personnel change.

The above are some of the factors that makes it worthwhile for a Indian cricket fan like me to follow this Indian cricket team. I have faith in the abilities of this team that I never felt in the abilities of any of the past generation teams.

It is a series win that was long in coming, but it is just the beginning. I am cautiously optimistic that a test series win in South Africa too could be achieved next time India tours there.

First of all, congratulations to India for a fantastic achievement and a great year that could have easily been three overseas series wins, instead of just one.

Their bowlers were superb and their top-order batsmen showed patience and great mental strength all throughout. The openers leave a little to be desired but I’m sure Rahul will find his form soon enough. He’s too talented a player not to.

Having said that, with the intensity of the Australian tour to India in 2017, this series felt a little, FLAT.

That is no part due to either team’s doing but the lack of quality star batsmen playing for Australia. A nation that heralded Bradman, Ponting, and Smith at the coveted Number 3 has had to suffice with Marcus Labuschagne.

If that is not a call for help in Cricket Australia, I don’t know what is.

Nonetheless, India have left no doubt as to why they deserve their Number 1 ranking.

Shami is way better than the great Amir, Shaheen etc
I think that this is the problem.

I'm not detracting from the wonderful achievement of winning this series in Australia.

But after 40 Tests Mohammad Shami averages 30 with the ball, exactly like Mohammad Amir.

After 90 Tests, Ishant Sharma averages 34 with the ball, exactly like Wahab Riaz.

After 10 Tests, Jasprit Bumrah averages an excellent 22, quite a bit worse than Mohammad Abbas.

So let's be clear about this. India has won in Australia because they batted and bowled well enough to defeat an opposing Aussie team in which the only 2 international class batsmen were suspended.

And Pujara and Kohli were wonderful.

But the three key bowlers - Bumrah, Shami and Ishant - have career records remarkably similar to Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz.

So it's a great attack by Indian standards, but it's at exactly the same level as the current crop of players available to Pakistan......who don't excite any Pakistanis!

"It's not so much the number of Tests but the number of balls that this Indian batting line-up has made us bowl. That takes its toll," --- Paine

Pakistan under Misbah ul Haq has adopted the same approach. Only difference is that atleast in India, the batsmen around Pujara keep the scoring rate up which relieves the pressure on him whereas Azhar Ali just becomes a night watchman

Bowling averages of bowlers of a team should be considered not in isolation, but alongwith the batting averages of the batsmen of the team. Bowling averages may be similar, the Indian batting averages are in 40s and 50s and that makes all the difference in the fortunes of the team.

Pakistan and India have the came culture but too completely different and contrasting positions and results in world cricket, there can be no better template for the pcb and pakistan cricket to follow, emulate and look up too

Lol for the Pakistani bowlers to make up for the frail batting averages of our batsmen, they needed to have bowling averages in the low 20's and below 20.

Having a bowling average of 30 plus is not going to cut it if the batsmen are averaging in the low 30's and below 40 with abysmal strike rates as well

Bowling averages of bowlers of a team should be considered not in isolation, but alongwith the batting averages of the batsmen of the team. Bowling averages may be similar, the Indian batting averages are in 40s and 50s and that makes all the difference in the fortunes of the team.
Yes, I agree.

India has a bowling attack roughly the same as Pakistan's, but aligned with a superior batting line-up.

Australia and Pakistan are facing the exact same problem in their test team, playing undeserving players and selecting low averaging players, ttfs but Australia with a billion dollars in tv deals have all the resources, means to help themselves in comparison to an internationally boycotted Pakistan

So as I said before, Mitchell Starc is back to having almost the exact same stats as before the reverse swing started to go crazy in 2016 in Sri Lanka.

And Hazlewood is back to being the same unremarkable line and length merchant he was in England.

Congrats India for the achievement. I thought India would lose 2-0 with a couple of draws similar to what happened last time. The bowling has been amazing. Not sure when India will play the next test series but I'm eager to see Shaw and Agarwal combo at the top. Rahane is still a weak spot. Jadeja or Pandya can play the all rounder spot. Pant's batting is great even though his keeping needs to improve fast. Great days ahead.

With this achievement past Indian teams will not be a patch on the current team

No it's way better. This is you again doing omissions/lies using overall averages compared to form in last 4-5 years.

Shami averages 29.54 compared to amir's 30.73 (post comeback 32.04 that too bullying Ireland, WI).

Ishant in last 5 years averages 28.56 compared to Wahab who was averaging 34.60 in the last five years. Ishant is a bad bowler who has become a good one, Wahab has been consistently bad throughout his career (maybe less bad than early Ishant but still bad). Difference between the first and second is that the first case will win you matches in the second phase of his career while the second won't win you anything. So using overall averages to show that they are equal is a very clever tactic.

And Mohammad Abbas has the honeymoon period which all players have initially (also got favorable conditions/batting lineups). Was poor against a half decent batting lineup in NZ and now poor in SA (where Bumrah was lethal bowling to a lineup with ABDV).

Except Abbas all the Indian pacers (including Bhuvi) have higher ICC rankings than all the other Pakistani pacers.

w00t - series win in Australia!

Thanks to OP and congrats to all Indian posters here. We are now officially in the "Beating convicts in their home" club.

Special mention to few wrist slitters who after Eng series defeat saying Ind has got no chance downunder whatsoever. Well, optimistic ones like us knew we played some outstanding cricket in both SA and Eng and was only a matter of time before our bad luck runs out and we actually win a series. The exact same thing happened in this tour where everything clicked together and we won the series handsomely.

Cheers to more :ravi

Hilarious that Jadeja's 81 eclipsed any score made by the Australian batsmen all series.

Congrats India

Indian batsmen deserve so much credit, especially Pujara. With Pritvi Shaw coming back and Gill playing soon, this batting has so much more potential.

I know Bhumrah has special but more credits needs to given to Shami and Ishant. They have been world class throughout the year. It's a very good bowling line up.

Also - Kohli's smirk at the post-match when he said that Australia were a very talented team and it was fun playing against them haha.

Special thanks to indian team management for selecting Jadeja and not playing wannabe all rounder Hardik Pandya who only perform once in 5-6 innings. :inti

Despite winning the series 2-1, Indian test rating points remained at 116, same as it was before the series. A test win in the fourth test would have taken it to 118. So this rain robbed India of two valuable points in ICC test ranking table.

An Indian team of the past would have allowed this Australian team batsmen to come good big time with centuries galore and it would have been another lost opportunity. I am happy that Indian bowlers kept the Australian batsmen down.

Australia next play Sri Lanka at home. I have no doubt that the same Australia will hammer Sri Lanka blue and black in that test series, with all the Australian batsmen back in "form".

You still have chance to thrash them 3-0 in ODI series. It would be epic if AUS drops below BD in the rankings.

ODI series tbh has no meaning apart from getting the combination right for upcoming world cup. The real deal was the test series and its over now.

Both Jadeja and Pandya are terrific cricketers. Our talent pool is too large to select XI.

Time to get Gill in place of Rahane.

Shaw
Agarwal
Pujara
Kohli
Gill
Vihari
Pant(wkt)
Ashwin
Jadeja/Ishant
Shami
Bumrah

Shaw, Gill, Pant trio together!

Errr...why Ashwin? Its high time he retires. Too many injuries and a liability in the field. Kuldeep anyday over Ashwin.

Yes but I think we have home seasons ahead barring the NZ tour. So, Ashwin will still be effective. But yeah, either of three will do the job IMO.

While this is an ATG Australia bowling attack, sans Warner and Smith, this is a laughably weak Australian batting lineup. So there will be some asterisks when the Aussies were missing their two best batsman.

That being said, the Indian seamers outbowled the Australian ones and that alone is a huge deal.

Even the Test series isn't very real deal given Aussies were missing their two best batters. Imagine if India were missing Kohli and Pujara for a tour.

Using your logic, all test wins achieved by Bangladesh have some asterisks attached to them.

If Kohli and Pujara were missing for a home series (or even any series in Asia/WI), India would still easily win.

Sachin and Ganguly were missing in Australia's win in India. Does that win have an asterisk too?

But Aussies were playing at home and were not on a tour. In home conditions, even without Kohli and Pujara, I expect us to beat any side in the world.

Need to build a new dynasty out of this stepping stone.Next aims win wc(2023),2019 unfortunately not possible due to lack of middle order.Win in SA and go and win in England, this team has embarassed us most recently in this decade.Future indian test side within 1-2 yrs -

Prithvi shaw
Mayank agarwal/KL rahul(if form back)
Che Pujara
Virat Kohli
Shubman Gill
Risabh Pant
Pandya/Vihari
Ishant/Kuldeep/ashwin
Jadeja

Pace Bowling reserves -
Ankit rajput/Avesh khan/Shivam Mavi/Umesh yadav/Bhuvi/Mohammad siraj

Priority now phase out rahane for gill.Number one priority.
Settle in Prithvi shaw.
Phase out ishant for siraj/rajpoot/avesh.
Phase out ashwin for kuldeep.Blood mayank markande if he has another successful ranji season.

Well done team India a great achievement being the first Asian nation to win in Aus.

Even the Test series isn't very real deal given Aussies were missing their two best batters. Imagine if India were missing Kohli and Pujara for a tour.

India will still be firm favourites to win series against any other Team at home.

But Aussies were playing at home and were not on a tour. In home conditions, even without Kohli and Pujara, I expect us to beat any side in the world.

Our 2 most important players in a home series would actually be Ashwin and Jadeja.

If we're playing Aus at home without those two we'd still beat them if not whitewash them.
