What's new

Congratulations to India for winning the 4th Test and series against Australia

One thing for sure is that there's a lot of bench strength available now.

With the likes of Kohli back in the team, touring away to England wouldn't be as difficult as it was before.

Just need to let Rohit-Gill opening partnership settle a little so that there is some continuity. As for Mayank Agarwal, I don't know if he's short of confidence or what, but he doesn't seem like himself right now. Probably just a bad series for him, should get back on his feet against England.

India is at it's strongest right now, both as a team with players, and with their confidence levels. They have spat on Australia's hard work, and really shown what team they are with the authority that they played with.

Should look to whitewash England at home, and boost the confidence even more.

In my opinion, in the next two years, we will see a great surge from India, pushing to be one of the greatest test teams in the history of the game.
lol, not event close, this is the peak for them. All down hill from there.

The peak is a good peak to have, but they will be in the middle of transition soon and new players will come in meaning they cannot get better.

Well deserved series win, but they're not dominant.

They can't beat us or England at home.

I'd say us, Aus, India and England are more or less on the same level and capable of beating each other depending on venue.

You are not def AUS either home/ away. You have a mental block against them. Guess you lost the prev home series to AUS!

Confidence can do a lot to a player, even more to a team.

The WTC Final promises to be action packed, and I really look forward to seeing teams compete.

Are New Zealand confirmed finalists? And what is the requirement for India to qualify?
Not yet, India are pretty much in and just need to win 2 Tests against England.

Aus can't afford to lose a match against SA or they're out, that or 2 draws. I can't see 2 draws so SA will need to win a Test for NZ to make it to the Final.

Either way, India should want Aus because they have the wood over them and at Lords it would get ugly.

Yeah, we can't beat them. No idea why how we played so bad when a India D team just beat them.

Congratulations India! Your turn to dominate world cricket?

What an incredible series victory! Congratulations to every Indian fan over here. They have every right to feel proud of this effort. I think that the fearless newcomers were the obvious key here. Gill, Thakur, Sundar etc., and above all, Rishabh Pant! He´s the man! He´s finally proving what he is made of. A couple of great innings in this series.

I don´t usually follow all these bilateral series anymore, but was closely following this one. I think that it´ll be most unfair to Rahane if Kohli is brought back as captain. Rahane has deserved the right to stay as the leader of this team in Test cricket.

Congratulations Indian fans, great win. Showed a lot of fight and hung in there, and as I know Aussies aren't usually that respectful towards Indian Aussies I guess that makes it even sweeter.

Another 5 years like this and this India can be ranked near the great Windies and Aus. But it requires a better showing in England next time (losses in NZ can be excused as they have their own GOAT NZ team right now, though beating them should also be on the bucket list).

Home dominance will continue obviously, so this leaves England and NZ as the final frontier. Maybe a WTC win on the cards too?

Fantastic win against Aus and well deserved. Absolute brilliance, I have to say.

India has never won a test series in South Africa that is their final frontier

One of the greatest tests of all time! Definitely the greatest series victory of all time. Definitely Greatest comeback of all time in any sport. Bowled out for 36! Without best Batsman of all time and TWO best bowlers of current generation! WOW. Thank goodness Pak don’t have to play this team.

Well deserved series win, probably one of the greatest overseas series win purely because the vast difference in experience between the two teams due to injuries etc.

I'd say India has also taken the unpredictability tag from Pakistan as well.

BCCI gives 5 Crore INR bonus to winning team

Just a remarkable win...To go to Australia and win a test series in this way ..will be remembered in the history of indian cricket forever ..Bcci announces a 5 cr bonus for the team ..The value of this win is beyond any number ..well done to every member of the touring party..
— Sourav Ganguly (@SGanguly99) January 19, 2021

Does this bonus cover non-playing members :vk1

He could earn the whole bonus with one endorsement... but still :ua

I truly hope Mohammad Siraj gets 1crore out of the 5, he deserves it. Pure humble, kind and the most lion hearted young lad I have seen to date.

In truth, this miracle victory was clinched by the wicketkeeper who can't catch and the net bowlers who were 18th, 19th and 20th in line for a spot in the team.
Awesome win.

Congratulations to all Indian fans.

In my opinion this Test win should go down as their greatest one - beating Australia not just in their backyard (again) but also at the Gabba which is a fortress for them, and then chasing down 330 on the final day against a decent bowling attack with a depleted team too. And of course winning the series after getting out for 36 in the first Test.

For any true cricket fan this should go down as good as winning the World Cup - as a Test fan that’s how I would feel anyway.

Well done India and congrats Indian fans. Stunning win for all the reasons we all know. One to cherish and remember for a very long time, as it should be.

Most wishes and admiration from Pak and other non indian PP'ers were genuine and heartfelt. Thanks for this - shows our passion and love for the game has no boundaries.
Good luck to PAk against SAF
:salute

BCCI congratulates Team India, announces cash reward

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday congratulated the Indian Cricket Team for registering a 2-1 Test series win in Australia. It was a series that showcased grit, determination and resilience of the highest quality.

To bounce back after a defeat in Adelaide, come back strong with a win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), grind it out for a draw at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) & breach Fortress Gabba after 32 years shows the character of this team.

The Board applauds the efforts displayed by the team on and off the field & the way they have carried themselves through adversities on what has been a Test series of epic proportions.

The BCCI is proud of this magnificent feat and has announced a cash reward of 5 crore INR to the team.

Mr Sourav Ganguly, President, BCCI: We are extremely proud of the series win. Beating Australia in Australia by a young team will remain etched in the history of Indian cricket forever. It cannot get better than this. I am so proud of everyone. Congratulations to Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Shastri and the rest of the touring party for this remarkable feat.

Mr Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary, BCCI: Heartiest congratulations to every member of the Indian cricket team. The team overcame the odds, injuries and a tough opposition and showed great character, resolve and courage to win the historic Test series in Australia for the second time in a row. This success on Australian soil will inspire the next generation of cricketers.

Mr Arun Singh Dhumal, Honorary Treasurer, BCCI: Proud of all the players and the support staff of this triumphant Indian side who have clinched a 2-1 Test series win to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The toughness this team showed was simply remarkable. The young crop of players showed tremendous maturity. This win will augur well for Indian cricket.

Credit where credit is due, probably the greatest test series win I’ve seen in my lifetime, 35+ years. India played out of their skins especially after the 37 all out. The mental strength it would have taken to bounce back especially in aus can’t be downplayed. I think this squad is on its way to goat status , about time some one put these arrogant Aussies in their place.

A word of appreciation for Ravi Shastri

He was part of that Indian team that should have won in Australia in 1985-86 but were denied by biased umpiring at Sydney & rain at Melbourne

Glad to see him win in Australia as manager twice in a row. They said he was the best captain India never had due to BCCI petty politics. I thinks he got his dues as a manager !

Either way, India should want Aus because they have the wood over them and at Lords it would get ugly.

SA will make it tough for AUS to qualify, but SA's batting is at it's weakest in recent times.

Plenty of new names who aren't accustomed to overseas conditions.

Bowling is still excellent though.

lol, not event close, this is the peak for them. All down hill from there.

The peak is a good peak to have, but they will be in the middle of transition soon and new players will come in meaning they cannot get better.

Pretty negative viewpoint.

It will take years before they have to enter that phase of transition.

However, you are right in one aspect, that most of the team is 30+ and will eventually retire/get dropped around the same time.

But in the few years that they have left, they can reach new heights and create a great image of their test team.

Gill is taking that opening spot, and in a few years, Mayank/Prithvi will be opening with Gill consistently.

KL Rahul will make a comeback to the middle order, and the likes of Sundar and Thakur will be played overseas more often.

When Ashwin's time comes, Sundar will replace him.

It looks to be a good few years for Indian test cricket.

Great words by little master here.

Many Congratulations. Even as a Pakistan cricket fan, this series gave me many enjoyable moments, first it was the 36 all out :) , but then after that its been seeing Australia get thrashed by an Asian tiger. :)

especially enjoyed the 5th day play of the last two tests which was well worth the willow tv subscription as a pure cricket fan of the highest level format. no t20 or odi game can match those moments on final days of test matches.

good to see Australian arrogance broken through by the young, strong hearted, wounded tiger team.

Really remarkable what they achieved was while playing pretty much more than half their A/B team while losing key players throughout (often in the middle of a match too!).

wish Pakistan could see such heights one day too.

Not at all.
Why would we want to face aussies in a final at Lords . LoL
We want the kiwis.
Just bcoz you won a series in home conditions doesn't mean you are better than Australia.

Nah, the thing is we can beat you and our players are better equipped to play the moving ball as we saw when you toured NZ last year and never made it to day 4 for any of the matches. That too with none of our batsmen in great form. We're only going to get better with the likes of Conway, Rachin Ravindra etc. being blooded into the team. Jamieson has only gotten better since then as well and if we can get Lockie going for Tests another phainty awaits India :vk2

But you would already be use to that :virat

Lot of leaps and sweeping assumptions. When we are bothered to prepare for a series we usually do well. We have actually won series in both those places that obviously the cope brigade want to now refer to as the final frontier. In neutral conditions despite the weaknesses your have to back india to beat either yourself or England with the team being the way it is.

How was England? :broad

Heck how was the prep for the WC SF when your top order was knocked over for 4 runs :vk2

Its simple
I would love to face a team which never won a tournament in their history instead of facing Aussies who are well known for clutch performances in finals.
I hope South Africa wins one test.

No connection between these two events.
No team would like to face the aussies in a final over newzealand if given a choice. I think its pretty self explanatory.
Even if we neglect the history of newzealand in finals still Australia is a better team than nz , better in both batting and bowling.

WoW unreal series win this
To put into perspective, these players dint play!!!

KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Virat Kohli, Hanuma Vihari, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah - with Umesh and Kuldeep Yadav

Heartiest salutes or congrats to India

India at Brisbanetook tenacity and mental resilience in Sport to regions of the sublime and attained moral glory as few teams have ever done.Reminded one of an army resurrecting from the depths of despair to reach the pinnacle of glory.Cheteshawr Pujara was the epitome of grit and determination while Rishab Pant was defiance or agression personified.Pant gave a classical knockout Punch to steer India to glory but the architects of the win were Shardul Thakur and Washington Sunder in the 1st innings.

After losng key players through injuries I rank this win amongst India's 3 best series wins over and test victory amongst its 5 best ever.Considering the wicket to me it is India's 3rd best performance ever in a run chase to win a game.

I have never seen such a depth of tenacity by India ever if you recount the repairing jobs at Sydney and Brisbane and the revival at Melbourne.Nor have I witnessed such dashing killer instinct as Pant displayed who struck the pedal on the accelerator like an army batallion launching a combing operation.I can't forget the shots executed even by Washington Sunder with 49 runs needed of 7 overs which propelled India into banging the final nails in the coffin for a famous win.

Beset by a series of injuries India took courage, tenacity and chivalry to a zenith or scale rarely reached.Never in cricket have I witnessed a team fight so unflinchingly in the last innings of a test match,to give such a sensational twist. In addition t spectacularly rose like a phoenix from the Ashes at Melbourne.I have never seen such a clinical effort by a team reminding me of a military batallion with perfect co-ordination,performing any repair job to perfection.Very rare have we witnessed such resilience or application in a crisis reminding one of a set of charters shaping a classic movie or play.

Victorious captain Ajinkya Rahane gets grand welcome on arrival to India

My goodness!!!

This is almost as if he's brought the world cup home.

https://youtu.be/jTcNYK1syAk

Absolutely deserves it.

This means so much to us Indians it clearly shows

Well deserved.

He lost all the three tosses and won two tests and drew another. The whole team showed great character and self belief after the 36 all-out at Adelaide.

We have two series wins in Australia now. That certainly improves our SENA stats too.

Happy for the new generation like Streetcricketer and other that couldn’t be there for 2001 series victory, this should hopefully create a new set of memories for all those youngsters.

The three imp players of the last inning- Gill, Pant, Washi probably never saw the 2001 as well..

India's fielding coach R. Sridhar talks in length about how India won Test series against Australia

He "aged 10 years in about one hour" thanks to Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar.

Team India's long-serving fielding coach R Sridhar was in the thick of things as side battled adversity after adversity before its "unreal" Test series win over a mighty Australia. And in a conversation, he opened up about the emotional roller-coaster that the tour was.

"When Rishabh and Washy (Washington Sundar) were batting, I wasn't able to cope up with tension," Sridhar said after reaching his home in Hyderabad, still trying to calm the nerves after that surreal final day in Brisbane.

"My heart rate was 120 on fitness app and couldn't help telling Rohit that main ek ghante mein 10 saal buddha ho gaya," he joked.

An integral part of the Indian team set-up, Sridhar opened about the tour in an elaborate chat, asserting it will be difficult to surpass what the team went through in the past one month - from hitting the nadir to reaching the zenith.

He touched upon the many highlights of the intense trip -- from coach Ravi Shastri's inspiring speech after the 36 all-out disaster in Adelaide to Hanuma Vihari's "miracle" batting at Sydney to the stunner in Brisbane.

36 all out and the aftermath

"After 36 all-out, you didn't know what's next. Then Ravi (Shastri) bhai gathered the team and said: 'Wear this 36 like a badge on your sleeves and you will be a great team'.

"After 40 days, it was gospel truth. Also we had five meetings in two days after the Adelaide Test finished on the third evening. Virat (Kohli), Jinks (Ajinkya Rahane) and the coaching staff discussed combination and Virat gave some lovely suggestions for the MCG Test before leaving.

"I don't think there could have been a better execution in Melbourne," he recalled the events leading up to the turnaround in Melbourne, where India won to draw level.

Hanuma Vihari and the Sydney Heist

"At tea time in Sydney, Vihari had his feet stretched wide as Nitin Patel strapped his hamstring and other physio administered painkillers. I went up to him and told Vihari, 'You owe the next two hours to your team as this team has backed you at every juncture.' "...and after those 250 balls when he came back, he could barely walk, he fell down on the chair as I went to hug him. He said: 'Sir you asked for it. This is the best I could do in this situation.' I could just mutter 'thank you.' Sridhar said Vihari's fitness took a hit as he wasn't a part of the IPL like most other Indian players last year.

"His hamstring injury is multi-factorial. Firstly, he wasn't playing IPL like others, so general fitness level was a bit less than other guys which I told him and then he stood at short leg for three Tests which also contributed to injury. But what he did in Sydney gave us belief that we could do it in Brisbane.

"Vihari is an intense, young man. He is not your normal, jovial kind of a guy. He can go into a shell very soon, and that's his strength also and it helped him in Sydney.

"Despite being on heavy dose of painkillers, which could make you a bit drowsy, he actually pulled off a miracle in Sydney. So when we got there in Brisbane, we had the belief that we could do it."

The Brisbane Chase on final day

"We didn't want to complicate anything with Rishabh and Washy and it was their own plan. They had very valid excellent plan which was based on their abilities and belief.

"When you see what they were executing, the last thing you want to do is send in information and at such times, less is more. Ajinkya and Ravi bhai said, 'Just leave these two alone. Whatever happens, we would take it, we came so far brilliantly'."

Natarajan didn't carry his bat or pads to the tour

"You know Nattu didn't carry a bat. He had his bowling spikes and trainers because he came as a net bowler and was supposed to bowl. He had to borrow one from either Washy or Ash (R Ashwin) when he was named in the squad.

"But that was the beauty. He was not any usual net bowler. (Strength and Conditioning coach) Nick Webb and (trainer) Soham (Desai) had proper strength and conditioning plan for all our net bowlers and they were an integral part of dressing room."

Talent called Washington

"We kept him here after white ball games because we didn't want Ash to bowl too much at the nets but Nathan Lyon was always going to be an integral part of the Aussie line-up so we needed our batsmen to get net sessions.

"We used Washy to bowl into the rough. When Washy would bowl to our top order at nets, I would go and tell him 'Washy, give the ball over-spin because that's the need of the hour on Australian pitches, up (pitching it up) and over spin as you have to put your whole body behind the ball, because it requires energy.' "We would tell Washy, that you may not be the lead off-spinner, but when India come back again in 2025, who knows you might be leading the spin attack with Kuldeep. Also even when he was not in original squad, he would bat for 30 minutes every day."

Leadership will now be known as 'Ravi Ship'

"Before the Brisbane Test started, Ravi bhai had one mantra, 'Nattu is no less than (Jasprit) Bumrah and Washy is no less than Ashwin, and that will be your mindset'. If you two are crossing that boundary line wearing that India cap, you are no less than the person next to you.

"Please quote me, it is unfair that you needed India's greatest Test victory to understand Ravi Shastri's contribution to Indian cricket. He was Indian cricket's 'Go To Man', when NCA needed restructuring in 2007, when IPL was conceptualised, when India needed a stop gap coach in 2007 after the World Cup exit, and also in 2014 when a Team Director was needed."

And finally, a Champagne spray and game of TT

We had a flight next morning. So first we had to pack our bags and then we went to the team room for celebration. 90 per cent people don't drink so it was just spraying champagne and then some games of table tennis which the boys enjoyed.

This is getting overboard though imo. At the end of the day it was a closely fought series win. Well played, have your celebrations but thats that.

If only the general public gave even half of such support towards other sportsmen/women in the country.

If they perform so well after braving such insurmountable odds then yes, they should, they have and they will receive recognition and support from us.
