Coronavirus in India

Btw this confirms that the original article was not written after talking to ICMR. Kind of proves she was peddling a narrative, but go ahead give her the long rope :))

She was on a deadline and had to publish it. Not sure why so much in a hurry though.

After lockdown, Covid-19 case doubling rate dipped from 3 to 6.2 days: Govt

India’s doubling rate of Covid-19 positive cases has taken a dip and currently stands at 6.2 days instead of the earlier three days, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday.

“Before lockdown, the doubling rate of Covid-19 cases was about 3 days, but according to data in the past 7 days, the doubling rate of cases now stands at 6.2 days. Doubling rate in 19 states and union territories are even lower than average doubling rate,” Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said at the daily news briefing.

“The doubling rate is lower than the national level in 19 states and union territories. Kerala, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Ladakh, Puducherry, Delhi, Bihar, Odisha, TN, Andhra Pradesh, UP, Punjab, Assam, Tripura all have low doubling rates of coronavirus cases,” Aggarwal added.

After the nationwide lockdown of 21 days and the subsequent extension, the doubling rate has gone from 3 to 6.2 days at the national level, according to health ministry data.

“The ration between Covid-19 patients who have recovered and deaths stands at 80:20 in the country, which is higher than that of several other countries suffering due to the health crisis,” the health ministry official said.

There have been 1,007 fresh Covid-19 cases and 23 deaths in the last 24 hours in India.

New Delhi: As 300 buses set out of Uttar Pradesh today to pick up students stranded in Kota in Rajasthan, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar called it "injustice" and against the principle of the nationwide lockdown to slow the spread of coronavirus.

The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has sent buses from Agra and Jhansi to Kota, the hub of coaching classes that attract students from across the country preparing for competitive exams for engineering and medical colleges. Thousands of students have been stranded since last month in the town, which has reported six COVID-19 cases.

Nitish Kumar, a key BJP ally, was vocal about his objection to the move by the Yogi Adityanath government, which he said would defeat the purpose of the lockdown at a time social distancing is critical and any gathering could exacerbate the contagion. Besides, the Bihar government believes, it makes it look like states are facilitating students yet "making excuses" when it comes to migrants unable to return to their home states.

"The way special buses are being sent to ferry students from Kota, it is injustice with the principle of the lockdown," the Bihar Chief Minister told NDTV.

His government wrote to the central home ministry three days ago when a group of 300 students from Kota arrived in Patna, mostly in taxis, armed with permission to travel.

"This will open up a Pandora's box. If you allow students, on what grounds can you stop migrant labourers who are also stuck," Bihar Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar said in the letter urging that special permits granted by the Rajasthan government be stopped.

Voicing concern about students returning in large numbers, at the risk of spreading the infection, Mr Kumar said coaching classes in Kota should be resumed in a staggered manner.

Many of the buses arrived in Kota this evening.

"The buses are being sent to bring back kids who are stuck in Kota. We are sending food, water bottles, masks and sanitisers. Each bus will be able to bring back 25 kids. Some buses will also be sent from Jhansi," a senior government official in Agra said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said like UP, other states could also make arrangements to bring back their students.

What a fine example of social distancing being practiced by Bisht!

If those students could be brought back home from Kota, what crime did those migrant labourers commit?

What a shame ! Before doing a lathi charge on these ppl police have to do lathi charge on temple authorities for conducting this event ! How come they got permission to conduct this procession ?

For people who value only power, this could have been the only result.

From 1 April, there is a 1500% spurt in no. of positive cases in MP. Every 19th patient there has died of this virus.

The beghairat party hasn't even given the state its health and home ministers, more important in these times than a bloody CM!

So much so for deluded souls claiming all is well in MP.

You want to blame BJP you are free to do it, but MP disaster lies at the congress footstep, Till 24th of March only 7 people was infected and around 11 th of April approx 50 were dead and over 500 were infected.
kaayal and other doctors have said that incubation time of virus is long, only reason 7 people were infected because Kamalnath government was not doing testing, to make his government look good, Atleast Shivraj is recognizing the problem and started doing test on large scale, they started sealing hot spot. Kamalnath hardly did any test not even 400 or 500
People were jumping quarantined and he didnt bothered to stop them, Morena case is big example.
If Anything Shivraj is doing test which is primary step in fighting virus .

MP really got lucky big time, with Kamalnath at the helm it could have like NY or even worst.
I still remember people saying see how good MP government is there are no cases of Covid 19 in MP, I am talking about initial days, how come Rajasthan and Up got so many cases, reason became very clear that Kamalnath policy was no test no case.

And you can defend your beloved party all you want. I won't defend anyone, certainly not Congress, nor AAP, no one.

Lol, you speak of 24 March! Who was destabilising an elected government for their lust of power even in those times? Why was power such a necessity during that period?

And I see you don't have any answer to MP not having its health and home ministers as yet.

And in case you didn't notice, this spurt
in number of patients is from 1 April.

Situation is good in MP currently, right?

No it is not good, but you can't blame him,I have heard, government is think about testing Indore city in large scale, every breathing problem patients. I have given the facts, you can see it, do people truly beleive there was 7 cases till 24th or 25th of March .
As I said your can dislike anybody you want, it's your choice. No matter what I write ,your preference will not change.

Spurt came when people start going to hospital when they became ill, if it came from 1st April means they were infected before 20th March and may have been easily infected others also like doctors, police and health worker during that incubation period.

Regarding my favorite party if you take last four big elections I did not vote for BJP in 2012 and 2019, and voted for them in 2014,2017 .
So my preference has a clear cut 50 percent rate

MP doesn't have a health minister because of lust of power of some selfless souls.

Political instability means you devote much of your time in saving your government, any neta worth his salt will do that, lol your selfless Shivraj won't have reacted any differently.

Point is, to forget about power in those troubled times, which obviously was beyond the selfless and patriotic party.

You really are a big devotee of Shivraj mama, aren't you?

The thing is I think he is already better than most of the congress and Aap leaders(barring Arvind Ji). Aary from one big scam, I don't remember any big scam happening in his 13 years rule, he belongs to to a rare breed a non corrupt politicians.
I know bar is not high but easily better than Kamalnath.

Lust of power is the reason why political instability happened , Kamal Nathan was made CM when he don't even belong to MP politics, RG was afraid of Sachin pilot and Schindiya, he decided make his loyals CM.
Why do you think there is a big talk about Sachin pilot and Justin Prasad also leaving Congress.
But agree with you one point that BJP shouldn't have gone for power at that time but they underestimated Kamalnath who managed to adjourn the assembly for the long time.
But I will not give free pass to Kamalnath for not doing test because there was instability, he was hiding the number like west Bengal government is doing.

So you don't consider buying out opposition lawmakers as corruption? For your information, even bigger sums of money is involved in these operations than the scams. And where does that money come from? Do I need to tell you?

Also, do you even know how many people died in Vyapam scam? Calling that sorry episode just a big scam will be a big injustice to those people who got killed in mysterious circumstances as they knew too much about something which powers be were not comfortable with.

Lol, you do love Shivraj, I see. It's ok, but I won't ever love a neta, certainly not today's netas.

If it is easy to buy MLA then BJP should make government is every state, the reason was Schindiya was not satisfied after working hard and getting nothing
I already said bar is not too high, he (Shivraj) is lesser of two evil

Doing tests? How many tests was Modi getting done during those times? And how many even close to a month later? Do you think the number of tests we are conducting currently are enough?

If yes, there is no point in any more discussions.

If not, why do you treat Kamalnath differently then?

Just because he didn't belong to MP, really? Do you know how many LS elections has he won from MP? By that token, do Modi and Shah belong to central politics?

You really are very naive in these matters, aren't you? Scindia not satisfied after working hard, lol!

Well whole of India was doing less test but MP was not even doing it, MP border with every big state where there was breakout like Maha, Gujarat, UP, Rajasthan, Harayana is close to delhi, most of the workers goes to this sate to work, and these states were giving numbers but MP was giving no covid patients
Their testing was even more bad.

You really are very naive in these matters, aren't you? Scindia not satisfied after working hard, lol!

I will leave that matter on people who live in MP and what their reaction was when Kamal Nath was made CM when they voted in assembly elections because of some other person.

Very sad case, the poor are suffering big time because of carelessness of Rich people who brought disease from Plane but sorry if it is going to offend you but you want herd immunity as a solutions which will kill millions easily this type of case will become regular.
And whose responsibility was it to get them properly screened at the airports, Kamalnath's?

Do you even know central government stopped the export of protective kits only on 20-Mar?

You do love to lay in to Kamalnath! Would you show similar affection for Modi as well?

Well MP2011 we have our different choice and matter, and good to have a discussion with you but I can't carry out doing this number of messaging any more, going to make my food as I live alone and after that have to clean room.
Have a good day.

Chennai, India - When the beating began on March 25, Parvathi* tried the usual things first, but things were different under the nation-wide coronavirus lockdown.

As her husband began beating her, she would run out into the narrow lanes of the slum she lives in to call for help from her neighbours, a strategy that usually worked. But a police barricade had been erected at the entrance of the street, and neighbours called to her from their homes to stay indoors.

The 45-year-old cook in the southern Indian city of Chennai had become accustomed to physical abuse from her unemployed, alcoholic husband in the early years of her marriage, but the violence had diminished recently, largely because of the salary she brought home every month, she said.

Under the lockdown, Parvathi's employer asked her to stay home. She was not being paid, and her husband, deprived of his daily drink, was in a foul mood.

Half an hour later, she ran out again, this time working up the courage to walk to the police barricade, and asked to be taken to the police station.

"Go home and sort it out," the officer on duty told her from behind a mask. "The police and courts are shut for 21 days."

India's National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday said it registered 587 domestic violence complaints between March 23 and April 16 - a significant surge from396 complaints received in the previous 25 days between February 27 and March 22.

One in six new complaints of domestic violence was made over a relaunched WhatsApp number.

That WhatsApp number had been out of use for some time, an NCW official told Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity, suggesting there could have been more complaints that never got through.

The NCW relies on women to report domestic violence on its fixed helpline numbers and through the post, two modes of communication that have been closed since the lockdown.

The Commission then publicised the email address of its members and began receiving complaints on social media and through its online portal. This in a country where only one-third of women have access to the internet.

Feminist economist Ashwini Deshpande analysed NCW data for the months of March and April in 2019 and 2020.

She calculated the average complaints per day and found that "there is already a jump in complaints related to domestic violence and the right to live with dignity, and a smaller increase in rape or attempt to rape and sexual assault", all within the home.

Even in normal times, women facing domestic violence in India rarely turn to the police.

One-third of women in India's 2015-2016 National Family Health Survey (NFHS) said they had experienced domestic violence, but less than 1 percent of them sought help from the police.

Their neighbourhood or community is also not always a refuge for women facing abuse.

According to the NFHS study, 52 percent of women and 42 percent of men believed that a husband is justified in beating his wife. Showing disrespect towards the in-laws topped the list of reasons respondents deemed it acceptable to subject a wife to a beating.

And these are not normal times.

'Horrifying global surge'

Most countries globally are seeing a surge in domestic violence, leading to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealing to governments to pay attention to and prevent a "horrifying global surge in domestic violence" amid lockdown measures.

But in other parts of the world, mechanisms to protect women from being locked in with their abusers have evolved to take into account lockdowns and social distancing.

The French government has promised to open pop-up counselling centres and pay for hotel rooms for domestic violence victims, who have also been encouraged to seek help at pharmacies.

In Italy, the government has launched an app that enables domestic violence victims to seek help without making a phone call.

In India, the response has been one of playing catch-up.

Lockdown measures

Some women's groups were more prepared, anticipating the surge.

Before the lockdown came into force, the Chennai-based International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care diverted calls from its landlines to counsellors' mobile phones, helped women submit documents they needed to save to a cloud-based service, and started a WhatsApp service.

"For the first week, the number of calls we get fell, and we believe this is because women were basically locked in with their abusers," Swetha Shankar, director of client services at the organisation, told Al Jazeera.

Soon after, however, women began to call late at night or from their children's rooms, and the numbers began to climb.

The stress of confinement, financial constraints and the lack of access to alcohol were exacerbating factors, Shankar said.

In Tamil Nadu, protection officers, appointed by the state, are allowed movement during the lockdown, and Shankar said some women in dangerous situations were rescued and moved to shelters.

This is not the case everywhere, federal officials told Al Jazeera. In many states, only the police are allowed to move, and requisitioning a vehicle from them was difficult.

Many women facing abuse want to go to their mothers' houses, but during the lockdown, they can only be sent to state-run shelter homes, where the risk of overcrowding and poor hygiene runs high.

"Why should a woman escaping abuse in the middle of a lockdown be sent to a shelter home where she risks catching coronavirus?" Vrinda Grover, a leading feminist lawyer who is associated with several landmark women's rights advances in India, said.

"India's Domestic Violence Act gives the woman a right to shelter. Let her stay home in her house, with her kids, and let the man be sent to a shelter home if he is going to abuse the woman in the middle of a pandemic," she told Al Jazeera.

Bunty Chand* used to work in a garment factory on New Delhi's southern border, while her husband works as a garbage collector. Her alcoholic husband's abuse has taken on a frightening edge of late, she told Al Jazeera.

Her anger crystallises in telling of the government's decision to revive a mythological TV show for broadcast during the lockdown.

"They think that we will all sit at home and drink tea and watch Ramayan [the TV show]. My husband got angry about some small thing on the first day of the lockdown and hit me and broke the TV. So there goes the Ramayan."

For Grover, the government's failure to shore up women's protection organisations and to plan for what was an expected surge in domestic violence is of a piece with its failure to protect the poor and daily wage earners, particularly migrants, from the devastating shock of this lockdown.

"Whether it is poor migrants or women, the government has shown absolutely no concern for the vulnerable in planning and executing this lockdown," said Grover.

On April 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a three-week extension of the coronavirus lockdown until May 3. For India's battered women, it is a prison sentence that only got longer.

On Camera, Madhya Pradesh Sanitation Worker Attacked, Clothes Ripped

Bhopal: A group of sanitation worker in Madhya Pradesh were attacked by a mob of locals in Dewas district on Friday when they went to a neighbourhood to clean the streets. One of them, who was attacked with an axe, has been admitted to hospital after his hand was badly injured. The shocking attack comes weeks after similar incidents in the state in which healthcare workers and civic officials were attacked locals when they went to screen residents for coronavirus.
Disturbing visuals show the mob holding sticks and surrounding the sanitation worker, pushing and pulling him. The man, with his shirt is ripped apart, is helpless as the mob with sticks drags him.

One man, Adil, who police say is the main accused, has been arrested, His brother is missing.

"Sanitation workers from the municipal corporation were working in Koyla Mohalla. Adil attacked Deepak and his colleagues with an axe. When he tried to hold the axe, he got injured. Doctors referred him to Dewas on his complaint. We have registered a case of attempt to murder and under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act," police officer Sajjan Singh said.

Earlier this month, healthcare workers and civic officials were attacked by a mob of angry locals in an Indore neighbourhood as they visited the area to screen residents for signs of novel coronavirus infection. Two women doctors were injured in the attack and had to be rescued by police. Before that, locals in another neighbhourhood in Indore allegedly spat at officials and abused them during screening procedures.

In Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal, a group of men threw stones at a police constable who was on lockdown enforcement duty. Five people were arrested and two of them were charged under the National Security Act (NSA).

With 1,310 cases, Madhya Pradesh has the fourth-highest number of coronavirus cases in India after Maharashtra, Delhi and Tamil Nadu. 69 people have died of the infection.

Nowadays I don't believe on any side whether it's Muslim or Hindu.
Its just a propaganda.

Wonderful ! So all mob attacks in muslim areas (with video evidences) on doctors, nurses are all fake and it is modi's propaganda ! wow !

I think it's a great idea for ppl who suspect these incidents to dress as nurses or doctors & actually visit those areas along with doctors to find out the truth themselves !

India sending hydroxychloroquine to 55 coronavirus-hit countries

India is in the process of supplying anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine to 55 coronavirus-hit countries as grants as well as on commercial basis, official sources said on Thursday. A number of countries including the US, Mauritius and Seychelles have already received the drug in the past few days while several others will get it by the weekend, they said.

Hydroxychloroquine has been identified by the US Food and Drug Administration as a possible treatment for the COVID-19 and it is being tested on more than 1,500 coronavirus patients in New York.

Indeed...its a matter of great pride for us that our countries flag is recognized along with some other esteemed nations. 10 years ago things like these were unthinkable considering west used to percieve us as a garbage "Third world country". It just goes to show that if a countries leadership is in correct and able hand it can do wonders.

unfortunately these type of news don't come in media, also those few muslims who throw stones at doctors/nurses get more focus than these good work by many muslims

According to latest updates government data is showing 16365 patient while covid-tracker website is showing 15635.
Well today they have done more than 35000 test

This happened in Kerala and this was an unnecessary drama. His auto was not allowed initially because of lack of documents. There was a delay in the road due to police checking. The old man was discharged from the hospital. So the son did not have enough patience to wait till the road block was cleared and to make a scene he took his father on his shoulders

Fascist country, welcome to Modi's India. May Allah grant sabar to this poor guy Ameen

India is turning into Nazi Germany at breathtaking pace.

RIP to the young man. Btw the police has been very heavy handed and over the top with people across religions. There is a video from mumbai today where a poor Hindu woman is being thrashed for stepping out. Please don’t put a religious twist on police brutality

The level of mob mentality in India is scary.

I try to stay away from IndoPak topics on social media due to its immature level but I randomly came across this. Caution is advised

What in the world is going on?

Are they trying to enforce social distancing and a lockdown?

What's the logic of 20 people with sticks roaming around and attacking a single soul for violating a lockdown?

How can one even let young men attack a old guy like this? If this is the treatment of a Sadhu, one can only imagine to think the treatment of Muslims by such goons.

The guilty seem to have been arrested. Thankfully.

I wonder if it's only because the videos made it to social media. The relaxed and casual manner with which these young goons acted infront of the police and police vehicle is scary and seems to indicate a trend and widespread acceptances.

India has agreed to send hydroxychloroquine tablets to the United Arab Emirates to be used for treating COVID-19 patients, the Gulf Arab state's embassy in New Delhi said.

India last month put a ban on exports as sales soared to secure supplies for itself as US President Donald Trump touted the drug as a potential effective treatment for the deadly virus. It said this month it would send supplies to some countries.

"The first shipment of medicine, currently on its way to the UAE, includes 5.5 million pills for treatment of patients with COVID-19," the embassy tweeted late on Saturday.

"COVID-19 Does Not See Race, Religion, Caste Before Striking": PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the COVID-19 pandemic affects everyone equally. "COVID-19 does not see race, religion, colour, caste, creed, language or border before striking. Our response and conduct thereafter should attach primacy to unity and brotherhood. We are in this together," PM Modi said in a post on LinkedIn.

"Unlike previous moments in history, when countries or societies faced off against each other, today we are together facing a common challenge. The future will be about togetherness and resilience," PM Modi said.

"The next big ideas from India should find global relevance and application. They should have the ability to drive a positive change not merely for India but for the entire humankind," he said.

I assumed it's due to violating the lockdown but initial reports suggest that the villagers supposedly heard rumors about there being thieves or organ sellers in the neighborhood and attacked the car of these three travelers. They were traveling to attend a funeral. Real reason for attack still not established yet. It just shows how harmful fake news can be.

I am also furious about the indifference shown by police in the video. They are just letting it happen. At least now we can raise this issue, imagine if we didn't have any video proof. The police would never admit its own shortcomings.

Mumbai, India - At least 36 medical workers, mostly nurses, who work for the upmarket Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai, have tested positive for the coronavirus, raising alarm over the spread of the virus in the Indian financial hub.

They are among more than 200 medics working in government and private hospitals in the city of 18 million who reportedly have been infected with the virus, raising fears over whether they are getting the proper protective equipment to deal with infected patients.

The vice president of the Clinical Nursing Research Society, Swati Rane, who is also working on the ground amid the crisis, called the issue "chaotic".

"The main source of infection today is not the COVID-19 ward but non-COVID-19 wards, operation theatres and emergency departments at the hospitals," she told Al Jazeera.

"The staff working there does not have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as opposed to those working at COVID-19 wards. They are at risk as they do not even wear N-95 masks, which are important. If complete PPE is not possible, at least give them masks, gloves and gowns."

Patients could be carriers

Patients with symptoms of the coronavirus visiting non-COVID-19 wards pose another risk, said Rane. "They could be carriers. Many of them could be asymptomatic, coming in contact with medical staff working at non-COVID-19 wards," she said.

"They then go to other wards and meet other hospital staff, not knowing they are carriers. Many of the nurses stay in hostels, where toilet facilities and a mess are common. They even watch TV together. Even if one of them is infected, it makes everybody else vulnerable to coronavirus."

A doctor working at a government hospital in Mumbai said there was a shortage of PPE. "It needs to be addressed immediately," he said, requesting anonymity.

On April 5, five organisations representing medical workers wrote to the municipal commissioner of Mumbai, Praveen Pardeshi, expressing concern over the "rise of infection among healthcare workers" in the city.

If the test results of nurses exposed to coronavirus patients are negative, the letter said, "They are being asked to join their duties without finishing the 14-day protocol of quarantine."

One of the signatories was Ranjana Athavale from the Nursing and Paramedical Staff Union, Mumbai.

Hotbeds of coronavirus

Athavale told Al Jazeera that the commission took some steps to address issues raised in their letter, but medical workers stationed at non-COVID-19 wards were still worried. "The PPE kits are available, but not enough to be given to everyone at the hospital," she said. "That is why only those directly dealing with coronavirus patients are prioritised."

Mumbai has become a hotbed for the coronavirus, which makes the availability of medical staff even more critical. The city has recorded over 2,000 cases and more than 100 deaths.

More than 16,000 people have been infected across India with 519 deaths so far.

The government of the world's second most-populous nation has announced one of the strictest lockdowns to prevent the spread the virus that has killed 150,000 people globally.

Pardeshi, the municipal commissioner, said an initial shortage of PPE had been addressed.

"No medical staff is treating any COVID-19 positive patient without PPE," he said, adding that the source of the infection was where the nurses stayed, as well as patients that went to hospital for other issues but later showed symptoms of coronavirus.

"This is something which is quite difficult to handle," he said. "It is a professional hazard. I would like to know the percentage of health workers in Dubai or Italy or UK that have been tested positive. I am sure it is significantly higher than Mumbai."

Should Indians pay for their own coronavirus tests?

Thyrocare, a private diagnostic laboratory in India, had just started testing for Covid-19, when the Supreme Court ordered all tests to be carried out free.

At 4,500 rupees ($59; £47), it’s not a cheap test. But the court did not clarify if and how private labs would be reimbursed. Panic stricken, some, including Thyrocare, put testing on hold.

An anxious federal government petitioned the court to reconsider - which it did.

According to the new order, issued on 13 April, the government will reimburse private labs for testing the 500 million people covered by a flagship public health insurance scheme. The rest would have to pay.

But the volte-face sparked a bigger question: can India scale up testing for Covid-19 if it’s not free?

India eases lockdown rules

Starting today, India is relaxing some lockdown rules. But this won’t apply to every state - some have already made it clear that they won’t ease because of rising infections.

What will change?

Agricultural businesses will be able to open. This includes dairy, aquaculture, tea, coffee and rubber plantations, as well as shops selling farming products - such as fertilisers or machinery.

Public works programmes, which are a crucial source of employment for daily-wage earners, will also re-open, but under strict instructions to follow social distancing.

Trucks, trains and planes carrying cargo will also be allowed to operate.

Banks will also re-open, as will government centres distributing social security benefits and pensions.

But none of these new rules will apply in virus hotspots, which will be marked by state governments.

Along with restrictions on both international and domestic travel, schools, colleges, malls, cinema halls and most businesses - except those providing essential services - will remain shut.

RT-PCR may remain positive for 35 days. These foreign returnees who are now turning positive in Kerala are unlikely to be infectious. Now all his primary contacts will be tested, and if any one found positive, their contacts will be again tested. Thus we go on and on like the dog trying to catch its tail. If these people were tested on day 5 and day 10 of arrival, we might have had zero cases for last one week.

Asymptomatic cases have more danger than good. The good part is they have either good immune system or authorities are testing ppl even who r asymptomatic but danger part is they will pass on the infection to old ppl or ppl with low immunity unknowingly.

Curious case of north indian states ...

India.JPG

South indian states like KL, KN have flattened the curve it seems, TN, AP, TG have around 60 cases per day and hopefully they will flatten their curve in a week or so but look at states like MH, RJ, DL,GJ,MP,UP their cases are increasing day by day ! Looks like they will take till may 2nd week to flatten their curve.

Total active cases of India will rise till 25 to 30K and then will start decreasing slowly but u never know it might increase as well as we are performing 35k tests daily now.

Coronavirus India Tracker LIVE Updates: About 80 out of 100 COVID-19 patients have no or mild symptoms of the disease, the ICMR, Delhi, said on Monday. Stating that infection prevention management is an important part of the disease management, Health Ministry said the doubling rate of the cases has gone down from 3.4 days before lockdown to 7.5 days now.

According to the latest health ministry updates, India Monday recorded the biggest single-day spike in the number of cases —1,553 cases in the last 24 hours — taking the number over 17,000. Of the 17,656 cases, 14,255 are active and 2842 are cured. At least 559 deaths have been reported in the country so far, 36 of which was reported in past one day.

One person inside the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace) has tested positive, local media reports say. More than 100 people have reportedly been asked to self-isolate.

Officials say that India's doubling time is increasing, meaning the spread is slowing down - it's taking an average of 7.5 days for cases to double now in comparison to 3.4 days a few weeks ago.

More than a 1,000 Kashmiris who were stranded in Punjab state for 20 days were sent home after they were initially denied entry because of the lockdown.

Meanwhile, Punjab state will set up special quarantine centres for police, who have been on the frontline across India to enforce the lockdown.

India has confirmed just over 18,000 cases and nearly 600 deaths so far, according to data from the health ministry.

Bijapur, Chhattisgarh: A 12-year-old girl died after making a 150-km trip on foot from Telangana to her native Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, desperate because of the extended nationwide lockdown to fight coronavirus. Jamlo Makdam, who worked in chilly fields to earn for her family, collapsed and died just an hour away from her village.

At least 20 people have been arrested in south India for violently preventing the burial of a prominent doctor who died with Covid-19.
Dr Simon Hercules' friends and family were attacked by a mob with sticks and rods when they took his body to a burial ground in Chennai on Sunday night.

Resident nearby were worried that buying bodies of patients who died with coronavirus would help spread the disease, police said.
One of his friends had to quietly bury him in the early hours of Monday without any family members present.

"He was not shown even basic humanity. Even his wife and son couldn't be there to say goodbye," Dr Pradeep told the News Minute website.

Officials have rescued six tourists who were living in a cave in the foothills of the Himalayas following the lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The four men and two women had moved to a cave in Rishikesh after they were stranded in the country with very little money.

Air, rail and road transport have been suspended since 24 March.

The six foreign nationals have tested negative for Covid-19 and have been moved into quarantine, officials said.

Meanwhile rich people’s kids are now back on bus to UP.

Every time the poor have to bear the brunt. These lockdowns are more affecting them than anybody else.

sensible-indian-fan I have learned today that mylabs are producing 150000 kits per week and are trying to increase production around 2 million per week.
Other labs are also going to do home grown kits production.
I am not sure about other labs but mylabs manage to reach production level around even 1 million kits per week it will solve big problem for India.
And as usual Chinese kits are faulty, India spend around 800 per kit for 500000 kits

In early March the alarm bells hadn’t started ringing yet in India: a country with only six confirmed Covid-19 cases, three of them in Kerala. But within a few weeks the nationwide number had increased to 17,000, with cities including Mumbai showing thousands of cases and several hospitals shutting down in panic. Over the same time, Kerala – a relatively prosperous state on the southern tip of the subcontinent – would start to “flatten the curve”. The “Kerala model” is already being held up around the world as a success story. How did it do it?

First, Kerala started from a strong baseline. Its socioeconomic development is an example of what investments in human capital can do for poverty reduction and prosperity. It has vastly higher literacy rates and better health outcomes than the rest of India; the state has long been a Communist party stronghold, although its policies remain moderately social-democratic. Some of its strengths are also weaknesses: skilled workers are the state’s major export – it receives more remittances from abroad than anywhere else in India, much of which comes from the Middle East – and it is a large tourism hub. These are two factors that expose its inhabitants to a greater risk of transmission.

The first three confirmed patients in Kerala were among the hundreds of people evacuated by the Indian government from Wuhan and quarantined during early February. However, as feared, the following weeks saw a high number of infections in the state and the confirmed number of cases increased to more than 100 by 24 March. Kerala by then had one-fifth of Indian cases, despite having only 2.5% of India’s population.

The reason Kerala has managed to come out the other side so quickly is because of its strong public health system, clear risk communication and community participation. Despite its communist rule, Kerala’s healthcare system is, in fact, highly privatised, with a healthy division of labour between the public and private sectors. This very decentralised system has withstood the test of two serious floods and another viral outbreak in recent years, often making good use of the voluntary and active engagement of the public.

Kerala’s efforts to address the pandemic had started as early as January. Indeed, its experience of dealing with the Nipah outbreak in 2018, a virus that had neither treatment nor vaccine available, came in handy. Learning from this episode, which saw a high proportion of hospital-acquired infections, the system had effective protocols in place, and stuck to the time-tested strategy of case isolation and contact-tracing, combined with an alert community surveillance system. Tens of thousands of people were in home quarantine this time, with compliance made possible via a mix of phone-based monitoring and neighbourhood watch initiatives.

A severe lockdown was implemented before the national one: schools were shut, gatherings were banned, a stricter and longer quarantine than the national norm was deployed, and a few pious people who still insisted on praying in groups were even arrested. But this iron-fist approach was matched by socially valuable outreach policies. Supplies were home-delivered, midday meals from schools were sent to children even when schools were shut, regular and clear communication channels were established to dispel fake news, migrant labourers from other states were well taken care of, and mental health helplines were established across the state. The “break the chain” campaign to limit the Covid-19 spread was particularly successful.

When unexpected events potentially exposed hundreds of people to infection, thousands of state-employed health workers and volunteers equipped with maps and flowcharts conducted aggressive contact-tracing and brought the situation under control. Kerala’s has been an all-of-government, all-of-society approach, with even students chipping in, building walk-in kiosks for taking samples, inspired by the South Korean model. In addition to using the centrally procured real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing kits, Kerala was the first state to procure rapid test kits from the Pune-based Mylab.

For most people, Covid-19 is a mild infection that can go away without treatment and can, therefore, be missed easily. It is deadly perhaps also for the same reason. As rich, muscular hospital systems across the world – which have opted for a spaghetti western-style standoff with the coronavirus – are quickly getting overrun, perhaps there are lessons to be learned from the nimble-footed, community-oriented, cautiously aggressive approach that Kerala opted for. For a state that had its first patient in January, the profile of patients (more than 90% under 60 years old, thanks to social distancing protecting the old) as well as the number of deaths (just three), are nothing but impressive.

While the curve has been flattened for now and transmission limited, the fact remains that Kerala is also riding the tiger of a strict economic lockdown in the rest of the country. Kerala aims to lift restrictions soon – a move that New Delhi has condemned . How it manages to ease the lockdown safely will depend on a large number of factors. The summer monsoon rains, the floods that will follow, as well as returning migrants will add layers of complexity. But one thing is clear: when the next wave of novel coronavirus hits, which it will, the state will be ready.
