Coronavirus in India

India is reeling from a record rise in Covid-19 cases, with the health system struggling to cope.

Some are blaming the country's political parties for pressing ahead with crowded campaign rallies for state elections.

The ruling BJP has said there is no link. "High cases have nothing to do with religious or political gatherings," Dr Vijay Chauthaiwale, of the BJP, told the BBC.

What's happened to case numbers?
India's daily case numbers began rising at the end of February after falling steadily from mid-September 2020.

They picked up sharply in March, and have reached record highs this month, outpacing the rate of growth seen in the first wave which hit India in 2020.

At the same time, India's political parties have been campaigning for a series of state elections in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

This has been going on since early March, with voting starting at the end of March, and carrying on through April.

Was there a spike due to election rallies?
The campaigns have often involved numerous rallies with large crowds - with minimal social distancing and very little mask-wearing.

Political campaigners and candidates were also seen not following Covid safety protocols.

India's election commission issued warnings about such gatherings in one of the key election battlegrounds, West Bengal state. It finally banned rallies there on 22 April after noting that many politicians weren't sticking to safety rules.

In West Bengal, there's a clear upward trend in daily coronavirus cases starting in the second part of March and then very sharp increases afterwards.

And in other election states there were similar big increases in late March or early April as well - in Assam, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

But we don't have local data for infection rates among people living in the places where the rallies were held (and who were most likely to have attended them).

Also, this timeframe for surges in case numbers is by no means unique to these four states, and is found in other parts of India as well.

For example, there are big case numbers in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.

They are not holding state polls, but they've also seen significant rises in cases over short time periods.

So there's no firm evidence as yet in the data to establish a direct link between campaign events and rising case numbers.

What's the risk at outdoor events?

The risk of virus transmission at outdoor gatherings compared with events indoors remains very low, say experts.

"Not least the fact that the virus released can be rapidly diluted through the atmosphere," says Prof Lawrence Young, of Warwick Medical School.

However, there are factors that could increase the chance of transmission at events such as political rallies.

If people are in crowded places, in close proximity to others for long periods of time, not socially distanced and without good ventilation, then infections are possible.

"There are bound to be pockets of people in confined spaces outside in close proximity to people excreting the virus. [It's a] distinct possibility that could lead to infections," says Prof Young.

Prof Jonathan Reid at the University of Bristol says that despite factors that substantially reduce the risk of transmission outside, standing in close proximity will still lead to a significant risk, particularly within 1m downwind of someone and face-to-face.

"This will be particularly significant if the individual is generating an increased number of droplets and aerosols by shouting loudly."

Scientists are investigating whether the new variant of coronavirus that first emerged in India last year might be responsible for the country's second wave.

Experts say it is possible, but there is still not enough evidence to determine any causal relationship.

Due to a lack of data, the Indian variant is not currently listed by Public Health England as a "variant of concern" - a term used to describe the UK, Brazilian and South African variants.

What are the different Covid variants?

It's worth noting that there's been a major religious festival in northern India as well since early March.

The Kumbh Mela attracts millions of devotees from all over the country, and there's been little sign of safety measures at it.

More than 1,600 positive cases were detected at this event between 10 and 14 April.

My father has been diagnosed with Covid and he has been isolating at home. To be honest, I've not slept properly the last week and the helplessness of not being there with him to take care of him has been unbearable.

My younger brother and my mom are ensuring that he gets the best care available at home and so far he is doing well. He has isolated for 10 days and he needs to isolate for a few more days and hopefully he should be good.

It really is so painful to see so many people losing their lives to this horrible pandemic.

Fingers crossed but if he’s isolated for 10 days already and his situation still good then inshallah he should be able to see it through easily

'Please help': Delhi hospitals appeal for assistance
Amid an unprecedented crisis over oxygen supply as the second coronavirus wave ravages the country, some "helpless" hospitals in Delhi are advising relatives to shift their patients to another facility, while several others have been left with no option but to use their backup stock.
Making an urgent plea for oxygen supply, Narin Sehgal, director Sehgal Neo Hospital, Meera Bagh, said the facility had 120 Covid-19 patients out of the total 150 and oxygen was left for another two hours only.
The Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, presently running on its backup oxygen supply, urged the prime minister, Delhi chief minister and other ministers for "immediate assistance".

The Saroj Super Speciality Hospital, having not received oxygen refill for the past 44 hours, is now advising its patients to shift to other hospitals. Elite hospitals like the Sir Ganga Ram, which got a refill of 1.5 tonnes of oxygen, said their present stock would last for two hours only. The hospital requires a minimum of 11,000 cubic metres of oxygen daily.

Kejriwal writes to all CMs, asks them to provide oxygen to Delhi ‘if they have spare’
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday wrote a letter to all the chief ministers of the country asking them to provide spare oxygen to the national capital.

"I am writing to all CMs requesting them to provide oxygen to Delhi, if they have spare. Though Central govt. is also helping us, the severity of corona is such that all available resources are proving inadequate", Kejriwal said in a tweet.

Delhi allotted more than its oxygen quota: Harsh Vardhan
Amid complaints of in Delhi hospitals, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Saturday said that Delhi has been allotted more than the oxygen quota it had asked for and it is the state government's responsibility to rationalise and plan for it.

"Each state has been assigned their quota for oxygen as per the production of oxygen in India. Even Delhi has been allotted more than the (oxygen) quota they had asked for, and Delhi CM even thanked the PM for that yesterday... Now to rationalise the quota in a timely manner and the responsibility to finely plan it lies with the state government," said Vardhan.

Punjab shuts iron, steel industries to divert oxygen for medical use The Punjab government on Saturday ordered the closure of operations at the state's iron and steel industry to divert oxygen for medical use. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also ordered immediate establishment of oxygen control rooms at
the state and district-level.

Ordering closure of industrial operations at iron and steel plants, said the CM in a statement, adding that the state government will convey its decision to the Centre.
The move came hours after six patients died at a private hospital in Amritsar due to oxygen shortage.

'Will hang anyone blocking oxygen supply': Delhi high court
If any official at the central, state or local administration was obstructing in the picking up or supply of oxygen, then it would "hang" that person, Delhi high court said on Saturday.

The observation came during the hearing of a plea by Maharaja Agrasen Hospital over shortage of oxygen for seriously-ill Covid patients. The court told the Delhi government to give it one instance of who was obstructing the oxygen supply and said "we will hang that man".

"We will not spare anyone," a bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Rekha Palli added. 20 patients die in Jaipur Golden Hospital Twenty people died at Delhi's Jaipur Golden Hospital, their lives ebbing as the
hospital waited for oxygen to be replenished on Saturday, day five of a crisis stemming from an acute shortage of oxygen imperilling critically-ill Covid patients in India's national capital.

Every few hours, as it has been for much of the week, hospitals across the city and its suburbs, including Ganga Ram and Max Healthcare as well as smaller facilities, sounded the alarm about dwindling stocks on social media and other platforms. Desperate for help, some hospitals approached the Delhi high court, which termed the mounting cases a tsunami.

With 3,49,691 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the total active cases in India rose to 26,82,751 on Sunday morning. The cumulative case tally in the country stands at 1,69,60,172. While the total recoveries stand at 1,40,85,110, the death toll has risen to 1,92,311 with 2,767 deaths in the last 24 hours.

In all, 14,09,16,417 doses of vaccine have been given in the country so far.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has urged the Biden administration to release doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to countries currently experiencing the deadly surge in COVID-19 cases.

"When people in India and elsewhere desperately need help, we can't let vaccines sit in a warehouse, we need to get them where they'll save lives," Krishnamoorthi said. "We are currently sitting on close to 40 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the US stockpile, a stockpile which we're not using and which we've already opened to combat COVID-19 in Mexico and Canada," he added

someone just fwd me a heart wrenching video from India.
It looks as if it's fake but some covid sick people are just dropping dead in the streets.

Y'all think Modi will get Trumped in national/state elections due to the covid situation or people are willing to give him some leeway?

Nothing to worry.

Modiji has handled covid extremely well.

Its only the state cms who have messed it up except Yogi ji.

Egg on the faces who doubted Modi.

No way!

India is still infested with too many hardcore devotees who refuse to see the kind of destruction that's been unleashed in India due to this guy's incompetence and vote bank politics.

Don't go too far, you'll find many such gullible souls on this forum itself.

BJP has selected candidates on case to case basis by candidates who has a strong image in state level. People may disagree with many agendas of BJP, but still they will vote for the candidate which ultimately will translate into a BJP win situation.

decentralization has done wonders for BJP while it was the centralization which was downfall of congress.

As Covid-19 Devastates India, Deaths Go Undercounted

Fatalities have been overlooked or downplayed, understating the human toll of the country’s outbreak, which accounts for nearly half of all new cases in a global surge.

NEW DELHI — India’s coronavirus second wave is rapidly sliding into a devastating crisis, with hospitals unbearably full, oxygen supplies running low, desperate people dying in line waiting to see doctors — and mounting evidence that the actual death toll is far higher than officially reported.

Each day, the government reports more than 300,000 new infections, a world record, and India is now seeing more new infections than any other country by far, almost half of all new cases in a global surge.

But experts say those numbers, however staggering, represent just a fraction of the real reach of the virus’s spread, which has thrown this country into emergency mode. Millions of people refuse to even step outside — their fear of catching the virus is that extreme. Accounts from around the country tell of the sick being left to gasp for air as they wait at chaotic hospitals that are running out of lifesaving oxygen.

The sudden surge in recent weeks, with an insidious newer variant possibly playing a role, is casting increasing doubt on India’s official Covid-19 death toll of nearly 200,000, with more than 2,000 people dying every day.

Interviews from cremation grounds across the country, where the fires never stop, portray an extensive pattern of deaths far exceeding the official figures. Nervous politicians and hospital administrators may be undercounting or overlooking large numbers of dead, analysts say. And grieving families may be hiding Covid connections as well, out of shame, adding to the confusion in this enormous nation of 1.4 billion.

“It’s a complete massacre of data,” said Bhramar Mukherjee, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan who has been following India closely. “From all the modeling we’ve done, we believe the true number of deaths is two to five times what is being reported.”

At one of the large cremation grounds in Ahmedabad, a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat, bright orange fires light up the night sky, burning 24 hours a day, like an industrial plant that never shuts down. Suresh Bhai, a worker there, said he had never seen such a never-ending assembly line of death.

But he has not been writing down the cause of death as Covid-19 on the thin paper slips that he hands over to the mournful families, even though the number of dead is surging along with the virus.

“Sickness, sickness, sickness,” Mr. Suresh said. “That’s what we write.”

When asked why, he said it was what he had been instructed to do by his bosses, who did not respond to requests for comment.

On Saturday, officials reported nearly 350,000 new infections, and the deaths continued to rise. At one hospital in New Delhi, the capital, doctors said 20 patients in a critical care unit had died after oxygen pressure dropped. The doctors blamed the deaths on the city’s acute oxygen shortage.

Months ago, India seemed to be doing remarkably well with the pandemic. After a harsh initial lockdown early last year was eased, the country did not register the frightening case-count and death numbers that sent other big countries into crisis mode. Many officials and ordinary citizens stopped taking precautions, acting as if the worst days were over.

Now, countless Indians are turning to social media to send out heartbreaking S.O.S. messages for a hospital bed, medicine, some oxygen to breathe. “‘National Emergency,’” blared a banner headline in one of India’s leading papers, The Hindustan Times. Across India, mass cremations are now taking place. Sometimes dozens of fires go up at once.

At the same time, India’s Covid vaccine campaign is struggling: Less than 10 percent of Indians have gotten even one dose, despite India being the world’s leading vaccine manufacturer. India’s dire needs are already having ripple effects across the world, especially for poorer countries. It had planned to ship out millions of doses; now, given the country’s stark vaccination shortfall, exports have essentially been shut down, leaving other nations with far fewer doses than they had expected.

The result could be the worst of both worlds, faster-spreading and less controllable. This is worrying scientists around the globe, who see people starting to relax their guard in well-inoculated countries even as huge setbacks in India, Brazil and other places raise the likelihood that the coronavirus will mutate in ways that could outflank the current vaccines.

In Bhopal, a large city in central India that was the site of a catastrophic gas leak in the 1980s that killed thousands, residents say the cremation grounds haven’t been as busy since that disaster.

Over 13 days in mid-April, Bhopal officials reported 41 deaths related to Covid-19. But a survey by The New York Times of the city’s main Covid-19 cremation and burial grounds, where bodies were being handled under strict protocols, revealed a total of more than 1,000 deaths during the same period.

“Many deaths are not getting recorded and they are increasing every day,” said Dr. G.C. Gautam, a cardiologist based in Bhopal. He said that officials were doing this because “they don’t want to create panic.”

The same phenomenon appeared to be happening in Lucknow and Mirzapur — major cities in Uttar Pradesh State — and across Gujarat, where, during a similar period in mid-April, the authorities reported between 73 and 121 Covid-related deaths each day.

But a detailed count compiled by one of Gujarat’s leading newspapers, Sandesh, which sent reporters to cremation and burial grounds across the state, indicated that the number was several times higher, around 610 each day.

The biggest newspapers in India have seized on the discrepancies. “COVID-19 deaths in Gujarat far exceed government figures,” read a recent front-page headline in The Hindu.

India’s population is, on average, much younger than in most Western nations. Experts say that is the most likely reason that deaths per million in India had seemed relatively low. But the number is quickly climbing.

According to excess mortality studies, Covid-19 deaths have been underestimated in many countries, including in the United States and Britain.

But India is a much bigger and poorer country. And its people are spread across 28 states and several federal territories in a highly decentralized system of governance, with different states counting deaths in different ways.

Even in a good year, experts say, only about one-fifth of deaths are medically investigated, meaning that the vast number of Indians die without a cause of death being certified.

According to the World Health Organization, a death should be recorded as Covid-19-related if the disease is assumed to have caused or contributed to it, even if the person had a pre-existing medical condition, such as cancer.

In many places in India, that doesn’t seem to be happening.

Rupal Thakkar tested positive for Covid-19 in mid-April. On April 16, she was admitted to Shalby Limited, a private hospital in her home city of Ahmedabad, but her oxygen levels suddenly dropped. The next day Ms. Thakkar, 48, died.

The hospital listed her cause of death as “sudden cardiac death,” which left the Thakkar family outraged.

“It was a lifetime shock,” said her younger brother, Dipan Thakkar. “Why would a private hospital connive with the government in hiding the real death numbers? It was an organized crime. It was an illegal act.”

Officials at Shalby didn’t respond to requests for comment.

After her situation was widely publicized in Indian newspapers, the hospital issued a second death certificate, this time including Covid-19 as a contributing cause.

Some families don’t want the truth to come out, said Dr. Mukherjee of the University of Michigan. Some want to cremate loved ones outside strict Covid-19 government protocols, and so they hide the fact that their family member died from the coronavirus. Others may feel ashamed about losing a loved one, as if it were their fault.

A political agenda may also be at play, experts said. States controlled by India’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, may face pressure to underreport, according to some analysts. Dr. Mukherjee cited the very public scandal in 2019 when Mr. Modi’s government tried to suppress data showing a rise in the unemployment rate.

When it comes to Covid data, she said, “there is tremendous pressure from the central government on the state governments for projecting progress.”

Several officials from the governing party did not respond to messages seeking comment.

But manipulating death numbers seems to be happening in other places, too. One example is the state of Chhattisgarh, in central India, which is run by the leading opposition party, Congress.

Officials in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, home to a large steel plant, reported more than 150 Covid-19 deaths from April 15 to April 21, according to messages sent to local media that were seen by The Times. The state reported less than half that number for Durg.

Chhattisgarh’s health minister, T.S. Singh Deo, denied any intentional underreporting. “We have tried to be as transparent as humanly possible,” he said. “We stand to be corrected at any point in time.”

Cremations are an important part of Hindu burial rituals, seen as a way to free the soul from the body. Those working at the burning grounds said they were utterly exhausted and could never remember so many people dying in such a short span of time.

In Surat, an industrial city in Gujarat, the grills used to burn bodies have been operating so relentlessly that the iron on some has actually melted. On April 14, Covid-19 crematories in Surat and another district, Gandhi Nagar, told The Times that they cremated 124 people, on a day when the authorities said 73 had died of Covid-19 in the entire state.

In Kanpur, in Uttar Pradesh State, bodies are now being burned in some of the city’s parks; the crematories are that backed up.

In Ahmedabad, at the Vadaj crematory, huge smokestacks pump out black smoke. Mr. Suresh, a clerk, sits in a tiny office, the door closed firmly shut.

When reached by telephone, he said he put “beemari,” or sickness in Hindi, on all the death certificates, and he referred questions to a sanitation official who then referred questions to another official who declined to answer calls.

Mr. Suresh said that his crematory handled 15 to 20 bodies of Covid-19 patients every day. As he spoke on Friday, three bodies burned on separate pyres, next to a large and growing stack of freshly chopped wood.

Decentralization? BJP?

It's a 2-man show and has been since 2014. Even Indira Gandhi had her coterie of advisors, here even stalwarts like Advani, Jaitley and Rajnath Singh have been pushed to a corner so the two theplas can take centrestage.

For instance - have they even announced the Chief Ministerial candidate for Bengal? All I see is those two couch potatoes with their grating voices on TV and online.

For years, 'devotees' of a different political disposition kept voting government after incompetent government in to office, and turned a blind eye on the casteist and communal destruction they brought about.

Modi is the reward for all the bad karmas. In a democracy, you get the government you deserve.

Leftist cry babies and pseudo-secularists have no right to complain. They are responsible for the situation
So finally in '14, bhakts turned the corner and pushed India towards all round development.

Well done on that count.

Lol, this. He couldn't be more wrong about sanghis being decentralised!

Hell, they couldn't declare their CM candidate even in Assam where they had such a free run in government for last 5 years. Perhaps, they're too scared to upset Sarma, that loudmouth turncoat.

By the way token, you right wingers will be responsible for our nation being this way since you guys have elected this govt with thumping majority both the times.

By the way, I actually agree with your larger point.

In a way, leftists and pseudo seculars are responsible for this state in India.

Just that you are quick to call out others while oblivious to your own hypocrisy is whats comical.

The only people these BJP fans convince are themselves.

Sure they can complain we are whining on a Pak forum (last desperate move as if Pakistani posters come to fight our online battles) but at the end of the day....who are they fooling.

Only themselves.

This thread is a living proof of how wrong they have been.

Always gives me a chuckle.

complaining resolves nothing. constructive criticism does.

If indeed you want to point towards alternative to BJP, which party you want to mention?

Lockdown extended till May 3 in Delhi.
Don't think it is going to solve anything. A futile measure just like feku last year who is now having a change of heart that lockdown isn't the solution.

Wah re wah! After ruining crores from his tughlaqi farmaan, he now says lockdown isn't a solution?

Nah... constructive criticism resolves nothing either.

Look back at this thread and there are a million constructive posts made by me.

Whats the use? Not like anything is gonna change.

At this point, any party is better than BJP.

So called pappu will be better than real pappu cos while he might not be an intellectual...he will consult real intellectuals.

I have mentioned this a gazzilion times already.

With that being said, i think BJP being in power will reform the nation in a way.

They will get exposed while Congress and others will be forced to change.

Meanwhile, others have the right to call out this govt without having to focus on constructive criticism all the time.

Sometimes you have to call out the frauds for who they are.

And unfortunately that's what makes me despondent - if they romp to victory in WB/Assam, and in UP next year on the back of these blind followers, nothing will change.
Assam - They'll surely win on the back on junior bigot, Sarma who said not so long back, Corona is a thing of past, no need for anyone to wear masks in Assam! Such is a health minister of a state!

WB - Not sure, however with his bottomless moneybags, motabhai has what it takes to score throne in another state which looked out of their reach.

UP - Forgone conclusion! Bisht has communally damaged UP beyond anyone's imagination.

UP...opposition is Mayawati and Akhilesh.

I think as much as a bitter pill its now...even if BJP wins these elections, its good for the nation.

Cos it shows people are willing to vote for you if you perform and are active at the ground level.

Whilst that may be true, things were quite different on ground. Sanghis dug their own grave while fomenting riots on Delhites. That was their undoing.

‘Glaring lapses...’: Parliamentary committee report flagged concerns over oxygen supply last year

“There is a strong need to ensure that the oxygen inventory is in place” for hospitals, the Committee had observed.

As India struggles with the availability of hospital beds and medical oxygen amid the Covid-19 crisis, a parliamentary committee headed by Professor Ram Gopal Yadav had flagged the much-needed measures in November last year to avoid the unprecedented situation that India is facing.

“The Committee appreciates the measures but also observes that there have been few glaring lapses in the battle against pandemic like shortage of emergency supplies, red-tapism, shortage and quality of testing kits, delay in domestic production etc,” the report titled ‘The Outbreak of Pandemic Covid-19 and its management’ read.

Regarding the oxygen availability in the country, the committee had noted that the overall production in the country was roughly 6,900 metric ton every day out of which, the highest consumption of medical oxygen was reported in mid-September when the usage was almost 3,000 metric ton of oxygen in one day.

On 16th October last year, the secretary, department of health and family welfare, had informed the Committee that the oxygen used in pre-Covid days was just 1000 ton and the remaining 6,000 were used for industrial purposes. The committee, therefore, felt that “there is a strong need to ensure that the oxygen inventory is in place” for hospitals and “oxygen prices are controlled”.

It had also appealed to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority to take appropriate measures to cap the price of the oxygen cylinders, “so that the availability, as well as affordability of the oxygen cylinders, is ensured across all hospitals for medical consumption”.

“The Committee recommends the Government for encouraging adequate production of oxygen for ensuring its supply as per demand in the hospitals,” the report stated, besides urging the government to produce more vaccines and collaborate with maximum vaccine producers on a large scale to make more vaccines available, given the potential rise in the cases.

With regard to the availability of beds, the committee had called it a “crucial aspect of the pandemic”, observing that ‘the total number of government hospital beds in the country was grossly inadequate keeping in view the rising incidence of Covid-19 cases”.

“As the numbers of cases were on the rise, a frantic search for vacant hospital beds became quite harrowing. Instances of patients being turned away from overburdened hospitals due to lack of vacant beds became the new normal. The scenario of patients holding oxygen cylinders rushing from pillar to post in search of a bed in AIIMS Patna is a testimony to the fact that they tear apart humanity. The Committee is aggrieved at the poor state of the healthcare system and therefore, recommends the government to increase the investment in public health and take appropriate steps to decentralize the healthcare services/facilities in the country” the report read.

While seeking a “convincing response” from the government on the issue, the committee said that it “fails to comprehend the underutilisation of the available resources especially at a time when people struggled to find a bed in the hospitals.”

The committee comprising of nine Rajya Sabha members, including senior leaders like AK Antony, Suresh Prabhu, Santanu Sen, Subramanian Swamy, mentioned that 3,914 Covid facilities were developed in the country with 39,820 ICU beds and 1,42,415 oxygen supported beds along with 20,047 ventilators. It had, however, said that there was more to be done to ‘mitigate’ the upcoming crisis because of “super spreading forthcoming festive events in the country and advent of the winter season”.

“The Committee observes that after a steady increase in the number of Covid cases across the country, there has been a downtrend in Covid cases. However, the Committee strongly feels that the threat of Covid-19 is still looming large on the country keeping in view the second and third wave in European countries and spike in Delhi,” it had warned.

constructive criticism is when you take circumstances in to account before/while complaining and make practical feasible suggestions instead of expecting unrealistic actions.

I did.

Go and read my old posts.

Bhai....why don't you openly come and say:

"BJP did everything properly as much as they can. People complaining are not being constructive at all."

Atleast the discussions henceforth will be clear lol.

HBS delivers when it matters the most. last lockdown, he was visiting various places for inspection 24/7.

If you have any difficulties, just tweeting him about the matter was enough and it was resolved in few hours. People could personally approach vide twitter and write their grievance and each of those were addressed.
I know all about Sarma I need to know. Thank you.

Sarma's foremost task for sanghis was to install their or their puppet governments in entire NE India which he did with unflinching dedication & means (you must know that, surely!). If you think he is any good as your health minister (or CM, post 2-May), I've nothing else to say.

Assamese people loves him for his dedication and how he steps up in emergency circumstances. the opinion of others doesn't matter much here.

As I already said, if you think he is good for you, fair enough. I know the kind of vicious person he is, from his Congress days

someone just fwd me a heart wrenching video from India.
It looks as if it's fake but some covid sick people are just dropping dead in the streets.

Lots of these stories. Please share links or proof this is actually real!

The media at times has had a big hand in creating huge panick.

Nothing to worry.

Modiji has handled covid extremely well.

Its only the state cms who have messed it up except Yogi ji.

Egg on the faces who doubted Modi.

As head of the state Modi has to accept responsibility.

If India fails it means he has failed. No hiding behind state CMs.

No one said that the BJP is an answer to all of India's problems that have accumulated over the last 70 years. People voted them in because they were fed up, and BJP was the only available alternative.

People will stop voting for BJP if another viable alternative emerges.

The problem with the Indian 'liberal brigade, is that according to them, voting anyone other than their own band of incompetents amounts to 'fascism' or 'intolerance'.

And they wonder why no one takes them seriously!

In the battle of the incompetents, BJP is rapidly falling down the ladder. So not sure what you're on about. But since you don't live here, maybe you get a sunny view through your social media.

Modi should pay a big political price for his mishandling of the Covid-19 catastrophe in India. He’s the head, the buck stops with him.

The problem is the media in India. Are they the watchdogs who will hold the government to account (as they should be) or are many of them just going to pretend it’s not his fault or worse be cheerleaders because they align more ideologically with the BJP government ?

If it’s the latter then it’s sad because no matter who’s in power they shouldn’t be get away with such a scandal, a scandle that could easily have been avoided.

Donald Trump paid the price because he bungled the coronavirus response big time, otherwise he would have romped to victory.

Likewise Bolsonaro the head of Brazil has rightfully being slaughtered for his handling, I can’t imagine him surviving after the disaster happening in Brazil.

Fine, it's good that at least in Delhi the people have found an alternative in the AAP.

So is AAP handling the COVID crisis better in Delhi, than what the BJP is doing in the states ruled by it?

Ok. It's good to know that Modi supporters are coming down to earth. From the man who was going to turn India into a Vishwaguru to being the most entertaining amongst the available clowns....

A pretty sad come-down for the invincible Modiji.

Lets ask the direct question.

It's understandable why Hindus voted BJP to a certain extent in 2014.

Pulwama had a big role in 2019.

But now that they've been appeased in the religio rhetoric, if they continue to vote nationally for Modi, I'd say, yeah they are pretty stupid.

You haven't answered my queries on your whatsappian 'mechanism of action' claim in the vaccine. thread....

So apparently what we see as Covid death count includes only patients who were in the hospitals and have their deaths specified as a Covid death.

In India many of the people are dying outside hospitals because they were unable to get deaths. Additionally some may be just dying at home but have had covid. These people are not counted in the Covid death toll.

This is why there is such a big difference between the number of funeral pyres/burials and the Covid death count.

Also this is almost 180 degrees of what was happening in US last year. Any patient dying who was suspected of having died of Covid was counted as a Covid death even if there was no proof of such.

Both stupid imo

Sad what is happening in India. Some of the images are grim.

It’s sickening that Modi bakhts on social media are busy point scoring with Pakistan...but but but Pakistan is not reporting- this should be the least of their worries.

They just can't fathom that Pak can be better in any regard or field and if it is somehow its a lie or fake reporting, such is they phobia that they would take pride on lesser deaths or cases per population etc and that they are suffering less because Bahrat is Mahaan, bahi koi had hoti hai. We still wish that they see the back of this peak soon.

I was making fun of Junaids earlier in the thread but at this point having looked at data and reporting from several sources, one can say with full confidence that the deaths are being vastly undercounted and the actual figures are easily 2-3 times over.

Almost every independent publication is saying this too

Its not under reported. the tracking system can not track when the size becomes bigger and bigger. so while the numbers might be high, if people hide their spreading, the tracking mechanism can not take them in to account.

India asks Twitter to take down tweets critical of COVID handling
Twitter withholds some posts, including some by legislators, after the Indian government issued an emergency order.

The Indian government asked social media platform Twitter to take down dozens of tweets, including some by local legislators, that were critical of India’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak, as cases of COVID-19 again hit a world record.

Twitter has withheld some of the tweets after the legal request by the Indian government, a company spokeswoman told the Reuters news agency on Saturday.

The government made an emergency order to censor the tweets, Twitter disclosed on Lumen database, a Harvard University project.

In the government’s legal request, dated April 23 and disclosed on Lumen, 21 tweets were mentioned.

Among them were tweets from a legislator named Revnath Reddy, a minister in the state of West Bengal named Moloy Ghatak and a filmmaker named Avinash Das.

The law cited in the government’s request was the Information Technology Act, 2000.

While it was not clear which section of the law had been invoked in this case, New Delhi typically uses a clause that empowers it to order blocking of public access to information in a bid to protect “sovereignty and integrity of India” and maintain public order, among other things.

“When we receive a valid legal request, we review it under both the Twitter Rules and local law,” the Twitter spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.

“If the content violates Twitter’s rules, the content will be removed from the service. If it is determined to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction, but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, we may withhold access to the content in India only,” she said.

The spokeswoman confirmed that Twitter had notified account holders directly about withholding their content and let them know that it received a legal order pertaining to their tweets.
The Indian IT ministry told the AFP news agency it asked Twitter to remove 100 posts, adding that there was “the misuse of social media platforms by certain users to spread fake or misleading information and create panic about the COVID-19 situation in India”.

The development was reported earlier by the technology news website, TechCrunch, which said that Twitter was not the only platform affected by the order.

Devastating surge
India is in the grip of a rampaging second wave of the pandemic, hitting a rate of one COVID-19 death in just under every four minutes in New Delhi as the capital’s underfunded health system buckles.

Criticism is rising that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s federal government and state authorities were not adequately prepared to handle the crisis.

Health experts said India became complacent months earlier, when new cases were running at about 10,000 a day and seemed to be under control.

Authorities lifted restrictions, allowing the resumption of big gatherings, including large festivals and political rallies for local elections.

India’s healthcare system has struggled to cope with the huge surge, with patients’ families pleading for help on social media as the country faced severe medicine and oxygen shortages.

India on Sunday recorded 349,691 fresh cases and 2,767 deaths in the last 24 hours – the highest since the start of the pandemic.

New Delhi: The COVID-19 situation continues to remain grim in India as the country reported more than 3.5 lakh new cases for the first time in a single day and also registered its biggest single-day death count on Monday.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare confirmed that more than 3.52 lakh new COVID-19 cases and 2,812 deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours.

The latest addition of figures has taken the total number of cases to 1.73 crore, death toll to 1.95 lakh and active cases to 28.13 lakh.

In a major boost to its fight against the deadlier second COVID-19 wave, India has been assured support from the United States, United Kingdom and Germany.

The US has even dispatched nearly 5 tons of oxygen concentrators to India with President Joe Biden saying America would help India just as it helped them in the time of need.

Hopefully they were atleast quarantined on arrival.

India's super-rich beat deadline, land in UK in private jets

India's super-rich beat deadline, land in UK in private jets
LONDON: India's super-rich paid tens of thousands of pounds to get to Britain by private jets ahead of the Covid-hit country being added to the UK's travel red list even as some charter flights arranged for others were denied landing permits.

The website FlightAware shows that eight private jets – which would have cost £70,000 each (around Rs 72 lakh) upwards to charter – arrived from India at London Luton airport in the 24 hours before the travel restrictions kicked in at 8.30am IST on Friday. Four of these arrived from Mumbai, three from Delhi and one from Ahmedabad.

A private jet – VT-AHI – whose ownership couldn't be immediately verified left Mumbai airport at 9.42pm on Thursday and landed at Luton airport at 6.53am IST, just an hour and a half before the landing window closed. The flight returned to Mumbai on Saturday.

Another private jet, run by global private aviation company VistaJet, had left Mumbai on Thursday night and landed her just 40 minutes before the deadline.

A Qatar Executive privately chartered jet left Mumbai at 4.59pm on Thursday and arrived at 2.34am IST. One private jet – T7-NAP – left Mumbai at 12.54am on Thursday. A Qatar Executive flight from Ahmedabad landed at London Luton airport on Thursday night.

Three flights from Delhi, too, arrived on Thursday. These include a Qatar Executive aircraft, an Air Hamburg jet and a VistaJet plane. VistaJet promotes "fine bed linen, cashmere blankets, Christofle silverware and porcelain and a curated library by Heywood Hill" on its luxury jets.

Less moneyed Indian travellers were unable to get any seats on direct flights last week. A small number of carriers had requested to operate additional flights from India as many travellers, including students, sought to fly to Britain before the updated red list took effect.

A London-based travel agency called Tickets to India had chartered a Qatar Airways flight to depart from Delhi on Thursday 22 April and had sold all 300 seats at £1,100 per seat for economy and £1600 for business. On Wednesday it said on its Facebook Age the flight "cannot go ahead as the Civil Aviation Authority in the U.K. has denied issuance of the landing permit." All the passengers were given refunds.

A spokesperson for the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said, "We received a number of requests from non-UK airlines to operate charter flights between India and the UK last week. These applications were declined, or withdrawn from the application process, as they were unfortunately unable to meet the Indian Government’s qualifying criteria in the time available. The Civil Aviation Authority is happy to consider any future requests, but these must meet the governing and bilateral qualifying criteria."

Under the current bilateral arrangements, only 15 flights a week are permitted to operate between India and the UK. All non-UK air carriers that wish to undertake commercial services to and from the UK are required to hold a foreign carrier permit.

India being added to the red list means that anyone without residency rights or UK citizenship is barred from entering the country. Those with UK citizenship or residency need to undergo 10 days' mandatory quarantine in a government-approved hotel.

Covid-19 in India: Patients struggle at home as hospitals choke

As hospitals in Delhi and many other cities run out of beds, people have been forced to find ways to get treatment for sick patients at home. Many have turned to the black market, where prices of essential medicines, oxygen cylinders and concentrators have skyrocketed and questionable drugs are now proliferating.

On Monday, India recorded a new global high for daily coronavirus cases for a fifth straight day at 349, 691.

Anshu Priya could not get a hospital bed in Delhi or its suburb of Noida for her father-in-law and as his condition continued to deteriorate. She spent most of Sunday looking for an oxygen cylinder but her search was futile.

So she finally turned to the black market. She paid a hefty amount - 50,000 rupees ($670; £480) - to procure a cylinder that normally costs 6,000 rupees. With her mother-in-law also struggling to breathe, Anshu knew she may not be able to find or afford another cylinder on the black market.

This is a familiar story not just in Delhi but also in Noida, Lucknow, Allahabad, Indore and so many other cities where families are desperately cobbling together makeshift arrangements at home.

But most of India's population cannot afford to do this. There are already several reports of people dying at the doorsteps of hospitals because they couldn't afford to buy essential drugs and oxygen on the black market.

The BBC called several oxygen cylinder suppliers and most of them asked for at least 10 times more than the normal price.

The situation is particularly dire in Delhi where there are no ICU beds left. Families of those who can afford it are hiring nurses and consulting doctors remotely to keep their loved ones breathing.

Labs are overrun and it's taking up to three days for test results to come back. This is making it harder for treating doctors to assess the progression of the disease. CT scans are also used by doctors to ***** the condition of the patient but it's taking days to get an appointment.

Doctors say that these delays are putting many patients at risk. RT-PCR tests are also taking days. I know several sick patients who found a bed but couldn't get admitted as they didn't have a positive Covid report.

Some said they didn't have any free beds and others said they were not taking new patients due to continuing uncertainty over the supply of oxygen. A number of patients have died in Delhi due to a lack of oxygen supply. The city's hospitals are desperate and some have been issuing daily warnings, saying they are left with just a few hours of oxygen. Then the government swings into action and tankers are sent, which is often enough to run the hospital for a day.

A doctor in Delhi said that was how hospitals were working and "there are real fears now that a big tragedy may happen".

Given the scenario at hospitals, Mr Tiwari paid a hefty amount to procure a concentrator - which can extract oxygen from the air - keep his brother breathing. The doctor also asked him to arrange the anti-viral drug remdesivir, which has been given emergency-use approval in India and is being prescribed widely by doctors. The benefits of the drug - which was originally developed to treat Ebola - are still being debated across the world.

Mr Tiwari couldn't find the drug in any medicine shop and eventually turned to the black market. His brother's condition continues to be critical and the treating doctor says he may soon need a hospital where remdesvir could be administered.

"There are no beds. What will I do? I can't even take him anywhere else as I have already spent so much money and don't have much left," he said.

He added that "the desperate battle to save Covid patients has shifted from hospitals to home", and even that is proving to be a daunting task as "we don't have easy access to oxygen".

Remdesivir is in such short supply that families of the patients who are being treated at home are rushing to procure it. They want to have the drug in case the patient is required to go to hospital and may need the drug.

The BBC spoke to several dealers on the black market who said the supply was tight and that was why they were charging such high prices. The government has allowed seven firms to manufacture remdesvir in India and they have been told to ramp up production.

But several promises of adequate supply from the government have failed to show any result on the ground. Epidemiologist Dr Lalit Kant says the decision to ramp up production was taken too late and the government should have been prepared for the second wave.

"But somehow the drug is available in the black market, so there is some leakage in the supply system which the regulators haven't been able to plug," he says.

"We learnt nothing from the first wave."

Another drug that is in huge demand is tocilizumab. It is normally used to treat arthritis but studies have shown that it can reduce the chances of a very sick patient needing to go on a ventilator.

Doctors are prescribing the drug mostly to patients who are severely sick. But it has disappeared from the market. Cipla, the Indian company that imports and sells the drug, has been struggling to meet the rising demand.

It usually costs around 32,480 rupees for a vial of 400mg. But Kamal Kumar paid 250,000 rupees to buy one dose for his father. He said the price was "mind boggling" but he had no other option but to pay.

Public health expert Anant Bhan says the government should have procured the drug in huge quantities as not many can afford to buy it in the black market.

"This shows that there was no planning. The government failed to anticipate the wave and plan for it," he says.

"People have been left to their own fate."

Cheating
Fake remdesivir has also appeared in the black market. When the BBC questioned a dealer that the drug he was offering seemed fake as the firm manufacturing it wasn't on the list of the companies licensed to produce it in India, he replied that it was "100% original".

The packaging was also full of spelling errors. But he shrugged and asked me to get it tested in any laboratory. The firm also has no presence on the internet.

But such is the desperation that people are willing to buy even questionable drugs. And some have been cheated as well. People are constantly sharing phone numbers of suppliers who can provide anything from oxygen to medicines. But not all of these numbers are verified.

An IT worker, who did not want to be named, said that he desperately needed to buy an oxygen cylinder and remdesivir, and he got a lead from Twitter. When he contacted the person, he was told to deposit 10,000 rupees as advance payment.

"The moment I sent the money, the person blocked my number," he said.

Desperation is driving people to trust anything in the hour of need and that seems to be fuelling the black market. Several state governments have promised to crack down on black marketing of remdesivir and some arrests have also been made. But the black market seems unfazed.

Mr Tiwari says people like him don't have any choice but to pay more.

"It seems you can't get treated in hospitals, and now you can't save your loved ones even at home."

China's Airline Suspends Cargo Flights Bringing Medical Supplies To India

Sichuan Chuanhang Logistics Co. Ltd said the airline has suspended its cargo flights on six routes, including Xian to Delhi.

China's state-run Sichuan Airlines has suspended all its cargo flights to India for 15 days, causing major disruption to private traders' efforts to procure the much-needed oxygen concentrators and other medical supplies from China despite Beijing offering "support and assistance" to the country to deal with the latest surge of COVID-19 cases.
In a letter to the sales agents on Monday, the Sichuan Chuanhang Logistics Co. Ltd, the company which is part of the Sichuan Airlines said the airline has suspended its cargo flights on six routes, including Xian to Delhi, amid hectic efforts by private traders from both sides to procure oxygen concentrators from China.

In the letter seen by PTI, the company said "in the face of sudden changes in the epidemic situation (in India), in order to reduce the number of imported cases, it is decided" to suspend the flights for the next 15 days.

"Indian route has always been the core strategic route for Sichuan Airlines. This suspension has also caused great losses to our company. We are very sorry for the unchanged situation", the letter said and sought the "understanding of its sales agents", it said. The letter also said the company will review the situation after 15 days.

The suspension of cargo flights came as a surprise to agents and freight forwarders who are frantically trying to procure the oxygen concentrators from China.

There are also complaints of Chinese manufacturers jacking up the prices by 35 to 40 per cent. The freight charges have been increased to over 20 per cent, Siddharth Sinha of Sino Global Logistics, a Shanghai-based freight forwarding company.

He told PTI here that the Sichuan Airlines decision to cancel flights has caused severe disruption to attempts by private traders in both the countries to secure quick supplies of the Oxygen concentrators to rush to India in view of the dire situation.

Now it becomes very challenging to rush the supplies as they have to be rerouted through Singapore and other countries through different airlines, which delays the much-needed supplies, he said.

The suspension of the flights owing to the coronavirus situation in India is surprising as there is no crew change in India and the same crew flies the aircraft back, he said.

India is struggling with a second wave of the pandemic with more than 3,00,000 daily new coronavirus cases being reported in the past few days, and hospitals in several states are reeling under a shortage of medical oxygen and beds.

The Chinese cargo flights besides the shipping services have been operational throughout the pandemic rushing supplies of lucrative mobile phone equipment as well as a lot of other Chinese exports to India.

Sinha also said the Chinese suppliers also resorted to "inhuman" practice of heavy jacking up of prices to cash in on the pandemic emergency.

The suspension of flights also came as a surprise to the Indian officials as it came in the backdrop of official statements offering support and assistance to India.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian told a media briefing on April 23 that China is in communication with India to provide necessary support and assistance.

"China expresses sincere sympathies to India over the deteriorating situation in the country recently," he said.

"The Chinese government and people firmly support the Indian government and people in fighting the coronavirus. China is ready to provide support and help according to India's need, and is in communication with the Indian side on this", he said.

"We believe that the Indian people will defeat the virus at an early date", he said.

COVID-19: One in five testing positive in Indian state as court says officials should face 'murder charges'

Families in India are being left to ferry their loved ones from hospital to hospital in search of treatment as the country's new coronavirus infections hit a record peak for the fifth day.

Desperate relatives have been pleading for oxygen outside in the street as many coronavirus patients have been turned away by overcrowded hospitals.

One woman said her 50-year-old brother was turned away by two hospitals and died waiting to be seen at a third as his oxygen tank ran out.

Daily infections rose to 352,991 in the last 24 hours as prime minister Narendra Modi faces mounting criticism for allowing Hindu festivals and huge election rallies to go ahead - events that likely accelerated the surge in infections.

The Madras High Court has accused the Election Commission of India of being "singularly responsible" for the second wave, with chief justice Sanjib Banerjee even saying officials should probably be "booked on murder charges" for letting the political rallies take place.

Meanwhile, officials have called in medical personnel from the armed forces to help out in COVID facilities.

While New Delhi and Mumbai have been among the hardest hit, the situation is worsening in cities and states across India as health services buckle under extreme pressure.

And bhakts want feku to be absolved of all wrongdoings! If he could be solely credited for 'defeating Covid", he should be held solely responsible for all this mayhem!

No one said that the BJP is an answer to all of India's problems that have accumulated over the last 70 years. People voted them in because they were fed up, and BJP was the only available alternative.

I don’t get people who claim that India has had 70 years of misrule but at same time for past 2 decades have also been claiming that India is a superpower or is in the cusp of being one. You can’t have both lol

Bhakts are most delusional guys on this planet. OTOH they claim nothing happened in India pre 2014, mind you that included 6 years of Vajpayee (a sanghi though a very mild version of these rioters) and 3 years when sanghis supported Janata government.

All in all, this is only to prop their master.

I was making fun of Junaids earlier in the thread but at this point having looked at data and reporting from several sources, one can say with full confidence that the deaths are being vastly undercounted and the actual figures are easily 2-3 times over.

Almost every independent publication is saying this too

Alas, the true numbers of infections as well as deaths may never be known. The poor collation of statistics and under reporting is a factor but something more sinister is also occurring.

In my ancestral village in Gujarat (pop. 11k) there have been 10-15 funerals taking place for the past week. Most of the deceased were elderly and some had underlying conditions. My parents are in regular contact with the people on the ground and the oft-repeated narrative from their families is officially the deaths are not being registered as covid related. Moreover, testing for covid is not being conducted with the same vigour as a couple of months ago.

I can appreciate that in a country like India, systems can collapse under the sheer pressure this current wave is exerting. However, politicians along with their acolytes and lackeys as well as the sycophantic media have a lot to answer for..
