Coronavirus in Pakistan

UN warns Pakistan could be hardest-hit by pandemic

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has bracketed Pakistan among the countries which would be the hardest-hit by the coronavirus, demanding a raft of measures for their relief.

UNCTAD has said in a new report that the developing countries — which according to a UN body’s tally number 170 — would need a $2.5 trillion support package this year to face the economic crisis caused by the pandemic.

These economies will take “enormous hit” from high capital outflows, lost export earnings due to falling commodity prices and currency depreciation, with an overall impact likely worse than the 2008 crisis, the report said.

Just when a lot of poorer countries were starting to find their feet, this crisis happens.

Covid-19 fatality from local transmission reported in Karachi

Another death from Covid-19 has been reported in Karachi, according to Sindh Health and Population Welfare Minister Dr Azra Pechuho.

The health minister said that the 70-year-old patient was tested for the coronavirus after he visited a hospital.

"The patient passed away early on Wednesday. His test results came back positive after his death," she said, adding that the patient had multiple health issues and had been infected due to local transmission.

Govt will extend support to every segment of society: Dr Sania Nishtar

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Dr Sania Nishtar has said the government will extend support to every segment of society in order to cope with the challenges posed by the coronavirus outbreak.

According to a report by Radio Pakistan, the Ehsaas emergency cash programme will be launched shortly to support 12 million families during this virus outbreak.

"Around 150 billion rupees have been allocated for this programme, under which each family will be provided with twelve thousand rupees," she said.

According to analysis by South Korean experts the virus has an approx 11.7% mortality rate in people above 80. it is 0.1% in people between the ages of 20-30.

We seem to be accelerating now :sree

expect more..but keep an eye on the mortality figures. That is important. The cases will increase with more zaireen returning and other travellers. Also if they are increasing testing.

This is not going to stop anytime soon..

The zaireen have stopped coming I think. The recent spikes have been due to tableeghi jamaats and local transmission.

tableeghis should be given a good chitroal..local transmission is inevitable..I'm not really sure how Pakistan will really cope if the numbers skyrocket..Allah Khair Karay.

I can see a mass lockdown at some point but only until the system is in place to cope with the poor and mazdoor class.

I just wish our former leaders had done more for the poor and spent money on welfare. Instead they spent money on palaces and apartments. At the same time they accuse a new leader who is trying to clean up their mess as being useless because he is taking too long to clean up their mess. It is beyond a joke now.

The same guy who spent around 400b for the orange train that hardly covers 25% of Lahore is now questioning the 1.5 year old government as to why they haven't provided ventilators. What's worse is that the media and aam awaam is buying his rhetoric.

I understand non Islamic nation muslims joining these groups, but why do people in Pak join them? They are already living in an Islamic nation and should not feel in secure right!

Total testing capacity to be increased to 280,000 tomorrow and 900,000 by April 15th - Asad Umar.

It can affect people with underlying health problems such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease..so in that case age doesn't matter.

Pakistan isolates men found hiding in container

At least 50 men have been sent to an isolation centre after being found hiding inside a shipping container on the back of a truck travelling across Pakistan.

The men were discovered by authorities in Chiniot region of Punjab, more than 1,000km (620 miles) from the city of Karachi, where the truck started its journey.

Though goods transport is allowed to operate in order to ensure adequate supply of essential items across the country, the truck was waved down on suspicion stemming from some recent reports.

Videos shared on social media in recent days have shown migrant workers stuck in Karachi - Pakistan's largest city - paying goods transporters to ship them secretly to their home areas in Punjab and KP.

The containers are loaded on to trailer trucks and are passed off as carrying essential provisions. One picture showed dozens of people crawling out the back of a truck in the Mardan region, some 140km from the capital Islamabad.

in addition to that look at the pictures on Islamabad's markets those are full of people. Who is responsible for that? Can you blame government for that? NO,
Can you blame mulvis for that? No.
Its public that needs to realize and stay inside the houses.

Yet people only blame religious parties. We need to stop attack only one group.

We seem to be accelerating now :sree

Cases getting identified right now got the virus 5-14 days ago. The more we identify right now in the early phase the better.

We need to be psychological prepared for potentially 5k - 10k infections right now. All else is unrealistic. Even south Korea with it's exemplary efforts and experience has around 8k confirmed cases.

How does this relate to this thread :13:

Just need to know.

I was told that Allah(swt) revealed the Quran to the prophet (pbuh) in phases. So the prophet(pbuh)was also patient to wait and get the full revelation.

How can these Jamaatis not learn the lesson of patience and wait for this storm to Blow out.

How can these people even claim to follow the life of the prophet(pbuh)? What right do they have to teach islam?

They are most likely not well educated. Although one doesn't need high education to grasp such basic concepts.

In Islam safety is given high importance. Muslims are allowed to do things that would be considered sinful if their safety depended on it, like eating haram food or abortion. But here we have people who are putting themselves and everyone else in danger. They need to understand the value of life, especially in Islam.

It was revealed over approximately 23 years.

The Prophet pbuh said the following:

"If you hear of an outbreak of plague in a land, do not enter it; but if the plague outbreaks out in a place while you are in it, do not leave that place."

He also said: "Those with contagious diseases should be kept away from those who are healthy."

There is also a story where once he asked a companion as to why he was not tying his camel. The companion said that he has faith in Allah. The Prophet pbuh then said, "Tie your camel first, then put your trust in God." This basically tells us to use common sense.

You are right here that they were not even following the teachings or the practices of the Prophet pbuh

So Pakistan has a choice then

Somehow provide food to the needy or let them die like the bhutto's want.

In the UK we still have delivery and postal services. As long as you keep your distance you can do it. WHO can't save 55% Pakistanis.

The 'Corona Relief Tigers' are being set up to distribute food essentials to the needy. Without work, a large portion of the population won't have the ability to eat 2 meals a day.

Your proposal is to simply let them die?

We need to think for ourselves. "stay at home" is a principle to help with social distancing. It is not a magic formula to make the virus disappear. I live in the west and people are allowed to go outdoors as long as they keep their distance and we have the virus since almost a month now.

Doctors have always been taking appointments on phone and it makes sense since hospitals are more likely to have the virus.

Door to door makes sense and it's easier to train the few individuals on how to properly conduct themselves to avoid transmitting the virus.

What's the alternative? Needy people gathering as a large crowd infront of a building asking for food?

yes definitely going door to door can be very risky.

It's the least risky. Tell the volunteer to wear a mask. Hand in the food and go away. No hanging around, no hugs, no accepting cheek kisses from grandma and no selfies.

For corona to transmit you would have to breath in a healthy amount of droplets from the infected person at a distance less than 2m and for a time of approx 15 min.

Dont Pakistan already have a government organization to take care of needy in calamity? I remember there was one setup when the earth quake hit Azad Kashmir hard. Why dont use them? They are already trained for this purpose and have experience. Would not it be better to use them for what is their job instead of hiring new ones with no experience and then training them?

Also there are private organizations who have very good track record in Pakistan to help out people in these situations. Government can give them funds if necessary.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has assured doctors, nurses and medical staff in Pakistan that the government will do everything to support them. He lauded the services of doctors for "fighting on the front line" in the battle against the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that given the increased demand for medical equipment across the world due to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, Pakistan was "lucky" that China gave it preference over other countries.

He also expressed his regret that past governments have paid little attention to the health sector.

In this era of Corona panic and fear, there are lot of confusions and misconceptions existing regarding the use of mask, not only amongst the laypersons but also among the health care providers.
On one hand masks are not available for the risk group while on other hand, who are not at risk, spending unnecessary money and energy to procure these masks.
This provoke me to write this blog, hope this would improve the understanding about the various types of commonly used masks and clarify the proper indications of use.

Q1 ... What are the common types of masks
Ans...
1 Cloth mask
2 Surgical mask

Q2... What are the Respirators
Ans.
N- 95
N- 99
N- 100
are the respirators

Q3.. what is the difference between mask and respirator
Ans..
Mask has loose fit, it doesn't seal nose and mouth snugly.
During respiration air moves along the edges of the mask, while respirator has tight seal and most of the times air passes only through its material after filtration.

Q4... Are all respirator masks are same
Ans...
No, respirators are graded according to their filtration efficiency.
According to the used filter type
According to the type of materials used
And additional features
They are of different types.

Q5... what is the efficiency grading
Ans...
According to the efficiency of filtration these are usually graded as-
95, 99 and 100
Means these respirator masks are capable of traping 95%, 99% and 99.9% of particles, smaller up to the 0.3 micron size.
This grading can also be done as
P1 (FFP1) - 80%
P2 (FFP2) - 95%
P3 (FFP3) - 99.95%
Filtration efficiency.

Q.6.. what is the N,R or P meaning written over mask
Ans...
N - not oil proof
R- oil resistant
P- oil proof
(Eg. N 95 is not oil proof).

Q7. Few repirator masks have valve, what is that.
Ans..
That valve is nothing but a simple exhalation port with one way valve mechanism, it reduces effort of expiration, reduce heat inside the mask, dissipate humidity and reduce co2 the amount of from the dead space of mask.

Q.8.. When to use surgical masks.
Ans... Surgical mask or procedure mask is the most common mask used by health workers.
It is not designed to protect wearer from inhaling the air born bacteria and viruses.
It is used to block only large particle droplets, splashes, sprays or splatter.
It also reduce the exposure of wearer's saliva and respiratory secretions to others. Surgical mask also remind wearer not to touch their mouth/nose which could otherwise transfer virus/bacteria after having touched a contaminated surface.

Q9... what is the filtration capacity of surgical mask
Ans... It can vary between 10-90% according to the manufacturer.

Q..10.. how one can assure about the quality of mask
Ans..
Mask should be certified by the
NIOSH (National institute for occupational safety and health)
Or
NPPTL (National personal protective technology laboratory)

Q.11... Does cloth mask effective?
Ans.
Cloth is a wooven material thus pore size is bigger than surgical mask which is made up of non wooven polypropylene material thus cloth mask is less effective than surgical mask in terms of filtration efficiency.

Q..12 ... Does extra layer improve efficacy of cloth mask
Ans.. No, it's not advisable. Each extra layer adds only 2% of extra protection on the cost of comfort .

Q.13... Can surgical/cloth mask be used routinely
Ans.
Yes these can be used routinely.
Few studies done on normal population concluded that the use of simple mask can decrease the incidence of flu up to 75%.
Few east asian countries following this practice of routine use of mask.

Q.14.. Can mask be reused?
Ans. -Cloth mask can be reused after washing
- Surgical mask should be discarded after single use or after soiled
- Respirator mask should be discarded when resistance of breathing get increased or get solied.
Viruses/bacterias can grow and flourish inside the reused mask.

Q..15.. what are the WHO recommendations for using masks?
Ans...
- For the normal population, any type of mask is not required, maintaining the social distance and hand hygiene are the sufficient.
- Sick person should wear surgical mask
- Any person who is taking care of sick person should also wear the surgical mask.
- N 95 mask should be used by the person who is potential to get expose with the respiratory secretions of the infected patient eg. During the Endotracheal intubation, CPR, Ventilation, Bronchoscopy and Tracheostomy etc.
The only additional thing to remember is that N95's recommended wear time is 4 hours.

They have the NDMA but no formal organisation. This initiative will help keep people alive. A full lockdown is not possible at this moment in time. It will literally kill thousands. Maybe more than the virus and if the peple start starving they will ignore the govt and come out to earn money thus making matters worse.

the current strategy is the only game in town. There is no other option.

To see IK plead on tv and yet at the same time show determination to try to stand up in this crisis should be an inspiration to people. But when we need people to rally around we have bottom feeders like the PPP and the PMLN looking to destroy morale. This in itself should show you what they are..

The prophet(pbuh) learned the Quran over 23 years.

And these idiots, inko chaar jamaat padh ke saara Quran aa gaya. I CALL THEM FRAUDS.

It will take ordinary humans a few lifetimes to understand the Quran properly.

Q.11... Does cloth mask effective?

very good information especially for a medial illiterate like me; I did not know that you have to discard surgical mask after single use; I recently bought N95 respirator for 10$ price gouging happens in west too if somebody ever try to put Pakistan down on this matter

she is not wrong, this goes against the advice WHO is telling the masses, here in West even doctors are cancelling appointments or taking them online or on phone, so sending non-medical youngsters out there can turn out to be very stupid decision; who should Pakistani youngsters listen to: WHO which is telling them to stay inside or Imran Khan who is telling them to go outside door to door?

In the UK the PM asked for 250,000 volunteers to help deliver food, medicine and other essentials to the most vulnerable (aged and those with underlying health issues).
This is happening throughout the world.

Its sad that we are just basing only one party. in this difficult situation we are just making political statements and looking for the mistakes that other are making.
There is lock down in Punjab and KPK, what about in those areas people are still walking and hanging around as nothing has happened.
It is very disappointed all we as a nation are not united, not on the same page in the tough situation.

The point was that volunteers are needed to handle the situation. It is simply on too large a scale. Even with them, there will be people who won't be reached and will probably die of hunger.

even the volunteers will not help. knowing our culture and people, i doubt that volunteers would help. Volunteers would help in those countries where public care for themselves. Right now people are not taking it seriously and they will all go for food wherever they will see distributions.

DNA make up of locally-transmitted coronavirus may have mutations, say experts

A team of researchers in Pakistan, led by Dow University of Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Professor Mohammad Saeed Quraishy, think that the genetic make up of the novel coronavirus may alter in a locally transmitted case.

The finding is not final as researchers are still studying the genome sequence of the virus and the research, being conducted in coordination with the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, is in its early stages. However, while examining the DNA structure of the virus contracted locally by a young boy, the researchers observed that the sequencing had slight mutations from the one that originated in Wuhan, China.

The patient, whose sample was being examined, had contracted the virus locally from a person who was infected in Saudi Arabia. According to data, 15 people of the same family had contracted the disease from the same person, which indicates that the local spread of the virus is extremely fast.

The team has yet to analyse further samples of the virus that arrived from other countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Syria, Iran, Iraq and other Gulf states.

The study of the virus' genome sequence is being hailed by experts as an important step towards developing a vaccine and treatment modalities.

The virus sample being studied by the research team was detected in the BSL-3 virology lab in Dow University, which is one of the first laboratories in Pakistan to conduct PCR testing for Covid-19. The lab is conducting free tests for the coronavirus.

Sindh reports one more death

Sindh’s Minister for Health and Population Welfare Dr Azra Pechuho has confirmed one more death from coronavirus, taking the total tally of Covid-19 deaths in the province to nine.

Dr Pechuho said that the 59-year-old patient was a resident of Karachi and was brought to the hospital on March 19 after his return from Saudi Arabia. He tested positive the same day.

She added that the patient had a history of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and was on ventilator since the first day.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been given permission to partially resume its flight operations to help repatriate citizens stranded abroad, it emerged on Wednesday.

In the first stage of operations, PIA will bring back a limited number of Pakistani travelers, the PIA spokesperson said in an announcement.

PIA will initially fly stranded passengers from Canada and the UK who were meant to travel to Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, the spokesperson said.

Limited flight operations from Toronto will resume on April 3, while operations from the UK will resume on April 4.

All repatriation flights will initially land at the Islamabad airport, the spokesperson said. Once the flights land, all passengers will be tested in the airport lounges and transferred to a local hotel for six hours.

All passengers who are declared negative will be allowed to proceed home; all others will be shifted to a quarantine.

All flights will be regularly disinfected and PIA will take all protocols to ensure its crew's safety very seriously, the spokesperson has said.

Guys you can purchase Edhi or Saylani donation ration pack through daraz.pk now. One ration pack is good to feed a family for 15 days and costs Rs. 2000. Imagine if you just put in Rs. 10,000 which is equivalent to 48 pounds or 60 USD, you will feed 5 families for 15 days and an average family size is of 5 people so one of you will feed 25 people. Think about it when taking out your zakaat for the upcoming Ramzaan. If it is not too much trouble then do take out more zakaat than what is required in these unusual circumstances.

Any mask is better than no mask even for non-medical persen. WHO recommendation on this matter can't be trusted. Yes there is a fear of people hoarding essential kits better used by medical staff however still public deserves the truth.

At time like these you can use disinfectant spray on the mask and let it dry for a while.
