What's new

Coronavirus in Pakistan

NY governor was mad at trump cause Fed gov was not helping and in US state power is huge so even with 18th amendment provinces will never have enough resources to combat covid 19 alone so they are not that off tbh

Sindh took the initiative in the beginning when the number of cases started going up and imposed a sort of a lockdown before the federal govt. and other provincial govts. began to enforce lockdowns elsewhere.

They have the capability to enforce the lockdown once again right now as they did previously if they feel it's required. But they prefer to just put it all on the federal govt. and aren't willing to take responsibility.

We love to pull ourselves down, but once in a while it is good to celebrate our achievements and highlight good performance.

Pakistan has proven it's not money which makes the difference but a leadership which actually cares.

If there is a second wave in the winter again, I will move to Pakistan. Europeans will die in huge numbers if this happens.

Coronavirus outbreak: Federal government extends countrywide lockdown till May 9

The federal government has decided to extend the countrywide lockdown till May 9, announced Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar on Friday.

Speaking at news conference, the minister said that a meeting of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) meeting had been held which decided to extend the date of the lockdown.

He said that the NCOC was about to start the implementation of the trace and track system from tomorrow. "Consultations were held with chief secretaries and then health ministers at the NCOC. The prime minister has given approval for the system," he said.

Umar said that the apex body of the NCOC will oversee the trace and track system but the provincial governments, information technology institutions, civil and military organisations will be involved in the process as well.

"This is a complete national response formed by the government," he said, though adding that the provincial governments will be responsible mainly for the implementation of the system.

He announced that throughout the month of Ramazan, loadshedding will not take place during Sehar and Iftar hours.

'Ramadan will be the decisive month'

The minister said that if people practiced the prescribed safety precautions during the holy month, then it would allow business and other activities to inch towards normalcy.

"However, God forbid, if we demonstrate irresponsibility, then we may have to impose more restrictions after Eid," he said.

He said that generally, Pakistanis had made a lot of changes to their social life during the past month ever since the lockdown was imposed. "We are trying to predict what this infection's spread will be through consultations will data scientists and experts," he said.

The remarks from the federal minister came a day before Pakistan observes its first fast for Ramadan 2020.

Amazing tweets, no other leader would admit his/her mistakes and then understand why, to make a change.

265 million people are being pushed to the brink of starvation by the Covid-19 crisis, let them not be Pakistanis.

Wish Pakistan’s leader could take strong decisions and keep Mullahs at bay. Thousands will get infected during Taraweeh prayers!

To sum up Imran Khan: Good intentions, bad judgment.

I have always advocated for an independent strategy to combat the virus.

http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/s...s-are-rising-no-need-to-panic-yet!&highlight=

However allowing mass events at this crucial time doesn't count as independent thinking and in no way helps the poverty ridden daily wage workers.

In Riyasat-e-Madina heavy rainfall was enough for the Prophet to cancel prayers at the mosque. In Riyasat-e-Madina Medina the Prophet would pray Taraweeh prayers at home than at the mosque because he feared it would become an obligation instead of being a voluntary thing.

However since these details doesn't suit certain Maulvi hazrats agenda, they won't mention it.

Even though it's like closing your eyes and jumping from a cliff hoping for a safe landing, I still hope everything works out for the best.

Atleast other leaders asked forgiveness from their people for negligence. This leader involves everyone for their negligence and asks forgiveness from almighty.

Well I think it’s clear but agree only if you know about the matter.

Another point I wanted to raise is this sycophant attitude of imran towards China. It’s fine if you can’t talk against them but atleast don’t give them unnecessary publicity. One word they have destroyed economy and lives around the world due to their negligence and arrogance

The number of #Covid_19 cases in Pakistan have crossed 12,000. Total is 12,032.

Total deaths are 253 and total recoveries are 2,755.

There have been more than 800 cases and 16 deaths in the last 24 hours with around 7,000 tests conducted.

Smart lockdown'

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Pakistan, the government has extended the nationwide lockdown till May 9.

However, it is switching to a so-called "smart lockdown" from Saturday under which it will implement targeted tracking and tracing of cases while allowing some industrial and commercial activities to begin under safety guidelines.

"Isolating these cases and their contacts will improve our ability to contain the disease alongside allowing the economy to function and people to get employment," said Asad Umar, Pakistan's planning minister, who also oversees the coronavirus national response body.

"This upcoming month of Ramadan will be decisive," he said, emphasising that adhering to the government's virus containment measures will allow other parts of the economy to restart.

Prayer congregations for Ramadan have also been allowed in Pakistan with the exception of the southern province of Sindh, where doctors have warned the virus could spread rapidly.

In Karachi, the capital of Sindh and Pakistan's largest city, most mosques were closed to the public for the Ramadan evening prayer gatherings, which began on Friday.

The country's key medical associations have warned the government of serious consequences if a "complete" lockdown is not imposed.

"Allowing the mass gatherings at mosques or markets may lead to an unmanageable situation as the country's weak health system is already overburdened," Qaisar Sajjad, secretary-general of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), said on Friday.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence service is supporting the government in tracing and tracking people who may have been in contact in with those who test positive for the virus.

As of Saturday, Pakistan reported 11,940 cases of infections, including 253 deaths.

Pakistan's coronavirus outbreak mostly through local transmission now: Mirza

State health minister Zafar Mirza says 79 per cent of all coronavirus cases in Pakistan have been locally transmitted while 21pc are imported infections.

"It is now fair to say that our outbreak is now mostly of local transmission," he told a news conference in Islamabad.

It had seemed to be under control and only increasing at a controlled rate but ever since the government gave in to the mullahs and other pressure groups it has risen quite substantially in the last week. I get IK's point of view that people may or may not die of corona but they will definitely die of hunger, but there has to be proper procedures put in place. Most places have gone back to pre-corona level of activity with zero regard for social distancing or SOPs. I hope someone knocks some sense into the government.

Thank you China for sending our poor country into recession. We can never thank you enough. Pak Cheen dosti zindabad.

Over 21,000 Pakistani expats from Gulf region laid off amid Covid-19: Zulfi Bukhari

Over 21,000 Pakistani expatriates in the Gulf states have so far lost their jobs amid the coronavirus pandemic, Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Overseas Pakistanis Sayed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari told Arab News in an exclusive interview.

“Unlike the UAE, where companies are laying off workers and sending them on forced and unpaid leave, Saudi Arabia is not doing that. Instead, it is giving them full salary,” he said.

Sindh CM launches tele-counselling service for Covid-19 patients

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has launched a tele-counselling service for patients affected psychologically by the lockdown and outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.

The online service can be reached here and patients can also reach out on a telephone helpline: 1093.

According to Sindh Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, the service was launched with the support of UNICEF and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The chief minister said that the counselling service was "most important" during the Covid-19 outbreak.

“This situation has left adverse effects on human psyche, therefore counselling by experts would be of great help,” he stated.

The chief minister thanked the Unicef and UNDP for their support and cooperation. “We can steer the nation out of this Covid-19 quagmire by joining hands with each other,” he said.

Even Imran Khan is not wearing a mask, a careless attitude going to the masses. When these people fall ill, where will the ventilators come from? Think! And mullah brigade need a good painta after all this over, no country can operate with these illiterate fools.

In Faisalabad, traders have found a way to go about their business despite lockdown

Cloth traders in Faisalabad have found a way to dodge the authorities. They open their shops in various Clock Tower bazaars in the wee hours and close after a short while before officials begin their daily visits to the markets to ensure nothing is open.

During a visit to some of the bazaars, particularly those in the Gole Cloth area, scores of shops were found open and entertaining customers. Barring a handful of people among the hundreds present, no one in the bazaars was seen wearing masks, maintaining social distancing or taking any other precautionary measures.

QUETTA: With the government moving towards “smart lockdown” in coronavirus hotspots, the clamour for stricter lockdown restrictions to contain the spread of the deadly virus is growing louder.

A group of young doctors, speaking at a press conference in Quetta, demanded that the government impose a 20-day curfew if it is unable to enforce a stricter lockdown across the province to curb the infection.

They said the government will have to make tough decisions. The least citizens can do is to restrict their worship to their homes during Ramazan to keep the virus at bay, they added.

The young doctors urged traders to keep their businesses closed, asking if business is more important than human lives.

Terming the healthcare system in the province flawed, they said there are ventilators but no oxygen.

The doctors stressed the need for stepping up Covid-19 tests in the province.

“Our first demand is for a complete lockdown and then for resolution of issues related to ventilators and oxygen,” they said, demanding that the government announce a package for the affected healthcare workers.

Why can not Pakistan just completely lock down for two weeks? Pakistan wasted last few weeks with a grey lockdown. Dont know where the country is heading? Make one decision and stick to it? Smart lockdown was not a bad decision but opening mosques is not smart. Listen to the blooming healthcare workers. What a terrible crisis we all face!

because who cares if masses get infected and die off corona, we should not let our economy down. Moronic decision and as much as I liked Imran Khan before taking charge of Pakistan I think he could not be more wrong person to lead at this time. What a confused man with obsession with his failures.

IK should be reminded that U-Turn are not bad during such crucial situations and he should show some flexibility in his decisions.

Cases have almost doubled in a week. This is an alarming time and it has happened when the federal govt. eased down restrictions.

The army needs to take over and they need to take control for the next 50 years. This virus has really exposed democracies. This is nothing against Imran Khan but democracy has massive limitations and a country like Pakistan can not run effectively in a democratic setup. Yet again, the army also are to blame; when nawaz and Zardari looted the countrys reserves clean, they sat and watched. When they started illogical projects, army sat and watched again. You can not blame Khan 100% as Pakistan has no reserves to play with in this situation. This is not his fault.

Highest number of cases reported during past 24 hours: Sindh CM

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said that the 383 new coronavirus cases reported in the province during the past 24 hours, was the highest number since February 26, when the first case emerged in Pakistan.

In a video message, the chief minister said: "This is the highest figure ever reported during the 61 days of the Covid-19 emergency.

"This illustrates that the situation is going from bad to worse and that we will have to take extraordinary measures to get it under control."

He added that 3,028 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours, which was the highest number of tests carried out in a single day.

It is not as simple as your stating it to be. If the economy is not functioning that people will die from hunger as Pakistan has little reserves. The government is in a difficult position so lets be wise in what we say, instead of being irrational.

The thing is IK is an obsessed man. He spends all his energy trying to prove himself right once something comes out of his mouth. rather than thinking rationally and taking decisions on merit he just want world to know he is right. He just does not have this kind of flexibility a leader must have. It must be hard for rational people in PTI to convince him to change his decisions.

It's quite a bitter truth for PTI fans that IK only came into power because of incompetence of Nawaz and Zardari. There was no change in PTI. It's same bunch of corrupt people with same mentality and incompetence. I wish we move on from such a system where we have to decide to have either incompetent or corrupt people. This current system is not delivering for the common people of Pakistan.

Coronavirus cases in Pakistan now: 13,328

Deaths: 277

Recoveries: 2,936

Active cases: 10,115

Fatality rate: 2.08%
Recoveries: 22%

That's right but problem is Pakistan could have avoided all this lockdown at this stage by enforcing a proper lockdown in the intial stage when we didn't have any local transmission. What we had was a confused mindset that took forever to implement any lockdown and allowed the virus to spread in the masses. Our leader was saying we have mostly young population so it can't harm us and like heat will kill it and so many excuses to make his decision look like right. That gave virus enough time to multiply among locals. Now 90% cases are of local origin. everyday we are having 700 odd cases.

If this goes on like that I don't think you can do any business in such environment. It couls have been all avoided if we had proper and clear mentality from the start.

It could not have been 'avoided'. No country has been able to avoid it, definitely not the fifth-most populated country in the world.

It could have perhaps been minimized courtesy of a complete lockdown starting early March, but then we would have probably had a massive law and order situation instead, courtesy of people starving.

Until the recent decision to soften the already partial lockdown, there was a general consensus that the authorities had done a pretty decent job overall in the circumstances.

The spread was always going to happen tbh. I live in UK and its a lot worse here. Only thing I don't appreciate is the mosques opening. This is not only a Pakistan problem but a world problem. Stop emotional amd blaming one man; he is in a difficult position.

That's right but problem is Pakistan could have avoided all this lockdown at this stage by enforcing a proper lockdown in the intial stage when we didn't have any local transmission.

Your lockdown was at an early stage when cases were low. Even now your deaths are very low. The govt has ensured that the country has more time to deal with a pathetic health care system left by those that came before IK. You should be thanksful you dont have a situation like the uk where they are digging mass graves, or in the US where parks are now becoming mass graves. You have no idea. nearly a 1000 people a day are dying in the uk and the us because they were late in their lockdown. Pakistan wasnt.

What we had was a confused mindset that took forever to implement any lockdown and allowed the virus to spread in the masses. Our leader was saying we have mostly young population so it can't harm us and like heat will kill it and so many excuses to make his decision look like right. Wrong again. There was no confusion. Confusion is when your PM comes on tv , talks about herd immunity and how the virus should go through the population, then a few weeks later looks like a bunny in front of the headlights, and takes a massive uturn, then falls victim to the virus himself. Confusion is when you claim there is enough PPE one day and then suddenly the enxt claim turkey isnt allowing shipments and the NHS will run out. Confusion is when half your main advisers all fall ill because of herd immunity. IK is far from being confused and has articulated his strategy very early on. Yu just dont care to see it and want to criticise for the sake of it. A poor country like Pakistan , left to the mercy of billoos and sharifs has managed to keep deaths to a minimum with a rubbish healthcare are system. That in itself is a miracle. Come to the UK and ill send you to where the mass graves are. Then talk.

If this goes on like that I don't think you can do any business in such environment. It couls have been all avoided if we had proper and clear mentality from the start.

On the one hand you want a total lockdown and here you talk about business. Make your mind up. Sounds like your the one confused. There is no going back to the way it was in the short term. Until you bring cases down to a manageable level. The best strategy is to test, trace, isolate at the moment and then eliminate. Pakistan has no other option. The paries of the past and their leaders should be arrested for crimes against the Pakistani nation for not spending anything on healthcare. I have said this a billion times, in enarly 30 years the PMLN and the PPP couldnt build a functioning healthcare system and yet you come on here and blame a man who built three hospitals for the poor with no real funds to start with. A man who has managed to keep deaths at under 500 in the worst healthcare crisis the world has seen in a hundred years. Like I said come to the UK and youll see what an incompetent confused govt looks like. We are looking at nearly 60k deaths in a country of 68 million. You do the math.

The spread was always going to happen tbh. I live in UK and its a lot worse here. Only thing I don't appreciate is the mosques opening. This is not only a Pakistan problem but a world problem. Stop emotional amd blaming one man; he is in a difficult position.

the mosque strategy was created because there was credible evidence that the mosques were going to open regardless with no sop's or measures. Now at least the govt has given them guidelines. Its not ideal of course not but even now deaths are low and altough cases are high recoveries are high too. So its a calculated strategy. they have some leeway but not much.

As usual the IK haters claim he cant govern unlike in the first world province of Sindh where murad shah has eliminated corona and they are the fastest growing provincial economy in the world. And the future PM Billoo bhai who when confronted by the BBC after giving rounds of interviews badmouthing the country in a time like this suddenly got caught with his pants down.

IK should be lauded for his attempts to fight this crisis. this apocalyptic stuff. first feb 26-27th , then teh economy and now this. Be thankful you have a leader who is trying and is passionate. Come to the uk and ill show you waht incompetence looks like..

Another numpty roaming around freely without any protections.

deaths gone from 12 to 20. Looks like they are doubling? but then its hovered around the 20 mark per day for the last week?

they need to get the R rate down under 1.0, Otherwise it will keep growing..I expect things to go high in ramadhan and then start to stabilise in the summer.

Since the past 2 weeks, the amount of tests seems to be stuck at around 6k a day. Why isn't it increasing?

Probably around 600 new cases per day on average during this period too, and the graph isn't slowing down.

It’s getting worse in Pakistan.

Scary to think how Pakistan could get affected by it.

Ya Allah reham kardein. Ameen.

It will because the general population are careless and not taking precautions. Arragonce will cost Pakistanis. I hope and pray that it doesnt.

We were told that by the end of April, govt will be doing 20ks tests a day. May be there are supply issues with the test kits.

Pakistan has seen raise in the infection rate from around 8.5% (for tests done couple of weeks ago) to 12% for test done in last few days. So they are reducing the number of tests done per day either to reduce panic or to hide depending on what view you want to take. India's infection rate is actually either keeping steady or reducing gradually from around 4.5 to 4.35 as of now (approximately 4% positive rate). SO they are gradually increasing testing..

Worst is Bangladesh. Their infection rate was around 11% and seems to be increasing but they keep doing less than 5K tests per day.. Same mentality as in West Bengal in India.. Hide, hide and pray it goes away

There is a supply and quality issue if you are getting the test kits from China. India recently cancelled their order after they found faulty kits.. So did Korea and few other countries.. So best would be to produce them locally

KARACHI: Sindh governor Imran Ismail, while stressing on the need for easing restrictions, on Tuesday said "we may have gone overboard with the lockdown."

He said Pakistan's economic conditions are not such that would withstand a strict lockdown.

The governor's remarks come a day after he had tested positive for coronavirus.

He said that he had been experiencing COVID-19 symptoms two or three days ago but does not have symptoms any longer.

"All of my staff along with my family have been tested for coronavirus and their results are negative," Ismail said.

"Prime Minister Imran Khan is monitoring the measures being taken against the coronavirus pandemic [...] I feel we have gone overboard with the lockdown," he said.

He said that during Ramadan there were several people who do not ask for help and that the lockdown restrictions were affecting them. "We have to keep in mind their problems as well."

Ismail said that Sindh's testing capacity, as well as that of the country as a whole, is low.

The governor said that Pakistanis will have to learn to live along with the virus and that right now, the country needs a national consensus to tackle the pandemic.

The PTI-leader is currently in self-isolation after he tested positive for the virus.

Before he went into self-isolation, the governor had spent 10 very busy days where he met a host of people and attended important meetings.

Manufacturers Association and the Beauty Parlour Association on April 24. The beauticians’ delegation comprised Sabah Ansari, Nadia Hussain and NG Marshall.

On the same day, the governor attended an informal ceremony at a field isolation centre to donate 3,000 protective gear.

Two days before on April 22, Ismail spent a busy day in Hyderabad and Jamshoro along with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf leaders Haleem Adil Sheikh, Jamal Siddiqui, Sidra Imran and Bilal Ghafaz, where they were briefed by Deputy Commissioner Hyderabad Fawad Soomro and DG Ehsaas Programme.

On the same day, the Sindh governor visited an Ehsaas Center at a girls college in Kotri where he was given a briefing at the office of Deputy Commissioner Jamshoro.

He also attended a function in his honour in Matiari.

On April 21, Ismail met Karachi’s traders regarding their concerns on the resumption of businesses and later in the day a 25-member delegation of well-known industrialists called on him at the Governor’s House.

A day earlier on Aril 20, Ismail met with a delegation of Anjuman-e-Tajiran Sindh and later visited Faizan Madina, a religious school in city’s old Sabzi Mandi area. On the same day, Governor Ismail also participated in a PM Office meeting with Mufti Taqi Usmani, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman and Allama Shehenshah Hussain Naqvi via video.

Earlier on April 16, the governor met with delegations of Karachi electronic market and other traders.

Islamabad, Pakistan - Pakistan has registered its deadliest day in terms of deaths from the coronavirus, with at least 20 people dying, taking the country's toll to 301 deaths since the outbreak began in late February, government data shows.

Cases in the South Asian nation have been spiking since last week, with 751 new infections recorded on Monday, taking the overall number of cases to 14,079, data collected by Al Jazeera shows.

So far, at least 3,233 patients, or 23 percent of the overall cases, have recovered, leaving 10,545 active cases in a country where a weak health infrastructure has been at the centre of concerns regarding the rapid spread of COVID-19.

In recent weeks, the government has built several makeshift hospitals, with a capacity of thousands.

Last week, however, Prime Minister Imran Khan warned that cases could spike by the middle of May, possibly overwhelming infrastructure capacity.

On Monday, Khan chaired a meeting of high-level officials to discuss the government's response to the crisis, where de facto Health Minister Zafar Mirza told government leaders that "the number of corona[virus] cases and [the] death rate in Pakistan is less than that of the rest of the world".

Khan reiterated that his government was seeking to "balance the need to save people from corona[virus] and the continuation of economic activity".

In the same meeting, Industries Minister Hammad Azhar said the government would be paying electricity bills for qualifying small businesses for up to three months to support them during the crisis.

Earlier this month, Khan's government reopened several sectors of the economy, arguing that rising unemployment could kill more people than the virus.

Cases have been rising, however, with the country's number doubling roughly every 11 days, while the number of fatalities has doubled almost every eight days.

The latest "deadliest day" comes a week after the previous highest number of daily deaths, 17, was recorded in the country.

As it eases up on the lockdown, the government has also been attempting to tighten restrictions in certain areas.

On Monday, Interior Minister Ijaz Shah advocated for greater restrictions on intercity bus travel on the weekends, stopping labourers from returning to their home villages.

Also on Monday, Imran Ismail, the governor of the southern Sindh province - home to the country's largest city of Karachi - said he had tested positive for COVID-19.

8500 tests yesterday and 805 new cases.

Earlier it was Sindh lagging behind with their testing numbers. Now the other provinces, especially Punjab have fallen behind.

Considering Punjab's population, 1500-2000 tests a day just doesn't cut it.

S. Asia may face new health crisis as children miss vaccinations: UN

ISLAMABAD: South Asia could face a further public health crisis as children miss routine vaccinations, the UN warned on Tuesday, spurring fears that the fallout from the novel coronavirus pandemic might reverse hard-earned gains in the region.

The United Nations children’s agency Unicef said hundreds of thousands were at risk as lockdowns across South Asia halted immunisation drives and parents refrained from taking their children to doctors to be inoculated.

“While the Covid-19 virus does not appear to make many children seriously ill, the health of hundreds of thousands of children could be impacted by this disruption of regular immunisation services,” said Jean Gough, director of Unicef’s South Asia office.

“This is a very serious threat. Early action is key.” Bangladesh and Nepal have halted their measles and rubella campaigns while Pakistan and Afghanistan have suspended their polio drives since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Unicef noted that “sporadic” outbreaks of preventable diseases that can be cured with vaccines, including the measles and diphtheria, have emerged in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal.

Vaccine stocks were also running low in some countries in the region thanks to lockdowns and travel bans which have disrupted supply chains.

“Unicef strongly recommends that, where immunisation campaigns are suspended, governments begin rigorous planning now to intensify immunisation activities once the Covid-19 pandemic is under control,” the agency said in a statement.

It added that as long as health workers take hygiene precautions, there was no reason for vaccinations not to continue.

The agency estimated that 4.5 million of South Asia’s children had already missed out on routine immunisations, even before the coronavirus pandemic struck.

No decision has been taken to lift lockdown in Sindh, says Nasir Hussain Shah

No decision regarding lifting the lockdown in Sindh has been taken as yet, according to provincial information minister Nasir Hussain Shah.

In a statement, he said: "Today we consulted on easing the lockdown. The government wants to ease restrictions for businesses after drafting standard operating procedures.

"We are currently discussing this. We will inform the public when we have taken a decision," he said, adding that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah's first priority was to protect the people's health.

"Once this is ensured, we will allow businesses to start operations," he said.

Separately, Sindh education minister Saeed Ghani also dispelled media reports that the lockdown will be lifted tomorrow.

In a tweet, he said: "There is no truth behind media reports claiming that the lockdown in the province will be lifted tomorrow."

Coronavirus cases in Pakistan have risen by 874, the highest single day increase, for the second consecutive day, to 15,759 cases countrywide, according to government data
New deaths from COVID-19 rose by 19 to a total 346, with 4,052 patients having recovered since the start of the country's outbreak in late February.
