Prime Minister Imran Khan reiterated on Sunday that the third wave of the coronavirus was extremely dangerous in comparison to the previous two waves, urging the masses to strictly follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Addressing the nation ahead of a question-and-answer session with the public, the premier cautioned that the government would be forced to impose major restrictions if people didn't start adhering to the Covid-19 guidelines.

"I have noticed ... people are not caring [and] are not taking precautions while going out in public," Imran said, warning that such an attitude could have dangerous consequences and lead to the spread of the disease.

"We have so far been protecting our people, we are not imposing a lockdown [or] closing our factories. We are only imposing minor restrictions so that this wave doesn't spread rapidly. But if this spreads, it will have a very negative impact and we will be forced to take steps."

Prime Minister Imran said the country could have plunged into a severe economic crisis if the government had imposed a lockdown for a second time. “Allah blessed Pakistan especially and saved us from the looming danger,” he added.

The premier said no one could predict with certainty how far the third virus wave would go.

“I request you to wear a mask wherever you go; it costs nothing and is highly beneficial, and the world has recognised its advantages,” he told the nation.

The premier noted that the most affected segment due to lockdowns were the poor across the world, saying according to an estimate 150 million people had gone below the poverty line in the wake of the closure of businesses and economies.

With more than 4,700 daily Covid-19 cases confirmed on Saturday, the National Co*mmand and Operation Centre (NCOC) had issued guidelines for Ramazan, banning the entry of people older than 50 years and ado*lescents in mosques/imambargahs for prayers and advising the people to perform Aitikaf at home.

On March 31, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan had disclosed that 0.8 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine had been administered in Pakistan, saying the campaign would be further sped up.

While around 20 per cent decline was observed in the number of Covid-19 cases, over 100 deaths were reported for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, taking the overall tally to 15,000 mortalities.

Bakhtawar Bhutto-Zardari, daughter of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and ex-president Asif Ali Zardari, has been infected with coronavirus.

According to data released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 4,004 cases and 102 deaths were reported in a single day. Out of the 102 deaths, 95 passed away in hospitals. As many as 4,529 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, of which 443 were on ventilators.

According to the data, 70pc ventilators were occupied in Multan, 69pc in Lahore, 60pc in Gujranwala and 58pc in Islamabad. Moreover, 85pc oxygenated beds were in use in Gujranwala, 82pc in Peshawar, 75pc in Gujrat and 59pc in Swat.

The number of active cases continued to increase and the tally reached 64,373 on Wednesday. So far 700,188 people have contracted the deadly virus and 15,026 lost their lives.

“I tested positive for Covid19 on April 2nd - isolating and recovering. Just a reminder to keep being cautious, call people out if their masks don’t cover their nose, get vaccinated & help those less fortunate to get vaccinated too. May Allah keep us all safe. Aameen,” Bakhtawar Bhutto-Zardari tweeted.

Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser stressed the need for vaccinating senior citizens in accordance with the NCOC guidelines. He said friendly ambience and supportive role of doctors and paramedical staff played a vital role in fast recovery of the coronavirus-affected patients.

The NA speaker expressed these views while chairing a meeting on streamlining the vaccination process for Covid-19 patients in Islamabad on Wednesday. “There is a need to upgrade facilities in government hospitals and guiding mechanism for patients is imperative to guide the patients, especially in government hospitals,” he said.

Expressing displeasure over the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) management’s unprofessional response to tackling Covid-19 patients, he said the management level needed to be more responsive.

The NA Speaker also briefed the meeting on his visit to Polyclinic Hospital Islamabad and stressed the need for making government hospitals a model for the whole country.

MNAs Ali Nawaz Awan and Raja Khurram Shahzad also expressed reservations over the mechanism of handling Covid-19 patients, especially by the PIMS management. They said there was a need to have mobile teams, especially in rural areas of Islamabad, for vaccination of senior citizens.

Mr Awan invited Speaker Qaiser to visit the Chak Shahzad vaccination centre, a state-of-the-art facility managed by National Institute of Health.

It is worth mentioning here that President Dr Arif Alvi had in November last year promulgated the Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) Ordinance according to which PIMS will be run through a board of governors who will look after the affairs of the hospital. The board members were appointed and notified by the Ministry of National Health Services on the recommendations of a search and nomination council. The BoG has overall control over the functions of the hospital.

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2294909/covid-19-infections-among-children-in-islamabad-cross-7000-mark

The number of Covid-19 cases among children in Islamabad has crossed the 7,000 mark as the trend continues its upward trajectory.

According to the District Health Officer Islamabad, some 7,052 children, infants to up to 10 years of age have been affected by the virus.

The report further said that some 6,253 youth from ages 11 to 20 years have also been infected by Covid-19.

Likewise, at least 13,803 people from ages 21 to 30, 19,258 from ages 31 to 45, 13,028 people from ages 46 to 60, 7,001 people from ages 60 to 80, and 648 of ages above 81 years have fallen prey to the disease.

The novel coronavirus’ third-wave has presented a new set of challenges for the country, many of which still remain unabated. The latest concern gripping the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), is talk of a higher Covid-19 ratio among children this time around. Per NCOC, an infection rate of three per cent has been reported for children aged 1-10 years during all three waves of the virus.

According to National Institute of Child Health (NICH) Head Prof Dr Jamal Raza, over 130 children were admitted to the hospital in the past year, out of which a majority displayed some kind of Covid-19 symptom.

“But where viral traits are the same in people of all age groups, children are likely to experience milder symptoms as compared to the elderly. In the same vein, they also have a much higher chance of recovering without any complications upon early diagnosis and treatment,” the professor said.

Yet however, despite having better chances of recovery, the NICH chief emphasised that children possess no special immunity against the virus and remain particularly prone to being infected.

“They can then act as potential carriers and transmit the disease to other children, which can result in a higher number of cases in the said age groups,” he added.

Will repeat. Cases remaining same level. Deaths going up

Pakistan has banned travellers from India due to a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases over there.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Tuesday issued a new travel guide in which it included India in the list of Category ‘C’ countries in the wake of the third dangerous wave of the coronavirus and extended restrictions till April 24.

According to the new travel guidelines issued by the CAA Director Air Traffic Irfan Sabir, “With the latest inclusion of India in the list, the number of countries in Category C have reached 23.”

“In the notification, I extended the travel restrictions imposed on Category C countries till April 24, while India was included in the list due to the deteriorating situation of the coronavirus and steady increase in cases,” Sabir said.

In Category ‘C’, travel restrictions were extended to 23 countries, including South Africa, Brazil, Zimbabwe, India, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Mozambique, making the arrival of travellers from these countries subject to the permission of the National Command and Operation Centre.

“Without a no-objection certificate, a complete ban will be imposed on the arrival of passengers from Category ‘C’ countries in Pakistan,” the CAA notification stated. “Pakistani passport, National Identity Card for Oversees Pakistanis and Pakistan Origin Card holders in these countries will not be able to return home.”

On the other hand, the number of Category ‘A’ countries has been increased to 20.

Passengers from other countries, including Australia, Bhutan, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Sri Lanka, are not required to undergo the coronavirus test.

Similarly, the duration of PCR test for Category ‘B’ passengers will be 72 hours.

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2295974/uk-variant-of-covid-19-detected-in-sindh-says-dr-azra

Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho said on Wednesday that recent cases of Covid-19 in the province have been found to be linked with the UK variant.

According to the minister, a genomic study conducted in Karachi has 50 samples confirming the variant of the virus.

Pechuho said that the UK variant is more lethal and spreads much more rapidly. She observed that the variant has already taken many lives in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The provincial health minister further said that there are fears that the number of cases in the province will increase due to crowded markets before Eid. "It is important [for the masses] to be cautious during the rush hours and adhere to the precautionary SOPs."

The minister informed that designated vaccination centres will remain open after Iftar. She urged those above the age of 50 years to get registered and vaccinated so they can remain safe from the virus.

On April 16, Sindh Home Department issued a notification for further extension in the coronavirus restrictions. The two safe days for keeping the business activities suspended in Sindh have been rescheduled.

According to the communique, business activities will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday across the province. The restrictions will not apply to compulsory services, including clinics, pharmacies, milk shops, bakeries, law enforcement agencies, media outlets and newspaper vendors.

The notification stated that business activities will be allowed from dawn to 6pm. The cinemas, theatres, amusement parks and shrines will remain completely closed. Inter-provincial public transport will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday.

How many tests?

Its absolutely clear as day now that pakistan is hiding cases. I've been looking out for the stats over the past week. For example a few days ago the numbers of tests done were around 60k with a positivity rate of around 9 percent resulting in about 5500 cases. The next day the positivity increases to over 11 percent but the number of tests are reduced (surprise surprise) to 47k resulting in a similar amount of cases. Had the same amount of tests been done then according to the test positivity the cases would have been near 7k but pakistan seems to want to keep the cases below 6/7k daily.

When you look at the trends its pretty blatant. This should be looked into.

No one is hiding test results. It's just that Pakistan doesn't conduct many tests because they are expensive. It seems to have gone up to around 60k per day in the last few weeks, which is an improvement from before when it was around 40-50k.

That maybe have been a Sunday/Friday where tests are low.

Also you can't simple extrapolate the positivity from a sample to another. It may go up or down depending on where/how tests are being conducted.

So, I don't think there is enough to conclude a deliberate underreporting of cases.

I will agree on one thing, we are conducting too few tests and there is a massive undercount, especially of asymptomatic cases or mild cases. True asymptomatic don't cause much harm but the mild cases are the worrying ones.

The only place even remotely close to giving a true picture is Islamabad. Good contact tracing, follow-ups, much better mask usage and more importantly a test count that is not downright embarrassing. Islamabad is doing 6-8k tests per day, Lahore is doing 5-6k (that should say it all). So if Islamabad is struggling and the positivity is around 7-10, the situation for the rest of the country (particularly main cities) is dire.

Situation is pretty bad in Pakistan. So many of my relatives and family friends effected by covid. It wasn't the case in the first wave.

yeah cases are under reported due to the low level of testing but at the moment deaths are low and recoveries are high. If deaths start shooting up you know we are in big trouble.

I know of two people in my close family and friends who passed away but both were in their 70's. Most younger people are recovering.

The govt will need to make some hard choices in the next few days and weeks if cases and deaths keep rising.

Also another thing, i have ercently recovered from covid after two of my household were infected. I did not go for a test therefore my infection would not be reported (i am not in pakistan by the way) but I got all the symptoms and isolated etc. Many In pakistan are probably doing the same and isolating without bothering with the tests. But you cant hide deaths or the occupation of hospital beds.

The country recorded another day of high fatalities due to Covid-19 with at least 144 deaths recorded during the last 24-hour period and as many as 5,870 new cases.

At least 57 patients who were on ventilator support were among the fatalities and 133 of the deaths were of patients who were hospitalised. Most deaths occurred in Punjab, followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Highest ventilator occupancy was recorded in Gujranwala with 88 per cent, 85 per cent in Multan, 82 per cent in Lahore, 65 per cent in Mardan.

The number of active cases across the country stands at 84,976. Around 53,818 tests conducted during the said time span.

At least 682,290 people have recovered from COVID-19 across Pakistan.

There is no Covid-19 patient on ventilator support in Gilgit-Baltistan, and Balochistan. As many as 562 vents are currently occupied across Pakistan.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, a total of 784,108 cases were detected, including 16,193 in AJK, 21,365 in Balochistan, 5,241 in GB, 72,150 in Islamabad, 110,875 in K-P, 282,469 in Punjab and 275,815 in Sindh.

Among the 13,595 deaths, 4,576 occurred in Sindh, 7,799 in Punjab, 3,029 in K-P, 652 in Islamabad, 227 in Balochistan, 104 in GB, and 455 in AJK.

There are 633 hospitals with COVID-19 facilities in Pakistan with 2,394 patients currently admitted.

Pakistan faces third Covid-19 wave. Low oxygen chokes Islamabad hospitals

The situation in Islamabad seems to be particularly precarious as the largest medical facility here, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), is struggling with low oxygen pressure amidst a tidal wave of Covid-19 patients

Crisis looms large over major hospitals in Pakistan as they approach saturation due to rising Covid-19 cases. Pakistan is reeling under the third wave of coronavirus. The country has reported new 144 fatalities due to coronavirus, raising the total death tally to 16,842 on Friday. So far, 784,108 cases have been reported in Pakistan.

The situation in Islamabad seems to be particularly precarious as the largest medical facility here, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), is struggling with low oxygen pressure amidst a tidal wave of Covid-19 patients, Geo reported.

According to the latest data by the National Command and Operation Centre on its official web portal, 5,870 new coronavirus cases have been recorded in Pakistan, Geo News reported.

At least 53,818 coronavirus tests were conducted across the country in the last 24 hours, out of which 5,870 came back positive.

A critical situation was reported at PIMS on April 18, when ventilators reserved for coronavirus patients started sounding alarms.

The ventilator alarms are triggered when the pressure of oxygen being supplied to a patient drops below the required level. On that day, it dropped from 100% to 70%.

The incident caused panic at the facility as there were five patients on ventilators at the time in the coronavirus intensive care ward. At the time, there were 147 patients occupying the 183 beds allocated for Covid-19 patients at the hospital. A separate 30 patients were in the hospital's emergency ward.

The situation was serious as most of the patients affected were dependent on 'high flow oxygen' for survival -- a medical condition where they need more oxygen in comparison to ordinary patients as they suffer from acute breathing difficulties.

When contacted, Joint Executive Director PIMS Dr Minhaj-us-Siraj told Geo News that the drop in oxygen pressure was mainly attributable to the sharp increase in the number of coronavirus patients at the hospital and the need to continuously supply oxygen to them.

The PIMS administration explained that the health facility's storage tank is in fact full of oxygen. The real issue is to maintain oxygen pressure as the oxygen supply lines running through the hospital are in excessive use owing to an unprecedented number of patients needing oxygen for life support.

Among the hospitals catering to the capital city, the Federal Government and Social Security hospitals do not have proper arrangements for high flow oxygen beds, according to the health ministry.

There is no ventilator available for Covid-19 patients at these facilities either.

Recently, Pakistan Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar expressed concerns as Oxygen supply capacity in the country is now under stress and hospitals are filling up.

Global covid cases exceeding 750,000 per day and deaths more than 13,000. We are seeing some of the worst numbers since covid started. Our neighbourhood in severe crises... Need for safety precautions greater than ever," Pakistan Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar tweeted.

"Hospital fill up continuing to grow. Critical care patients now above 4500, which is 30% higher than the peak in June last year. Oxygen supply capacity in the country is now under stress. Sop compliance remains low. We are making a huge mistake by not following sop's," he added.

Pakistan shouldn't be thinking about sending any oxygen to india, above proves that we need it, doesn't matter if hospitals are not reporting it - as this occurred through the second wave for us

ISLAMABAD: Amid an increase in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Friday extended travel restrictions for international passengers arriving from 23 category-C countries till April 30.

“International travel to Pakistan from category-C countries is restricted and only allowed as per guidelines of the NCOC (National Command and Operation Centre),” read a notification issued by the Aviation Division.

As per the coronavirus protocols mentioned in a previous notification for Category-C countries, only Pakistanis, diplomatic passport holders and their families traveling from these countries will be allowed to enter Pakistan under certain SOPs, including a 72-hour old PCR test before boarding a flight to Pakistan.

Passengers coming from 20 category-A countries, including Australia, Bhutan, China, Fiji, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mongolia, Mauritania, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, Tajikistan and Vietnam, do not require COVID-19 PCR test before entry into Pakistan.

“International travellers from the countries not specified in the category-A, require COVID-19 PCR test before commencement of travel to Pakistan (Max 72 hours old),” the Aviation Division said while explaining the Category-B list.

It explained that all countries not specified in categories A&C fell in category B.

There is def undercounting of cases and deaths are at an all time high

If Pakistan public doesn’t straighten their ways another india type situation is inevitable

Pakistan recorded its highest single-day Covid-19 death toll on Saturday with 157 fatalities registered over the previous 24-hour period. The previous high, 153 deaths, was recorded on June 20 last year.

According to the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC), the country recorded at least 5,908 new coronavirus cases during the same time period, taking the country's Covid-19 tally to 790,016.

The country is witnessing a surge in Coid-19 cases as it grapples with the third wave of the pandemic, fueled by the UK strain of the virus.

Federal Minister for planning Asad Umar, who also heads the country's nerve centre on Covid-19 response, has announced that from April 25, walk-in vaccination for those who are between the ages of 60 and 64 will also be started.

All those falling in this age group, who are already registered with the 1166 service, can visit their vaccination centre for the vaccine.

Earlier the government had opened the walk-in facility for those above the age of 65. Umar added that the vaccination centres will also be open on Sundays. Around 1.3 million people in Pakistan have either received their first or both vaccine doses.

According to the NCOC, the country's death toll climbed to 16,999, with most deaths occurring in Punjab followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

Meanwhile, the total number of patients recovered from the deadly disease rose to 686,488. The total active Covid-19 cases across the country were reported to be 86,529.

The highest ventilator occupancy rate in the country is in Gujranwala at 88 per cent, followed by Multan with 85 per cent occupancy, Lahore at 83 per cent and Mardan at 60 per cent.

The NCOC further reported that the highest oxygen bed occupancy was also witnessed in Gujranwala at 85 per cent followed by Peshawar at 77 per cent, Swabi at 71 per cent and Mardan at 68 per cent.

About 52,402 Covid-19 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours out of which 12,786 were conducted in Sindh, 23,590 in Punjab, 8,344 in K-P, 5,308 in Islamabad, 1,024 in Balochistan, 378 in G-B and 972 tests were conducted in AJK.

Covid-19 deaths by province

Out of the total 16,999 reported deaths, there have been at least 4,587 deaths in Sindh, 7,897 in Punjab, 3066 in K-P, 657 in Islamabad.

About 230 deaths were reported in Balochistan, 104 in G-B and 458 in AJK.

There are around 633 hospitals with Covid-19 facilities across Pakistan with more than 5,561 patients admitted, added the NCOC.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan said the Pakistan Army has been called out in aid of civil administration to ensure implementation of precautionary measures and he warned the government might impose lockdown in major cities if the spread of the deadly contagion is not contained.

The ominous warning came as Covid-19 appears to have spiralled out of control in India where the healthcare system is staggering amid a shortage of oxygen and medicines while crematoriums are being overwhelmed with deluges of bodies.

“I appeal to you to follow the SOPs so that we don't have to take steps that India is taking: sending cities into lockdowns. Half the problem is solved when you wear facemasks,” the prime minister said in a televised address

On the oxygen supply in Pakistan, Asad Umar said around 90pc of the country’s oxygen capacity was being used. Of which, 80pc was being utilised by the health sector.

SAPM Dr Faisal Sultan endorsed Asad Umar, saying Pakistan's oxygen capacity was under stress. He added that the healthcare system was under stress during the first wave when around 3,500 patients were on oxygen. “Now the number is above 4,600,” he said. “The positivity rate, meanwhile, is consistently hovering at 10% which shows how widespread the disease is.”

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Saturday imposed a travel ban on various countries including Pakistan and India amid the growing number of Covid-19 cases.

The kingdom also implemented the ban on the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Indonesia whereas the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) issued a notification imposing a temporary travel ban on European Union (EU) countries and Switzerland.

Saudi residents have been given 72 hours to return to KSA.

On April 23, Canada's government said it would temporarily bar passenger flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days as part of stricter measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

The center-left Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acted after prominent right-leaning politicians complained Ottawa had not done enough to combat the third wave of infections ripping through Canada.

The ban, which takes effect at 11.30 pm (0330 GMT Friday), does not affect cargo flights.

Earlier in February, the KSA suspended entry to the kingdom from 20 countries, with the exception of diplomats, Saudi citizens, medical practitioners and their families, to help curb the spread of the coronavirus, the state news agency reported.

The temporary ban that came in effect from February 3, included people arriving from the United Arab Emirates, Germany, the United States, Britain, South Africa, France, Egypt, Lebanon, India and Pakistan.

The decision was based on recommendations by Saudi health authorities.

Pak Army deployed in Islamabad and soon will be deployed across the country to help the law enforcement agencies in ensuring SOPs are followed to curb COVID.

so mening - why hasnt pakistan learnt it lesson, testing has just increased to over 53,000 everyday from 40-48,000, yes we hit 70-75k test for i believe 3 days in a row last week - but the whole of this week it dropped to 53k-58k.
Why haven't we increased the testing to 150k a day? - why hasn't the army used to help build more testing sites?

Why has our push for vaccination been one of the slowest in the world?
Why hasn't he pushed for harder lockdown in lahore/ karachi - knowing these two cities its been rampant

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government decided on Sunday to enforce a complete lockdown in district Mardan for seven days, starting tomorrow, the provincial government's spokesperson announced on Sunday.

In a statement, Kamran Bangash said that markets related to food items, basic commodities and medicines will remain open during the period.

He informed that the ratio of positive cases of Covid-19 in the district currently stands at over 40 per cent.

The spokesperson appealed to the masses to follow precautionary measures.

Earlier today, another doctor died in K-P due to the virus. As many as 64 doctors have succumbed to the virus in the province since the start of the pandemic.

Assistant Professor Muhammad Ali, serving at the psychiatric department of the Naseer Teaching Hospital in Peshawar, had fallen prey to Covid a few days ago.

He was receiving treatment at a private hospital of the provincial capital, and breathed his last on Saturday night.

According to the provincial doctors' association, so far, 97 members of the medical staff died due to the virus, including 64 doctors, 15 paramedics, six nurses, and 13 class-IV workers.

Today, Pakistan witnessed another day of high fatalities due to Covid-19, with at least 118 deaths recorded during the 24-hour period and as many as 5,611 new cases, the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) reported.

The country's tally for confirmed cases has now reached 795,627 whereas the death toll stands at 17,117.

The fresh positive cases were recorded against a total of 55,128 tests conducted on Saturday.

According to the NCOC, among the day's fatalities, 40 were of patients on ventilator support, whereas 110 of these patients were hospitalised. Most deaths occurred in Punjab, followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The interior ministry has issued a notification allowing the provinces and federal territories to seek the help of the army to enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

In a video message on Sunday, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid said according to the notification, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir and Islamabad will avail the services of the Pakistan Army for implementation of Covid-19 SOPs "as per their need". He said Sindh had not opted to be part of the measure for now.

He added that this was a "big decision" taken because neighbouring India was reporting 350,000 or more Covid cases on a daily basis.

The minister said the Pakistan Army had always stood with the people when floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters hit the country, therefore, it was decided during a meeting of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) to seek the army's services to enforce the coronavirus SOPs.

Orders issued by the Ministry of Interior, seen by Dawn.com, notified the deployment of the armed forces, citing the decision taken during the NCC meeting on April 23.

"The federal government, in exercise of the powers conferred under Article 245 of the Constitution [...], is pleased to authorise deployment of sufficient strength of troops of Pakistan Army, we.f. 25th April, 2021, on the requisition of the Government of Punjab in the province in connection with enforcement of NCC/NCOC guidelines on Covid-19 and matters ancillary thereto subject to laws enforced in Pakistan," one of the orders said.

It said the requirement of troops will be worked out by the Punjab government in coordination with the army authorities, adding that "the date for de-requisitioning of army troops will be decided subsequently on the basis of mutual consultation of all stakeholders and decision by the NCC/NCOC." Similar notifications were issued for KP, Balochistan, Islamabad, AJK and GB.

Meanwhile, the GB Home Department issued a notification for the deployment of army and Rangers personnel in cities with a Covid-19 positivity rate of more than five per cent. It also banned dining at restaurants and closed all parks in the region.

On Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan said he had asked the Pakistan Army to assist the police and law enforcement agencies in enforcing Covid-19 SOPs, warning that Pakistan may soon be facing a situation similar to India if the current trend continued.

Addressing the nation after a meeting of the NCC, he said: "I am appealing to you to follow SOPs so that we don't have to take steps that India is taking which means imposing lockdowns. Half the problem is solved when you wear face masks."

A day later, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government requested the federal government to authorise the deployment of armed forces and civil armed forces in the province to ensure effective implementation of the Covid-19 guidelines

Likewise, the Balochistan government said the army would be called in if the people did not follow the SOPs to save them from the deadly virus.

******tan on Saturday saw a record 157 deaths from Covid-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country, while the National Command and Opera*tion Centre (NCOC) decided to allow the army, Frontier Constabulary (FC) and Rangers to assist law enforcement agencies in enforcing SOPs if requested by the provincial governments.

The NCOC meeting, which was presided over by Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar, deliberated upon the proposed lockdowns in high virus prevalence cities with stakeholders.

The participants were of the view that if cases continued to rise, critical care facilities in that particular city would become overwhelmed.

“The decision on lockdown will be taken after discussions with all stakeholders. The purpose of the lockdowns will be to contain the spread of the disease through implementation of SOPs,” the forum’s statement said.

“A few proposed restrictions will include closure of markets and malls, less essential services, ban on inter-city public transport and shutting down of education institutions,” it added.

Army troops deployed in 16 cities across Pakistan: DG ISPR

In view of the third wave of coronavirus in Pakistan, Major General Babar Iftikhar, the chief military spokesperson, on Monday said that the Army troops have been deployed in 16 cities across Pakistan to ensure the adherence of Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The cities included Islamabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Karachi, Hyderabad, Quetta and Muzaffarabad, where the positivity rate has reached "dangerous" levels, he said during a press briefing.

He said that the death toll due to Covid-19 was on the rise in the country and it has reached 2.16 per cent for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

The DG ISPR further said that 570 patients were on ventilators across Pakistan whereas condition of 4,300 is critical. "Approximately 90 ventilators have been occupied in the country," he added.

The troops will assist the civil administration and will not avail any security allowance, revealed the chief military spokesperson. "We can remain safe only by adhering to the Covid-19 SOPs," he added.

Maj-Gen Babar further said that 75 per cent oxygen was being distributed in the health sector. However, he added, that if the situation persists then the oxygen being given to the industrial sector would also be allocated to the health sector.

The confirmation came a day after the federal government announced deployment of armed forces in all provinces and regions of the country, with the exception of Sindh, to ensure compliance with the Covid-19 SOPs.

Besides, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to enforce a complete lockdown in Mardan district for seven days, starting from today.

However, it emerged later that the Sindh government had also written to the federal government seeking the deployment of army in the province to ensure adherence to Covid-19 precautionary SOPs.

The country is witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases as it grapples with the third wave of the pandemic, fueled by the UK strain of the virus.

According to the NCOC, most deaths were reported in Punjab followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Major General Babar, in today's media briefing, said that the army will assist the civilian institutions as an emergency response force. “Today since 6am, armed forced have been sent to every district to assist the civilian administration.”

He said that a team has been deployed at every administrative level. "At the division level the team [of armed forces] will be headed by a brigadier level officer and at the district level by a Lt-Col," he said.

The DG ISPR added that apex committee meetings will be held weekly to review the Covid-19 positivity rate of the cities.

I hope it doesn't happen, but it seems that Pakistan could be the next India.

It seems that throughout the pandemic many people in Pakistan have flouted social distancing measures and ignored safety measures, almost as if Pakistan is exempt from the disease.

Indian ‘double-mutant’ Covid variant not reported in Pakistan

The National Health Ministry has confirmed on Monday that the Pakistan has not yet reported a new “Indian strain” of the coronavirus – a “double-mutant” variant – considered to be responsible for a recent spike in infections in India.

Syed Sajid Shah, a spokesperson for the ministry, told reporters on Monday that the country is still “safe” from the Indian variant. Cases of the UK variant of the virus, however, are being reported, he added.

Pakistan has already banned land and air travel from India, citing concerns about the spread of the latest coronavirus variant.

The two South Asian nuclear rivals have been grappling with a devastating Covid-19 wave, while the situation in Pakistan has been considered relatively better compared to India, where hospitals are reportedly running out of beds and oxygen supplies.

Pakistan has also offered Covid-19 support to India in a gesture of solidarity.

The deteriorating coronavirus situation in Pakistan does not seem to abate just yet, as the country recorded over 4,400 new infections in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 804,939 on Tuesday.

According to the government's database for tracking the spread of coronavirus, Pakistan conducted 43,981 tests for coronavirus out of which 4,487 returned positive.

With 142 new fatalities, the total coronavirus death toll in Pakistan has reached 17,329. The highest death toll in the last 24 hours was reported in Punjab with 107 new deaths.

The country's positivity rate has risen to 10.2% with 87,794 active cases, while the number of recoveries nationwide has reached 699,816 so far.

To mitigate the losses incurred from the intensifying third wave of coronavirus, the government has placed a number of restrictions.

In order to mitigate the losses incurred from intensifying the third wave of coronavirus, the government has placed a number of restrictions.

A day earlier, the Ministry of Health had said that Pakistan is still safe from the new coronavirus variant in India that has caused massive devastation with a drastic increase in coronavirus infections resulting in a dearth of oxygen supplies across the country.

According to the spokesperson from the health ministry, not a single case of the Indian coronavirus has been reported in Pakistan yet, however, Pakistan is currently reporting cases of UK's new coronavirus variant whose first three cases were reported in Karachi in December last year.

The spokesperson further noted that land and air travel is currently banned from India as a preventive measure to keep the Indian variant of coronavirus at bay.

I hope it doesn't happen, but it seems that Pakistan could be the next India.

It seems that throughout the pandemic many people in Pakistan have flouted social distancing measures and ignored safety measures, almost as if Pakistan is exempt from the disease.

Why do you think this way?

People in many countries dont socially distance and yet have not seen cases rise

In America the states doing best now are the ones where most people ignored social distancing and continued to lead their lives. The states which are doing worst are the one where people had the toughest rules

India saw a freak event through combination of poorly equipped hospitals and more importantly the double mutated strain.

The media had brainwashed the people who went with it. Lockdowns are surely not the solution or social distancing against a virus...

good news that recoveries were at 5,770 and new cases were 4,487 - thus making active cases drop to 87,794,

In Balochistan, the rising fear of the coronavirus has triggered panic buying among citizens, who are purchasing and storing oxygen cylinders as the third wave of the virus intensifies, Geo News reported on Tuesday.

As per sources in several markets, the sale of oxygen cylinders in Balochistan have spiked dramatically due to rising cases of the coronavirus.

A large number of people have bought and saved oxygen cylinders, fearing the coronavirus. The move has created a shortage of oxygen cylinders in markets across several cities in the province and led to an increase in the prices of oxygen cylinders overall.

Market sources noted that the price of a large cylinder sold which was being sold for Rs17,000 a month earlier has gone up to Rs25,000 while the price of an oxygen cylinder which was being sold for Rs8,000 has gone up to Rs15,000.

Meanwhile, the oxygen cylinders that were refilled for Rs500 previously are now being refilled for Rs800 after the surge in demand from consumers.

yes this has happened but hat in itself is not enough to cause an India situation. the variant in india is much more virulent and deadly. Although the uk variant is more transmissable and you see a rise in cases, there is no real evidence to show it causes more fatalities than the normal strain.

If we keep the double mutant strain out we can get through this. With the army now on the streets people will have to listen.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood and Dr Faisal Sultan on Tuesday held a press conference related to the violation of coronavirus SOPs outside of Cambridge exam centres as well as the overall situation of infections in the country.

During the press conference, Shafqat Mehmood said that from April 18 until now, the number of coronavirus cases has rapidly risen, therefore, we have decided to postpone all exams until June 15.

"Exams of 9, 10, 11 and 12 which were supposed to begin from the end of May have been delayed further," the minister said. "No board exams will be held till mid-June (June 15)."

Mehmood added that another meeting of the NCOC will decide in the third week of May to decide whether these exams will be postponed further or not.

Speaking about Cambridge exams, he said that O level exams will now be held in October and November cycle and the same will be the case for A level exams, the minister said.

The Cambridge examinations started on Monday amid strong calls from the students and their parents to cancel exams considering the worsening COVID-19 situation in the country.

Minister Shafqat Mehmood had said that the permission to hold exams was conditional on strict SOP observance.

“As more reports have come in, it is obvious that outside the exam centres the compliance is poor," Shafqat Mehmood earlier announced on Twitter.

"This and the latest corona spread reports will be discussed in a special NCOC meeting today afternoon,” he had said in a statement posted on his official Twitter account.

'Only 50 students allowed at a centre'
On Monday, an NCOC session, headed by its chairperson Asad Umar and co-chaired by National Coordinator Lieutenant General Hamood-Uz-Zaman Khan, was held in Islamabad.

The NCOC, in a statement, said the examinations were being conducted in line with the Ministry of Education's decisions. The forum directed that not more than 50 students should be allowed in a centre.

Meanwhile, in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, violation of coronavirus SOPs was seen, as several students did not wear face masks — essential equipment to keep the virus at bay. The parents were also present outside the exam halls waiting for their children.

Admins seek help of ulema to implement precautionary measures

The additional assistant commissioner, Ashrafuddin, held a series of meetings with religious scholars, tribal elders, members of civil society, shopkeepers and transporters on Monday to muster their support for successful and strict implementation of the preventive measures against coronavirus in bazaars, mosques and bus and taxi stands.

A notification said that coronavirus positivity rate in Khyber was 6.84 per cent while 168 persons tested positive for the infectious ailment during the current wave of the pandemic. It said that so far 1,300 senior citizens were vaccinated in Khyber.

The authorities have made wearing of face mask mandatory for all people entering Pakistan via Torkham border. Officials at the border crossing said that nobody would be allowed to enter Pakistan without wearing a face mask.

In Lower Dir, the administration asked ulema and prayer leaders to extend their cooperation to the government in implementing SOPs regarding Covid-19.

A meeting in this regard was held at the district assembly hall with Deputy Commissioner Aun Haidar Gondal in the chair.

DPO Liaquat Ali Malik, SP Mushtaq Ahmad, Additional Deputy Commissioner Ashfaq Ahmed, District Health Officer Dr Irshad Roghani, ulema and prayer leaders from different areas attended the meeting.

In Swabi, army has been deployed in the district headquarters to implement SOPs and ensure imposition of lockdown.

The district administration has imposed smart lockdown in eight areas after increase in coronavirus cases.

The army personnel distributed face masks among the locals and advised them to follow the SOPs while visiting markets.

In Mohmand, the authorities have urged people to strictly follow SOPs and avoid unnecessary gatherings.

The district health officer, Dr Hayat, said that implementation of SOPs was the only way to contain spread of the virus. “So far, 170 positive cases have been registered in the district,” he said.

So far, 2,354 persons have been vaccinated in the district.

I think the lack of testing is criminal from pakistan. The pakistani people as well as the international community must hold pakistan accountable for the lack of testing. Pakistan is definitely also encouraging its citizens not to get tested. Many people I know who have had covid symptoms have simply been told by thier doctors that they have covid without being tested. Just imagine the massive under reporting that must be going on!!!

Its also very fishy how pakistan reduces its testing whenever the positivity rises in order to keep the reported cases between 5 to 6 thousand. Take a look at the last 2 to 3 weeks of data. Whenever the positivity rises the testing for those days is reduced and whenever the positivity rate reduces the testing is increased. Testing a week or so ago had increased to around 70k and now when the positivity has increased the testing has all of a sudden reduced to around 45k tests per week. The pakistani government has to be questioned regarding this.

Any news on how the roll out for the vaccination is going?, any figures available

I dont have the exact figures but Pakistan is significantly behind in terms of vaccinating its citizens compared to other South Asian countries such as India and Bangladesh. India has vaccinated around 10% of its population with the first dose. Bangladesh has vaccinated 3.6% of its population with the first dose. Pakistan is lagging having vaccinated less than 1% of its population with the first dose.

All what you mentioned is intentional to keep COVID-19 cases artificially down.

Sometimes I wish even India was under also the Rule of Fauj. Then there will no Testing, no positive cases and everyone will be happy , Pakistan style. Then India will also a success story like Pakistan and everyone will congratulate each other for escaping the Convid.

Pakistan broke its covid daily death record a few days ago with 157 deaths. This record has been shattered by today's figures with 201 reported deaths in the last 24 hours. Significant increase in deaths.

No ones going to hold a poor overpopulated resource-strapped country "responsible", these tests costs money and they require at least some personnel to administer

loool y'all are so despearate to make it look like Pakistan is in as a situation as India is :)) Pakistanis death rates and hospitlization rates are nowhere near as high as they are in India, you guys literally can't even cremate or bury your dead, so far Pakistan is not facing that situation and hopefully it won't
