First patients arrive at London's new coronavirus hospital

The first patients have been admitted to the new Nightingale Hospital in London, which has been set up in just nine days at the Excel Exhibition Centre to handle the coronavirus crisis.

The facility, which was officially opened by Prince Charles on Friday, will provide up to 4,000 beds equipped with ventilators and oxygen and be used for those who require further intensive care treatment for COVID-19.

Around 25,000 doctors, nurses and support staff will work at the location once it is fully operational.

The admissions come two weeks after the hospital with a planned capacity of 4,000 was formally announced - although an NHS spokesperson stressed limits had not been reached at other sites in London.

Nightingale initially has 500 beds in place, with space for another 3,500. It will care for patients with the virus in intensive care who have been transferred from other London hospitals.

Fourteen transport workers have died in London after contracting the coronavirus, mayor Sadiq Khan has told Sky News.

Mr Khan told Kay Burley@Breakfast that the death toll includes nine bus drivers, as well as three Transport for London workers, an Underground employee and a worker for one of TfL's suppliers.

The mayor said his condolences were with all those who have lost their lives as a result of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Mr Khan stressed that his office was doing a "number of things" to ensure that transport in the capital was "as safe as possible".

"We've made sure, for example, that we're using advanced cleaning regimes," he said.

"We're using antiviral disinfectant, the sort of stuff you use in hospitals, to clean not just the steering wheels, but the handles, the bus garages, the restrooms.

"We've also made sure that passengers can't sit too near a bus driver.

"We've made sure there's perspex glass between the bus driver and passenger with a protective film in there as well."

Mr Khan revealed that on some routes, a trial involving passengers only using the back door of the bus to enter and exit the vehicle will now take place.

Sky News has spoken to a number of bus drivers in London who have said they do not believe they have the proper protective equipment to do their job safely.

TfL staff members, who wanted to remain anonymous, said they "are all scared" due to a lack of protective equipment during the COVID-19 outbreak.

TfL have told Sky News that the safety of staff and customers is "our absolute priority", adding that it has been working with bus companies, the mayor and the Unite union to "implement a range of changes and improvements to keep the bus network and garages safe for those operating and using it".

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is nowhere near lifting the lockdown measures it put in place to tackle the spread of the coronavirus as the peak is still more than a week away, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said on Wednesday.

When he announced the nationwide lockdown on March 23, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it would be reviewed after three weeks.

Asked during an interview on BBC Radio whether the lockdown should be lifted next Monday, Khan said: “I think we are nowhere near lifting the lockdown.

“We think the peak, which is the worst part of the virus, is still probably a week and a half away,” he added.

Britons have been living under stringent restrictions on movement in the last few weeks in a bid to halt the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

"At the moment that is not the right moment."

The government instructions state that people should only be leaving their house during the lockdown for food, health reasons, outdoor exercise or to go to work if they cannot do their job from home.

When he announced the lockdown last month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the measures would be reviewed every three weeks.

On Easter Monday, it will be three weeks since the lockdown was imposed.

But the PM's admission to hospital - and subsequent move to intensive care - has thrown the timing of the review into question and raised fears of a power vacuum.

Mr Johnson's condition remains "stable", according to the latest update from Downing Street on Tuesday evening.

Speaking at the government's daily coronavirus press conference that day, Dominic Raab suggested the lockdown review could be pushed back.

Speaking to Sky News on Wednesday, Mr Argar reiterated the point made by the foreign secretary about ensuring the peak of the outbreak has passed before easing the lockdown restrictions.

"As the chief scientific adviser said there are some positive signs in terms of the rate of growth of the virus slowing," he said.

Another 938 coronavirus patients have died in the UK, taking the total to 7,097.

In England, more 828 coronavirus patients have died in hospital in England, taking the total to 6,483.

The latest figures, released by NHS England, count newly-confirmed deaths of hospital patients who have COVID-19, reported up until 5pm on Tuesday.

Patients were aged between 22 and 103, and 46 (aged 35 to 96) had no known underlying health condition.

The highest number of coronavirus fatalities came in London, with 201, followed by 171 in the Midlands, where a temporary mortuary is nearing completion at Birmingham Airport.

Also reporting three figures were the North West with 128 the South East with 120, and the North East with 101.


There were 70 deaths recorded in the East of England and 37 in the South West.

It is the largest overall increase reported by NHS England so far.

The other home nations have also reported increases in deaths:

But the different home nations collate their figures at different times throughout the day, so there are sometimes discrepancies between the UK government's total when adding up the individual numbers.

The Department of Health is expected to publish its total update for the UK this afternoon.

The latest increase came amid a growing sense that the UK lockdown will be extended beyond its original timeframe, which comes to an end on Monday.

Britons have been living under stringent restrictions on movement in the last few weeks since the prime minister announced unprecedented measures in a bid to halt the spread of the COVID-19 disease.

Health minister Edward Argar told Kay Burley@Breakfast it was "not the right moment" to make changes, with any decision likely to be made by the cabinet in the absence of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Premier League footballers have announced the launch of a contribution fund called Players Together with money going towards the NHS's charity partner.

"The contributions that this initiative will generate will help NHS Charities Together (NHSCT) quickly grant funds to the front line," a statement said.

Total UK hospital deaths from COVID-19 rose by a record 938 in the last 24 hours to 7,097 as of 16:00 GMT on April 7, health officials said on Wednesday, as the number of cases rose to 60,733.

Meanwhile, Johnson's government reviewed the most stringent shut down in peacetime history.

The UK is entering what scientists say is the deadliest phase of the outbreak, with deaths expected to continue to rise over the Easter weekend.

The government's emergency response meeting, known as COBR, will on Thursday discuss how it should deal with a review on lockdown measures.

Raab has not spoken to PM

Oliver Wright from the Times asks if Acting PM Dominic Raab has had any contact with Boris Johnson since he went into hospital.

"Not yet," replies Raab, adding: "I think it is important to let him focus on the recovery - we in the government have got this covered."

Wright also asks if the Office of National Statistics figures on coronavirus deaths, expected next week, will be higher than NHS figures.

Chief Medical Adviser Chris Whitty says NHS figures are useful because "we can get them very fast - that allows us to see in near time the trends over time".

The british media and government aren't providing accurate figures.

There is no distinction between the following:

1. Someone who has died as a result of Covid19
2. Someone who has died with Covid19

They are putting all of it into one bracket which gives these inflated numbers and the people are falling for it. In many cases they're not actually testing and videos exposing the lies are being taken down online.

So the reality is - we won't ever get accurate figures.

One thing i am unable to understand that Pakistan has 727 people recovered and 66 casualties. On the other hand in UK only 135 recoveries and sadly almost 8000 people died. This is such a big difference.
Why people in Uk are struggling to recover, they have batter health facilities than Pakistan.

The figures are from people who were reluctantly tested by the NHS and private medical facilities due to either paying for it or being so concerned that these people may need a ventilator.

1. Someone who has died as a result of Covid19
2. Someone who has died with Covid19

They are putting all of it into one bracket which gives these inflated numbers and the people are falling for it. In many cases they're not actually testing and videos exposing the lies are being taken down online.

Further 866 deaths announced in England

NHS England has announced 866 further deaths of people who had tested positive for Covid-19.

It brings the total number of confirmed deaths in hospitals in England to 8,114.

Of the new deaths announced today, 117 occurred on 9 April, 720 between 1 April and 8 April, and 29 in March.

Have you considered the video you had bookmarked was possibly removed because it was either misleading or violated patients privacy? Struggling to find many videos of the UK, perhaps you have another you can link to?

You're taking the **** about judging how busy an A&E was whilst driving past, surely? You judged how busy a department of a building, designed to maximise privacy where possible, whilst driving past (ignoring the fact they're clearly going to be quieter than usual anyway)? You're joking, right?

What we do know for starters is those people tested positive for coronavirus and were in a hospital. That was when he had less than 10% of the current deaths of people with coronavirus than we currently do.

My daughter is a medic student who has seen closely what is happening in our hospitals.
My cousin is a front line doctor and she is nursing people who are dying every hour.
Our next door neighbours are elderly and have a young daughter who is a doctor at the Nightingale Hospital, prior to that she was at another hospital. Its she lying to us about the number of people being brought unable to breath?

Another doctor told me that in the world something like (all approximate figures) 121,000 people have died from seasonal flu between January and April 2020. 246,000 from Malaria, 270,000 from suicide, 421,000 from HIV/Aids, 627,000 from alcohol, 2 million from cancer...

In the same period 97,000 have died from Covid-19.. Thats 97,000 people more then usual, i.e. in any given year. Furthermore, the death rates are increasing and would already have been higher had countries not locked down.

Finally, our neighbours across the road, three of them have the disease, with one going to have pneumonia and is currently fighting for his life.

So you, like I said before, there is an entire thread for conspiracies so why can't you just stick to that thread if all you want to do is to disprove everything.

They are taking all sorts of videos down - I had many legitimate videos - normal people going to hospitals and asking nurses/security questions about how things were - most are down. Surprised the one I have left in my bookmarks (NYC hospital) somehow hasn't been taken down.

If the situation is as bad as everyone is telling us - I would expect there to be lots and lots of activity. People coming and going, deliveries. How are patients getting to the hospital, how are they getting out? To tell us that the hospitals are almost overwhelmed and then see nothing of the sort - you say I'm joking?

The part in bold is utter nonsense and more importantly it's false. 97K have died with Covid19 - not as a result or "from it". In some cases it's just pushed some on the brink over the edge, in some cases it's been the cause. But you and everyone else need to change your wording to - xyz have died with covid19 (tested positive) - it makes a huge difference. All of a sudden the numbers are not as massive as people say.

I don't see what is a conspiracy - you have a few examples and so do I. There is an uncle in our community who had heart issues and asthma. According to the figures - he's included as being one of the many who have died "from covid19" but in reality he was vulnerable and covid19 was not the cause but a factor.
