ust playing politics and nothing else. Jagmeet singh also send a similar tweet eventhough he says that his symptoms are not consistent with COVID-19. Why are these idiots playing politics over a disease :@

One thing is clear the response from majority govn leaders was pathetic to say the least.

Already people were losing their faith in political establishments and now even more so, apparently Iranians don’t even trust that their health minister has the disease and is just faking it so later he gets well and shows he is cured.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.
It's a very good post especially when everyone is spreading false info cause we don't know what's happening

This virus isn't anything we have seen before because of how highly contingent it is

This notion you can catch the coronavirus through imported products from China is false !

From CDC:

In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures. Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases of COVID-19 in the United States associated with imported goods.

Italy tightens lockdown after coronavirus death toll soars

Italy tightened its coronavirus quarantine on Wednesday, ordering bars, restaurants and hairdressing and beauty salons to close, after the highest daily increase in deaths of any country outside China since the outbreak began.

In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said all shops would be closed except for supermarkets, food stores and chemists and companies must close all non-essential departments.

"Thank you to all Italians who make sacrifices. We are proving to be a great nation," Conte said in the nine-minute broadcast.

"We will only be able to see the effects of this great effort in a couple of weeks," he said, referring to the daily bulletins announcing the number of new cases and fatalities.

On Wednesday the death toll in Europe's worst-affected country jumped by 196 in 24 hours to 827. Confirmed cases across the country rose to 12,462 from a previous 10,149.

The latest measures will take effect from Thursday and remain in place until March 25, the prime minister's office said.

"The country needs responsibility from all of us, the responsibility of 60 million Italians that are making small and large sacrifices every day," Conte said.

Sombre address
His sombre address echoed the words Conte used just two days ago when he widened a quarantine in the worst-hit northern regions to the whole of the country, banning all non-essential travel and public gatherings until April 3, halting sports events and extending a shutdown of schools.

The existing restrictions on public gatherings and travel had already emptied streets amid the forced closure of schools, universities and museums. Many other businesses had also shut.

Cathedrals posted hand-written notes cancelling mass and cafes apologised to their regulars for having to turn them away.

The central streets of Rome were deserted on Wednesday evening and buses that are usually crammed with commuters ran almost empty.

"I can't even recognise Rome now," 30-year-old Muscovite Yekaterina said while posing alone for a photo by the usually bustling Trevi Fountain in the heart of Rome.

Under the latest measures, trains and urban public transport will continue to operate, as will essential services such as plumbers, mechanics and petrol stations.

Such measures are taking a heavy toll on Italy's economy and Conte announced earlier set aside 25 billion euros ($28.3bn) to support firms and families and soften the effect of the virus.

Elderly people are particularly susceptible to the virus and Italy has the oldest population in Europe with nearly a quarter of people aged 65 or over.

Most Italians appear to be respecting the most severe controls placed on any Western nation since World War II.

An opinion poll by the Ixe agency showed 89 percent of Italians backed their authorities' draconian measures, with 78 percent saying they would support even tougher steps.

People have been told to keep at least a metre (three feet) from each other and handshakes are frowned upon. Italians have found themselves starting to talk to each other a few steps apart - while often laughing about the regulations along the way.

"As soon as the emergency has passed, we will organise a free carbonara day for doctors, nurses and healthcare workers," a closing note by a restaurant in Rome's popular Trastevere neighbourhood said.

You are not alone in it. This response is universal.

It's too early to say but I think Corona needs neat and clean environment to survive. Dirty and Polluted environment of Pakistan may actually be of a benefit against Corona.

Yes, pathetic by the government.

They just don’t seem to understand the situation and how it is spreading...

Corona can't survive for long outside of human body. Max 48 hours. It is a different kind of virus.

Highly crowded places and human to human contact helps corona spread. Like jummah prayer, overcrowded busses or Bazar. Best thing is don't shake hands and stay home as much as possible.

China is not that clean, still it spread like wildfire. From what I have seen in the news, and read, this thing survives about 3 days on hard surfaces (i.e glass - phones should be cleaned regularly).

I just went out to buy hand sanitizers. They are sold out! People are buying these in big numbers.

I think it is a good idea to buy these important things. There will likely be a huge shortage.

Just get wipes or swabs instead that have an alcohol content higher than 60%.

I bought some alochol wipes from the pharmacy where I work today. We cannot source any sanitisers from our wholesalers. There are sanitisers being sold online but priced way over the odds.

Coronavirus: New York City mayor declares state of emergency

New York City's mayor Bill de Blasio has declared a state of emergency to fight the spread of the coronavirus outbreak - as he criticised Donald Trump's response.

Mr de Blasio signed the executive order and said he supported an announcement by New York governor Andrew Cuomo earlier on Thursday that banned gatherings of more than 500 people across the state.

He said 95 people have now been confirmed as having COVID-19 in New York City, but his team of mathmatical modelling experts has predicted about 1,000 people could be infected by next week.

The executive order will allow the mayor to:

Impose curfews

Regulate whether vehicles or individuals may enter or exit parts of the city

Close down public transport

Stop hospitals carrying out elective procedures

Ration essential items and introduce price caps to prevent price gouging

Prohibit or restrict people on streets and public places

Regulate consumption of alcohol and use of guns

Create emergency medical shelters

Limit maximum building capacity

Mr de Blasio emphasised that so far the only prohibition is on large crowds, which will affect the city's sports venues and Broadway shows.

He took the announcement to take a swipe at Mr Trump's response to the pandemic after the president took until Wednesday night to bring in any control measures, which included a travel ban on people from mainland Europe - but not the UK and Ireland.

Mr de Blasio said: "It's not worth wasting breath on the wasted opportunities over the past few weeks.

"Last night the president showed much more connection to reality than before.

"But, he was silent on immediate approval of automated testing for coronavirus.

"We want to do widescale testing but we cannot do it without the federal government coming in.

"I believe localities, companies, will take it into their own hands if they do not get approval from federal government."

No parade either for LFC winning the league, something I was really looking forward to.

Scientists in Israel likely to announce it developed coronavirus vaccine

Scientists in Israel are expected to announce in the coming days that they have completed development of a vaccine for the new coronavirus COVID-19, according to a media report here.

Israeli daily Ha'aretz, quoting medical sources, reported on Thursday that scientists at the Israel's Institute for Biological Research, supervised by the Prime Minister's office, have recently had a significant breakthrough in understanding the biological mechanism and qualities of the virus, including better diagnostic capability, production of antibodies for those who already have the virus and development of a vaccine.

The development process, however, requires a series of tests and experiments that may last many months before the vaccination is deemed effective or safe to use, the report said.

The Defence Ministry, however, did not confirm the same in its response to the daily.

"There has been no breakthrough in the efforts of the biological institute to find a vaccine for the coronavirus or to develop testing kits. The institute's work is conducted according to an orderly work plan and it will take time. If and when there will be something to report, it will be done in an orderly fashion", the Defence Ministry told Ha'aretz.

"The biological institute is a world-renowned research and development agency, which relies on experienced researchers and scientists with great knowledge and quality infrastructures. There are now more than 50 experienced scientists working at the institute on researching and developing a medical remedy for the virus," it added.

The Institute for Biological Research, located in the central Israeli town of Nes Tziona, was established in 1952 as part of the Israel Defence Forces' Science Corps, and later became a civilian organisation.

It is technically under the supervision of the Prime Minister's Office, but is in close communication with the Defence Ministry, as per the report.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is said to have ordered the institute to devote resources to develop a vaccine for Covid-19 on Feb 1.

The normal process of development of such a vaccine requires a long process of pre-clinical trials on animals, followed by clinical trials. This period allows for a full characterization of side effects and a better understanding of how different populations are affected, the daily said.

The global emergency over the coronavirus pandemic however may accelerate this process in order to vaccinate as many people who are most at risk from the virus, it said.

Israel's most popular news portal, Ynet, reported about three weeks ago that five shipments of virus samples arrived here from Japan, Italy and other countries.

They were brought by a specially secured Defence Ministry courier to the Institute for Biological Research and had been frozen at -80 degrees Celsius, it said.

There has been intensive work, including by leading experts, to develop the vaccine since then.

Experts believe that the length of time needed to develop a vaccine runs from a few months to a year and a half.

Numerous research teams all over the world are participating in the race to develop a vaccine for COVID-19. Many of them at this point are focusing on the way the virus presents itself in animals, with the biggest hurdle being the way it morphs when it moves from animals to human beings.

China released the genetic sequence of the virus on open scientific databases shortly after its outbreak in January so that research institutes and commercial companies could try to develop treatments and vaccines without requiring to obtain samples.

Around a month and a half after the genetic sequence was published, biotechnology company Moderna, Inc., based in Boston, Massachussets, announced it had completed the development of a possible coronavirus vaccine, Ha'aretz reported.

The vaccine was sent to the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, with clinical trials, which will include up to 25 health participants to start in April, the report said.

Any vaccine developed in Israel will presumably also need to go through a similar or even stricter process before it will be approved for use, the daily said.

Useless news for making Israel look like some sort of saint by an Indian news garbage. The US has 10 such vaccines but the testing and verification takes 12-18 months.

Israel is a top country when it comes to research and development in science and technology. No need to discard everything just because of a political disagreement.

I doubt usa has 10 vaccines for the current coronavirus and only needs proper testing. US at the moment doesn't even have enough testing kits. Trump scrued up real bad. The situation in US isn't looking good at all.

A virus doesn't care about your race, country or religion. Israeli have as much an interest into solving this problem as the rest of the world. They aren't doing the research just because they are saints.

Mount Everest has shut down for the rest of the expedition season because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Nepal's government announced that it would cancel all climbing permits from 14 March until 30 April.

China had already cancelled expeditions from the northern, Chinese-controlled, side of the mountain.

According to the Kathmandu Post, the Nepal earns $4m (£3.1m) by issuing Everest climbing permits every year, aside from wider tourism revenue.

"We have decided to halt all tourist visas until 30 April," said Narayan Prasad Bidari, Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office.

"As of now, all issued permits and permits yet to be issued for the 2020 Everest season will be cancelled."

It also advised foreigners who were unable to avoid coming to Nepal from 14 March to stay in quarantine for 14 days.

Most climbers come from the US, India, China, UK, Japan, and South Korea - and are a major source of revenue for the Nepalese government.

Typically, anyone who wants to climb Everest needs to pay the government $11,000 (£8,700), though there were talks by the government to raise this figure.

And that's not including fees that are typically paid to the travel companies, which can also run up tens of thousands.

Local sherpas who work as mountain guides will also be affected.

"My nine Chinese clients and a Japanese client have cancelled already. Many trekking teams are not coming, which is a big loss for sherpas like us who make most of our money during this time," Lakpa Sherpa, managing director of Pioneer Adventure, told BBC Nepali.

There is currently one confirmed virus case in Nepal, but the country borders India which has more than 70 cases.

Nepal's government has asked its citizens to avoid mass gatherings including marriages and public functions.

More than 125,000 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in 118 countries around the world, according to the World Health Organization. The total number of deaths is more than 4,600.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who recently called the coronavirus pandemic a “fantasy,” has tested positive for the illness, according to a local report.

“He waits for the result of the counter-proof this Friday (13) to confirm the contamination. There is tension in the air. Despite spending quiet time on TV, and asking the people to avoid the streets (a clear cancellation of the call for Sunday’s pro-government demonstrations), Bolsonaro does not hide the evidence,” according to a translation in the local news outlet Jornal Odia.

“He appeared in a mask this morning and did not leave the Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence.”

The far-right leader had been being monitored for the deadly bug that has spread to at least 34 people in the Latin American country, Reuters reported, citing the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.

Bolsonaro previously tried to downplay the worldwide health threat Tuesday during a visit to Miami, Florida.

“During the past year, obviously, we have had moments of crisis. A lot of that is fantasy. And coronavirus, which is not [what] all the mainstream media makes it out to be,” he said.

Bolsonaro returned to Brazil this week after meeting Saturday with President Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Miami.

The White House said earlier in the week that Trump was in “excellent health” after shaking hands with a congressman exposed to the virus.

Bolsonaro’s communications director, Fábio Wajngarten, who attended weekend events with Trump in Florida, also has tested positive for the coronavirus — marking the first time that someone known to have the virus was in close proximity to the president.

Trump does not plan to be tested or go into self-quarantine, the White House has said.

What a poor post.

I take my words back...she indeed tested positive.

Though I remain correct about Jagmeet singh.
Also govt needs to do something for those who want to get tested. At this point there is a helpline and all they do is send you to the hospital for testing and you have to wait 8 hours to get a swab test, which is ridiculous. They need to set up temporary areas for testing. Sending them to hospital can make those critically ill patients who are already suffering at risk.

Thoughts?

Trump is incompetent, he only think for himself.

Number of cases will increase exponentially in US and Canada.

First Scottish coronavirus death confirmed

The first death of a patient after contracting coronavirus in Scotland has been confirmed.

The Chief Medical Officer Catherine Calderwood said the individual was elderly and had underlying health conditions.

She said: "I am saddened to report that a patient in Scotland who has tested positive for Coronavirus has died in hospital.

"I offer my deepest sympathy to their friends and family at this difficult time.

"The patient, who was being treated by Lothian Health Board was an older person who had underlying health conditions.

"No further information will be available to protect patient confidentiality."

Agreed.

These hospitals are overcrowded and you have to wait a long time just to get a simple test done.

I really don't know what to say. Things are looking chaotic.

A Canadian company says it has made a breakthrough in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak, claiming to have developed a COVID-19 vaccine candidate that could begin human testing as early as this summer.

Quebec City-based Medicago said it has produced a virus-like particle of the novel coronavirus, a first step towards producing a vaccine, which will now undergo pre-clinical testing for safety and efficacy.

Medicago said it could begin human trials as soon as July or August if approved by Health Canada and other agencies.

Company CEO Bruce Clark told Global News that if the vaccine is successful it could be available to the wider public by November 2021. Other media reports erroneously said the vaccine could be ready by November of this year.

“These timelines are heavily reliant on what will give the regulators enough comfort to say this product is ready to go into human testing and then, secondly, for use in the broader public,” he said. “Our best guess right now is 18 months.”

Clark said Medicago researchers were able to produce a candidate vaccine within just 20 days of obtaining the gene of the virus.

If they are given the green light, they could produce as many as 10 million doses a month out of their plant in North Carolina, according to Clark. The company currently has the resources to create about two million doses a month out of its plant in Quebec.

The biopharmaceutical company said it was able to create a vaccine candidate quickly as it used a plant-based platform, not chicken embryos, to help grow vaccine proteins.

“We have a [seasonal flu vaccine] that is currently under review with Health Canada, and the [technology] we are using for this COVID vaccine is exactly the same, which has proven to be efficacious,” Clark said.

Dawn Bowdish, Canada Research Chair in aging and immunity at McMaster University, said the company’s ability to grow virus-like particles in plants has helped it produce vaccines in the past against influenza, including a vaccine candidate against H1N1 in 2009.

“A virus-like particle looks like the outside of a virus but doesn’t have any of the genetic material on the inside,” said Bowdish, who also sits on the scientific advisory board of Medicago. “It doesn’t cause infection but looks really similar from your immune system’s perspective.”

Medical researchers around the world have been racing to develop a vaccine for COVID-19, which has sickened more than 127,000 people and killed roughly 5,000. As of Friday morning, there were 159 confirmed cases in Canada, including the prime minister’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau.

Medicago said it’s also working to develop antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the pathogen that causes COVID-19, in collaboration with the Laval University’s Infectious Disease Research Centre headed by Dr. Gary Kobinger, who helped develop a vaccine and treatment for Ebola. The research is being partly funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).

“The hope is that we’ll be able to create antibodies that as soon as the virus gets into us, it covers it so it can no longer infect cells,” Bowdish said.

Although this was “good news,” Bowdish cautioned that most vaccine trials fail and in 17 years there was never a vaccine fully developed for the SARS outbreak.

“It’s unlikely there will be a miracle drug,” she said. “But Canada has had some incredible successes creating vaccines very quickly. We had huge success with the Ebola virus.”

Other vaccine candidates to be tested
Globally, there are roughly 20 coronavirus vaccine candidates being developed by research institutes and drugmakers, including America’s Johnson & Johnson and France’s Sanofi SA, according to Reuters.

In China, dozens of clinical trials are underway, according to the World Health Organization, as medical researchers work to evaluate everything from HIV drugs to stem cells and even traditional medicines to treat COVID-19.

Two pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. are getting close to human testing.

Biotechnology company Moderna Inc. — working with the U.S.-funded National Institutes of Health (NIH) — has announced plans to start a trial of a vaccine candidate on 45 people in Seattle this month. Testing on animals will proceed simultaneously with human trials, the NIH told Reuters.

Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc., an immunotherapy company, is working with a company in China to develop a vaccine and expects to start human clinical trials in 30 U.S. volunteers in April.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee on Thursday that human trials for a vaccine would be possible “within a few weeks.”

“We said … it would take two to three months to have it in the first human,” Fauci said. “I think we’re going to do better than that. I hope within a few weeks we may be able to make an announcement to you all that we’ve given the first shot to the first person.”

However, he tempered expectations, stating a vaccine would not be widely available for another 12 to 18 months. The World Health Organization has also made similar projections.

“I want to make sure people understand, and I’ve said that over and over again, that does not mean we have a vaccine that we can use,” he said. “We mean it’s record time to get it tested. It’s going to take a year to a year and a half to really know if it works.”

The WHO has said that there’s currently no vaccine and no specific antiviral medicine to prevent or treat COVID-19, but that possible vaccines and some specific drug treatments are currently under investigation.

Mr Trump said: "We may have to include the UK in the European travel ban after the number of cases have increased."

Mr Trump said he and his staff have "no symptoms whatsoever" after meeting Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro earlier this week.

Mr Bolsonaro's communications chief, who was also there, has tested positive but the president said this morning he tested negative.

Mr Trump says the House Democrats are "not giving enough" over a coronavirus relief bill.

Mr Trump said: "No nation is more prepared or more equipped. We're rated number one in the world and we're helping other nations.

"Some nations are doing well, some not, but we're helping them."

Coronavirus spreads to more African countries

Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Guinea announced their first confirmed cases of coronavirus on Friday as the disease has now spread to at least 18 countries in Africa.

Other African countries that reported cases of the disease are Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Senegal, Togo, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Africa, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Gabon and Ghana. Most of the countries' totals are still in single figures.

Kenya is the richest economy in East Africa and a hub for global firms and the United Nations. Ethiopia is Africa's second-most populous nation, with 109 million citizens.

Cases rise in Africa
Africa had so far largely been spared the rapid spread of COVID-19, which has infected at least 132,000 and killed nearly 5,000 worldwide.

Rapid testing and quarantines have been put in place to limit transmission. But concerns are growing about the continent's ability to handle the disease.

In the Kenyan capital Nairobi, authorities banned all major public events and said they would restrict foreign travel.

The mayor of Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa urged citizens to avoid close personal contact but the health minister said there were no plans to cancel flights.

Most of Africa's reported cases were foreigners or people who had travelled abroad.

Kenyan Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe on Friday said their first case, a 27-year-old Kenyan, was diagnosed on Thursday after she travelled home via London on March 5.

He said the government had traced most of the people she had been in contact with, including fellow passengers on her flight, and a government response team would monitor their temperatures for the next two weeks.

The Ethiopian case was a 48-year old Japanese national who arrived in the country on March 4, the health ministry said.

Guinea's first case was an employee of the European Union delegation, who had self-isolated after she felt ill upon returning from Europe, the EU delegation said.

Sudan's first confirmed coronavirus case was a man who died on Thursday in capital Khartoum, the country's health ministry said. He had visited the United Arab Emirates in the first week of March.

Only five people have succumbed to coronavirus so far - all in North Africa - with the Sub-Saharan region recording no deaths and very low numbers of confirmed cases.

Safety measures
The island nation of Mauritius, whose economy depends on tourism and financial services, said it was seeking to mitigate the effects of the virus by offering liquidity to banks to support struggling firms and cutting the cash reserve requirements for banks.

Mauritius has not yet reported any cases of COVID-19 so far.

In Rwanda, which shares a border with the DRC, which has confirmed cases, washbasins with soap and sanitiser have been placed on streets for commuters to use before boarding buses.

Authorities in Kigali, the capital, have also banned concerts, rallies and trade fairs - although church services have been proceeding and bars, restaurants and entertainment precincts remain open.

Neighbouring Burundi, meanwhile, has quarantined 34 people in a hotel in Bujumbura as a precaution.

Uganda has ordered that visitors from a number of affected countries self-quarantine for 14 days, or consider simply not visiting at all.

South Sudan's health ministry said it was "temporarily suspending direct flights between South Sudan and all affected countries".

Europe is now the "epicentre" of the global coronavirus pandemic, the head of the World Health Organization says.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged countries to use aggressive measures, community mobilisation and social distancing to save lives.

"Do not just let this fire burn," he said.

His comments came as several European countries reported steep rises in infections and deaths. Italy has recorded its highest daily toll yet.

There were 250 deaths recorded over the past 24 hours, taking the total to 1,266, with 17,660 infections overall.

Spain, the worst-affected European country after Italy, reported a 50% jump in fatalities to 120 on Friday. Infections increased to 4,231.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says a state of alert will come into effect there on Saturday for two weeks.

Controls are also being introduced at an increasing number of borders in Europe, in response to rapid spread of the virus.

Why is Europe the 'epicentre'?
More than 132,500 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in 123 countries around the world, according to the WHO.

The total number of deaths has reached about 5,000 - a figure Dr Tedros described as "a tragic milestone".

"Europe has now become the epicentre of the pandemic, with more reported cases and deaths than the rest of the world combined, apart from China," he said.

"More cases are now being reported every day than were reported in China at the height of its epidemic."

As well as the increases in Spain and Italy, France has now confirmed 2,876 cases and 79 deaths, up from a total of 61 deaths on Thursday.

Germany has seen 3,062 cases and five deaths. There have been 798 confirmed infections in the UK and 11 deaths.

What are European countries doing about it?
Announcing the state of alert in Spain, Mr Sanchez said the government would "mobilise all the resources of state to better protect the health of all of its citizens".

It will be able to limit movement, order evacuations, prohibit access to certain places and intervene in industry for up to 15 days.

"Victory depends on every single one of us," Mr Sanchez said. "Heroism is also about washing your hands and staying at home."

All but "essential travel" to parts of Spain should be avoided, says the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Italy has imposed a nationwide lockdown.

Meanwhile, at least 10 other countries in Europe are enforcing border closures, including:

Belgium, France, Switzerland and parts of Germany are among the latest countries to close schools.

There are also widespread curbs on large gatherings and measures to close theatres, restaurants and bars.

Germany's Bundesliga, the only one of the big five European football leagues still being played, is to suspend games in the top two divisions from Tuesday.

Paris's Louvre - the largest art museum in the world - announced it would close from Friday, as will the Eiffel Tower.

New Zealand's PM has said nearly everyone entering the country from midnight on Sunday must self-isolate to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Jacinda Ardern said the new measure also included returning New Zealanders. The only exemption is for small Pacific islands with no confirmed virus cases.

"I make no apologies. This is an unprecedented time," Ms Ardern said, describing the new rules as the strictest in the world.

New Zealand has six confirmed cases.

Speaking at Saturday's news briefing, Ms Ardern said the new restrictions would be reviewed by the authorities in 16 days.

The prime minister also said that no cruise liners would be allowed to dock in New Zealand's ports until 30 June.

But Ms Ardern said essential air and ship deliveries would continue as normal.

She said the restrictions were "about people, not products", stressing that there was no need for New Zealanders to "take a run on their supermarket".

"If you don't need to travel overseas, then don't. Enjoy your own backyard for a time. Stop handshakes, hugs and hongi [a traditional Maori greeting in which people press their noses together].

"We are a tough, resilient people. We have been here before," the prime minister added.

Earlier this month, Israel announced that anyone arriving in the country would be self-quarantined for 14 days.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia will suspend international flights for two weeks from Sunday to slow down the spread of the coronavirus, the Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday.

On Friday, 24 new cases of COVID-19 infections were reported in the Kingdom, raising the total to 86.

The suspension will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, the ministry said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency.

Some flights would only be allowed in "exceptional cases" during the two-week period, the ministry said.

For residents who cannot come back during this period, it will be considered as an official holiday.

Necessary arrangements will be made regarding health procedures such as examination and isolation according to the preventive measures approved for all arrivals.

The Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, the Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant parties, will arrange for the arrival of citizens who wish to return, and the relevant procedures will be soon announced, the statement added.

Earlier this week, the entire European Union and 12 other countries in Asia and Africa were added to a list of countries in which travel to and from the Kingdom is suspended.
