Consider this thread therapy where you can talk out the events of the Final, talk about the team going forward for 2023 so the team can look to right the wrongs and exorcise the demons of 2019.

I don't think NZ will get a better chance than the 2019 WC Finals where they had the suitable conditions and fortune of luck on their side in the earlier stages of the tournament.

The 2023 WC will be played on the spin assisting Indian tracks where the NZ batters are expected to struggle and its even doubtful whether Henry, Boult and Lokie will still be at their best after four years.

Ages of the 2019 squad

Martin Guptill, 32
Henry Nicholls, 27
Kane Williamson, 28
Ross Taylor, 35
Tom Latham, 27
Jimmy Neesham, 28
Colin de Grandhomme, 32
Mitchell Santner, 27
Matt Henry, 27
Trent Boult, 29
Lockie Ferguson, 28

Colin Munro, 32; Tim Southee, 30; Ish Sodhi, 26; Tom Blundell, 28

I can't see Guptill, Taylor, Lockie, CdG or Southee being around for 2023. And who knows how good Boult and Henry will be in 2023.

On the wings we have Will Young (26), Tim Seifert (24), Finn Allen (20), Glenn Phillips (22) and Rachin Ravindra (19).

I think they won a CT back in 2000. Chris Cairns went nuts in the final against India. THey had two of their best chances in 2015 and 2019. In India they are unlikely to win the world cup as subcontinent teams will dominate. 2027 is their next shot.

Each one is going to matter because of 2019, even if it's unlikely. Have to go into them having to win because of this year... A loss like that sticks like 99 for South Africa, cricketers who haven't even played for NZ yet will have it on them. Only way to erase it is to win the damn thing, hopefully with England getting shafted along the way :))

'Sorry we let you down': Boult's message to NZ

Cricket hero Trent Boult has apologised to New Zealand fans for "letting everyone down" as the first group of Black Caps touched down in Auckland following their heartbreaking World Cup final defeat to England.

Boult was one of a handful of players to return to the country after Monday's final, during which scores were twice tied and the Black Caps were beaten to a first World Cup triumph on a boundary countback.

Boult bowled both the final over of the 50-over match and the Super Over in which England scored 15 runs, after earlier taking a catch on the boundary, only to stand on the boundary cushion.

The left-arm seamer, who was one of the leading wicket-takers in the tournament with 17 scalps, admitted it would take some time for the players to get over the final result.

"It's been a long flight home but it [the defeat] probably hasn't sunk in yet. I wish it would, so we can all get over it but it's one of those things that we probably won't get over for a long time."

Boult said the final over - in which the Black Caps conceded a controversial six runs after a throw from Martin Guptill struck a diving Ben Stokes' bat and sped to the boundary, effectively sending the final into a Super Over - continued to haunt him.

"It's natural to nitpick, to wonder about all those little things and how it could have been a totally different game. I've been living that last over in my mind a lot - somehow I got hit for six along the ground which has never happened before. To see the scores level [after the Super Over] and still lose, yeah, that was a pretty unique situation."

Talking about his catch of Stokes, that ended up going for six runs, Boult revealed that Guptill (who was running in to his left) tried to warn him that the boundary rope was close.

"The priority in that situation is on the ball itself, so that was all I was worried about. It was silly of me not to know where the rope was. It was similar to the catch against the West Indies earlier in the tournament but they're quite quirky boundaries over there [at Lord's]. They're not circles, they're kind of octagons and squares and all sorts of things.

"You can imagine the feeling when my left shoe hit the cushion and it was too late to throw the ball to Marty. There were probably 27,000 intoxicated Poms in there screaming as the ball went up, so I couldn't hear anything Marty was saying."

The messages of support from the public have been overwhelming, Boult said.

"We've just been on a plane 15 hours and there were a lot of Kiwis saying 'we felt for you'.

"I didn't really know what to say. Obviously, we're all hurting and we're sorry for letting everyone down. I just want to get home, walk my dog along the beach and try to forget about it but it's gonna be a hard one to swallow for the next couple of years."

NZ is a fantastic team. Very humble and hardworking. There's no potty mouth in this team.

I hope you will win a World Cup one day.

It comes down to format as well. There might be some formats which will enable you to get to knock outs easily. From then on it is a case of having 2 good days in a row.

I personally feel that NZ has a golden opportunity to win a World Cup next year (World T20).

The reason why I think NZ has good chance is because it is in Australia. Those pitches should suit Kiwis well.

Doesn't count and no one really cares about the T20 WC in NZ. Not the same.

Though i believe NZ were robbed of the 2019 wc and i feel sorry for them, i can't wish that they win the next world cup or any future wcs, as that wish is reserved for pakistan, sorry!!

Don't worry they will win it before SA.

SA I reckon is the team that they will win the final against. NZ got rid of their semi final streak against them too.

Pakistan is also very unpredictable, if NZ and Pak are in a final anything can happen

ENG, AUS are much much stronger mentally.

Then you may have to wait for 12 years. 2023 WC is in India and 2027 one is probably going to be in UAE (not confirmed yet). I highly doubt NZ can win WC in Asia.

This loss might traumatized NZ players forever. These kind of losses actually ruin careers and teams. I hope NZ boys are mentally strong and don't let this affect them.

NZ havnt even won a T20 World Cup. You guys should focus on that at least. That should be achievable soon I think.

Only 2 big teams are left without a WC win now and I am sure they will win one one day.

When you havnt won much tournaments, I would be hesitant to put World T20 cup. No one will remember you guys for going to finals. Even Sri Lanka have countless amount of tournaments final appearance and so does West Indies.

People will remember this final for the next 50+ years unless India Pakistan make it to a final against each other

Will Young has to be playing WC 2023 surely. Is Sean Solia any good ? What about Andrew Fletcher ?

I think World T20 should be taken seriously. It is a World Cup just like ODI World Cup. NZ should try to win T20 WC because they were #1 in T20 not long ago.

I don't know about any talent coming through NZ. Hopefully there is . Don't see a lot of these players being around in 2023. Posters saying NZ won't win the WC, I wouldn't rule it out. They always get to semis then it's 2 good days from there.

NZ have a strong sporting culture. I expect them to remain a strong force in cricket . But they need a slight change in mentality if they want to compete with the big 3 regularly.

Can't see NZ winning WC in Asia. Too much to ask. They don't have any threatening spinner. Santner is a containing bowler (not a wicket taker).

The WC is 4 years away. You don't know who they could produce. They aren't one of my favourites , but I would not rule them out from causing another upset.

Why wouldn't Ferguson still be around? he'll only be 31 during the 2023 tournament, still very much a fast bowler's prime. Taylor's also said that he's not ruling out coming back in 2023.

31-32, who knows how his body holds up.
