"Cricket boards have a responsibility to say farewell to their cricketers in a proper way": S Afridi

Shahid Afridi speaking on TV:

"I had a great career in which I helped the team win and at other times, I let the team down as well"

"I was double-minded about retiring after the World T20 due to insistence of my family and friends"

"There was a controversy about the World T20 and whether India would invite us to it"

"I didn't have much expectations from the team for the World T20, we tried many changes before the tournament but the talented players who could fulfil the demands of international cricket weren't there"

"Cricket boards around the world have a responsibility to welcome and say farewell to their cricketers in a proper way, even their Prime Ministers come to the ground for farewells"

"Our Cricket board does not have that trend which is why players like me have to sit and talk about the board"

"No player got a respectful farewell for Pakistan"

"I asked Inzi to set the trend by allowing me to play one game in Dubai against the West Indies"

"Najam Sethi didn't like the idea and said that it was upto Mickey Arthur and when I spoke to Arthur, he said he didn't talk with Sethi on any such issue so I don't know who was playing the game here"

"The people in the Board don't think for the future, they think short term and have aims to help themselves only"

"This show (Cricket Board) is for cricketers and should be run by cricketers and not by bureaucrats"

"Only the top level people like the Chairman should be bureaucrats or politicians"

"People like Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Akhtar should all be used by the board to ask for suggestions to improve our cricket"

"Shahryar Khan has been a respectful and good bureaucrat but he's reached an age where handling media pressure etc. is very difficult"

"I think after Prime Minister the biggest position in the country is that of Chairman PCB - travelling, media, social life is all there. But if utilised properly for the sake of Pakistan cricket, it can be used very beneficially"

"Solution for fixing and corruption is to start from the grass-root levels, kids need to be taught. But the problem is that we haven't set an example. Fixers serve their punishment and come back after 5 years, that's not a good example to set"

"If anyone engages in any form of fixing, they should be banned from all formats of cricket forever"

(Regarding Zalmi departure) "Javed's family is still my family. There are some things I don't want to discuss in public."

"I think I saw Javed's vision for Zalmi change over time. I didn't want to be in the way of his goals."

“I saw Javed’s vision changing with time. I didn’t want to be a hindrance in his new goals and vision. I have a lot of commitments to my own foundation, so I wouldn’t be able to give my services completely to him also. There a lot of projects of my foundation that I need to set my focus on.”

“These things don’t affect our families’ friendship and relation.”

“I wanted to take this decision after the PSL final but I had to fulfill a few commitments with Peshawar Zalmi so I delayed it a little. However, I did want to win the PSL with Peshawar Zalmi and we did that.”

“I married in an early age to stay away from controversies, to not diverge from a straight path”

“First I will continue playing cricket for one or two years, until I think I am fit”

Not when you keep flip-flopping and going back on your word to the chairman.

Not when you keep flip-flopping and going back on your word to the chairman.

He may have flip flopped and i hated him for hittin Harbhajan so bad but at the end of the day he plays the game with passion and deserves respect irrespective of the team he plays for. Man deserves the respect and a proper sendoff. thanks for everything you did Mr. Afridi.

"“Shahid Afridi is Pathan and I am also Pathan and we know that a Pathan’s word is their bond.”

If I recall properly, back in 2015, he extended one more year of his career when he asked his chairman to captain till 2016 Worldcup with his"Pathan ka Waada". He could have been easily dropped.

Dont buy this pathan business everyone says that for their own creed and younis khan was also a pathan the most shameless blackmailing person to play for us in ages does that make all pathans shameless? Well at least yk and afridi are (asking to set the trend? Why? He should be thankful to cricket and the board for the money respect fame etc not the other way around).

Which Player is he talking about ?

Didn't mention any name(s), he was saying it generally...

Don't think any Prime Minister attended a farewell ... maybe Steve Waugh (not sure) ? Even for Tendulkars final match then PM Manmohan Singh did not attend but Indian Govt awarded the Bharat Ratna on the last day of the match. Although the who's who of Mumbai did attend that match.

You could not ask for a farewell when you keep on playing well past your prime. You said you would retire after t20 wc but sadly you didnt keep your word and now bitter on not getting a farewell. The whole wt20 was your farewell.

Depends, if you are a man of your own words like Misbah then you get a farewell, but if you say something and do something else this is how you will get treated. And you deserve it.

Pathan's word is their bond, this is a big joke in Pakistan.

Give it a rest Bhai. No board in the world allows guys with inverse all rounder averages to play nearly two decades

Afridi needs to calm down and just move on from cricket.

No need to give these comments anymore - thank you and goodbye!

Not when you keep flip flopping = which translates to that you do not deserve when you changed your already announced decision based on "family pressure"

He should thank pcb, which allowed him to play as captain in major tournament.

Honestly, its a very tricky one . .

Yes, PCB has historically not been good at retiring stars with grace . .

However, in their defense . . our stars just don't know when to leave!

Rule of thumb has always been: "Leave when people ask you why, rather than why not"

In Australia you get dropped by the selectors, then driven round your home ground in an open top car during the tea break in the next Test there.

It's a way of making sure that you can't attempt a comeback, ever!

whats this obsession with a farewell match? Why does he always want his ego massaging In my mind no player should get an organised final game

Nobody has a right to a cricket match Playing for your country should be a privilege earned to the best with high skill and performance He promised hed retire anyway so whats this

Isnt it enough that hes leached hundreds of games over 20 years or so?

How many players have actually asked for farewell like this ?

He is forcing a farewell for himself

When did he hit Bhajji ?

Yes, the majority of his remarks are mature and sensible but he again has flip-flopped from no longer wanting a farewell (said something along the lines of 'I've made peace with my retirement' just a few weeks ago at the PSL) to making tantrums about not receiving a farewell.

I think the most optimal solution is to give Afridi what he wants and that is a retirement game and to finally end this farce which has been raging since a year back.

Misbah intended to retire after the ENG series was he a man of his words then? and now he's hogging the spotlight and staying on longer then he needs to, it's not very decent is it

Regardless of what you think of Afridi perhaps he did deserve a big send off given how huge he is in Pakistan but he intended to retire at the end of the world T20 and the PCB can't make their plans around someone who constantly changes their mind so their decision is justified, the repercussions are that every now and then Afridi will lobby for a "farewell" in the media.

he was requested by the chairman to carry on.

nope. he was gonna retire, but PCB requested him to stay on.

If he was not requested, he would had hanged his boots

So he conformed to a bit of external pressure and went back on his word, it's like you not wanting to steal but me being the elder saying go for it brother! and then you say to me oh well shaz619 told me to steal so it's okay.

Hahaha comparing a mediocre player like misbah to a living legend, a star that shore so brightly for two decades. Amusing post. If misbah deserves a farewell, afridi deserves 100 farewells
