All in all a good day for Ireland fans, more good news tomorrow hopefully.

There was a double fixture boost for Irish cricket with the news that Ireland will play Hong Kong in two T20I's at Bready in September while Ireland Women will face Bangladesh in six home matches.

Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom also revealed that there would be more fixtures against Full Members announced tomorrow in Belfast.

He was speaking in Dublin as Ireland launched an ambitious five-year plan to become a mainstream sport, with the goal of taking the game to new audiences and beginning to rival the popularity of football, rugby and GAA by 2020.

Not content with grabbing the headlines every few years with stunning performances on the global stage - like beating Pakistan, England and the West Indies at the World Cup - cricket wants a permanent place in the consciousness of the Irish public.

"Our goal of playing Test matches by the end of 2020 needs to be broader and more ambitious – it needs to envision Ireland not just being a major force in cricket, but cricket being a major force in Ireland," said Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom.

"When we think of ‘major’ in Ireland, we think of GAA, rugby and football. Well, why not cricket too?," said Deutrom. "We need to shift perceptions of cricket as an elitist, exclusive sport to one that is open and accessible to ALL. We need to de-mystify the sport for the Irish public by making it visible, accessible, affordable and inspiring."

In his speech to assembled guests, Deutrom outlined the importance of club cricket to the success of the strategic plan, and announced a new scheme to help clubs grow in addition to the support currently provided by the governing body.

"The Cricket Ireland plan recognises clubs as the hub of the sport and places them at the centre of focus for grass-roots development, helping them benefit from the record number of participants at school and youth level currently enjoying the game. We are launching a club fund to assist the clubs with grants for equipment and facilities in addition to the practical support we provide already."

The fund will initially have 50,000 Euros.

The KPC Group were unveiled at the event as main team sponsor for the next three years as well as headline sponsor of the forthcoming home series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and the prestigious Cricket Ireland Awards.

In further good news at the event, Irish sports company O'Neills are putting their shirts on further success for the Ireland cricket team by extending their sponsorship deal for a further four years to the end of the decade.

The Tyrone-based company has been the official kit supplier for Ireland since 2012, and their distinctive shirts were in evidence when The Boys in Green beat the West Indies at the 2015 World Cup and have been worn in three T20 World Cups.

The deal which runs until the end of 2019, will also see O'Neills renewing their sponsorship of the Ulster Cup, Shield and Plate competitions.

As white players are not wanted by South Africa, why not get them to play for Ireland.

Many are already moving to new pastures such as New Zealand.if Ireland gets test status then we will see a lot SA white players moving there

I believe that the South African team should be entirely black or maybe they should have the token white player but then they cant expect white people to pay to watch the rubbish produced. If I was white I would boycott all matches and let there be a transformation in the crowd and have the black fans support the racially selected team.

Good news. One of Ireland's biggest problems is they they just do not play enough matches against top teams. You can only learn so much in the Intercontinental Cup.

I'd quite like to see an annual one-off England vs Ireland ODI and T20 fixture with each country taking turns to host. Large Irish community here in the UK so people will show up.

Ireland to also host a 6 match tri-series involving Bangladesh and New Zealand before the Champions trophy next year.

Looks like Ireland have solid plans in place to develop their cricket. The tri-series with Bangladesh and New Zealand is also great news for them. A terrific development opportunity for them playing two of the best ODI sides in the world.

Need to work hard at grass roots level to produce more homegrown talent worthy of international cricket.

Ireland should look at the kiwi model, similar size population, major sport something else but yet they produced a decent cricket team and at times some truly great players

True, smart of us to get the weak asian sides over this summer to prepare for 2017 :yk

They are, even have a NZ'er in charge of the senior side

Good news for them, ECB should organise matches for them to play England before England play a LOI series against another test playing nation.

We really are fortunate to have arguably one of the best managed boards in the world. Go to 25:30 and listen to Deutrom on the transformation since 2006, 10 short years. Its actually incredible.

If we can get fixtures for our A and U19 sides, and add just a bit more depth to the inter pros well, every step that needs to be in place would be in place IMO.

Other thing not mentioned is, Cricket Ireland have (I think Cricket Scotland are part of this venture too) plans to develop a ground in Spain for use during our rainy season and to acclimatize our players to warm conditions. Even id this never develops beyond a pipe dream its great to see such ambition.

What's the number of people playing Cricket these days in Ireland?

Did I not tell you the ICC restructuring as it ended up needed to be given a chance. So what if teams like Italy lose money...they would never make it anyways. Focus on Associates who have real futures like Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland, Nepal, maybe the Netherlands.

Now lets see what happens with Richardson's alleged plans to restrict Test cricket to the top 7 nations only.

Ireland's future depends on how they play SL and Pak this summer. If they get steam rolled, Irish cricket will take a back seat. I don't see the Irish getting steam rolled though.

4th side to be added to the domestic competition next year too, and as well as this in an effort to ease fixture congestion some Interpro games will be played in a CI facility based in Spain of all places starting next year, rain may not be an issue for us much longer.

To top it off an ICC inspection team will watch one of the 3 day games to determine if it the competition be granted first class status. I'm not used to this positivity!!

Aim to play tests? I wonder why Cricket Ireland want to play the format that is dying even in the Cricket crazy Sub-continent.

They should rather aspire to be like Bangladesh with a strong Odi and T20 team that is enough to boost the profile of the sport in the country and keep the fans entertained.

May be they do not want to play test. They want the prestige, status and power in the icc....

Maybe they do want to play tests.

Culturally the biggest influence on Irish cricket would be England where tests are easily number 1.

Correct. Many of the older generation would have spent their summer holidays as kids tuning into the test matches on the BBC as there was little else to do, Youd be surprised how many people actually did this, even if they didnt like cricket. My own late grandmother was a test match fanatic by all accounts, and she grew up in about as rural an upbringing as you can get.

CRICKET IRELAND TO BUILD PERFORMANCE CENTRE

CRICKET IRELAND have unveiled ambitious plans for the first dedicated outdoor training complex in Ireland, giving top performers of both sexes and all ages the best facilities to help develop their skills on the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus (SINSC).

The Cricket Ireland Performance Centre will be built at the Sport Ireland site at Blanchardstown in Dublin, and feature 14 grass nets, five artificial pull-out bays, a 90m outfield, plus seating and storage areas.

The €600,000 development has been made possible thanks to support from the International Cricket Council, Denis O'Brien, the Irish Government and Sport Ireland.

“The development of Cricket Ireland’s first-ever dedicated outdoor training centre is a huge step forward for Irish cricket," said Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom.

"For the first time, our performance squads – male and female, senior and junior, national, provincial and academy – will be able to train on a day-to-day basis in a state-of-the-art facility controlled by Cricket Ireland.

"We are grateful to the Government and Sport Ireland for providing us with the land, and to the ICC which is clearly increasing its support for Ireland’s aspirations – by granting first-class status to our Hanley Energy Inter-provincial competition; through our elevation to the 12-team ODI structure; and by granting an additional $500k in 2016 and 2017 to help us afford the matches.

“I would also like to extend our particular gratitude to Denis O’Brien, who continues to play a vital, yet unheralded role, in the growth of Irish cricket.

"For the last 10 years Denis has always been ready to answer our call – from supporting our team in the Caribbean World Cup in 2007 and then our first cohort of contracted players, to helping us stage our major matches and, now, helping us build our first outdoor performance centre.

"He has played a central role in helping us punch above our weight on the world stage and, for this, we are enormously grateful.”

Sport Ireland Chief Executive, John Treacy welcomed the new development saying: “Sport Ireland is delighted to add cricket to the growing list of sports with a presence on the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus.

"Through its performances both on and off the field in the last number of years, Cricket Ireland has shown that cricket has become a sport of national significance.

"Earlier this year Cricket Ireland launched an ambitious strategic plan which aims to make cricket mainstream, and the development of these world class training facilities at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus will assist this objective as the sport continues to grow.”

Cricket Ireland Performance Director Richard Holdsworth explained the rationale behind the new development: "There is a pressing requirement for such a facility to be built to service our increasing number of performance teams, as we found existing clubs are already overstretched in terms of hosting Cricket Ireland activity due to the impressive growth in participation figures in recent years.

"It will also provide training for touring overseas high performance teams who often request facilities prior to series against us - 2017 will see New Zealand, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and West Indies visiting Ireland," added Holdsworth.

"We have found that access to high-quality outdoor facilities has been a consistent theme emerging from the last two post-World Cup reviews. We have previously announced warm-weather outdoor plans for the La Manga Club Development (which is almost complete) and this home-based facility will augment that perfectly. We already have four ODI-accredited facilities in Ireland, but no quality outdoor training facilities so this will remedy that."

On basing the facility at the SINSC, Holdsworth felt that it was a natural fit given the unique benefits that the location would offer Irish cricket.

"The SINSC is ‘owned’ by sport so guarantees access and maintenance, whereas by contrast, gaining access to club grounds is dependent upon the availability of volunteer personnel and facilities prepared to suitable standards. The establishment on the campus will enable cross-pollination with other high-performance sports, and of course the centre is to be located adjacent to the state-of-the-art Sport Ireland Institute offering close access to their programmes.

"The SINSC is now recognised as a world-leader in ‘hot-housing’ performance sport, and includes high performance gyms and testing facilities to which our players will would have access."

Work on the new facility is expected to start subject to the necessary planning permissions in early 2017 with the artificial area being completed ahead of the season, with the grass nets operational in 2018

Ceremony available here for those curious.

Does the Irish team have much of a following in terms of Tv audience?

Couldn't tell you. Our ODI's this year vs SL and Pakistan were broadcast on free to air tv for the first time ever so can only assume there's some audience there. But obviously its dwarfed in comparison to football/rugby

The true question is, is the popularity increasing or just stagnant?
