Police in Bangladesh are looking for cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife in relation to the alleged abuse of their 11-year-old domestic help.

The girl is now in hospital after she was found in the streets, while the police have registered a case against the 29-year-old fast bowler.

Shahadat became the first Bangladeshi to be added to the Lord's Honours Board after taking five wickets against England at the ground in 2010.

He has played 38 Tests and 51 ODIs.

Shahadat last featured for the Tigers in the second Test against Pakistan in May, during which he twisted his right knee and was ruled him out action for six months.

Along with being one of the most annoying bowlers ever he is a disgraceful human too.

While this case does seem straightforward, we should reserve judgement before we truly know the details and what actually happened vs what's being portrayed.

Why would anyone that famous need to hire an 11 year old for domestic help? Is that normal over there?

If guilty, I hope him and his wife a given a severe punishment by the court.

There were two very high-profile child abuse/murder cases in Bangladesh recently and many celebrities spoke out against the mistreatment of children including many of the Bangladesh players and this idiot goes ahead and does this. Public sentiment against child abuse is very high right now. He is screwed.

oh dear I ll reserve judgment but this doesnt look good

Claims the child fell, but those bruises/injuries don't seem like something that would happen from a fall.

There was that Indian guy who worked against child abuse, he got latched onto the nobel prize with Malala to try and raise the profile, but sadly we never heard much more about him before or after the event. I can't even remember his name.

This was on TIME Magazine Official website so embarrassment for Bangladesh on high scale players like him and Rubel should be banned for a least couple of years

Shahadat Hossain on the run as police step up chase

DHAKA: Bangladesh police stepped up their hunt on Monday for national cricketer Shahadat Hossain who went into hiding over claims he and his wife beat their 11-year-old maid, an officer said.

The 29-year-old paceman was suspended from all forms of cricket on Sunday as police investigate allegations he “tortured and abused” the maid who is undergoing treatment in hospital.

A police officer investigating the case said Hossain's mobile phone is now being tracked and officers are hopeful of arresting him soon. “We've mobilised ten mobile teams (of officers) to arrest him. We're making raids almost everyday and are now tracking mobile phones,” inspector Shafiqur Rahman told AFP.

A case has been filed against Hossain who could face charges of child repression and employing a minor.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) suspended Hossain from all forms of cricket until the case is resolved, effectively ruling him out of next month's two home Tests against Australia.

Hossain, who played 38 Tests and 51 one-day internationals for Bangladesh, missed the recent series against India and South Africa after twisting his ankle in a Test match in May.

Hossain and his wife Nritto Shahadat have been on the run since police raided their house on the night of September 6 after officers found the injured and crying maid on a street in Dhaka.

The maid, Mahfuza Akter Happy, has told police and local media that the couple beat her. Television footage showed the girl, looking frail and thin, being taken to hospital with swollen black eyes.

“She told us that the couple beat her very often. Her hand was charred with a hot cooking paddle. She had injury marks all over her body,” Rahman has said.

A team of doctors is treating the girl at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Guys lets wait for him to be proven guilty before we sentence him please

It shouldn't be so hard to find him. The guy is 6'4 in a country full of short people.

The fact that he is "hiding" and the police have to look for him makes me believe he actually is guilty.

Cricketer Shahadat Hossain sent to jail after surrender in court

Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain has been sent to prison after he surrendered before a Dhaka court on Monday, a day after police arrested his wife.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Yousuf Hossain rejected his bail petition filed after his surrender.

Hossain and his wife had been absconding since a case was registered against them last month under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

The couple is accused of torturing their minor housemaid.

Early on Sunday, police arrested the cricketer's wife Jesmin Jahan from her father’s house at Dhaka’s Malibagh.

She was produced before a court, where the police sought remand to question her.

The court denied police her custody and sent Jahan to jail.

Hossain filed a police complaint on Sep 6 claiming his housemaid had gone missing.

But several hours later, the 11-year-old girl surfaced to accuse the cricketer and his wife of regular torture.

Police said one Khandkar Mozzamel Haque found the girl at Mirpur and took her to the local police.

Haque later filed the case.

Hossain last played for Bangladesh in May against Pakistan.

He went off the field on the first day of first Test with a leg injury.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) got him treated in Australia and he was undergoing a rehabilitation programme.

The BCB had said that the reports of torturing a minor was ‘utterly embarrassing’ and banned the pacer from all forms of cricket until the charges were settled.

that was pretty funny considering that he was awarded the nobel prize so that it is nt just handed to a Pakistani only.

Kalash.. something was his name i think

Good.

Police in Bangladesh have charged the cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife with torturing their former domestic servant, an 11-year-old girl.

If found guilty, the couple may face lengthy jail terms. They are currently on bail and deny charges of employing and assaulting a minor.

The police charge sheet submitted to the court in Dhaka accuses the couple of physically torturing the child.

Bangladesh's Cricket Board has already suspended the medium-fast bowler.

The case is to be heard on 12 January.

The girl, Mahfuza Akhter Happy, was found in a street in September with multiple injuries, including a broken leg.

At the time, she said she had been working for the couple for a year.

The charges have been brought under legislation designed to protect women and children from domestic abuse.

If convicted, the cricketer and his wife, Jasmine Jahan Nritto Shahadat, could face jail terms of between seven and 14 years, plus a fine.

Bangladesh's Shahadat Hossain Faces 14-Year Jail Term For Assaulting Child Maid

Bangladesh police have charged national cricketer Shahadat Hossain with assaulting an 11-year-old girl he employed illegally as a maid.

Police said Hossain, who has played 38 Tests for Bangladesh, and his wife Nritto Shahadat were formally charged on Tuesday with assault and torture. Hossain and his wife face up to 14 years in jail if they are convicted.

"The allegations against Shahadat and his wife were proved in our primary investigations," police Inspector Shafiqur Rahman told AFP.

The 29-year-old cricketer, who denies any wrongdoing, was suspended from all forms of the game on September 13 over the allegations.

He and his wife went into hiding after police raided their house in September following a complaint from the young girl.

Police said one of her hands had been burnt with a hot cooking paddle, while other injury marks were also found on her body. Television footage showed her looking frail and thin with swollen black eyes.
Hossain, who has also played 51 one-day internationals for Bangladesh, handed himself in to police in October after his wife was arrested.

On Wednesday he told AFP the allegations were "false" and had ruined his career.

"I am innocent. Everyone who knows me will testify to that," he said, in his first interview since his arrest in October.

Hossain said the allegations were part of a conspiracy to destroy his career.

"A man's dignity relies on his professional career. It seems to me that mine is being ruined," he said.

If found guilty should be punished without any leniency. He went into hiding after the crime and now saying he is innocent.

People like him who abuse innocent children's should be given exemplary punishment regardless of their service to nation.

Young kids working is a reality in the subcontinent, but I can never imagine someone hurting them. Sad story.

I am just wondering why. Surely a celebrity can afford to pay an adult to do the same job? Or at least a teenager if it is work like child minding.

A lot of the times, rich people keep them as family servants for decades. They get them young because it helps raise them more loyal and loving towards the family.

Why would he go into the hiding if he was innocent all along?

Shahadat Hossain, who was suspended from cricket after he was charged with torturing an 11-year-old girl he employed as a maid, apologised on Thursday (April 28) and asked to be allowed to return to the game.

Hossain, the Bangladesh pacer, who has in the past denied abusing the girl, apologised for what he called his “misdeed”.

“I regret the unwarranted incident I was involved in and apologise to the whole nation,” he said in a statement in Bengali.

“For the sake of cricket and my livelihood, I want to return to cricket. I appeal to the nation, the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board), to allow me to return to cricket and correct my mistake. I apologise for my misdeed,” he said.

Hossain, 29, played 38 Tests and 51 One-Day Internationals before he was suspended from all forms of the game.

In December, Bangladeshi police charged him and his wife, Nritto Shahadat, with assault and torture a few months after the young girl was found crying on a roadside, her eyes bruised and swollen. The couple had gone into hiding after police raided their house in September when the girl alleged they had beaten and tortured her. Television footage had showed her looking frail and thin and police said one of her hands had been burnt with a hot cooking implement.

Hossain spent two months in custody after he turned himself in to police on October 5 and has since been released on bail, as has his wife.

A judge has ordered that the couple face trial. If convicted they face up to 14 years in jail. However, a source said the couple and the girl’s family may come to a financial settlement that would see her withdraw the allegations.

Shahadat told AFP in an interview in December that the allegations were false and had ruined his career.

Pathetic really. Worse than fixing. No child, let alone human, deserves to be shamed like that at the hands of anyone be it a cricketer or janitor.

Pathetic individual how can you torture anyone let alone a helpless child unbelievable.

His return is mater of BCB and their law so I dont care...I will always boo him.

This is good from Bangaldesh Legal system that no special preference is given to anyone specially in such a heinous crime. I hope he is jailed for 14 years along with his wife .

i know this image is graphic but people need to see it.

http://greenwatchbd.com/wp-content/...38-06-bangladesh-maid-split-overlay-tease.jpg

is it possible to execute him and his wife under the current bangladeshi law? i'm just worried that they will bribe somebody in bangladeshi judicial system get away with a minor sentence.
I don't think capital punishment can be given in such a case under any law in most countries but they should be jailed for 14 years atleast as per the law I think.

Hopefully a decent length prison stint awaits him

Shahadat Hossain’s temporary suspension withdrawn

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has withdrawn the temporary suspension on cricketer Kazi Shahadat Hossain on humanitarian grounds. In September 2015 the pace bowler was banned from participating in activities under the Board’s jurisdiction including playing in competitions after he became a subject of investigation for alleged criminal offences.

BCB CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said: “The BCB’s disciplinary committee has taken the decision to withdraw the playing ban on Shahadat from humanitarian considerations following an appeal by the player. The ruling, effective from today, is applicable for participation in domestic cricket only. He however, will not be considered for national team selection until his legal issues are settled.”

Was disgusted when I heard about this if found guilty hopefully he is punished severely

In the news for the wrong reasons again...

Pacer Shahadat creates another controversy beating his own teammate

The aggressive mentality of Bangladesh pacer Shahadat Hossain out of the field is nothing new. The paceman had been the headline of the news for a number of negative reasons previously. Shahadat Hossain, the bad boy of Bangladesh Cricket, had been criticized much for doing such things before.

This time, the Dhaka Division cricketer had been in talks after beating his teammate during the National Cricket League (NCL) match. The sixth and final round of the National League began on Sunday, November 17. Dhaka division faced Khulna Division in the first level match at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna.

During the second day of the match, Shahadat Hossain started firing when he failed to control his anger against teammate Mohammad Arafat. In the first innings, Khulna Division were batting in reply to Dhaka Division’s 279 runs. Pacer Shahadat instructed Arafat to rub a certain part of the ball. Arafat did not agree and Shahadat also didn’t able to control his anger.

The 33-year old pacer put his hands on Arafat in the field. The match referee Akhtar Ahmed had already mentioned the matter in his report to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). And it is evident that he’s going to get a big punishment from BCB.

Earlier, in 2015, Shahadat and his wife had been jailed for torture on domestic workers. Even after that incident, humble behavior did not come to him. He was trying to get his hands on a CNG driver at Asad Gate in the capital last year is not an old story either.

Pacer Shahadat banned for five years

Bangladesh paceman Shahadat Hossain has been banned from all formats of cricket for five years, with two years of that sentence suspended, for assaulting his teammate during a domestic league match.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) also fined Shahadat Tk 100,000, said Minhajul Abedin Nannu, chief selector of BCB after a meeting of the board's technical committee.

However, the former Bangladesh national cricketer, 33, can challenge the BCB’s decision by opening an appeal by 26 November, he added.

"We've decided about him after receiving a report from the National Cricket League (NCL) authorities. His action caused to a level 4 offence as per the BCB code of conduct," added Minhajul.

Shahadat reportedly assaulted teammate Arafat Sunny junior during an NCL match last Sunday. He played 38 Test matches and 51 ODIs for Bangladesh. He last appeared in 2013.

Earlier in 2015, Shahadat was arrested was temporarily suspended from the national team for his alleged involvement in assaulting his minor domestic help. He later acquitted of the offence.

National discard Shahadat Hossain, who was banned for five years with two of those suspended for assaulting a teammate during a domestic game in 2019, was allowed to participate in the ongoing Dhaka Premier Division T20 League (DPDL) considering his family crisis, informed BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Akram Khan today.

Shahadat today featured for Partex Sporting Club in their DPDL encounter against Old DOHS Sports Club at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. The 34-year-old pacer remained wicketless, conceding 16 in his two overs, in a game where his side were thrashed by 10 wickets by Old DOHS.

For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel.
"He had talked with me regarding lifting his ban earlier [in February this year]. His mother has been diagnosed with cancer. And hence, considering his family problems, we decided to lift his ban and let him play," said Akram to The Daily Star today.

Shahadat, while playing for Dhaka Division in the National Cricket League (NCL), failed to keep his emotions in control and ended up slapping Arafat Sunny Junior after the latter had refused to shine the ball during their side's encounter against Khulna Division in November, 2019.

The 34-year-old, who played 38 Tests, 51 ODIs and 6 T20Is for the national side, was also levied a 3 lakh Taka fine for his behaviour.
