Cricketers dying due to tragic on-field incidents

Peshawar Zalmi announces support for Zubair Ahmed's family

Peshawar Zalmi on Thursday announced its support for the family of Zubair Ahmed Mohmend, the aspiring cricketer who lost his life on August 14 after being struck by a ball twice while practising in nets at the Sir Nazim Cricket Academy, Mardan.

Peshawar Zalmi's owner Javed Afridi announced that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise would bear all expense pertaining to Zubair's younger brother Uzair’s cricket training and will help the young boy fulfill his elder brother’s dreams of pursuing a career in cricket.

The Zalmi management, while expressing sorrow on Zubair's untimely death, also announced that Uzair will travel with Peshawar Zalmi for the third season of PSL.

Zubair, a passionate cricketer from Katlang area of Mardan, was a student of intermediate and a regular visitor to Sir Nazim Cricket Academy, where he used to spend time doing training and net practice.

A brother to five sisters and two brothers, Zubair was working hard to become a shining star of cricket, said Academy Coach Bakht Mohammad.

“It was an off day in the academy due to 14th August. We had organised a ceremony to celebrate Independence Day at the academy where world-acclaimed cricketer Fakhar Zaman was invited," Mohammad had recalled.

He maintained that the staffers had asked Zubair not to play on an off day but the young cricket fan insisted to play in nets with other players and went inside.

Mohammad said that Ahmed was struck by a ball twice. “First the ball hit him near his ear and then the second ball hit near his neck due to which he collapsed,” he had said, adding that subsequently Ahmed was rushed to a hospital at Katlang where the doctors referred him to Mardan's hospital.

"Ahmed breathed his last on his way to Mardan," he had said.

The coach had said that the deceased cricketer was wearing all safety gears including helmet while he was practising.

The Pakistan Cricket Board took to Twitter to express grief and emphasise the importance of protective gears.

"(The) tragic death of Zubair Ahmed is another reminder that safety gear i.e. helmet must be worn at all times. Our sympathies with Zubair's family," reads a tweet by the PCB.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon. Very sad:(

RIP. Even if he was wearing a helmet some cheap helmets aren't durable as the expensive ones.

This is a bit horrible. No reports on whether he was wearing one, [and that didn't help Hughes did it?] and even if he wasn't?

What kind of judgment is that? The poor boy's dead.

Thank you. It's just a sad situation, and no one needs to judge anyone in this tragedy.

This is beautiful. Say whatever you want about marketing or whatever but the effect this gesture would have on this family would be really good. Well done Javed.

Bring Back Smiles, Uzair Ahmed (brother of late Zubair Ahmed) to represent Paris Zalmi in the Global Zalmi League

Talented Cricketer Zubair Ahmed lost his life in a tragic accident while playing cricket in Mardan last year. The incident was not only devastating for his family, but also for cricket fans across the globe. As promised last year, Uzair Ahmed (younger brother of Zubair Ahmed) will be a part of the Global Zalmi League and will represent Paris Zalmi. Chairman PZ Javed Afridi stated that the loss of Zubair Ahmed can never be filled but we really want to help Zubair's family so Uzair will carry on the dreams of his late brother.

Uzair will also attend practice sessions with Peshawar Zalmi and learn from world class players like Daren Sammy, Hafeez, Wahab Riaz and many others in the PZ team. We wish Uzair all the best for the #GlobalZalmiLeague.

Last year, Uzair and his father were invited as special guests of Peshawar Zalmi during the PSL 3 Drafts held in Lahore.

Horrible news. May he Rest In Peace.

This part of the Dawn article quoted above struck me. No disrespect to anyone, and I wasn't there, but perhaps there needed to be some procedures in place?

Indian-origin club cricketer dies in on-field tragedy

An Indian-original cricketer, Hareesh Gangadharan, died on the filed while playing a local club cricket match in Dunedin on Saturday. Gangadharan, aged 33, while fielding for Green Island Cricket Club, apparently suffered a medical event.

After bowling two overs, Gangadharan complaining of lack of breath, and eventually collapsed mid pitch at the Sunnyvale Sports Centre, and could not be revived despite efforts of his fellow cricketers, spectators and emergency services. He is survived by wife Nisha Hareesh and their three-year-old daughter Gowri.

Club president John Moyle expressed grief following the tragic incident through a statement.

“I am heartbroken to confirm the news of the very sudden death of our Green Island Cricket Club member while playing yesterday at Sunnyvale,” he said. “Hareesh Gangadharan suffered a medical event and despite all efforts by teammates, the public and emergency services he could not be saved.”

Shocked by the death, as per statements from his teammates, Gangadharan was a fit and healthy man who used to open the batting and bowling for the team. He had been playing for Green Islands – established in 1930 – for over six seasons. Originally from Kochi, Kerala, Gangadharan came to New Zealand five years ago to marry his wife.

Fellow cricketers described Gangadharan as a wonderful allrounder. Teammate Cyrus Barnabas said Hareesh had three wishes for the team ahead of the game on Saturday: to score 250, bat their 50 overs, and for a player to score a hundred. Batting first against Albion, the team had achieved all three goals, while Barnabas himself scoring a hundred, supported at the end of his innings by Hareesh who ended on about 30 not out.

As per reports, Gangadharan’s body will be released to the family on Monday or Tuesday before being repatriated to India.
