CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today announced the appointment of Amol Muzumdar as interim batting coach of the Standard Bank Proteas for next month’s three-match Test series against India.

The Test series is the Proteas first engagement in the new ICC Test Match Championship.

Muzumdar had an outstanding first-class career that lasted 20 years during which time he made more than 11 000 first-class runs, including 30 centuries, at an average of 48. This included a career-best 260 on his first-class debut for Mumbai.

He has moved on to become one of the top coaches in India, holding high performance coaching certificates from the BCCI, Cricket Australia as well as in the UK through both Lancashire and Yorkshire.

His previous coaching appointment have included being the batting coach of Rajasthan Royals at the IPL, coaching the India under-19 and under-23 sides at the National Cricket Academy and being batting coach of the Netherlands national side.

“Amol is a perfect fit for us,” commented CSA Acting Director of Cricket Corrie van Zyl. “He brings an intimate knowledge of Indian playing conditions and the challenges our batsmen are likely to face. He also assisted us at the spin bowling camp we held recently in India and thus has already built up a good working relationship with Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Zubayr Hamza.”

“Cricket has always been and will continue to be my calling,” commented Muzumdar. “Having spent 25 years on the pitch as a player I intend to spend the next 25 tapping and grooming talent on the cricket field.

“I am very excited about this new chapter to my coaching career.”

Interim coach. That's smart. Don't know why more international teams don't do that leading up to a big away tour.

Indians usually work in India as there is a huge infrastructure to absorb them. Plus most teams cant afford the top of the pile Indian coaches.

For eg.

Dravid makes $1mn as NCA head coach. How many teams will be able to pay that?
Dravid is a big name. Why does someone like Lalchand Rajput or Praveen Amre not get contacted for the national teams of South Africa, New Zealand, England or Australia? Coaching the national team of major Test playing nations is a big plus on your resume compared to coaching domestic, U19/'A' level or even IPL teams.

Now this is what's called professional approach towards coaching unlike Misbah after having done a third class 2nd level coaching course from PCB claims to be

Chief Coach of international team
Chief selector of international team
Batting coach
Chief coach of PSL team

What a pity! Our whole nation lacks fairness and professional approach. Before accepting this huge responsibility Misbah should have looked inwards.
With little bit of soul searching he would have accepted a coaching role for one of the provincial teams near for one season.

Amre is with Delhi Capitals team. Rajput has coached various teams, including MI.now he is with Zim team.

The salary at IPL teams is really high. Few national teams can match it. The ones that can match it will want a big name like Dravid, again he will be out of their means.

At $1 million Dravid is out of everyone's means, international or T20 leagues. Only BCCI can afford. The next best pay for an international coach (after Shastri's $1 million) is I think $500k, paid by CA.

Dravid is a very good coach. But Langer is equally good. And so are a few others who will cost a lot less than $1mn and are better or equally good. So there is that too.

Rajput, Amre etc. are not head coaches of those IPL teams. They're not making crores. Guys like Bob Woolmer, Duncan Fletcher, Dav Whatmore, Trevor Bayliss, Micky Arthur, Tom Moody, Mike Hesson and many more have become head coaches of various international teams despite not being big name players. Not sure why you think everyone wants guys like Dravid. Only BCCI and maybe Australia to some extent are going for big name players as head coaches. Look at all other countries and they're going for accomplished coaches.

The truth is guys like Rajput, Amre, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Robin Singh, Mithun Manhas etc. will never be taken seriously as a contender for the position of head coach of India until they become head coach of another major international team. You have to be kidding yourself if you think the head coach of New Zealand or South Africa makes significantly less money than the batting coach of an IPL team.

Must be a few of these former batsmen in the market - Pakistan need to look carefully and not take a hasty decision

Sir you have no idea how high the salary for these coaches are in IPL. It rivals the salary of most head coaches.

The highest salary outside BCCI is Langer at $500k.

Rest are all lower. And are near to $100 or 200k. ECB may be an exception.

To be head coach at Bcci one has to be really high profile. Except Duncan Fletcher rest all head coaches have played substantial number of tests.

Misbah is a batsman. Why appoint a batting coach in addition to him?

No decision has been made yet but it's completely understandable if they do end up hiring a batting coach. Misbah has a lot on his plate already. The decision of whether he wants a batting coach is completely up to him, though.

Gary Kirsten and Lasith Malinga were reportedly getting Rs. 1.5 crores or about $211,260 as batting coach of RCB and bowling coach of MI respectively. Micky Arthur was making $220,000 as the head coach of Pakistan. Other teams like New Zealand, South Africa, England, Australia are more. Even the head coach of Sri Lanka made $40,000 per month. Amre, Rajput etc. are not going to be making as much as Gary Kirsten. They stand to make much more if they ever coach a major international side. Plus, that's a bigger boost to their resume than being a specialist coach of an IPL team. Forget India, even IPL teams would pay more to an Indian coach who was the head coach of Sri Lanka, New Zealand or South Africa.

Mohammad Yousuf would make a good batting coach for Pakistan, but highly unlikely PCB will want him.

Ashish Nehra got 4cr and Sehwag 3cr in IPL.

And you are counting salary of 6 weeks and comparing with what a coach of a international team got over a year.

SL coach who got $40k per month was sacked after his fees was considered too high.

The highest any coach gets is $550k for Langer for a whole year.

Here a IPL coach gets $200k for 6 weeks of work.

FYI Amre was in the managing committee of Mumbai Cricket Association. He left that kind of a position to take up the DC job.
