England at home will be a formidable force to be reckoned with, but can they go all the way and win the trophy on their home soil?

Four years ago a disappointed England were beaten finalists to a rampant Indian team at Edgbaston. However in these past four years a lot has changed in England's approach to One-Day cricket and a lot has changed regarding their brand of cricket in the 50 over format. Make no mistake, this time around they will be keen to go one better on Sunday 18th June at The Oval in front of a home crowd.

Looking through the England squad the first thing that strikes you is match-winners in abundance, Jason Roy, Moeen Ali, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes are all more than capable of turning a match in the space of a few overs. The squad has an air of athleticism about it and it's a squad that has bowlers who have the ability to take wickets. The combination of youth and experience is an intriguing one and should work well for Eoin Morgan and his men.

The top order has a feel of destruction about it, as Pakistan discovered at Trent Bridge last year when many records were broken against the hapless and shell-shocked Pakistani bowlers. The England batting line-up is long, very long and has players who can clear the boundary with ease and attack any bowling line-up with ferocity. It's a batting line-up that oozes talent and class and has an aggressive attitude and approach. Destructive batsmen at the top, classy players like Root and Morgan in the middle-order and a fired-up Stokes also at their disposal. Add to this lower-order batsmen who are more than capable of some late-order fireworks and you have a complete batting line-up for the 50 over format.

The England bowling group also has an attacking feel to it. In the past England has been guilty of selecting defensive medium-pacers to contain the opposition, but this time around in Wood, Plunkett, Willey and Woakes they have pace to burn and all of these seamers are wicket-taking options. The pace attack on paper is as good as any in the Champions Trophy and could blow away even the best batting group at the tournament. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are there as the spin-bowling options as back-up to an exciting pace-bowling battery and both are more than useful options as spinners.

This group of players will be amongst the best when it comes to athleticism, fitness and fielding. Expect plenty of spectacular catches from England and they will make the opposition work for every run. Whilst some teams struggle with fitness, there is no compromising on levels of fitness for England and their professionalism will be second to none.

Overall the squad has an exciting and youthful feel about it with only 2 squad members over the age of 30 and with most of the squad between the age of 25 and 28, peak ages for cricketers as many would feel. The players are good enough, the squad is a strong one, the approach is exciting and the team is a settled one with a clear game plan. Morgan has the players at his disposal but his captaincy will be tested in the toughest encounters and he will need to pass this test for England to succeed.

Home advantage could be crucial with the crowds getting behind an exciting England team whose brand of cricket of late has been sensational. If all goes to plan then England could lift the Champions Trophy 2017 and appease their demanding fans. But with England, it quite often goes horribly wrong when you least expect it. Expect England to perform well at the Champions Trophy this time around and don't be surprised if they go all the way and win it.

Strengths

Fielding, fitness and explosive batting.

Weaknesses

May crumble under pressure.

Verdict

Will make the final and could win it.

England squad for Champions Trophy

Eoin Morgan (C), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Jake Ball, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

They start out as favourites for the title. They're in some great form and have some outstanding players.

Backing them to win this tournament - good preview from Saj!

They should have won it last time round but choked badly. Saffers are known as chokers but England could have this tag along with them. Stokes choked against WI in the W20 recently.

England have the best bating line up and the best variety in the bowling attack. I think they could get over over the line this time. Good luck England. :wg

There bowling is probably there weakness but they are an extremely strong batting line up.

Going for an England vs Australia final.

There approach of playing all rounders right till end , may win a few games , but will eventually will back fire.

Easily the best batting unit in the ODI game at the moment. Only the weight of expectations can stop this team from going all the way.

Would be the champions elect if the bowling was stronger.

Batting wise they have an incredible amount of depth with every player capable of consistent strike rotation and hitting regular boundaries.

To be honest the fact that the bowlers can bat is more consequential than intentional. Moeen and Stokes are the 'genuine all rounders' but then all teams have some kind of all rounder as their 5th/6th bowling options. Woakes, Plunkett, Wood and Rashid (which I'm starting to think will be the options with Willey narrowly missing out) then all get in as the bowlers who just happen to all be handy with the bat.

Can see India and SA as the favorites to make the semis from group B but pressure makes SA and Pakistan do funny things, so could be any of the two. Sri Lanka probably the weakest of the 8 teams.

From Group A, I don't think there are two clear favorites. Since there are only three matches, all matches will be pressure matches - unlike WC2015. I do expect Australia to make it to semis but then, among NZ and England, it will be about who performs better under pressure - just 1 bad day can ruin it in this brutal tournament. Won't be surprised if Bangladesh gets a win too and that decides the fate of the losing team, BD is a good ODI unit now.

Love the CT format, never a dull moment, wish matches are as interesting as they were in last year's T20WC and that means less flat pitches.

1) Hales
2) Roy
3) Root
4) Morgan
5) Buttler
6) Stokes
7) Moeen
8) Woakes
9) Willey
10) Rashid
11) Ball

One of the strongest teams in the tournament and the best batting lineup by far. Their #10 would be a #8 in most other sides and batted at #7 against Ireland recently. Plus, they have Bairstow on the bench. The bowling doesn't have much venom but its quite capable of defending 300 consistently.

Wood or Plunkett will definitely be in over Ball with the other quite possibly in for Willey I expect.

Most explosive batting lineup but haven't truly been tested by a quality bowling attack yet. As we saw in India, batting firepower alone is not enough to win you games.

Solid team with home advantage.

Hardly any flaws.

The only team I think that will give them fits is AUS because that team loves showing up in ICC tournaments. Plus, PAK is always there too. :yk

Their batting line up is brilliant to make scores of 350-400 on batting tracks.
But I feel it will be tested against good bowling attacks and fielding sides like Australia.
I also find their bowling a little weak.

On paper, 2nd best side after Australia.

One thing that goes In their favor, they have the biggest match winner of the tournament In their side: Ben Stokes!

Weak lower order is probably the last thing that describes this England side.

I dont know why but somehow i dont get confidence with their death hitting ability and reliability.
but yeah i forgot Willey. If he plays than it will strengthen their lower order.

bowling can get a phainty on its day

Very strong batting lineup but their bowling is definitely on the thin side

Jason Roy, Joe Root, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes failed today.

Still scored 339.

On a good day, they can score 380.

On a middling day like today, with quite a few main batsmen failing, they can still get to 350.

Unbelievable batting lineup.

bowling can get a phainty on its day

There are no standout bowlers, but they have a very varied attack with a lot of options. Pace, swing, seam, off-spin, leg-spin etc. One or two eventually pull through, even if others have a bad day. They will win most matches if they can keep the opposition to around 320.

bowling can get a phainty on its day

This can be said of any bowling attack at the Champions Trophy especially if the wickets are good and the weather fine.

On paper, an India versus England final.......

They don't have any power-hitting hacks that we're looking for. Just faced batsmen from 1-9 that rely on conventional cricketing shots. While SA's C grade "power-hitters," Miller and Morris, flopped as expected. Moeen's knock today is an example for the clueless lot here.

They have an amazing top-middle order and bench strength (Bairstow, Billings on bench) but I still think their no 7 to no 11 aren't that special. Moeen , Woakes, Plunket, Rashid, and Wood dont give me much confidence.

Anyways they will still score 350 and win matches :(

Ben Stokes faces further assessment on his knee after being injured in the opening one-day international against South Africa on Wednesday.

Stokes left the field during the 72-run win at Headingley and captain Eoin Morgan said he would have been able to bowl had he been needed.

The Durham all-rounder's left knee will be checked out in Southampton on Thursday evening where England's players will gather for the second game in the series on Saturday.

A further update on Stokes' availability for the clash at the Ageas Bowl is expected on Friday.

Speaking after the game, Morgan said: "I don't know the latest on Stokes. But there's no significant swelling to the knee or anything.

"He came back onto the field and was able to bowl, we just didn't need him. Given the stage we got to, I didn't want to risk him. Hopefully, a couple more days with ice on it will do him some good.

"We want to win every game, and so if all our players are fit, we'll put out our strongest team in every game.

"We might look at things ahead of Lord's on Monday, given that there's only one day of travel between the Ageas Bowl and there - maybe a couple of bowlers might need changing.

"But if the guys are fit and raring to go, we want to win as many games as we can."

Not realistic but I'd replace Root with Bairstow. He's only slowing this team down. Their depth is such that they don't need an anchor which Bairstow is perfectly capable of anyway.

Just seem to have a never-say-die-attitude which is not going to help other teams

Terrifying batting order, best of CT.Bowling is ok but not that threatening.Overall, the most favorite team to win this CT.

Lol, this batting lineup is insane. Still needs to be tested on a tough batting pitch but even if they score 25-35 runs each from #1 to #10 (which they are quite capable of doing), that's another score of around 300.

They did almost lose today but no doubt that England are the best batting side of the Champions Trophy.

I will be surprised if they don't win the CT, they can easily outbat any team in the tournament. Only fear is that, their batting prowess can be brought down to equal footing against good bowling attack like Australia, India.

If history of ICC LOI tournaments is any indication, then England will not win the title. They will finish second best against an inspired team, either in the semifinal or in the final.

Best ODI batting lineup in the world and is miles better than Aus and India's batting lineup too. You've got players in the Eng squad who can bat for a whole 50 overs and score a double ton and then say afterwards that they would like to bat another 50 overs. Goes to show the amount of skill they have to start whacking boundaries from start to finish. Then again a good bowling attack is enough to dismantle England, they're just another team anyways.

They had terrifying batting in 2015 WC too.

Some changes have taken place since then.Bell,Tayor,Ballance,Bopara,Anderson,Broad no longer features in present line up.Guys replacing them have injected more energy to the team.

We saw in the third ODI against South Africa that if the ball swings then the England batting is mortal.

Great performance by England.

They look like such a solid and powerful batting unit.

Will take a very good performance to beat them in this tournament.

They did concede 305 though and that too against Bangladesh. Stronger teams can score 350 Ish against them and restrict them. Unless England bat first always on flat wickets of course. Then they'll win the whole tournament.

Yup they are a strong batting unit, but their bowling is not as strong as one expects, especially with doubts over woakes fitness and even Stokes and Ali's fitness under scanner.

Woakes side strain. Could be a nasty injury that.
