Curious case of Shaheen Shah Afridi’s bowling v Australia

I was looking forward to some swing bowling from him today. He bowled so well in South Afrika and was the only bowler on either side who found some swing and got praise from Holding.

In England he has been a mere shadow of that bowler.

Today he went for 24 runs in his first 2 overs. Bowling too short and LN legs.

But in his last 8 overs he conceeded just 46 runs at 5,75 pr over. That was pretty decent under the circumstances.

So why the hell didn’t he bowl fuller in the first two???

May be he wasn't told where to bowl? I feel like senior bowlers should remind these after each delivery, where to bowl. Reminds me of our bowling partnership in old days when bowlers would stand at mid on and mid off, and every time bowler run to the mark, senior bowler would guide where to bowl. miss such stuff as it's so crucial with younger lot

Exactly. A bowling coach should know the strengths and weaknesses of his bowlers and what can they do. Shaheen at the moment is young and inexperienced and he is trying a lot more things than he should. If only some of these young bowlers had mentors like Imran, Wasim or even Waqar or Shoaib as bowling coaches. An all rounder like Azhar Mehmood who has no coaching achievements as well cant do much with couple of teenagers and newbies.

Shaheen is a humble lad with a great attitude. But I fear he has been badly let down by the PCB which, in turn, is showing in the performances he is producing for Pakistan.

If that's true then it is absolutely disgraceful management by the coaching and management team. I find it hard to believe you would go with an unfit bowler when you have Hasnain or Shadab as options.

It's not even a recent thing. He's been carrying this for a long time now and it's not the sort of thing that just 'heals. He seemed to be completley unsure what is causing it, or indeed how it can be fixed. The only answer given to him by management is physio.

If this is true then it is pretty shocking. A talent of his calibrate deserves proper management man. Someone get him to a specialist.

Shaheen Afridi is Mohammad Sami 2.0.

And I think I preferred Muhammad Sami 1.0 who not only was a better ODI bowler but also a good fielder and not a bad tail ender.

I am thinking this as well. He must have told his coaches he was okay to bowl, now he's making excuses. If you're not fit, don't play. There are other bowlers who can give 100%.

I am thinking this as well. He must have told his coaches he was okay to bowl, now he's making excuses. If you're not fit, don't play. There are other bowlers who can give 100%.

Shaheen came across as completely genuine in our conversation. As I say, he was humble and made no excuses about his bowling. He didn't even say the medical issue was causing his performances to drop. He just told me about it because we had a long conversation about many things, ranging from his roots right the way through to his rise to the national team.

If anything, Shaheen was more than happy to make fun of his own bowling. At one point we were joined by Asif Ali and Shaheen joked how he had been hit for so many runs by Asif in the PSL.

Why the PCB has not dealt with this issue, I have no idea.

My mistake. It was Wahab actually not Shaheen, Finch was dropped in slip off Wahab. If Pakistan held all those simple chances Australia would have scored at least 40 runs less.

Sami wasn't a bad ODI bowler at all. He was just used the wrong way by the management. He wasn't the type to bowl at the death

This is shocking, why dont our bowling coach take this issue to the higher concerns?
