A series South Africa lost and Warner stole the show. If we talk about the best individual performance, it was again Clarke in the third Test. de Villiers was good but he couldn't win his team the series nor was he the standout player.

1st test-91 at centurion..2nd test- he hit century and got support from Duminy and SA won the game.3rd test- he tried hard to save the game and scored 43 of 228 but....!!!

Tbf, Jimmy was the leading wicket taker in the 2010-11 ashes in Australia.

He faced ATG mode Johnson .I don't want to mention but how do you rate Sachin in tests compared to Lara and Ponting?

Yes, you can argue that he was a lone warrior in the first test. However, Duminy got a century too in the first innings and Amla scored one in the second. In the third test, Amla, Faf and even Philander batted just as well as AB did. It was a blockbuster test series and I remember every bit of it.

Lara > Sachin > Ponting

Both Tests and ODIs,

Sachin > Ponting > Lara

Lara was a brilliant ODI batsman in the 90's but average in the 2000's.

Yes. He has played better knocks, such as in Sri Lanka when de Villiers failed. He also played a brilliant innings in Australia along with Smith to win them the series. He's going through a terrible patch at the moment though.

Sri Lanka was a two match series.Funny people are bringing that to discard AB.In Aus series,AB played two brilliant knock- one along with Faf which saved the game and other along with Amla where he showed his aggressive batting skill.Then there was India series at home where AB along with Faf almost chased 458 and Amla failed. Now call it a two match series. What about recent India series..He would have easily played one big knock or century but lacked support..
 
Among the players that haven't retired, only Amla is better than ABD in tests. Cook and YK are below him. In odis, its ABD by a distance followed by Kohli..

Yeah but on the other hand Amla is a player of many good but not many great innings (though he's played the best innings I've seen in person).

How many series has he won with the bat?

His ODI record is good (except when it really counts) but how many innings can anyone really remember.

And he seems to be a mediocre Captain of a declining team. While Clarke got a lot out of a pretty unbalanced and not particularly strong team.

For Clarke I can think of many great parts of his career.
Those two seasons where he averaged about a million, the 5-0 Ashes series, that great hundred he scored in South Africa the game we bowled the Saffers out for something really low and then proceeded to collapse to 9/21 and then get bowled out for 46. Dual world cup winner, including one as Captain.

Amla on the other time doesn't have as many great highlights

I didn't know that however, a lot of Australians I know and follow refer to him as "Clouderson".

Maybe convict will have a different idea - I don't rate Anderson as my potential ATG, feel free to do so.

I think spinners are a bit underrepresented though? Laker from england maybe?

Seeing miandad among the other batsman seems a bit weird though. Not sure if he was in that class.

With spinners, for some reason or another I just can't think of that many.

There are a few that I think are just short like Underwood, Mushtaq, Qadir, Bedi, Gibbs etc and maybe some others but none of them have the same sort of records or aura as the fast bowlers I have listed

To me.

Anderson - very, very good bowler and an English great but like many players eg Laxman or Cook is short of ATG status

It's hard to consider Anderson an ATG when his career has coincided with Dale Steyn
 
You can add Spofforth, Tom Richardson, Ranaji and few others in arguably ATG list

He has many good ones but a good number of great ones as well. Such as his 300* in England, which was a flawless domination of the much vaunted English attack. The 253* in India against one of the country's better bowling attacks and the 196* in Australia which was a counter-attack of amazing quality.

He also has MOTS awards through sheer weight of runs in England, Australia and India.

His ODI record is more than good, it is great when you consider the number of openers in history, that have averaged above 50. Or the fact that he breaks an all-time record every time he scores a century of knock off another 1000 runs in that format. I remember a great 150 that he scored against England and a century that he scored against a Pakistani attack consisting of Akhtar, Ajmal, Afridi and Gul. There was also a century in Sri Lanka where he was the only batsmen from South Africa who scored any runs.

You're judging Amla's captaincy during a poor phase. He's not going to be as good as Clarke in this department but he has won a series in Sri Lanka. Clarke didn't look anything but mediocre when Australia were being thumped in India or the UAE.

Amla had a similarly great peak but he did it while batting at #3 and averaging a million out of his comfort zone as well. That 90 all-out, 45 all-out game you're talking about is one in which Amla and Smith scored match-winning centuries in.

Clarke is a great captain, no doubt.

You know who didn't? South Africa for almost a decade, the same decade when they had Smith as their captain. So it was quite a big deal when he did it with Tahir, Elgar, Faf, etc.

Any particular reason behind it if you don't mind ? I have lots of respect for Clarke as he carried his team on his shoulder during their worst phase. He was like a lone warrior in that team post retirement of greats.

If I can guess,

1. His fiasco with Lara bingle

2. His narcissism at times.

3. His supermodel image.

4. His beef with his team mates.

Am I close?
 
Root, Stokes and Finn all have the capacity to be England greats IMO.
 
Lets talk about young guns

Kane Willamson
Kohli
Root
Starc
Sanju(might take him few more years to get settled)
Mason Crane
 
Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq will end up as Pakistani greats as far as Test matches are concerned.
 
AB and Dhoni will surely go down as an ODI great but AB hasn't done that much in the Test format. Dhoni is simply not a gun player to get close to ATG in the test format. Having said that, AB has been just behind Amla at global stage in the last 5 years.

I don't think that Amla and AB will go down as an ATG in the test format. No one else is close to ATG level as a batsman right now. I am talking about batsmen who have played enough.

For bowlers, it starts and ends with Steyn for obvious reasons.

Younger players have a long way to go. Often fans get too excited with 5-7 tests played in home conditions. That's hardly a sign of potential when we talk about ATG material.

Interesting point. I am trying to create a comprehensive (nothing is 100%) formula for rating players to see who the best were.
