HBL PSL 2020 attracts some of the world’s very best

• Dale Steyn and World Cup winners Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Jason Roy among 28 international players to have registered in Platinum category to date

• PCB to release further additions to the HBL PSL Player Draft 2019 player pool by or before 21 November

Lahore, 13 November 2019:
A fascinating duel between World No.1 Babar Azam and one of the modern day greats Dale Steyn is on the cards for the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 as the South African speedster is among the 28 international crowd-pullers to have registered to date in the Platinum category for one of the premier and most-watched leagues on the planet. The registration window for the foreign players is still open and closes on 21 November following which an updated list will be released.

The battle between Babar and Steyn made global headlines when the Pakistan batsman struck the South African pace ace for 10 boundaries in a span of just 31 balls in the Centurion Test late last year. He then followed up with five boundaries in 29 balls in the Cape Town Test to belt Steyn for a total of 16 fours off just 66 balls.

If the two end up in opposite camps when the player draft takes place in the first week of December, then the local and foreign fans are up for the resumption of an engrossing contest between a present day star and one of the all-time supreme fast bowlers.

This is the first time Steyn has registered for the HBL PSL, which reflects the popularity of the competition and the brand it has become since its inception in 2016. If picked, Steyn’s next year’s visit to Pakistan will also be his first since the 2007 tour when he played Tests in Karachi and Lahore.

Steyn was excited to be part of the draft pool, when he said: “Cricket means the world to Pakistani fans and I am excited that I will get to be a part of the HBL Pakistan Super League draft pool.”

Steyn’s longtime South Africa team-mate Hashim Amla and England’s World Cup winners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid are the other international players in the preliminary list of 28 cricketers who have registered in the Platinum category for the HBL PSL 2020.

Amla also toured Pakistan in 2007 before returning in 2017 with the ICC World XI for a three-match T20I series, while for Ali and Rashid, next year’s trips will be their maiden cricket tours, if picked.

Moeen Ali said: “I am very excited that I am going to be a part of such an incredible pool of players for the HBL PSL Player Draft. On the circuit, players talk about the quality cricket that they have experienced playing in the HBL PSL and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Apart from Ali and Rashid, Jason Roy is the other World Cup winner to have registered for HBL PSL 2020.

Roy, who has previously represented Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators, said: “Pakistan cricket always offers unique and exciting stuff and this tournament is no different. They have some of the most passionate fans in the world and it is extremely heartening to experience this passion. I have had brief but memorable stints at the HBL PSL and it's great to be back in the pool.”

Roy’s compatriot Alex Hales and West Indies’ star Kieron Pollard are familiar faces in the HBL PSL.

Alex Hales, who was picked by Islamabad United in 2018, said: “I had a great experience playing in Karachi last year and I can’t forget the love that I received from Pakistani fans. HBL PSL has grown so much in such little time and it is definitely an exciting tournament to be a part of.”

Kieron Pollard, who played for Peshawar Zalmi in the 2019 event, said: “Last year, I truly experienced what cricket means to Pakistani fans as I played in front of jam-packed crowds. It was definitely a highlight in my career and I hope that the HBL PSL festivity continues this season as well.”

Overall, the 28 players come from eight cricket-playing nations, with England boasting seven, South Africa six and the West Indies five, Afghanistan and Australia three each, Sri Lanka two and Nepal, and New Zealand one each.

While the PCB will announce additions to the list by or before 21 November, it will share to date Diamond, Gold, Silver and Emerging lists later this week.

List of international players who have registered in Platinum category to date:

• Afghanistan – Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb-ur-Rehman and Rashid Khan

Angelo Mathews :))) the same guy who pulled out of a Pakistan tour a month ago, same goes for Perera but at least he's toured a couple of times before.
Would've been nice to have some more elite tier players but first year where all of it's going to be held in Pakistan so got to make do with what we have, which admittedly isn't bad.

Dale Steyn is gonna be solid pick. His T20 record is phenomenal. He still has pace.

Thats an impressive list. Really good to see world especially Eng with so many national players putting their hands up and also Afghani players coming back to PSL after sometime.

And people were saying nobody will come, some posters better stop making bold predictions regarding everything before anybody starts to pin point their previous posts. :smith

True and legendary bowler of the era would be playing in Pak for the very first time If I am not wrong i.e if he gets selected.

This is the most number of big names we have seen in any season putting their hands up for PSL 5 which is happening in Pakistan and there are few names which are yet to be added.

He has retired in odis and tests so less chance of injures.I will bot be surprised if he is the first pick of the draft.

I will not be surprised if Lahore pick him and still fail, despite having a bowling lineup of Shaheen, Steyn and Haris Rauf.

biggest pick for me would be Jason Roy.... hopefully we can get butler, stokes, woakes, jofra and bairstow in the list too... tht would be legandary

not sure if there is international cricket around tht time... smith would be good as well

Eoin Morgan played for KK for a few games, get him in the list too....

getting goosepumps already

little disappointed on having no Kiwi other than Munro... Guptil, Ferguson and Bolt would be great...

Depends upon the availability and international fixtures too. No league other than IPL gets a separate window so availability is an added constraint as well for many leagues.

Can some of these names be selected in Diamond if they dont get picked in Platinum? I think it might depend on a player and what is the minimum wager he is willing to go for.

Guptill should have been there but the rest of them will be busy with the test series against south africa.Thats why there isn't kane williamson or faf du plesis on the list.

Have to say Eng has reciprocated well with us allowing our premier players for the 100 tournament.

Steyn toured Pakistan in 2007.

I wasnt sure, thanks for the info. Its a shame Pakistani fans couldnt see Steyn at his peak but he still is enough of a bowler to leave an impression if he gets selected.

Jason Roy is the big deal.

Can’t wait to see him bat in Pakistan.

Wow this is a massive boost for cricket in Pakistan

The WC winning team members ready to come over.

Slap on the face of those who thought PSL in Pakistan would be a failure

You can already see indians moaning on twitter advising foreigners to be safe.

It would be amazing if Steyn could end up in the same team as Naseem, which may be Quetta. It will do Naseem a world of good, plus the 2 would form an amazing partnership.

Roy, Moeen and Rashid playing in Pakistan will really help convincing England to tour later on.

Mamoon looks like Jason Roy is gonna play in PSL in Pakistan. Hopefully that will help convince England tour here someday

I want to see Banton and Babar bat together again this year and Steyn bowling would be the cherry on top.

Foreign players list is of Platinum category. There will be more foreigners in Diamond and Gold category In Sha Allah.....

Kudos to wasim ,ehsan mani and the psl management to convince these foreign stars in playing the full psl in Pakistan.

Excellent list .Good to see top Afghan players in the list .hopefully relations between 2 board normalized after this .One cannot judge whole nation with one stupid statement from afghan official

Interesting to see how much these elite players will be available due to international commitment

The PSL Brand is bigger than the players. Any quality product if marketed correctly will generate value? The PSL has proven that in the most adverse conditions. We should stop the demagoguery of players whose presence adds average value. It certainly does not increase revenue.

Is shakib al hassan eligible to play?

He has been banned for 2 years by the ICC for failing to report corruption. There is no way he is eligible.

Few others such Tamim and Mustfiz have played in the last few editions.

I wonder whether they weren't invited or they still have "security concerns" over traveling to Pakistan.

But icc has no says in tournaments like psl or ipl and surely their rules don't apply in domestic leagues.Wheras mustafizur and tamim are probably added in the diamond category.

Expect the announcement of david miller in the platinum category in a day or two as according to sources talks with miller and other cricketers are in the final stages. The source also confirmed this is not the final list of platinum category players.

All these leagues are formally approved by ICC so any ban by ICC for a player is obliged by all the leagues as well.

So you are saying Amir could have played in the T20 league all around the world while he was banned?

I wonder why Fizz and Tamim's names aren't listed in the OP? While all other players have been.

Good list - now PCB must make sure that the contract will be made with unconditional agreement on travelling and staying in PAK.

That was probably a pre-requisite.

I wonder how many of these players will be willing to be picked up in the Diamond category, since only a few can be picked in the Platinum round. Some of them probably won't.

I wrote it many times in past - two things need to be changed in PSL if they are to encourage top tier foreigners.

1. The drafting system - either, they have to make a separate cap (open bid) for foreigners and they have to allow teams to carry budget forward; or they can make it “pay as you play”, with a signing money (base fee) & match fee per game available for selection basis, allowing unlimited foreign drafts (with 4 to play at a time and no one signs for multiple teams).

2. They must change the time - 2 weeks before IPL (finish to start), PSL will never get top pros; some of whose IPL Insurance premium will be higher than PSL’s base pay!!!!!! Best solution is to arrange PSL during IPL window, because PSL’s competition isn’t with IPL, rather international cricket. For the second year running, I think we won’t see any BD players, because of international commitments, and this will become a bigger problem going forward with most teams.

It was on the cards after his recent visit to Pakistan. If PCB plays its cards properly, it can get England to tour very soon, which will completely change the scenario of Pakistan.

For permanent restoration of cricket in Pakistan, one of India, England and Australia have to come here. No disrespect to the likes of Sri Lanka and West Indies, but their willingness to come makes little difference in the grand scheme of things.

India won’t come because of political situation and Australia don’t want to touch Pakistan with a barge-pole. England is our best hope.

England would be a big deal definitely. With the PSL more of them will be here soon. If the PCB can convince a chunk of the first-team players, that would be more than half the work.

If players like Hales, Roy, and also some other domestic players from England travel to Pakistan that will make a big difference. England and South Africa travelling to Pakistan will be a big step to getting international cricket to return to Pakistan.

Now difference between PSL & IPL is just a handful of foreign players. Next year even Stokes, Warner, ABdV might agree to play in Pakistan.

Are they going to stay in a hotel for a whole month?

There were reports earlier that foreign players have been offered contracts to play just for a week or 15 days and not necessarily the entire season. Some of these foreign players could be playing just 3 or 4 matches.

These are fake reports depending on international duties all the players will play all their respective matches.

Are these players even going to be available for the entire PSL?

No point throwing away so much money on getting them if they'll be available for 4-5 games.

Australian star Shane Watson is expected to return to Pakistan next year after he was included in the Platinum category for HBL Pakistan Super League 2020.

Watson, the most-sought after T20 cricketer, has featured in all four editions of the HBL PSL. His best run, however, came in the 2019 edition in which he was awarded player of the tournament and played a crucial hand in helping Quetta Gladiators secure their maiden title.

Watson was the highest run-getter in the tournament as he piled up 430 runs in 12 matches at a blistering strike rate of 143.81. The hard-hitting batsman averaged 43 – the highest amongst the top five run-getters in the edition – and cracked four half-centuries with 91 not out being his highest score.

Though he kept Quetta Gladiators fans on their feet throughout the tournament with his riveting knocks with the bat, his moment of the tournament came with the ball.

Asked to bowl the last over, his only rotation of the arm in the tournament, against Peshawar Zalmi in the Qualifier, with the opposition requiring 21 and a destructive pair of Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy on strike, Watson bowled Pollard to seal a berth in the final for his side.

Shane Watson, while recalling his experience of playing in Pakistan earlier this year, said: “I can't wait to come back to Pakistan and play in season five. I had an amazing experience in Karachi during the last HBL PSL.

“To be able to connect with the cricket-loving fans in Pakistan and experience Quetta Gladiators winning their first HBL PSL was an amazing experience and one of the highlights of my career.”

Earlier this month, Watson, who has 316 T20s under his belt, was announced as the president of the Australian Cricket Association and his eagerness to return to Pakistan underscores the popularity of the HBL PSL amongst elite T20 cricketers.

He will be joined by Nicholas Pooran (West Indies) and Mitch McClenaghan (New Zealand) in the Platinum category. McClenaghan played four matches for the Qalandars in HBL PSL 2018 while Pooran was part of the Sultans rosters in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

English bowler Steven Finn has also joined the HBL PSL Player Draft and will be part of the Gold category. The lanky pacer was part of the Islamabad United team in 2017 and 2018.

HBL PSL Player Draft on 6 December

The much-anticipated HBL PSL Player Draft will be staged at the National Cricket Academy, Lahore, on 6 December.

Really want to see Dale Steyn in PSL. He is currently topping the MSL wicket chart with 15 wickets and clocking 140kph. Looks fit and firing and that is some sight !

Amazing.

What a sight it would be in Pak.

English players have always had a sympathetic view of pakistan, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid play a big part in this but i think overall with the amount of passion and fans theyve seen when the icc tournaments come to the UK, they probably trust their guts a little bit more than the other teams who dont really get exposed to pakistani people or culture.

Need a good PSL in Pakistan to restore some pride in cricket in Pakistan
