A great musician has passed away today on the 11th of January 2016. RIP Ziggy

He was an English genius - a musical legend from the late sixties onward who inspired and influenced numerous younger artists, a pioneering style icon who blurred gender lines, a movie actor - a real one-off.

Mrs Robert and I will listen to a few of his LPs and raise a glass tonight.

RIP, Thin White Duke.

This is a tribute thread on someone who has passed away. Let it be that way instead of questioning others who have not heard of him.

What's the point of opening a new thread just to ask you what world you live in? It's best if its asked in here where the person is question is already being discussed. Now tell me, are you 15 or do you live under a rock?

Not heard about him either, so what the fuss? Is it compulsory to know about everyone in the world?

It's just shocking that people don't know about such a legendary rock star. Its like people not knowing who Elvis or Michael Jackson are.

Robert just listened to space oddity and the man who sold the world in succession. Tears

Most people in their twenties in India have probably never heard of him. That kind of music has not been mainstream in ages.

Sad. However, anyone who has ever listened to rock music would know or hear about the influence of David Bowie on this particular genre. Listening to his own music is a different thing. I'm surprised people haven't even heard of him. He is cited as an inspiration by many of the young rock stars.

Would suggest to everyone not to pollute a tribute thread by starting useless to and fros. Show some respect.

Tbh hes still very popular in Pakistan amongst many of the literate people

Yeh Bowie jo Koi bhi tha, Bhagwan uski aatma ko shanti de.

I actually like these condolence threads, have learnt about so many people only after they died thanks to these tribute threads. Now I can read a bit about who he was.

It seems as though Indians live under a huge rock or possibly don't listen to any music other than bollywood

Unless you're a hardcore rock fan, you'd hardly find any David Bowie fans among younger kids or even people who have heard of him. I wouldn't say the same for MJ or Elvis or the Beatles .

Anyway glam rock is pretty much dead isnt it? Can't think of any artist right now anyway.

Although glam rock died back in the late 70's the influence can still be found in a lot of recent acts such as Motley Crue, Kiss Placebo, Marilyn Manson, and The Darkness.

Moreover, Bowie's songs have been covered by some of the biggest mainstream bands as well such as Nirvana, Beck, Smashing Pumpkins, My Chemical Romance and The White Stripes.

eradicator uberkoen not on this thread

uberkoen, please, I am asking again. Don't use this thread for petty point scoring. At least show some respect to the guy who passed away. I hate to even type this, as it adds to the offtopic posts.

RIP....

Man who sold the world is one of my fav....initially I liked Nirvana cover later to came to like Bovi original as well.

RIP. Have heard of him but his music is not my cup of tea. I know him mostly beacause he is married to the model Iman.

Bowie was bigger than glam rock - he encompassed sixties pop, soul, the avant-guard period with Brian Eno in Berlin, krautrock, glossy eighties pop, hard rock and even jazz.

BTW think of the actor who played Tesla in The Prestige.

He was so great in that movie

He certainly was. He actually made appearances on Soul train being one of the few whit tartists to perform on that show but I think he was much better known for his glam rock work than anything else. Tesla was played by Bowie? :O

Wasn't a Bowie fan until Nirvana covered 'The Man who sold the world' in their unplugged album with MTV in NY. Once I realised that it was actually a Bowie song, went and listened to some more of his stuff.

In fact, there is a funny story when in the late 90s, a teenage kid went over to bowie and asked him if Bowie was covering 'The Man Who Sold the World' from Nirvana. Bowie nearly had a fit and told the teenage kid to f off.

Don't know who he was, but the reaction from my friends is huge. Sounds like a big loss, RIP.

I am going to go home and watch the Labyrinth tonight. What a legend. Tragic!

Elvis and Michael Jackson are way more popular than David Bowie so stop getting all surprised that there are people who have never heard of him.

I guess there are many people outside US/Europe who doesn't know Elvis....MJ is recent phenomenon and his dance moves are copied by every college dancers.

I suppose I misjudged and thought that the posters would be mature adults instead of 15 year old girls.

In Pakistan or at least where I'm from in Pakistan, everyone knows about MJ and many have heard of Elvis. I can't say the same about David Bowie.

I'm from Lahore genius. Stop getting all ******** that people haven't heard of David Bowie. He isn't on the same level as MJ or ELvis or Beatles when it comes to popularity.

Why are you getting so worked up? Relax buddy. Take a chill pill.

Shiekhupura isn't part of Lahore btw

Though more influential in the worlds of music, fashion and photography than any of them, I would argue.

I don't know about that. Ziggy Stardust was the only song I ever found memorable. He was a British star rather than a worldwide one. A bit like Cliff Richard.

No him from the life on mars single, really enjoyed that. RIP.

He was Britain Elvis, that's how influential and popular he was in the UK.

Come on Robert this is over the top tbf. MJ is known all over the world for his music, soul and RNB have been influenced by him including his dance moves. Bowie may be a great in rock culture but overall in music there will never be a bigger and more influential star in the world of music.

This.

He wasn't a British Elvis at all, he was bisexual and married a Somali immigrant to change his life around I expect. It's just a shame this union produced no kids.

I know man but I don't think he was as popular as MJ, Elvis or the Beatles worldwide.

There are certain genre's which are a lot more popular then others, Bowie had his own world wide fan base and his work was very influential.

Britain's Elvis in terms of popularity, what about him being bisexual, marrying somali immigrant etc? also, why is it bad that they didn't produce kids

i disagree with him being called the british elvis but what does any of what u posted have to do with his musical legacy? what an awful, awful post.

bowie was great and an influential musician but mj obviously transcended barriers like no other entertainer before him or since. of course mj was helped by the fact by the 80s televisions and radio were becoming common place even in the third world and globalisation was in full swing.

silly comparison.

Debatable..His dance moves changed world not music.

I guess Beetles are the most influential in Music world.
