NEW DELHI: Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport has been declared the world's second best airport in the highest passenger handling capacity category by the Airports Council International (ACI).

The announcement was made by Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) on Monday. DIAL is a GMR Group-led consortium that manages and operates the IGI Airport.

The airport shares the second spot with Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport of Mumbai and Singapore's Changi Airport. IGIA attained the second position globally, only after Incheon Airport, South Korea.

As per Airports Council International (ACI), ASQ 2016 rankings, the IGIA has been named the world's second best airport in its highest category of airports which handle over 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA).

According to DIAL, IGIA's ASQ score increased substantially from 4.96 in 2015 to 4.99 in 2016.

"As we witness robust growth, we look forward to strong collaboration and support of airport stakeholders as well as our passengers. We are now geared to undertake the expansion works at Delhi Airport," said I. Prabhakara Rao, Chief Executive Officer, DIAL.

"IGIA Master Plan-2016 will further enhance the experience of our passengers and create new benchmark for the aviation community worldwide."

DIAL pointed out that the airport has recorded substantial improvement after the GMR led consortium took over the operations in 2006.

The ASQ measures passengers' views of 34 key performance indicators including airport access, check-in, security screening, restrooms, stores and restaurants.

Congrats to Delhites and Mumbaikars. :salute

nice.

and then we have 1970s bus stations called Pakistani airports

Both DEL and BOM may be swanky, but DEL has the advantage of space for both airside and landside infrastructure.

4 runways is no joke, vs BOM's measly 1.5 (effectively).

After these two, BLR and HYD will be among India's best airports.

When I visited Delhi Airport back in 2013, it was alright. Nothing spectacular. There was dust on the furniture and it was clear that it was not maintained properly. But I thought it was still better than London or Amsterdam or NY or Chicago Airports... US Airports are all old.

I found Chennai Airport lot cleaner. Especially the Domestic terminal looked excellent.

LOOL. I heard its almost complete recently. Not sure to how true that is though.

I heard it was almost ready..... and then in typical Pakistani fashion it emerged that the landing strip had huge issues causing difficulty to approaching aircraft and there would be need for significant rework. Now don't know when it will be finally complete. We have been hearing about it for the last 10 years.

The second ranked Mumbai airport can be seen in this video, voiced by Amitabh Bachchan:

been to that airport. Indira Gandhi international.

We were in awe, it was until we came out of the airport that we hit with the reality of what India was actually like.

Great airport, dirt city.

not really a huge issue.
Thing is, its only an issue if there is traffic. Islamabad doesn't really have any traffic. We barely have flights coming and going

It would had been an issue, if the traffic was similar to the Qatar or UAE based airports

India's airports are way better than ours. Though it helps having a functional airlines and a booming Indian airline industry which use airports and hence generate more revenue. Unlike us, with 20 odd PIA planes and a smattering of AirBlue & Shaheen.
Syed1 I have been to Karachi airport decades ago, was okay and pretty big. How is it now?

It is medium sized... but is nowhere near the quality of other international airports. Infact it reflects on the present state of Pakistan.

Not really,Chennai is decent compared to 90s and 2000s but Hyderabad and Kolkata were way better and have better utilities, only good thing about Chennai is connectivity via metro,Local train ,bus coz its in the city.

been to both Delhi and Mumbai.

They are new, and therefore well made. Key for India will be maintaining them.

Great going, congratulations. Pity all ghalazat and gandagi of the country.

Haha haha. Chennai Airport is the worst in india for a famous old city.

I regularly go through chennai airport and the international arrivals section is so poor, baggage area is so dusty, immigration check is like a fish market.

Previously i have been to domestic terminal 3 yrs back. It was so old, false roof falling in few parts, toilets are abysmal.

I dont know whether they have upgraded it recently but international departures is the only international standard thing in Chennai airport.

Hyderabad Airport is very very good compared to Chennai.
