I will get into reasons why but top among it would be the New Zealand captaincy controversy of 2012.

Rosco has had a good career but he could have been one of the greats.

He has been in crazy form in recent times but there always will be a sense that he underachieved

Since Kane Williamson has taken over captaincy, Taylor has averaged 61@85 in ODIs and 75 in Tests

He was still averaging high 40s in BMac's time but it always seemed he had many other thingso n his mind and didnt have the full backing of team management.

And those were supposed to be his peak years

And during those days, he was accused of some soft runs too while in last few years, he has played some really fantastic innings too apart from being so prolific scorer in both formats.

Even in McCullums book he was negative towards Ross Taylor and Guptill, accusing them of not fitting in with the "McCullum" culture and playing for themselves.

If Taylor wasn't mentally strong, and he had other things on his mind, then that's his fault. Not McCullum. You can't blame another man for your own failures.

Is was Taylors eye problem if anything that held him back for a couple of years. Since his eye surgery after that last Pakistan test series he has scored prolificly.

I have no doubt the way the captaincy saga was handled had a significant effect on him mentally. He handled it with grace but did go into his shell. Cant wait to see his side when he retires and releases an autobiography.

McCullum was negative in his biography towards Ross and RT also had problems with Mike Henson.

I agree with the above person, you can't blame another man for your failures.

Taylor is a beast. Got the most wonderful birthday present in all of cricket. Two knicks in the same over in the realm of Kamran Akmal.

I dunno enough about the backroom politics but Taylor has come into a rich vein of form and may neverh it these heights again.

The timing of Taylor's sacking as captain was indeed questionable.

Right after a rare away win in Lanka where he scored a 150+ and a 70* to win the game for New Zealand.

But in hindsight, McCullum charged that line-up big style, no complaints there.

No. Ross should be able to handle any situation and controversy thrown his way. He's always been a classy batsman who on his day is amongst the world's best. Any underachievement can not be blamed on anyone other then himself.

I don't think BMac had anything to do with Taylor's inconsistency. Rosco was always an inconsistent player until recently. He was capable of flashes of brilliance but he could flatter to deceive as well. He has only in the last few years become consistent and has started to deliver on his early promise.

Actually, I dont agree with this. Taylor had a late bloomer and earlier he had some technical weaknesses and flaws and a chronic injury as well. He was overshadowed by McCullum and Williamson but he did well to make a mark beyond these two names.

Or maybe like Misbah, Shakib, Dilshan etc he got better and better with time.

Different players have different career graphs.
