Did Mohammed Amir have the potential to become an ATG if not for the spot-fixing scandal?

An ATG like Wasim, Waqar, Steyn, Ambrose

Wonder how his Test Career would pan out if he didn't get involved in the Scandal ten years ago. Those five years really took a lot of toll on his mind and body and he was never the same bowler again even if he showed few glimpse of his talent

Would he have been a successful Test Bowler with an average of 20-23 today and thus an ATG due to performance in both formats of the game?
 
The ban actually helped him keep his reputation longer. He is a good bowler in seaming and swinging conditions not so much when he has to bend his back. He would have been found out lot sooner. The ban just helped him to create this myth.
 
would've been the best bowler in Pakistan's history after Wasim Akram, had he played those 5 years, he wouldve been part of Pakistan's world cup squad in 2011 and 2015, and Pakistan would've had a huge shot at winning at least one of the 2, if not both. the skill of swinging the ball on command both ways at 90+mph and with the intelligence of his variations....easily could've been the greatest in recent times...
 
No, he was always overrated. He is a good bowler who can be a great bowler in favourable conditions, but he never had any ATG potential.. If he hadn’t been banned, I doubt he would get so much hype.
 
It can be a tough one to say really...as pre ban back in 2009-2010 in his first year he should great potential and willingness to learn and was actually bowling pretty fast between 90-92mph at times but was consistently in the high 80's most of the times.

Since his comeback after the 5 year ban, he has lost the zip he had pre ban because all these 5 years did not help him at all and neither he helped himself as he did not work out did not exercise or keep himself fit for a comeback and then in a way was rushed to the team without playing much domestic cricket at all. For someone who is making a comeback to cricket after 5 years needed to be monitored from the start and gradually should have been introduced to the 3 formats of the game rather than being rushed in as soon as he was eligible to play again.

Had he not lost his zip, pace or the 5 years, he could have been a really good fast bowler but I do not think he would have become an ATG, as I would say that had Asif been sincere to his talent and played for Pakistan he would have been an ATG by this time.
 
As a LOI fast bowler, he would have been just behind Was ans Waqar.

As a test bowler he could have ranked amongst our all time top 5.

Those who are saying that he is overrated should notice that he is pretty un-hittable in the modern game just behind the likes of Bumrah and Archer. Had he stayed out of controversies, we could have had a killer limited over bowling attack.
Ajmal Amir Lala Hafeez and maybe Asif (because two new balls were allowed in 2012).

I think Butt could have been easily amongst out all time top five openers, Asif could have been our best test bowler in history, and I have already talked about Amir here.
If only they were a little sensible.

Oh dear this remind of good child hood memory of Muhammad zahid the fastest we ever had who couldn't play many games for pak due to unfortunate back injury..

Amir was never that good people are overreacting on his little purple patch in 2010
 
Probably - I have seen him at 18 (not 18, but may be 2-3 years max) and he was developing into a truly world class cricketer in shortest time. And, to my surprise he was actually a better batsman before ban than after, which suggests guy didn’t work on his batting in those 5-6 years.

Surely, surely had he not been banned, Amir would have played in Counties, and that would have been a game changer. He was destined to reach 350+ Test wickets at ~25 and may be 2000+ runs at ~20; while in ODI around 400 wickets at ~25/~4.5 and another 2000 runs.

Also, he would have definitely led PAK in 2019 WC, and may be 2023 as well, if not 2027 also.
 
Afridi had the potential to be the greatest all rounder ever. However what he did in cricket is in front of everyone. Same is the case with Amir, very little to show for all the hype
 
Lol Amir might have retired from test cricket at the age of 21-22 complaining of workload given the amount of golden boy treatment he was getting
 
Don't think he would have been up there with Wasim. But he would have been a better bowler than he is now.
 
Amir was lethal in UK only. He was never lethal outside of UK. I don't think he was ever ATG material.
 
a good bowler in a mediocre team would always look great, however we would never know what he could have achieved sometimes players look rubbish in there younger days then become good players later on like ajmal, sharma etc.

however being ban does hype you just like it did with salman butt who was average at best then some people think if he didnt get banned we would have had a great batsmen.

Too short and too slow across longer spells.

He was good enough to be Hazlewood quality - excellent outside Asia, below average in Asia.
 
People forget that before his ban Amir was a decent lower order batsman. He had the potential to be not only an outstanding bowler but a special test match all rounder.
 
He came back not as good a cricketer as he was pre-ban overall. Nobody can say for certain if he would have ended up being one the best Pakistan ever had if not for the ban but he would have definitely had a better career.
 
the question is about POTENTIAL! Did Amir have the POTENTIAL?

the answer is YES! Skill wise he had it all, he had the intelligence to bowl in the middle overs and the death, his economy rate is second to none considering he bowls in both the power plays...and all this preferential talk was ONLY because of the potential he had.

the way he was bowling in 2009, 2010....he would've won us that 2011 world cup in India where we lost by 29 runs, he wouldve definitely saved those.

There is a reason the best batsman in the world (kohli) considers him the most difficult bowler to face....and this is all post ban... 5 years is a loooong time for a fast bowler to be out....everyone peaks differently and Amir's was right then...its an utter shame...but even after all this, even after he lost his pace and his banana swing...he is still Pakistan's best bowler.... People consider Boult such a great bowler, but Ill tell you this...Amir wouldnt have conceded those 15 runs in that super over...FACT.

No, Amir is around 5’11 which really limits the lengths he can bowl.

On modern wickets in the era of big bats any fast bowler shorter than 6’2 is fighting a losing battle. In the last 30 years only Dale Steyn, Waqar Younis and Ryan Harris (6’0, 6’0 and 5’11 respectively) have succeeded as fast bowlers shorter than that.
 
ATG is asking a lot but the people talking as if he's a nothing bowler is pretty ridiculous. This kid could swing the ball a mile while throwing 140-150 clicks at 17/18. Not playing cricket for 5 years when you are at your biggest developmental age and then coming back isn't that easy.

I don't know if he would have been an ATG but I think he definitely would have been something special if he never got banned.

Agreed! skill wise he had it all, pace, swing/seam (both ways), accuracy, variations...ability to open the bowling, bowl in the middle and the death...what more do you want?
