Did Pakistan get unlucky due to being placed in a tough group?

Both the finalists are from Pakistan's group.

Pakistan had beaten both the semifinalists from the group recently.

So what do you guys think? Did Pakistan get unlucky?
No.
The two best teams in the tournament are playing the finals.
Being placed in the other group would not have helped Pakistan. They would have lost even to Afghanistan.

Pak and BD should take heed being in a tough group. If they were in the other group instead of say England, they probably could've made it out of the group. They always have mental gymnastics against IND.

I also think, NZ tactically avoided Aus in the Semis which is a guaranteed loss for them even before the match starts.

Pakistan needed to win that NZ game. Had they won it, they could've been in semi.

What guarnteed loss. But for Labu's fielding in the last overs NZ almost chased down 382 runs posted by Australia in WC 2023. They lost by 5 runs or so. This Australian team is weaker than that.

Nah they got hammered by NZ, but they had a great chance against IND at 150-2, I thought they were gonna post above 300.

Winning against India but losing to NZ would've knocked Pakistan out because Pakistan-BD game got rained out. NZ would've had 4 points while Pakistan would've had 3.

Pakistan-NZ was a knockout game in hindsight.

Yeah, I also think if Tanzid had gotten Ravindra run out against NZ things could've gotten interesting for us.

ICC should really stop grouping IND PAK together for their guaranteed profits. There was a good chance these two could've played in knockout match.

You are unlikely to see FIFA putting Argentina-Brazil in same group every time even though profit could increase if they do that.

ICC is run by greedy, unethical, and stupid people currently. So, I don't expect ICC to make sensible decisions. :inti

If Pakistan's goal was to reach the Champions Trophy semi-finals, then yes, considering their current form, having strong teams like India and New Zealand in the group would indeed make it a "group of death," as you've mentioned. However, if Pakistan intended to lift the Champions Trophy, it doesn't matter which group they are in; they would still face tough teams in the semi-finals and finals.

Pakistan were host. So advantage was with them against nz.

Anyways, i do agree that ICC should do proper seeding of groups and dont fixate on india pakistan. Makes it look too unprofessional

Australia, England, South Africa is a much tougher group if you ask me. Beating two of them is no easy job. You will rely on others to beat each other.

Pakistan actually get placed in easier groups tbh.

Asia Cup biggest example.

18, 22 - Hong Kong
23 - Nepal

Cause there would be a danger of Pak not qualifying while Afg, Bang, SL fight amongst themselves.

Even 24 WC super easy group. Teams like NZ and SL were in tougher groups with 3 good teams.

Conversely, India got lucky to be in the same team as Pakistan NZ and Bangladesh. Imagine facing the mighty England South Africa and Afghanistan, they probably would have been out in the qualifiers itself.

No such thing as an easy group in the Champions Trophy.

Let's assume Pakistan had 3 teams out of Australia, South Africa, England, and Afghanistan in its group. I don't see them getting a top two finish there either.

We lost to the best two teams - certainly a bit of bad luck. And then the Fakhar injury. Qudrat ka nizam was not in our favour

You were playing on your home grounds (one current and one previous), how much more advantage did you need?

Not really, we would have got knocked out in the other group too.

India and NZ contributed very little to Babar and co playing 51% dot balls in both their innings. You put a bowling machine infront of these lads and they would be doing tuk tuk in the name of ‘taking the game deep’.

Infact It is India who were put in the toughest group..Pak is the reigning CT 2017 champions and have better records against India in Champions trophy..Overall also pak has more no of odi wins against India..In ICC tournaments nz always performed well against India and also recently white washed India both in odi and test in its home den..if India were put in the other group, it would have been a cake walk, as it had defeated England recently, Australia is a depleted side which came by luck to semis, afg never performed against India, SA only be a Lil tougher team but again we have performed well against them in ICC tournaments..so stop whining and move on .

I still see some posters defending Babar saying he reached 6000 ODI runs faster than Kohli.

Jokes aside, you make a valid point. If Pakistan played in the other group they would have made it to the semis and from there on you never reallly know. On their day day Pakistan can beat anyone.

The same Afghanistan which got trashed by South Africa? And as per yesterdays showing SA were quite average

2 quick games against the tourney's finalist didnot help, also the triseries before CT killed their surprise factor.

So this is the level of Pakistan cricket now??? These excuses are not good.

What do we want?? To be placed in a group with Uganda, Kenya, namibia???

Even in that group, there is no guarantee that this team will qualify.

Pakistan team was a bad team because of pathetic selections and over-hyped inclusion. Simple

This team lost badly, fair and square.

It's about time Pakistan tells ICC to stop playing India in every tournament. No other sport that I know of does this. Makes a mockery of the game.

Also, I'm fed up with how one sided it almost always is as well.

I have supported Babar quite a bit in the past few years as I really thought he has the hunger to take his game to the next level in all formats.

Unfortunately, his slump isn’t recent as social media is portraying it to be. His returns have been mediocre since 2022 T20WC, and he has been exposed quite horribly. The frustrating part is that he has only regressed since then and the lack of a match-winning knock is definitely something that will always be held against him.

Only so much support can be given to a player, and then when you see him play for himself quite clearly, the support should end and questions should be asked. That innings in the first game has to be one of the worst I have seen a specialist batter play for Pakistan. It’s as bad as Fawad Alam’s mental breakdown against Australia in 2014, and he lost his place in the side for quite a few years because of that.

Agree with that. But I was talking only about this CT
The group pakistan were in was easier.
How?

No not unlucky. We are at a level when all of the other teams apart from Bangladesh are better than us. Although the BCCIs and Indian broadcasters insistence on Indo Pak match works against us. India are way ahead of us and it means we are already 2 points behind as soon as the groups are announced.
