Now that a 2-0 defeat looms for Pakistan, it suddenly dawned on me how impressive Windies had been to pull off a test win and lose only due to poor decision making at the toss. Pakistan were probably the best team to tour England in the last decade but is it fair to say that west indies have, quite comfortably, the better tourists this time? Discuss.

West Indies caught England off guard.

Consequently England took the series against Pakistan very seriously.

Yes. And they have a better seam attack which the numbers since Jan 2018 bear out.

They have a significantly better pace attack in spite of not having the reincarnation of the second greatest fast bowler who ever lived.

The fact that three test matches were played with the WI prior to this series means England's batsmen were very well prepared. If you compare the bowling attacks of WI and Pakistan you need to take it with a pinch of salt. I feel the WI bowling is inferior to that of Pakistan, perhaps with the exception of Nasim for whom this has been a learning experience from which he hopefully benefits from in the long run.

West Indies played quite well in the series prior to Pakistan's against England and caught them off guard and won the first test.

England then were quite ready for the Pakistan series and have so far showed how fairly superior they are in all departments and especially in home conditions.

Pakistan have as mostly given away match winning positions to the opposition to get home and that is where they have lacked most.

England pulled off a stunner by defeating Pakistan once and being in a strong position in one more match. As we know, Pakistan is stronger than England in England.

West Indies would have won that series 2-1 if not for Holder's (and their TM's) brainlessness at the toss.

Pakistan could have been leading 1-0 this series if not for their lackluster bowling in the fourth innings.

Both teams gobbled it up. Pakistan a little more. It's a travesty that England have won/are winning both series' given how ordinary they looked throughout this summer.

England were better prepared to face Pakistan as they already have played a good amount of cricket beforehand.

Put it this way, England had a head start after playing Windies.

Which was negated by Englands howlers in the field and lacklustre bowling in the first innings. Pakistan however were firing all cylinders in the first innings.

No.

The rank 7 team was playing against a top 3 side and as the series progressed flash-in-the-pan gets ironed out and the true calibre of the teams is revealed. Pakistan playing 3 test series is a blessing in disguise for them. Any longer and that gulf becomes more pronounced.

Apart from the first match west indies was completely outplayed ,they didn't even win a session in the other two games but yeah 1-2 sounds better than 0-2.
Is there a series between pak and wi in this cycle?Would be interesting to watch.

You can say that now. But Pakistan should have won the first Test. Haris Sohail could have made difference. I know should have could have might seem like excuses.

The important thing is that Pakistan are improving with young cricketers. The bowlers will only get better, hopefully Hasnain can also be devoloped as a back-up and just need Haider Ali and an additional batsman in the line-up. I am not worried for future.

All it takes is a single failure to discard them and lookout for new supposed stars. Pakistan’s blessing and bane are both its fans. We have only ourselves to blame.

Well they had a significantly better bowling attack on the back of which they were able to clinch a victory.

Our mentally weak lot dominated the first Test, before throwing it away in two sessions.

West Indies England first test was a hard-fought game. Regardless, England have been rubbish while the tourists have been even worse.

I said this before and I’ll say it again,
Pakistan have been in a bubble since June whereas England were match ready and honed for this series...

We also have two players that are being carried one of whom is also captaining the side..... with all this I’m surprised we remained so competitive...

Eh? When did Pakistan last beat England in England - 23 years ago?

You need to understand the posts before typing random stuff. It’s not about single failure. How long has Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali been around? They are not consistent enough. Both might play a match-saving innings here, but is that enough to keep holding on to them, especially Asad Shafiq? So one of them has to be replaced and Asad is that guy. Therefore you need an additional batsman in the middle-order. That could be Haris Sohail already if there are no more options.

And Abid Ali is not a long term solution, hence Haider Ali should be groomed properly.

I have been watching cricket since 1990 so I am not just posting on basis og one failure as you put it. If those senior batsmen had taken responsibility in the second innings of first Test we would have won that. And this is not first time they have bottled under preassure. Just go and look for the scorecards.

The biggest failure our management does is that they keep resisting with players who perform every 10th match. That is why we still see the likes of Shafiq, Hafeez and Malik in the national colours.
