COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s surprise whitewash of Pakistan in the two-Test series this month was down to witchcraft, captain Dinesh Chandimal said on Tuesday, drawing mockery on social media.

Chandimal told reporters he had received a special blessing from a meyni, or sorcerer, ahead of the two-match series in the United Arab Emirates.

“I am always ready to accept the blessings of anyone — whether it is a meyni or any clergy,”
Chandimal told reporters after returning to Colombo. “You can have talent, but without this blessing you can’t move forward.”

His comments came a week after Sri Lanka’s sports minister denied ordering the struggling national team to use witchcraft ahead of the Test series.

Dayasiri Jayasekara threatened to sue a sorcerer for claiming that at his request she cast a spell over Pakistan to ensure Sri Lanka’s victory.

Several Sri Lankan politicians, business leaders and sports stars put their faith in witchcraft or astrology.

Former president Mahinda Rajapakse took the advice of his personal astrologer before calling an election two years ahead of schedule in January 2015, only to lose badly.

Chandimal said the sorcerer he consulted was the mother of a friend, and he was willing to accept her blessings.

But since the Test victory, Sri Lanka have fared less well.

They lost 5-0 in the subsequent one-day series against Pakistan and also went down in a three-match Twenty20 series.

Sri Lankan fans made fun of Chandimal and criticised his sorcerer online, with many calling her a fraud.

“You made predictions, tied talismans, held poojas, but finally we were humiliated,” posted one social media user.

All the predictions of these sorcerers and astrologers are worse than a coin toss.

If Lankans used Witchcraft, then Herath is the witch.

Herath is the witch that destroyed Pak batting.

After the test series, witchcraft be like: "u guys had fun, now i m going to the other side". lmao

Magic is haram so our unbeaten record in UAE is actually intact, after all. :moyo

Dinesh Chandimal: Sri Lanka captain claims shamanism helped his side beat Pakistan

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has claimed that his side's Test series win over Pakistan was aided by shamanism.

Chandimal, 27, helped his side to a 2-0 victory with a 21-run win in the first Test in Abu Dhabi and then a 68-run victory in Dubai during October.

He told reporters he had received a special blessing from a maaniyo, a type of shaman, before the series.

"I am always ready to accept the blessings of anyone - whether it is a maaniyo or any clergy," said Chandimal.

"You can have talent, but without this blessing you can't move forward."

Chandimal said the maaniyo he consulted was the mother of a friend.

His comments came a week after Sri Lanka's sports minister denied ordering the struggling national team to use witchcraft before the Test series.

Dayasiri Jayasekara threatened to sue a sorcerer for claiming that, at his request, she cast a spell over Pakistan to ensure Sri Lanka's victory.

Several Sri Lankan politicians, business leaders and sports stars put their faith in witchcraft or astrology.

After the two-match Test series, Sri Lanka failed to win any of their limited overs games against Pakistan, losing the one-day series 5-0 and all three Twenty20 matches.

All fairytale stuff.

Sri Lanka won because of an unsettled batting unit without misbah and younis on UAE pitches, not playing an offspinner, persistence of shan masood, and Amir playing with an injury (correct me if I'm wrong with last one)

I firmly believe we could have beaten Sri Lanka in the second match at least had Asghar played.

Don’t believe any of it BUT people in se asia do believe in black magic jaadu etc and on my travels have seen someone “possessed” some scary shet

Maybe we should setup a meeting of Chandimal with Ahmad Shehzad, he has already preached Tilikaratne Dilshan about Islam in 2014 :))

It worked on Mickey

Mickey Arther and especially Inzi should be ashamed of themselves, we have lost 2 tests to the WI's home and away, 2 tests to NZ away, 3 to AUS away and 2 to a low ranked Lanka. Only a year earlier we were the number one team in the world and these guys have set us back almost 4 generations, am starting to feel the nostalgia of the days when Pakistan were new to test cricket but that's an oxymoron because that team was probably managed better. If we keep going at the current rate India will actually tour the UAE! :yk2

Magic is haram so our unbeaten record in UAE is actually intact, after all. :moyo

That's the only way they could beat us. Now we know why Babar Azam could not buy a run during that series and Amir was toothless.

When nothing else can breach the fortress, the enemy falls back to black magic.

Bangladeshi black magic is the deadliest , BD is going to lift the next world cup :D

I find shamanism intriguing. It's a set if techniques to get the practitioner closer to nature and engage more if the unconscious mind. Nothing to do with "black magic".

As I have said before there is little difference between this, and some of our players consulting Pirs.

I dislike both but that's for me, people can do what they want with their religion or beliefs.

Watch a movie called 'The Wailing' Korean, do not read anything, trailer etc etc.

Heck of a movie. It's got a uniqueness which only Koreans can conjure.

Going to "pirs" is different from black magic. Pir is someone who is supposed to be close to God due to his worshiping him for longer periods and abstaining from evil, which means that his prayers are more likely to be heard.

Black magic/witchcraft is opposite. Its pleasing the devil/djinns through certain acts so that we can request a favour from him. Its always done for opposite reasons.

As I said in the previous thread, black magic is truth and happens all over subcontinent.

There have been many accounts of how with the help of djinns/shaitan people have influenced other people's lives adversely. In Islam, it is one of the deadliest sins.

It would be regrettable if this has actually been done for a cricket match

"If SL could win Tests due to witchcraft then they should have also won ODIs/T20Is" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

Pakistan’s captain Sarfraz Ahmed has dismissed claims by the Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal that the Islanders’ recent two-match Test series win over them in the UAE was due to witchcraft.

“We lost the two Tests because of our poor batting and that is all,” Sarfraz said. “If they could win Test matches because of witchcraft or magic, then they should have also won the ODI and T20 series,” the Pakistan skipper told the media.

Chandimal told reporters after returning to Colombo that he had received a special blessing from a meyni, or sorcerer, ahead of the two-Test series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

Sarfraz said being a Muslim he believed in the holy Quran and also that there was magic in the world but he chose to blame his batsmen for the Test series defeat.

“I believe in the holy Quran and also that there was magic in the world, but in the Test series we just batted badly and lost chances to win,” said Sarfraz.

He made it clear that while luck played a part in cricket but matches were won and lost on the field by players by their performances.

Pakistan’s former Test skipper Mohammad Yousuf also rubbished Chandimal’s claims.

“Don’t mix cricket with such things. Pakistan’s planning was bad and they messed it up,” said Yousuf.

Yousuf said that if cricket matches could be won through witchcraft or with blessings of sorcerers then Sri Lanka would not have been struggling in all formats of the game.

Chandimal’s comments came after Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister had earlier denied that he had sent the captain to a sorcerer to get blessings for the Test series.

Formats shouldn't be mixed. That's the first thing to go.

And if Pakistan played poorly, it also means that SL was a better team that days.

We have our own religious beliefs, Asanka Gurusinha defends Dinesh Chandimal for witchcraft comment

Sri Lanka won the Test series against Pakistan recently and captain Dinesh Chandimal revealed that they received a special blessing from a meyni, or sorcerer, ahead of the two-match series in the United Arab Emirates. The Sri Lankan skipper drew mockery for the same and the issue once again popped up on Thursday. Sri Lanka team manager Asanka Gurusinha put an end to the controversy and said that the side believes in performing on the field.

“He has answered some questions back there. In cricket, you got to get out there and perform on the field… Each player has to do that. That’s the way the Sri Lankan team believe. “Yes, we have our own religious beliefs like all of your. But at the end of the day, you go there and just play,” Gurusinha said putting an end to the issue.

Sri Lanka overlooked Kusal Mendis for India tour and Gurusinha defended the decision and insisted that the management wants Mendis to play the domestic matches and get his form back.

“We know he’s one of our future players. It’s up to us to protect and guide him through. If we brought him here and he failed, he would have been out of the team for nearly one and half years. We didn’t want to do that. We have some plans for him. We want him to play domestic cricket. I believe he will come strong,” said Gurusinha.

Fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep too missed out on taking the flight to India after nursing an injury and Gurusinha said the team didn’t want to take an unfit unit for a series against the top ranked side.

“We can’t take on the no 1 side with injured players. We want to give him time to build his fitness level. He will be definitely there for the ODI series and we will start from there. He’s not out of Test cricket for us. Hopefully, he will be back by Bangladesh early next year.”

It was all a dream
I used to read about Aravinda and Arjuna in the magazines
With Murali and Sana lighting up the scene
Hanging Sanga's pictures on my wall
Everyday Mahela, Dilshan, Vassy and all
I let my VCR rock
Till the tape pop
Talking about 96 sipping on private stock
Way back when I had the blue and yellow lumberjack
With the fro to match
Now we in the limelight
Cause we can't do nothing right
Never thought that we'd fall this far
And if you don't know now you know ayy
