LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has convened a meeting of its general council on Oct 2 and 3 to formally begin the process of re-electing ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif as the party president.

PML-N central information secretary and Minister for Climate Change Mushahidullah Khan said on Friday that Mr Sharif was unlikely to leave for London till he was re-elected as the party chief. He added that separate meetings of the PML-N’s central working committee (CWC) and general council — a 1,600-strong electorate — had been summoned to elect the party’s central leadership.

Earlier, there had been reports that the ousted prime minister would fly to London on Thursday to inquire after his wife, Begum Kulsoom, who is undergoing treatment for cancer at a private hospital in the United Kingdom.

Begum Kulsoom was on Friday discharged from the hospital where she was admitted after her condition deteriorated three days ago.

In a tweet, Maryam Nawaz said her mother returned home and her further treatment would begin next week.

“Shukar Alhamdolillah Ami is better, discharged from the hospital & back home. Her further treatment including chemotherapy starts next week,” she tweeted.

Mr Mushahidullah said: “Since Begum Kulsoom’s condition has stabilised, Mr Sharif has no plans to leave for London before Oct 3.”

The first meeting of the council would be held at the Islamabad Convention Centre on Oct 2 after a meeting of the CWC earlier in the morning to amend the PML-N constitution that also barred a disqualified person from holding any party office, he said, adding that the second session would be held on Oct 3 to elect a new party president.

He insisted that all legal hurdles in the way of Mr Sharif re-assuming his role as party chief would be removed by Oct 3, and he would take over his former role.

Mr Sharif had relinquished the position of PML-N chief after his ouster from power under the July 28 verdict of the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.

The Representation of Peoples Act 1976 bars anyone who is ineligible to become a member of parliament from holding office in a political party. Ever since the Supreme Court’s verdict, the PML-N has been run by its acting president Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan Nasar, a senator from Balochistan.

The bar is, however, being removed through the Electoral Reforms Bill 2017 passed by the National Assembly on Aug 22 and the Senate, with some amendments, a month later on Sept 22.

The Bill has now been referred back to the lower house of parliament to pass the amended draft law.

“As a session of the National Assembly has been convened for Oct 2 to pass the amendments made by the Senate in the Electoral Reforms Bill, the meetings of the CWC and general council have been scheduled accordingly to re-elect Mian Nawaz Sharif sahib as the party president,” the minister told Dawn over the phone from Islamabad.

According to the parliamentary calendar, the National Assembly was originally scheduled to meet on Oct 6.

Mr Khan added that in the meantime Mr Sharif would continue to appear before court(s) in the National Accountability Bureau references.

A NAB court has summoned the ex-PM on Oct 2 to indict him in a graft case.

So verdict against him is already in trash bin?

He is coming back against as PMLN chief not as PM or MNA/MPA. He can't become PM and MNA/MPA after this amendment only without changing the core of constitution.

Sounds like Pakistan is about to go through a period where the head of the ruling party will run the nation from the background and the pm will just be a puppet. Like India, Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.

Will the Pakistani electorate see though this and elect someone else in 2018?

Then what caused him to lose the party leadership?

Before amendment > The Representation of Peoples Act 1976 bars anyone who is ineligible to become a member of parliament from holding office in a political party.

So if you are ineligible to become a member of parliament thn you can't lead a political party.

Been there, done that. Remember President Zardari?

IMO, bottom line is that SC's verdict forced him out and by amendment he forced himself in.
Next step: changing the rules about Sadiq and Ameen.

SC can throw this amendment out if they want there are examples in our history.

Well then pakistani citizens should vote for judges instead as its clear that we do not need parliments.
:)

I know how any times SC allowed constitution to be thrown in bin.

Well pakistani citizen also don't vote for these political clowns to change the constitution whenever they need for their own convenience. The same NS was against removing 62/63 (Sadiq & Amin) when Zardari asked to do it through 18th Amendment because the amendment was done under his very own political Godfather General Zia but now NS is ready to do any amendment they can give him his seat and status back.

Ghulam ibne Ghulam ibne Ghulam.... The more I think about it, the more I curse Mushy. He had the opportunity of a lifetime to end these dynastic politics once and for all but instead he chose to look after his own interest.

Should have ended Bhutto Sharif politics when he had the chance because otherwise our jaahil awaam will keep voting for them.

There is no quick fix for Pakistan.
Dictatorships/establishment just reset this process.

PPP is dead in North Punjab cause we let zardari to complete his term.

PMLN are still in government. They have been so for four years now. Stop these excuses.

Totally agree with you friend. What a complete flop Mushy turned out to be. For a few flats in London funded by the Saudis he sacrificed a whole country

If I remember correctly, legal experts said that is not possible as the amendment cannot have an retrospective effect. Not sure how this will work out.

Where there is a will, there is a way, these guys could go to any lengths to save "Democracy".

News: PMLN just changed its law to allow Nawaz Sharif to assume chairmanship despite being disqualified over Panama Leaks.

Deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif was re-elected on Tuesday as president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

According to Express News, Nawaz was elected as the party leader unopposed as no one filed nomination papers for the candidacy against him in the intra-party elections.

The development came only a day after President Mamnoon Hussain signed a controversial election bill, allowing a disqualified premier to be elected as party chief. The Election Bill, 2017, commonly known as Electoral Reforms Bill was approved by the Senate and subsequently signed into law by the president late Monday night.

A controversial clause in the bill allows disqualified politicians to hold a public office or to lead a political party. Section 203 of the Electoral Reforms Bill 2017 allows every citizen, except for government servants, to form a political party or become its office-bearer.

The bill seeks to augment eight sets of laws governing the electoral process in Pakistan including the Political Parties Order (PPO) 2002. According to PPO, Nawaz Sharif had to step down as PML-N chief after his disqualification by the Supreme Court in the Panamagate case.

Incensed by the government move, opposition parties had torn up copies of the bill after it was moved by Law Minister Zahid Hamid in Parliament on Monday. Opposition lawmakers, especially those from Imran Khan’s PTI, chanted slogans against Sharif and his family. They gathered around the podium of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq where they shouted slogans for some time.

When Nawaz was in forced exile by Mush he would cry that I long to celebrate Eid in Pakistan, but ever since coming back to Pakistan he has spent every Eid in London :))

Only a person suffering from army hate paranoia will think that these politicians are in way shape or form are loyal to Pakistan. They are only loyal to their pocket.

Not sure it's so straight forward. As we've seen, Bhuttos and Sharrif's are not that easy to eradicate. NRO was undoubtedly a huge mistake but even without it, does anyone really think these guys wouldn't have found a way back? After all, PPP minister claimed "corruption pay hamara haq hai", and it's not easy to defeat such a philosophy. It might even be impossible. There is no substitute to people waking up and taking responsibility for their futures. It's easy to think Musharraf could have done x, y, z, but ultimately, nothing will change until people's mentality changes

Two headlines. What a timing!

Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz on Sunday said that the graft cases against her family have nothing to do with accountability.

Speaking to reporters in London before her departure to Pakistan, she said, "It has been exposed now and the whole world knows that this is not accountability; rather, it has turned into revenge now."

"I do not need to say anything here, the way things have been going on in the past year and a half has revealed the truth to the nation," said Maryam who is expected to appear in front of the accountability court on October 9, in a hearing of the graft cases that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) drafted against the Sharif family as directed by the Supreme Court in its July 28 Panamagate verdict.

"But a politician that has nothing to hide does not shy away from anything, which is why we [Captain Safdar and Maryam] are travelling back to the country to respect the court and the law," she said. "We will still appear in court and try the country's justice system."

Maryam's brothers — Hassan and Hussain Nawaz — are expected to remain in London. PML-N sources close to the family have said that the brothers will look at the outcome of Monday's hearing before making their decision about returning to Pakistan.

On Oct 2, the accountability court, Islamabad, issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Hussain, Hassan and retired Capt Mohammad Safdar for failing to appear in court. The judge, however, did not issue non-bailable warrants for Maryam but repeated the bailable arrest warrants after the counsel for Nawaz Sharif assured the court that she and her spouse would join the proceedings on the next date of hearing set for Oct 9.

Various members of the Sharif family have been in London at different times on and off since Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom Nawaz was first diagnosed with cancer in August.

People close to Nawaz and his wife said the medical interventions had been successful. Doctors familiar with her condition have been reported as saying her cancer is curable.

A five-member bench of the Supreme Court on July 28 had directed NAB to file references against Nawaz and his children in six weeks in the accountability court and directed the trial court to decide the references within six months. The Supreme Court also assigned Justice Ijazul Ahsan a supervisory role to monitor the progress of the accountability court proceedings.

The former premier and his sons have been named in all three NAB references, while Maryam and husband Safdar have been named only in the Avenfield reference.

The trial court judge has already decided that in case the children of Nawaz Sharif do not join the proceedings, the court would indict Sharif alone and start his trial separately.

However, sources said that if Maryam and her husband appeared before the accountability court on Monday, they would be handed over a copy of the reference related to London properties along with the relevant details.

The court may fix a date for indictment of Nawaz, his daughter and son-in-law Safdar after supplying them copies of the reference and other material.

In case of non-appearance, the court may initiate proceedings to declare the accused proclaimed offenders and order attachment of their properties.
