Without Wahab, this pace attack looks very trundlerish. The average speeds of Pakistani bowlers in this match has been

Hassan -132 kph
Aamir - 131 kph
Abbas - 127 kph

Even Indian bowlers were quicker last year when India toured and the slowest was Bhuvi whose average pace was around 132-133 kph I.e. as fast as the fastest Pakistani bowler. Is this attack missing a genuine quick and should Wahab be kept out of this attack of trundlers? Discuss.

Amir bowls 140kph+ on a regular basis.

We have two 140-145kph+ bowlers in Amir and Wahab (latter express pace).

But yes, overall a mediocre attack - only Amir and Hasan are effective but not too consistent these days at picking up multiple wickets.

Amir does not average 140+. Not in tests anyway. Nax is about 135 kph. I'm talk about pace only. Not the quality of the bowling attack.

Consistently bowls 138-140kph in Tests in places like Australia, England.

Everyone slows down on these slow pitches. Johnson was bowling in 130s when in the UAE.

Yes, no,maybe, I dont know and what does it matter?

We need more trundlers like Abbas and less speed demons like Wahab.

You can check the speeds of all English/Australian/Indian bowlers in Windies in the last two years on Hawkeye :srini for comparison.

Nikhil_cric actually Amir kept bowling at 142-145kph in Australia in Tests. Not late 130s.

All the more tiring because Pakistan only bowls 4 specialist bowlers.

Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh are slower while New Zealand have the same pace as Pakistan. Not sure about India and England. Australia and South Africa both have one express pacer so same as Pakistan if Wahab plays. Amir is faster than Lakmal, Mustafiz, Anderson, Hazlewood and Philander, but slower than Woakes, Starc and Rabada. Yadav and Amir have same pace. Odd-145 kph delivery while rest is in 137-142 range. Can't say about Shami, Morkel, Steyn, etc. because they're always injured. So Pakistan is not fastest, but not slowest I would put them in the middle just like the ICC Team rankings suggest.

Yes, its one of the most mediocre bowling attack in addition to being one of the slowest pace wise, atleast the slowest amongst the top 5-6 teams.

It's not a matter of opinion. Abbas is the only trundler in Pakistan team and that's a fact.

Well if you checked the speeds of the bowlers throughout this series. Nobody has averaged above 135 kph in any innings. And especially Aamir has been down on pace in this test.

Amir and hassan can bowl 140 plus when they want , on these pitches there was no use of bowling quick though.

This is blasphemous for Pakistan, our fast bowling legacy is a matter of national pride.

Einstein, good bowlers vary their pace and preserve their energy in dead pitches. If its a green mamba, and especially if there are 5-6 bowlers, the pacers can afford to go full throttle. But with only 4 bowlers, Pakistani pacers have to bowl long spells. And they won't get much purchase by bowling fast on such pitches. Hasan Ali and Amir are very much capable of hitting 90+. And sustaining it at 140.

Maybe the Pakistani bowlers must become vegan.

Siddle , Bond and Zimabwe's Neil Johsons bowling speeds increased when they became vegan

Ishant was touching 150 on Aussie pitches. 140 in Australia is nothing

Not watching cricket these days so haven't seen a few bowl but this is how Cricinfo categorises:
Pakistan
Mohammad Amir - fast
Wahab Riaz - fast
Mohammad Abbas - fast
Hassan Ali - medium fast

India
Umesh Yadav - fast medium
Bhuvi - medium
Bhumrah - medium
Pandya - medium fast

From this, looks like Pakistan has a good pack of fast pacers while India is still persisting with trundlers.

Where are those numbers coming from? I've consistently seen Amir hit 85-87mph. Hassan the same.

Yeah, Abbas is slightly on the slower side.

No, the Indians are not faster.

Hawkeye from Cricinfo. And last year Indian bowlers did click higher speeds on average

A mean average doesn't mean much when bowlers on slower pitches will be using cutters and slower balls. It is just normal.

Plus what match are these numbers from? Send me the link.

And which Indian bowlers bowled faster? On what ground? What type of pitch? Which format?

*Sigh*

People like the OP really need to give the trolling a break at times. Either he hasn't been watching enough cricket to know that Amir is easily capable of bowling at 140 kph+ or he is blatantly lying through his teeth. With Riaz and Amir, there is nothing wrong with the pace of Pakistan's pace attack and with Yasir, it becomes one of the most balanced bowling attacks in the world.

Abbas is a medium pacer but if he keeps taking five-fors, no one should have a problem with that. Asif showed as much when he made Sachin bow to him.

Cricinfo categroisation is a load of rubbish.

Umesh is the quickest Asian bowler by a distance. He can crank it up over 145+ when he wants to.

Lol@ people talking about pitches. Can't believe you people don't know that speeds are calculated at release from the hand. The pitch does not affect the recorded speed at all.:facepalm::facepalm:

Since the pitch is slow, bowlers aren't bowling fast on purpose. Use your brain.

LMAO average speed in a test match isn't a good measure of how nippy a bowler is. Remember this is a four man attack and each of the pacers is bowling 20+ overs in a day. Even the likes of Akhtar won't have average speeds that high if they bowled 20+ overs in a day.

Amir and Hasan are both 140+ bowlers in ODIs/T20s. Wahab is 145+ but he is garbage otherwise. Junaid is in the 135-140kph range and he is also garbage.

Lol not worried at all about the variation in pace on slow test wickets.
Come champions trophy these bowlers will bowl yards quicker than the indians on the same speed guns and register some of the fastest speeds in the competition as always.

The three that you are talking about hardly cross 134-135kph as their fastest ball, let alone average speed, they are not bad though, better than Wahab who can average 141kph for short spells but is worse than Ashok Dinda

Riaz is a yard quicker than Yadav
Umesh sacrificed 8kph pace and he has great control nowadays but merely a 142 kph bowler,he was 147+ once but no comlpaints, vastly improved bowler,Wahab 1-2 kph quicker.

BTW Aaron is the quickest bowler in Asia,he is garbage too but can easily bowl at 155kph as he has shown many times in International games, Not International class though

All that needs to be said really. It would be nice to have faster bowler, but there's more to pace bowling than just speed.

Lol . What world do you live in ?? Pretty sure no indian bowler has ever bowled 155kph let alone being able to easily bowl it . Wahab is easily the fastest in asia as was proved in the world cup , the asia cup and the champions trophy followed by sami , amir , irfan depending on the format and the mood as these guys almost always bowl quicker than their asian counterparts in tournaments and standard speed guns.

Indians being clueless about pace isnt really a stereotype judging by some of the posts here .
155 kph easliy lol.

Is this debate settled?

What were the average speeds of our quicks?

I think the speed was something like (going off the fastest balls bowled):

Wahab>Hasan>Amir>Junaid

Hasan and Amir could swap over on average pace though.

From the speedometer (averages):
Wahab - 147
Hasan - 141
Amir - 138
Junaid - 135

I believe something about there, I have to double check the speed check thread though.

Pace on speed gun is not everything. Pakistani bowlers are quicker in the Air, they skid the ball on the surface rather than hitting deck hard (like most western bowlers), they appear quicker than they are and beat batsmen in length...Hasan and Amir are example of such bowlers. And when they bend their back, they get ball of nip and carry at fuller length, like What Amir did yesterday(against SL/SA) and Hasan has been doing all tournament with older ball. That's when magic happens...

Pakistan bowling mojo is back once again and world knows it ;-)

Wonder if I was right on fastest ball bowled, though I did expect something similar on average speeds. For me pace isn't a big thing, it's overrated and being someone who can hit 145kph-150kph means absolutely nothing if you're a complete spray gun like Wahab.

I'm sure you meant to say they are quicker than they appear

Well honestly we are not up there with starc, cumming, milne sort of category but probably the second tier like Rabada, wood, etc.

It was astonishing to me that faheem ashraf was consistently pacier than junaid and rumman and probably even Hassan. He just doesn't have their ability to move or swing the ball but his pace was up there

Anyone know what the average speed was for the pace bowlers from India and Pakistan this tournament? It would be an interesting comparison.

Might be a closer comparison than bowling averages of pace bowlers from both respective countries.

Being blessed in both facets of the game is somewhat of a curse for Faheem. People talk about him as an allrounder and can only conceive of swapping him for someone like Imad or Hafeez. And with Amir and Hasan and Junaid forming the spearhead of the attack that may be understandable. But he outbowled pretty much every other specialist bowler in the country in his last two domestic tourneys. He's more like a specialist bowler who can also bat. Really really well. Should be given a lot more chances to do both in coming games, along with Shadab.

I'll gladly take the slower attack as long as it can win games rather than 5 Wabs who bowl at 180 kph but keep getting smashed to different planets.

Our Worst Pacer out of the 6 we tried at CT played only one match while being half fit.

He clocked the 2nd fastest CT ball 149.6 kph and got completely unfit after that :)

Amir, Junaid and Hasan all bowled over 140 quite regularly whenever they wanted to and more importantly with great control and that is a decent pace. Who needs 150 or more but no control?
