Do we need a complete T20 reset after this World Cup?

After another disappointing Super Eight run in the T20 World Cup 2026 we really need to ask some honest questions. Was this just a bad tournament or is there something deeper wrong with how we’re building our T20 team?

Yes there were a few positives Sahibzada Farhan stepped up with the bat and Usman Tariq looked dangerous again with his mystery spin but apart from that where was the consistency?

Big names like Babar Azam, Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan haven’t delivered in key moments. The middle order keeps collapsing, partnerships aren’t lasting and we still don’t have proper modern T20 power hitters.

Are we relying too much on one or two players to save us every time? Has the game moved forward while we’re still stuck with the same approach?

Maybe this isn’t about dropping one or two guys anymore. Maybe it’s time for a proper reset, new mindset, fresh combinations and a clear long-term plan.
 
It will result in nothing.

Let me give you an example. Khawaja mafay, without any experience is in the squad.

When you start selecting guys with little experience and no experience of first class or list A, you cant expect them to develop and perform well.

One psl, and we eill be hyping up another player. Look at how everyone was crazy for maaz sadaqat....

You need to force these guys to do atleast two seasons of quaid e azam, ATLEAST, so that they can develop somewhat, and than select them for t20 internationals

We don’t have the talent to compete with top teams. Changing players again and again won’t change the result.

We need batsmen who have worked hard in domestic cricket like Sahibzada Farhan, not just PSL stars like Usman Khan.

Our training and grassroots system also needs serious improvement.
 
The PSL has lowered Pakistan cricket’s standards. The level of competition is far below what players face in global tournaments, which makes the PSL a poor benchmark for assessing international readiness.

Had Pakistan played Abrar in yesterday's match, they would have won. 165 was enough to win, but poor captaincy led to defeat. :kp

But you would have no issues if Faham ul Haq was to be promoted to the Pakistan squad tomorrow.
 
NZ have to win both matches Pakistan isn't out yet...... Playing Agha at 3 and Babar at 4 messes up any chance in high scoring matches please no Babar next match.

Trust in youngsters? Support them for a bit, and then throw them under the bus at the first point of failure and demand the return of Babar, Usman, Nawaz, Shadab etc.?

Just look at how Shadab, Nawaz, Faheem, Shaheen are brought back before the cup.

PSL still has international players, good pressure games and young local talent coming through. It’s not the same as playing a World Cup, but no league in the world fully matches international cricket anyway. Even players from the IPL struggle sometimes when they step up to international level.

The real issue probably isn’t the league itself. It’s whether players keep improving after the PSL, work on their weaknesses and adapt when facing top international teams. The league can help players grow but it can’t do all the work for them.
 
We need to find a better top 6. At least 4 of the top 6 need to be power-hitters or batsmen who can hit 2-3 sixes per innings.
ALL of them need to be good strike rotators at least.

Our average T20 score is 150+/-, which is not good enough at this level. The game has moved on. 180+ should be the benchmark now.

The 5 big boyz + Windies are packed with powerhitters and can do that.

Look at South Africa's top six for instance. de Kock, Markram, Rickleton, Brevis, Miller and Stubbs....all capable of clearing the rope.

So even if you have them 3 or 4 down for not many runs, they still have quality and depth in their batting to post a competitive total.

Not everyone needs to fire. In this format, just 1 or 2 batsmen can quickly take the game away from you.

Ishan and Brook did just that against us
Miller did that against India

The fans, and the journalists cannot handle a top 6 of pure hitters.

You people call them Tullahs. You people dont have the patience for such a process.

You people demand guys like Saim Ayub to be dropped and Babar open in his place.

I disagree bro.

Psl isnt at fault. Its the selectors, media, ex cricketers and fans who are at fault.

One youngster comes in, plays one good game, he ends up being added to the national team. If he isnt added, fans starting going crazy for his addition.

Based on fans demands, our selectors even gave Azam Khan a national cap and even made him part of a world cup.

Someone like Sahibzada Farhan didnt become the highest scorer in the current wt20 just like that. The guy worked his butt off in first class and list A. Got ignored for psl for years and only was added after his performance came on tv.

Had farhan failed in that one game of national t20, he would never have had been selected by IU, never topped the charts of that season and would never had played again for Pakistan.

Our selection for pakistan and psl is based on tv matches thats it.
 
Focus on domestic instead of doing first , pay domestic players Good so that more youngsters take up cricket, improve pitches

They don't respect the development process and it shows whenever a tournament rolls around. They tried during the NZ series and then reverted back to their old ways by bringing Babar back.

Modern cricket demands respect to the little details and having a strong system. This is not the 80s-90s where you just walk around picking Wasim, Waqar, and Inzi like it's no big deal.

I hope they do, but I am willing to put more money on Babar being captain for the 2028 T20I WC than the PCB resetting.

One psl, and we will have maaz sadaqat making his debut for the national team.

Khawaja nafay is in the team based off one random game he played for quetta
 
Packing the side with bits and pieces cricketers who are neither specialist batsmen nor proper batting all-rounders does not work even in the shortest format.
 
Almost all teams in the world are moving towards building a unit with multi dimensional players except they have players who are very good in one department. Hesson is trying to do with fake all rounders, with fake all rounders you only get fake depth. Just look at the aveage batting stay of all the players down the order. Pakistan has the 16th worst 4 to 7 in this world cup. In T20 it is often one batsman can win you a match. But one bowler cannot win you match as he has only 4 overs in his quota. That has to be a 5 bowlers who more often than not bowl full quota of 4 overs. You use 6th bowler only when necessary or for match up. With too many bowlers captain just randomly tosses the ball to bowlers.
 
By all means do a reset and select 10 new players for the next series. The 5 who have a poor start will lose their place immediately after that.
 
When your captain is a freeloader in the side and you have 4-5 bits and pieces guys playing as well in the name of talent, you are bound to fail...

Saim, salman, Shadab need to go.. Thanks you their services but no thanks...
 
Looking at the body language of the team today, we need a complete reset. A new captain, and flushing of oldies like Babar and Shadab.

Babar Azam chapter should be closed permanently now after this campaign. It was clear team management were under specific instructions to play him, he cost us games and the whole world is talking about how much of a mis-fit he is in this format.

I would say remove him from ODIs too, as such selfish players have no space in modern day international cricket.

I might aswell lose every game with the likes of Maaz Sadaqat, Hasan Nawaz etc than become a laughing stock once more for playing an anchor in a T20 line-up.

Babar-Farhan partnership yesterday in the middle overs cost us the game, simple as that.
 
Only way you can move forward is completely remove the players from t20 who have been playing for 5-7 years . They carry lot of toxic and Bakwass mindset .

Only few can stay : Farhan , Usman , Abrar, Mirza , Naseem , Nafay . No one else .
 
Next world cup is a long time away...end of 2027. So lots of time to introspect and make necessary changes. However, we will still beat you in El Classico game next time in South Africa.

Reset is just another fancy word for the famous surgery, it will involve the two love birds making a big comeback against Uganda & their heavy scoring, batting averages et al will be the boost the Pakistani nation and fans of these fellas were desperately in need off.
 
The main objective was clearing the lowest of low bars which was the 2024 horrorshow. We've done that by reaching the Super 8 - expecting anything more from this mediocre team is a fool's errand.

Now the question is how we step up from here ? We first need accountability. Babar, Shadab and Nawaz have flopped in tournament after tournament for the last several years yet we persist with them expecting different results.

Sadly while the next batch of talent, currently being manhandled by England Lions, offer little hope - we've no choice but to invest and groom them the best way possible. PCB should identify the 10-15 most promising youngsters and hire the best foreign coaches to work with them. Put them on specialised fitness programmes, organise A tours during the off-season so they gain exposure to overseas conditions (including FC games please) and get them with a sports psychologist so they learn to think clearly under pressure.

Our rubbish domestic system is producing next to nothing so PCB should directly oversee player development themselves.
 
Not complete, but at least partial. At least 3 from the current T20I squad need to go,including Babar. While some of them, like Shadab need to work on themselves to suit the format.

A high court judge recently sacked due to fake qualifications, he basically lied and used another students id to enroll again


Corrupt so called establishment, Corrupt kingmakers, corrupt lawmakers, corrupt judiciary, corrupt everything…

It doesnt need a reset, it needs something more potent than that…any ideas

This seems like the only realistic solution. Apart from making Abdullah Shafique captain. I think the captaincy should go to a youngster like Maaz Sadaqat or Sameer Minhas so they have a good 10-15 years to grow into the role.

This is why rizwan is no longer in the team
Sport should be separate from politics
When you see the England team you see a united team full of different cultural backgrounds
The Pakistan team should try and follow this system and integrate those players who are upset by Pakistan history or current policies

Not sure if Abdullah Shafique would be good for T20. He seems like an accumulator.

I think Farhan should be the captain. Another option is H Nawaz.

Also giving the Chairman of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics the PCB chairmanship and adding a clause in all player central contracts that every dropped catch in an international match will lead to a 2% deduction in salary and anyone who strikes in T20 below 140 will be have to hit 100 sixes in the nets like Asif Ali

Our whole system is a joke. Players with any potential fade away after only a few performances. When was the last the time we had a player fulfill his potential? I have been watching the national t20 qualifier and the standards looks worse then a charity game. Pretty much all of the players go to shot is a hoick to the leg side and not to mention most of them look like uncles. The less said about fielding standards the better. I have seen better fielding standards in Sunday games. The bowlers have no plan or ability either with the spinners being darters.

As you rightly pointed out identify a group of players and give them to foreign coaches and they should be identified by forgein coaches too because our coaches have no eye for talent or know what they are doing.
 
We need to invest heavily in T20 cricket. Scale down QEA and all the other stuff. Play T20 more and at a more competitive standard across Pakistan. Local club leagues that roll all the way into the National Cup. Multi tier format like English Football league. Get players involved in more overseas leagues. Teach power hitting and range hitting.

Domestic/deperatments whatever it is should be cut down. It is bloated and takes up too much time and resources.

T20 is the future. Invest in it at grassroots level. The game has evolved. Only some nations can produce multi format players and who knows how long they will do for that too. Playing years of first class in Pakistan won't achieve anything.

People here used to mock Sarfraz by calling him a specialist captain. Agha, on the other hand, is a complete failure in all facets of the game, including captaincy, but doesn't get a fraction of the flak that Sarfraz used to receive here. I wonder why?

Its not the only route. We can treat T20 as a seperate sport essentially. T20 you really need to adapt to volatility and have a quick temperment, this is something our players are lacking and can only be achieved through specialist T20 coaching and playing high pressure T20 matches.
 
If you want to reset the team, then do it properly. You can retain players from this squad on one hand. Sahibzada Farhan has been Pakistan's best batter & Usman Tariq has been Pakistan's best bowler. Abrar has been Pakistan's best spinner in the last 12 months but has been dropped after 1 bad performance, Usman Khan has been impressive as a keeper whereas Salman Mirza has bowled decently when he has played for Pakistan. Khawaja Nafay is exciting, promising talent who could have been utilised this tournament.

Right... that's it, get rid of EVERYONE else including T20I retirement for "Bobby" Babar Azam & Fakhar Zaman, chuck Shadab, Shaheen, Nawaz & Faheem in the bin, tell Naseem to go & graft in red ball cricket to mature & fine-tune his skills.

Pakistan must bring in players like Sahibzada Farhan who has grafted & grinded in domestic cricket to earn a recall into the Intl cricket, same can be said for Salman Mirza, Hassan Nawaz, Sufiyaan Muqeem, Abbas Afridi, Ahmed Daniyal, Kamran Ghulam, Qasim Akram, Mubashir Khan, Maaz Sadaqat, Mohammad Faiq & many other performers.

Now I'm not saying all these players will make it or transition in the Intl. cricket easily or quickly, but they deserve as much opportunities as much as the "talented" damads have received. Hardworking, grafted players are superior to any talented players in the team.

The current lot are freelance t20 players. They play every other league. This route has failed.

Shadab, nawaz and saim play all leagues. Babar was part of a premium league. Nothing helped.

Even usman tariq is a leguea player and after 2 years he will be a bust.

So what you mentioned is already happening. What these guys need is first class cricket for self development.
 
I drop Agha from captain. Can give him a few more chances at 3 if you want but a guy struggling to get into the side can’t be captain. We have moved him around, dropped players desperately trying to find a position to play him in because he is captain. Shaheen for all the hate can take it, yes he might not be the bowler he once was but he’s decent.

Time to move on from fakhar. He’s 35 now and still hasn’t cemented his t20 place ever.

Babar shouldn’t be playing international cricket let alone t20s until he’s rediscovered his form in domestic cricket. He could possibly do at job at 3 in the future as he isn’t that old, but only when he rediscovers form.

Usman should be given chances top order, preferably opening to see what he’s made of. If he fails, kick him out of the squad. He hasn’t done well, but he’s also been shuffled up and down the order in harder positions. Now been made to wicketkeep on top. I think the best performer in PSL should have been given easier opportunities to bat before giving up on him. I’d open with him personally.

Saim needs to either be dropped or go down the order. You can not have a non performing opener in the side it destabilises entire team. I’d give Usman a shot at opening. There are plenty of spots middle order, you could stick him there for now where he can have a lot more leeway with the bat.

I think we have to choose between Shadab and Nawaz at some point. Can’t play both. I’d probably keep Shadab out of the team for now until Nawaz drops off. Don’t think it was a good idea including Shadab this tournament, should have just backed Nawaz. I think Shadab will eventually retake his spot anyway, but you can wait till Nawaz falls off.

Bowling is alright even if not fantastic. Usman tariq, Shaheen, Salman mirza, abrar, Abbas Afridi, Haris Rauf etc. all decent bowling options if not amazing. You can form a good enough bowling attack with them. Would move on from Faheem though, just play a specialist bowler instead at 8 which is easier to do if you aren’t trying to fit both Shadab and Nawaz into a line up.
 
For starters PCB need to spend some $$$ and arrange regular LOI series with NZ, Eng, Aus, SA and even windies


We are literally at SL/Ban level which is slightly above minnow level

Salman is a done deal. Even Shan masood would have been a better choice as captain when Pakistan did the reset post 2024 wc

He has done well down the order in odi. Thats actually hard to do. No.3 is a hard position to do well in too, we haven’t had too many successful ones. And babar is out of form. I don’t mind him fighting for his spot at 3 against others competing. He probably won’t hold onto his spot. But this current situation where he’s got his spot automatically is wrong.

We’re kind of running out of captaincy options sadly too. Not thrilled giving it to Shaheen. But can’t think of another name. Shadab is even further away from a cemented spot. But Agha isn’t just an average of underwhelming player, he’s a failing one. And you can’t have someone like that captain.
 
We needed a reset after 2021, then 2022, then 2024, and of course now.

We all know what’s gonna happen. A few months without the losers and the lobbying will start, the victimhood on social media will start, the cover drives from 2018 will be played on repeat and by the time we start the next t20 wc, it’ll be the same old same old.
 
Top order needs to be rebuilt. Saim, Agha and Babar need to be replaced.

Will need replacements for Usman Khan and Nawaz. And no the solution is not Faheem.

Farhan has literally carried this team through the tournament. It could have been a lot worse.
