I recently started to use Miswak stick. I must admit I am absolutely loving it! It is much better than traditional toothpaste.

Any Miswak user here?

Nope. I've noticed a lot of maulvi saabs have bad breath, I'd recommend mouthwash and flossing. Miswak would be good to supplement your teeth cleaning routine but shouldn't replace a toothbrush.

I have sensitive teeth and I can only tolerate Sensodyne. So, I must use it out of necessity.

I use miswak after I use Sensodyne.

I have one but have never used it. Been sitting in my cupboard for many months now. If Rasoolullah(SAW) used and recommended it then it can only be a good thing.

I can't speak for others but miswak has given me great results. I highly recommend it.

I got my miswak sticks from Amazon. Company is from Egypt.

I am sure Miswak is beneficial, but it is a 10,000 year old twig. The reason why it’s importance is emphasized is because there was no toothpaste in 7th CE Arabia.

Miswak creates a fragrance in the mouth & eliminates bad breath. Those mullahs are either not using miswak at all or don't know how to use it properly.

Have you ever tried toothpaste with miswak? I don't have stick to try out. Curious about the results.

I have never tried it. I don't think you are supposed to do that. Miswak stick has its own natural juice. It comes straight from the tree bark without any processing. It is as natural as it gets.

I agree with you 100%. My mouth feels fresh after I use it. The key is to use it for 4-5 minutes and brush everything (tongue, teeth, gum etc.).

It also depends on the quality of the miswak.

Here are some things I learned about miswak -

1) You are supposed to throw away each miswak stick after 6-7 days. Never go beyond 10 days.
2) Keep it dry and don't keep it inside toilet (like you do with toothbrush).
3) Brush every tooth independently. Also, brush gum, tongue etc.

Result depends a lot on how you preserve your miswak stick, quality of your miswak stick, and how you use your miswak stick.

& cutting is also important. Goal should be to extract maximum juice. Regarding quality, stick shouldn't be too try & you should be able to smell the fragrance. Cut it every time before usage to ensure hygiene. Do you recommend to extend stick's lifetime by soaking it into water? Or it should be disposed once it dries out?

I get rid of it after six days. It works for me.

I use one side for two days. I then use the other side for two days. I then cut off one side and use it for additional two days. Then I throw it away.

I soak it into water before I use it. It makes it soft and easy to use.

Do you recommend soaking the entire stick on 3/4th day to keep it afresh? Also, how do you cover the ends after usage? I cut them off daily.
& thanks for creating this thread & educating on the topic.

I don't soak it all day. I didn't read anything like that. I only soak it before using it just to make it soft.

I cut it after every two days.

I generally keep it in my room (in a place where there is no dust).

How the hell is a twig better than toothpaste?

you guys are just ridiculous.

Even when you use miswak, your breath stinks.

Plus a toothpaste does the job in 5 minutes. Miswak has to be used for longer periods

It is actually more than just a twig. Feel free to research about it.

Miswak Dental Ingredients
Rich in fluorine, silica, and a host of antibiotic compounds, miswak extract packs a serious punch. Miswak is obtained from the twigs of the Arak tree, although it can also come from walnut and olive trees.

Oral Care Benefits of Miswak
There are many scientists who believe that miswak extract has multiple benefits for your teeth. Miswak extract has properties that effectively fight plaque, gum disease, and even prevent any existing decay from getting worse. It also has minerals such as chloride, sodium bicarbonate and potassium to strengthen the enamel in your teeth, leaving you with a healthy mouth.

You can always use a combination of toothpaste/mouthwash and miswak (like I do). Our prophet Muhammed (PBUH) used to use miswak and it is a great sunnah to use it.

People in Middle East still use it. I have seen Sheikh Sudais (imam of Masjidul Haram) using it before leading prayer.

It actually has many natural ingredients beneficial for teeth. It has natural juice. More importantly, it is a sunnah.

Never used a miswak before.

However came across a video in Mecca or Medina where they give a miswak with the iftar boxes

Thank you for telling us about these benefits.

Can you write down the your findings so I can submit them to a scientific journal.

The amount of money saved and pollution reduced is going to be amazing.

Looking forward to reading it!

I searched miswak in the UK listerine site and I found no results?

Is this a conspiracy?

Using miswak is not a sunnah; the sunnah is to practice oral hygiene.

The Prophet (pbuh) used miswak because there was no toothpaste and mouthwash etc. in 7 CE.

Using miswak today because it is a sunnah is like riding a camel and sleeping on a bed made out of palm leaves. It serves absolutely no purpose.

You're so bitter :)))

As a doctor surely you know the health benefits of Miswak? A number of retail outlets sell this in the UK.

I use the toothpaste version, 4 X as expensive as the regular ones but its imo healthy gums and teeth. :klopp

Can you list the benefits of miswak that you cannot find in toothpaste?

Try using your search engine or is your connection slow :inti

Fair enough. I will google the following:

List of benefits in a 10,000 year old twig that you cannot find in a toothpaste in 2019.

Have you ever thought why dentists around the world don’t recommend using miswak instead of the inconvenient toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash and dental floss routine?

Why don’t the West cultivate the miswak tree and throw away other dental products?

That it because it is only widely available in South Asia, Central Asia and the Arab world. The First World doesn’t believe that 10,000 year old methods of oral hygiene are better than modern products that are made after years and dollars worth of R&D.

If Miswak was better, the West would have tried to cultivate it instead of spending money on modern products.

lol. It's on Amazon and is sold in various high street outlets, anyone can buy it. I deal with a company who has recently added this to their health range and their sales are pretty decent. Again the cost is higher to it's natural elements, similar to organic products or natural health products. The price will be higher but there is a strong market for this product, those who can afford it will buy it. You are just guessing and making up rubbish, as usual.

The cost is high because it is sold in selected places. It is cheap in Pakistan because you can find it everywhere. That is because in the West, it is imported.

There isn’t a strong market for it because it is not more beneficial than modern dental hygiene routine. You are yet to explain its exclusive benefits that you cannot find in toothpaste, and you are also yet to explain why dentists around the world don’t recommend it.

Plenty of things are cheaper in Pakistan or even in France. Cigarettes which are produced in England are cheaper accross the border in France. Again it's in the high street and yes its newish product for the health market in the UK but still doing well. It does have a lot of health benefits, trying doing some research. People who can afford it and care about their health buy it.

Who cares as long as your breath don’t stink!

You are again avoiding the question. I am not implying that miswak isn’t good for your teeth and gums. My question is what are the exclusive benefits of miswak?

Surely as a passionate advocate, you can educate me and perhaps even convince me to throw away my toothbrush and get a miswak?

I am the type of doctor who doesn’t believe in that 10,000 year old twigs and ancient treatments hold up to modern medicine. Next time you need something checked, find yourself a healer in a jungle who can treat you with herbs and leaves.

You clearly don’t need the NHS.

Its natural and the toothpaste(most miswak) is fluoride free amongst other things. You should know this as a doctor, thank God I will never need you as a patient.

So fluoride is bad for your teeth? Where did you learn this?

Also, fluoride-free toothpastes are readily available in the market. Why use a 10,000 year old twig to clean your teeth?

You must be lying or have never used miswak if you think it makesy our breath stink. PLus you have very little understanding of your body if you think the teeth are reasons for bad breath. You should regularly wash your tongue to avoid bad breath.

I tell you one thing. I personally believe that miswak made my mouth better and my teeth better.

UK Listerine site might not have listed it because miswak has little demand in UK. It has higher demand in Middle East. This is common sense.

These are not 10,000 year old twigs! These twigs come fresh from trees. I am not using a 10,000 years old fossilized twig!

No. Its 2019. I use toothbrush and toothpaste. I think if toothbrush and toothpaste existed in the age of the Prophet SAW he would have used them too instead of maswaakh.

Too much fluroride can cause dental fluorosis but in general it's fine. Some people are also allergice to fluriode. Miswak toothpaste is also free from parabens, artificial colourants, alcohol, gluten etc.

You wont understand because you dont appreciate the healthy lifestyle but here in the UK many people are changing their lives and buying products which are more natural. Bottom line it's making money, so people are buying it. You stick to your 50p toothpaste, your choice but dont act smart and suggest they are wasting theirs. I feel sorry for your patients having such a doctor.

I use Sensodyne, a product of R&D and superior to the twigs that you put in your mouth in the name of “healthy lifestyle”.

Speaking of which, if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid too much processed foods and inorganic fruits/vegetables, your fluoride intake will be moderate anyway, and you won’t need to put twigs in your mouth.

Do you also feel sorry for the patients of dentists around the world who don’t recommend miswak for healthy teeth?

It's a package of benefits, some of which I have stated. I have contacts in the health industry and this product is becoming popular. If you dont want to use it dont but you are in no position to tell others.

Its up to them what they want to do lol. Worry about your own health which must need improving. My advice get out more , do some excercise and make new friends it will help your anxiety and stress. Free medical advice for you. :ma

Your grasp of the English language never ceases to amaze me.

What am I bitter about?

I’m not sure why you are mentioning price, as if that is some indicator of benefit.

All you have to do is present some robust data.

What is it that you’re exactly trying to say?

1. That it has benefits?

Or

2. It is superior to modern methods?

“Lol...😉😏☹️😕☹️😂😝😅....lol....I believe, I’ve never, blah blah, real scholar..😂😂😂😂☺️☹️😂...”

There you go, I’ve even started your first 20 posts, so hopefully you won’t waste your time and address the actual issue at hand.

Common sense?

Ok, I’m going to give it a try.

Forgive me if I make a mistake because I’m not used to this common sense you speak off.

You used a link from a corporate organisation that was marketing a product, to highlight the benefits of miswak.

Thus, it’s likely that if miswak truly was a wonder product they would push it in other areas. However, they market it in an area there is already a demand. Where the population has already been conditioned, without proof to hold it in high regard.

The saying, selling snow to an Eskimo, comes to mind.

What is most concerning that instead of referencing a scientific paper or some robust data, you used a link from a company marketing to certain demographic as proof.

Is this the logic you use when challenging the big questions life throws at you?

Thank you for your advice, but I have some advice of my own. We both know why you are such a huge advocate of miswak even though you cannot list its exclusive benefits and why we should use it instead of toothpaste. Don't view everything from an Islamic point of view.

I never understood why people use this stick? I've used it a couple of times before and it doesn't do anything my usual toothpaste + brush combo can't do, from what I can see anyway. I'm not the most knowledgable person when it comes to density so I might be wrong. Can someone please explain to me why it's still used?

People are desperate to prove that it is better than toothpaste because the Prophet PBUH used it. What they don’t realize is that the sunnah is to clean your teeth and not to clean it with a twig. He used it because there were no toothpastes back then.

Miswak cannot compare to toothpaste + flossing + mouthwash routine. There is a reason why you will never seen dentists around the world recommend it.

Yeah I assume that's the case, looks interesting though. From the minimal research I've done on it, there seems to be a few scholarly articles on it's advantages, including it's natural juices helping with plaque buildup and certain bacterias, however nothing concrete on why it would replace a normal routine.

I haven't even mentioned religion yet you refer to it in your posts and this one too. :)))

Ex Muslims are so bitter, if you are against Miswak due to it's link with the Islamic faith, dont use it!

Forhans is the greatest toothpaste known to man. I took 8 of them with me back to Canada

Used to use it whenever I was in SA, but always got a new one and it took time to moisten, maintain and prepare the Miswak which usually took a few days, all I got was some bark parts stuck to my teeth for my troubles and I usually gave up on it after a while.

However I used to buy like 30 one Riyal miswaks for the relatives on the Pakistani side who didnt really use them either but kept them in the front pockets of their kameezes and shirts for everyone to see.

Are those that use the miswak also in favour of drinking camel urine.

Regardless of what the Hadith say, I strongly discourage it, especially with the amount of MERS case we get after trips to saudi.

I don't have access to that and I also will probably never drink it.

I would love to try out camel milk though.

I found out great things about miswak (from YouTube, Google etc.) and hence I am using it.

Genius!

As proof you provided a link to a Saudi journal and the other is an Ayurvedic journal. That’s really embarrassing.

Do you know what robust data is?

Amazing!

Care to share your reasons why?

What's wrong with camel milk? I never tried it and would love to try it. I drink a lot of milk.

Not sure what that is. You asked me for scientific studies and I provided to you.

I am seeing good results with miswak. I don't want to waste my time reading useless data.

1. Why do you prefer Camel milk over Camel urine?

2. Of course you don’t what scientific data, that much is evident. Those aren’t scientific.

3. Thank you for admitting that you won’t waste your time teasing useless data. After all that none sense about scholars etc... we finally get to the realisation that you’re merely brainwashed to an unhealthy degree.

Let us know the benefits of Camel urine when start to experiment with it.

Some people are hurt that why a guy is using Miswak. Get a life some of you. He didn't ask you to stop using toothpaste. It's his personal option. I understand why some "ex" people would like to lecture people since they are too obsessed with.......

Sooooooo obsessed.

Is it a crime to ask for his rationale?

Where do I find this life you speak off?

Camel urine along with others are fake hadith.

Mkswak is good for you but toothpaste does the job fine. I think brushing teeth is the sunnah not miswak

Another hypocrisy. 99% of the Muslims will tell you how good Miswak is for you yet they will never give up their toothbrush and paste for it. They know Miswak does not work and it is just a tool to assert that they are closer to their religion than others.

When I go to Target or Walmart, I see a lot of electric toothbrushes carrying a $100+ tag and people happily buying and using them. I am yet to see a non-desi store selling a much cheaper Miswak.

None sells it because they know it is completely useless in these times and there are far better and cheaper alternatives available.
