Stray dog menace is growing in my area.

I have got the phone number of the guy I need to call tomorrow.

Can you guys tell me what does the city corporation do when they catch stray dogs?

Kill them?

Put them in safe enclosures?

Or just sterilizes them and releases them back?

Its a problem all over India. Just too many of them and they will not let anyone walk on the street before 7 AM. Seen many people fall from their bikes because of these dog packs chasing them.

My friends dad was a Government veterinarian and he told me that they are killed after being caught. Sterilizing costs money. Safe enclosures are out of question.

These days PETA organizations are not letting the dogs get killed. Most of the times, the dogs are released back in the same area or some other unfortunate area for the people to suffer.

So they get killed or released elsewhere?

That's what I am worried about that they will release them somewhere else.

Killing is the most logical choice as long as its done humanely. Why torture the poor animal by putting them in enclosures or endangering people by releasing them elsewhere?

One day I fear I am gonna go and butcher one of these stray dogs myself and once I kill one....I could kill more.

North Indian dogs behave quite well, never faced this problem here.

What Govt these days is doing is rotating dogs every few months in various streets. You will be walking in your street and you realize that you are seeing some new dogs now and some of those old dogs that chased you are gone :))

Some people are leaving poisoned meat on the streets near dumpsters. When Government is not doing anything, people are taking it in their own hands. Old people are scared to come out of their homes during mornings and evenings (which is the best time for a walk).

Damn....

How many of the dogs that chase actually bite?

Not sure about that.

Hated Delhi dogs.

They were a menace too.

I feed a pack of 8-10 dogs at midnight and early in the morning every weekend. I am not the only one, there are so many here who take care of these stray-dogs without feeling threatened. I doubt they will do it if those dogs were a menace.

If anything, only time you see dogs making headlines is Delhi is when that mysterious serial-killer murders poor puppies. :(

Damn....

Most do not bite. They just want you out of their territory.

Its not the biting that is a problem, but the accidents that happen when people fall of their bikes or old people fall down on the concrete road.
From my experience, there will be a couple of dogs out of every dozen that actually do bite. Probably to show off to the females. :misbah
Its always the males that are the biting ones. Female dogs rarely bite.

sterilize them more often than that.although it doesnt do zilch to stop this menace.this whole sterlization process is poorly managed, not much resources and thought is put into the process and usually half hearted attempts with no apparent results.

You've just provided the perfect reasons as to why stray dogs should be captured and put down, especially in 3rd world countries like India & Pakistan. Quite apart from the risk of rabies from stray dogs bites, the risks of infections leading to severe health issues, including death, in itself should be sufficient reason not to take chances.

So by feeding stray dogs in such circumstances, you are actually risking the lives of others. Without you realising it, your actions could indirectly result in the death of some poor innocent soul!

@ sensible-indian-fan Take note!

Isnt it a little bit unfair for the animals ? . Since we are strong and have cognitive brains. We put down everything against us poor animals in the wild or on the streets dont stand a chance to survive.

It is actually not that difficult to identify aggressive dogs and put them down. But a lot of people who feel uncomfortable around animals don't want any in the street, which is very unreasonable.

Hard to tell which is barker and which is a biter until you experience it.

All animal lovers, if they do care about stray dogs, they need to keep them in their homes or build shelters for those dogs.

I love wild animals and we should leave them alone in wild. But stray dogs are a big menace in the society. They are pests and do nothing for people other than biting and chasing bikes and old people. If someone loves them too much, they should take those dogs to their home.

Not at all unreasonable to expect stray dogs to be caught.

Stray dogs have killed a lot of kids.

They are a risk.

9 stray dogs could be fine but 1 bad apple can cause great damage.

Dogs in a group behave differently compared to when they are alone.

Plus what if some dog gets infected or worse goes MAD?

Its a ticking time bomb.

If people love them, they could take them in their home.

Most practical approach would be to humanely kill these animals.

They kill them. They do it by tying a cord around their neck and strangling them to death.

Plus when these dogs have puppies, they are more aggressive around that time.

Then these puppies grow and add to the menace.

Stray Dogs are menace in Delhi. No one is bothering to do anything about. There are a lot of dog biting case in my area. Most of their targets are poor daily workers when they come early in the morning.

When people talk about dog bites...what is the extent?

They bite once and leave...or they keep biting you all over and maul you?

Not talking about kids (whom dogs can maul) but adults.

They bite really hard. My aunt recently got bitten had deep puncture wounds just below the knee. These dogs gets scared after hearing screams from the victim and leave soon.

Oh dear lord....

God please forgive me for doing this but gotta make the call.

Predators like cats or dogs are invasive species which often feed on birds, squirrels and other smaller animals. There is nothing wrong with killing them, they are not part of the ecosystem, men introduced them in it.

Not related to stray dogs, but last year when was in Delhi, was standing outside my house in the colony, when a man was taking his dog for a walk, as they passed us, the dog snarled at me and made a move for my ankle.

I managed to move out of harm's way, but slapped the owner twice- not the dog's fault that its owner dont take care of it and the dog was excited.

Said to the owner- choice is yours, accept the slaps or lets go the station to make a complain, I will make a complain against oyur dog and petition for it to be put down as is a menace.

Chap moved on giving me evil eyes- guess his pet was more important to him than his esteem

Thanks for the immensely satisfying post. Got pleasure visualizing the idiot dog owner getting slapped.

I dislike the approach but they get killed as we already know how it was done in Kerala.I hate the good-bad apple theory in that case religion, nationalism all such things coz several deaths as well tbh much more than that by bites of dogs, should we put down religion or nationalism?

The place where i grew up in Chennai ,there was this old guy who used to feed them early morning, the guy was poor as well but he always fed them and never during all these years did the dogs ever cause issues.

But there have defn been cases where dogs have bitten kids but lets remember ISIS,American-NATO armies have probably killed 100 times the same number of children.

How?

Cities afflicted by stray menace should eliminate their food source. Open dustbins etc.

The basically killed all the strays because of public demand.

Incidentally, the killing manner I described in my earlier post was the one I saw in Kerala when some corporation guys were killing a stray dog. It is how I saw them kill it.

Yes there was an outrage as well but all Keralites were like if you like them so much take them to your state adopt them blah blah.

Hard to tell which is barker and which is a biter until you experience it.

Not hard at all. If a dog bites you for no reason, get it tagged, inform the authorities and they will take care of it. At most, you will will have 5 problem dogs out of 100. But killing them all is insanity.

I was bitten by a dog for no reason, and it was then I developed extreme hatred for this filthy creature. Love to aim at their head with a small stone and see them running for cover with the tail between their legs.

I share your hatred.

Hate stray dogs that bark at people, chase them.

Hate dog owners who don't put leash on their dogs.

Though I feel bad when I see a hungry or overly scared stray dog.

I was bitten by a dog in my village when i was a kid but don't know why i still don't hate them but i also don't love them. I guess i am just neutral when it comes to dogs.

The only animal i really hate are pigs specially wild boar because they destroy our crops every year and we suffer big lose because of them but it's really hard to control them they grow in number so fast and now there are like thousands of them living in the forest and mountains area of my village waiting for the dark every day to attack the fields of poor farmers. When i was a kid there were only a few of them and now there hundreds and thousands of them. There have been cases of these wild boars attacking farmer in my village and they are really deadly when they are in crazy mood.

Dogs, here in MP, are rather meek creatures - so much so that even little kids try to toy with them even when they are in groups.

Seems like it's a big problem in South. My advice would be to Kill'em all(in diabolical tone) :))

Yes but Madrasis are a meek bunch ;-)

The last time I visited Pune with my friends, my taxi wallah asked us where we were from.. I said TN. The guy exclaimed "danger hai"..

We were left wondering why the guy said like that. So make your mind already. Whether meek or dangerous?

maybe your taxi wallah was from Kerala- I have found the southern you go in India meeker they get.

Nah..He was a northie..That's quite an interesting theory.

Anyway, we are digressing from the topic. The dogs in north india are clearly more civilized than their south indian counterparts. I guess there is a lesson to be learnt here.

We are digressing but the meeker can also be interpreted as cultured. Back in the 80s/90s there was a saying culture of Delhi is agriculture.

I dont think dogs in North India are more civilized, rather they clearly know their place in the hierarchy and where they stand ;-)

I've to admit, you got me there. It is indeed hard to catch up with Delhi in many statistics whether people like to admit or not.

Anyway, all this talk about the macho-ness of different states reminds me of this huff post article I saw a few days back. It's funny as long as you don't take offence to the joke.

huh, Not many dog owners here I guess. Dogs are the single most loving creatures, pet dogs that is.

Dogs are terriorial, so stray dogs attack when people cross when they think they are walking into their area....not sure what the humane solution is here..

How practical is the idea that a colony as a whole somehow come up with a way to take care of the dogs..and dogs also will welcome the people in colony into their group

Made the call today.

They won't catch and take away the dogs but will sterilize them and release them back in the same area.

That's the law.

Apparently sterilizing the dogs makes them meek and less prone to barking or chasing or biting.

Wild Boar tastes nice . you can no longer hunt them in India. but you can get them from farms now.

Dont you guys have a animal rescue shelters in tamilnadu ? why didnt you call them instead ?

Be my guest come to my village and hunt as many as you want for free we will even pay you from pocket for killing them.

Many dogs and puppies in our area.

Population growth.

They are snarling and barking and look pretty dangerous.

Sterilizing them is needed before they harm someone which I think is a matter of time.

I've worked with street dogs in India and also shelter dogs in the US for more than a decade.

What is seen as aggression in street dogs is almost always fear of being hit or beaten. The average street dog you see in India is probably one out of 10 that has survived it's siblings. This dog has seen its siblings die in horrifying ways - run over and crushed, drowned (in monsoons), frozen to death (winters), starved to death (all the time).

For this reason, having being brutalized by street life, the vast majority of street dogs are in fact not confrontational and will run away if given the chance (ie not cornered).

Also, contrary to perception, most dogs do not bark 80-90% of the of the time, and when they bark the majority of the time it is not aggression, but a means of communication, or warning or the result of fear.

All animal lovers, if they do care about stray dogs, they need to keep them in their homes or build shelters for those dogs.
...............

Even though some of us are doing precisely that, this is utterly false logic. If you care about XYZ so much why don't you do all of XYZ? The reverse would be, if you love humanity so much, why don't you start adopting beggars? If you love cricket so much why don't you give up your day job and play it all day long forever?

People can show caring without having to qualify to some externally imposed metric.

...............
Its a ticking time bomb.

....

That it is- a humane solution needs to be found, and that means more investment in sterilization programs. But I fear that unless we do something soon, a lot of people will start to actively seek violent solutions. So yes in essence I agree that the number of dogs on our streets is increasing and we need to think about how to tackle the problem. I do believe that violence and brutal killing will not help.

I was bitten by a dog for no reason, and it was then I developed extreme hatred for this filthy creature. Love to aim at their head with a small stone and see them running for cover with the tail between their legs.

Once can understand you fear, but your hatred makes you a part of the problem. In fact behaviour like yours is responsible for some of the problem because, forget a dog, throw a stone at anyone a few times and they will all start to react violently. You were bitten "for no reason" by one dog, so you take it out and get vicious pleasure by tormenting other dogs. That's as absurd as saying (since this is a cricket forum) that a left arm seamer cost my team a key game, now I hate all left arm seamers with a passion.

And to answer OP's question- the corporation is supposed to catch the dogs, sterilize them and then releases them in the same area. Often the last part does not work as well, government being government, so often they are released in other areas.

Or maybe the "alleged" meeker or submissive South Indian body language gives them the impression that they are the ones in charge. How dogs react to your presence has a lot to do with the energy you feed them.

Isn't killing stray dogs illegal in India? Remember reading about it somewhere.

People need to do something about it.just mix up poison with some spare non veg food and throw it on the streets.

Problem solved.

False logic from you.

Beggars don't bite you when you walk on streets. All they do is ask for money. Either you give them or you don't. Dog's don't ask your persmission before they bite.
I love Cricket. But if I don't play it, nobody is going to bite me or bully me into playing.

You see, there are Cats, Squirrels, Crows, Birds etc on streets. We don't want them to be killed. They do not attack you when you are walking on the road or harass old people and bite them.

Do not get blinded by your love for Dogs. Yes, Dogs are helpful in gaurding your home and assist police in solving crimes. But a stray dog on the street harassing people has no place in the society. If someone loves them so much, keep them leashed at home and feed them. Spare the regular citizens from their unpredictable behavior.

Brilliant reply to a very Incredibly Stupid Post.

Comparing the menace of street dogs with beggars and playing Cricket. Lmao. These dog lovers are just blinded and it's futile to make sense or talk logic with them.

Stray dogs are a pest and a nuisance created by humans. They often feed on birds and fight with domestic animals. So they should be treated like any other pest and put down. If you release them after sterilizing them, the problem is still there for next 10-20 years.

Just euthanize them and then export the meat to China, it should boost Indian economy.

News is that there is an ongoing dog meat festival in China right now.

It will be wonderful if we could export all these dogs in India to China who can feast on them, thus helping India get rid of its problem. Win win situation for both countries.

I hardly think either of you two gents got the substance of my post. However at least the one below tries to address the debate.

False logic from you.

The equivalence is appropriate because it was used to show the ludicrousness of the original proposition- you cannot use one example to make a generalisation.

With this one, I can only say - I wish you best of luck sir.

There was a mass culling in Karachi few years ago I remember

Karachi's Stray Dog Issue

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday directed all six district municipal corporations in Karachi to make immediate arrangements about detention and control of stray dogs.

It also asked the provincial government to constitute a task force to help out the DMCs.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar ordered the provincial health secretary to ensure that there must be no shortage of anti-rabies vaccine in all 29 districts of Sindh for treatment of dog-bite victims.

It also ordered the secretaries of the health and local government departments to expedite a proposed project to be launched in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation to retain dogs and release them after sterilisation and vaccination.

At the outset, health secretary Saeed Awan submitted a report in compliance with an earlier order on a petition about stray dogs and shortage of anti-rabies vaccines (ARV) at all government-run hospitals in the province.

He submitted that around 16,359 ARV were available in 313 hospitals including district health offices in the province.

Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Saif-ur-Rehman submitted that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation was looking after 14 hospitals, out of which four were general hospital — Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Sarfaraz Rafiqui Shaheed Hospital, Gazdarabad Hospital and Landhi Medical Complex — and anti-rabies vaccine was available there.

He said that the vaccines had been arranged by the KMC through its own funds and no financial assistance was provided by the LG department. He assured the bench that in future they would arrange vaccines as per requirement.

LG secretary Roshan Ali Shaikh was also in attendance. He submitted that his department had issued a letter last month asking the Karachi mayor, DMCs, town officers and town committees of the province to launch an effective and well-coordinated campaign to check dog-bite cases and culling of stray dogs.

The municipal commissioners of all the six DMCs of the provincial metropolis were also present in court and filed their comments.

They were of the view that they had already made efforts for culling of stray dogs.

In the last hearing, the DMCs expressed their helplessness to detain and control stray dogs due to a financial crunch.

However, the health secretary informed the bench that South, West, Korangi, Central and Malir DMCs had sent their requisitions for funds, whereas the municipal commissioner of DMC East submitted that he would send the requisition on Tuesday to the office of the LG secretary for consideration.

The bench observed that huge funds were not involved in launching a campaign against stray dogs, but an effort can be made with some limited resources if it was done willingly.

It directed all the municipal commissioners and the representatives of the DMCs to arrange vehicles and deploy staff in their areas to immediately handle the situation so that public at large may be saved form dog-bite incidents.

The court sought specific reports in the next hearing.

The bench also directed the LG secretary to constitute a task force to handle the situation and wherever required the task force — to be constituted by the provincial government — would help the DMCs.

The LG secretary also submitted that a project — street dog population control and fight against rabies — had been launched with the help of the Society for the Protection of Animal Rights.

He further said that several steps had been taken to launch the project and a model centre for TNR (trap, neuter and release) had been constructed in Ibrahim Hyderi in collaboration with the Indus Hospital to retain dogs for their sterilisation, vaccination and release.

He stated that the PC-I of the project had still not been prepared, adding that PC-I would be prepared within a week and be submitted to the planning and development department for approval.

The bench directed the health and LG secretaries to submit a progress report on Nov 7 and observed that since the matter was of grave importance they were also directed to expedite the proposed project and file a report stating when this project would be implemented in its letter and spirit.

A petition filed by Advocate Tariq Mansoor said that dog-bites incidents had been on the rise due to the failure of the provincial and local administrations in tackling the situation as stray dogs had not been dealt with. He also said in the petition that anti-rabies vaccines were not available at government-run hospitals.

CNG kits, cylinder fitness authority

The same bench on Tuesday directed the provincial authorities to expedite the process regarding the proposed draft bill of the Sindh CNG Kit & Cylinder Fitness Authority and sought a positive progress report till Nov 11.

Hearing a number of petitions about use of substandard CNG kits and cylinders in commercial vehicles as well as school vans, the bench also issued a show-cause notice to the chief inspector, explosives over his absence despite service of a notice.

Regarding the proposed legislation, the additional advocate general (AAG) submitted that the draft was being vetted by the law department.

The bench observed that the issue was very important but the provincial government was not giving it priority.

It directed the AAG to communicate to the chief secretary to expedite the process and a positive progress report should be submitted at the next hearing.

If you see videos of stray dogs being put down, you will feel bad (Sometimes even pups are injected with poison while they are whining or trying play)...

But then again, if you see videos of rabies victims, close to death, or of a child mauled by dogs, you would happily want stray dogs to be put down

I am not easily fazed by gory videos, but the single most disturbing and painful I have seen/heard in my life is that of an Indian 5 year old boy close to death after being mauled by a pack of dogs.

I could not sleep peacefully for a few nights after that , even more so as the father of a 5 year old....

I love animals and that includes dogs.

However, if any animal is rabid, that animal should be put down. No exception.
