Does India deserve the number 1 ranking in all 3 formats?

India has achieved points in cricket so swiftly it's no surprise how they achieved this ranking in such a short time.

As per my observation, Pakistan should have been on top in ODIs due to their good performances in the last few years. Australia, without any doubt number 1 in Tests they recently won the Ashes and Test championship and than India in T20Is.

Test Cricket- Yes, most consistent team in last 2 WTC cycle, 4 years of finishing in top 2 and qualifying for WTC Final. This format rewards consistency.

ODI Cricket- No, until they win the world cup or atleast reach the final. Asia Cup win is fine but we lost to BD, Aus, SA and NZ in last 2 years in this format ( albeit in a 3 match series)

T20- No, not our best format but somehow played with great consistency in all T20 bilaterals. But messed up big time in tournaments.
 
Congratulations to Team India, very well deserved across formats. Atleast that will stop the padosis harping about their No.1 ODI rank for a while!

But don’t think we care particularly about the ranking. What’s the point of these no.1 rankings if you are gonna lose major tournament finals?
 
Yes ICC should investigate this matter that how can India become no. 1 in all formats . :)
 
India achieved these rankings before separately many times. First time everything together. So that is an unique feat for them. I am pretty sure that is not their focus. They didn't send full strength side to achieve that ranking. Their focus is more on preparing the bench for the world cup. Same with most teams. Test ranking is the only one that i can take seriously.
 
Well deserved by India, they've been really good in all formats. Let's see of they can live up to the favourites tag

Without ICC trophy this ranking is not matter. Indian fan's need ICC trophy now .If we win 2023 world cup then we rightly deserved nom 1 team

Ranking is something to be celebrated. It shows the best team in the current situation. But yes ICC trophy is the main target.

South Africa and Australia were the top 2 teams in the early 2000s, but Australia was famous due to the ICC trophies. Still one should celebrate top rank

Ranking shows Namibia's JJ Smit is a better T-20 all-rounder than Rashid Khan. Do you agree with that assessment?
 
They always choke when it matters most which shows rankings are useless

Lost both WTC finals comprehensively against Australia and New Zealand. Still number 1 in tests?

Lost t20 WC semi-final against England by 10 wickets. Still number 1 in t20?

Lost 2019 WC semi-final vs New Zealand and 2017 CT Final vs Pakistan. Still number 1 in ODI?

Their icons are like that as well.

Virat Kohli was a beast in ODI from 2014 to 2019 but in the 3 most important ODI matches during this time

2015 WC semi-final vs Australia
2017 CT final vs Pakistan
2019 WC semi-final vs New Zealand

He scored single digits in all 3 matches and India lost all 3.
All 3 were run-chases. Yeh hai World Cricket ka CHASE MASTER lol

Because T20I includes all t20 cricket played internationally by minnows. ICC has given t20 international status to assoicate and affiliate teams. Now if a player is doing well consisstently, than yes his rank will be higher.

As for allrounder, Rashid khan isnt that good with the bat.

Its not like JJ smit is ranked higher as a bowler, he is ranked higher as an allrounder
 
Let’s just call it what it is. This is a tribute to Bharat having genuinely developed their cricket from the grassroots level up that apart from minors hiccups here or there, they’re generally among the top sides across formats on a consistent basis.

Trophies are important.
However maintaining consistency is a show of how healthy the systems are.

This consistency is not dependent on a few exceptional cricketers. This has been achieved despite Pant and Bumrah being out of the team for months. With Virat not being at his best. The youngsters that have joined this system like Gill, Krishan, Suryakumar do not look out of place by the international pressure. The lights are never too bright for them.

For me India deserve Number 1 in ODI
in test Australia deserve Number 1
in t20 England deserve Number 1 👍
 
No.1 is the one who wins the ODI World Cup.

Or the T20 World Cup.

Test rankings are pretty consistent and they do indicate which team is the best Test playing nation currently.

Not necessarily lol T20 world cup that was won by Australia in 2021 was farce. THey were one of the worst team coming into the world cup. Won 5 or 6 tosses in a row. Chased down in easier batting conditions. In 2022 they couldn't even get to semi final in their own home turf.

India lost in South Africa and drew in England also. They also lost in New Zealand.

Are you implying India are undisputed #1 in Test?

Focus on recent performance.

Aussies are #1 based on recent performances. They won the WTC.

They have the best Test team in the world right now. India have declined.

When you write this type of post, you start to sound like Alex Jones.

Give credit where it is due. Aussies reached final by beating a strong Pakistan and then defeated New Zealand (team that beat red hot England).
 
India, Australia and England will always be the premier cricket teams in all formats. New Zealand will be knocking on the door and Pakistan is not one of the big boys.

It doesn’t matter what the rankings say.

Dew played a major factor. They came into the tournament after 3 or 4 T20 series loss back to back. They also got canned when they fielded first against ENgland. In his own words Aaron Finch admitted they were lucky with the toss.
 
To be honest NO. Because they are not as good as England in T20s and not as lethal as Australia in Tests. In ODIs well deserved

What recent performacne lol India vs Australia series happened onlyfew months before the WTC final. One off match don't make them the best. The are equal at best. Test series win is way way harder than one off test win.
 
Australia was were begging for mercy against England in the last 3 tests lol Rain saved them in one test. Suddenly they are the BEST I don't think they are better than England let alone INdia currently.

How lethal is Australia? They lost in India, in Australia. Yes if you say they are better than Indian team in England condition ( like New Zealand or even England majorly). They are not so great outside their comfort zone

It depends on conditions. In certain conditions they were found wanting. India beat England 4 T20 series in a row. They played full strength teams against India each time. T20 nobody is no.1 no.2. Same England which was favorite in 2021 as well got owned by NZ. In a T20 series i back India to beat England. One-off encounter could go either way depending on the toss.

I feel india is legit the number 1 test side. I will give them that. That wtc final they really went in there with zero prep plus they also beat aus at home and away.


In odi I am not sure. I feel we are number 1 and them india and Australia

But the latest drubbing in Asia cup probably tilted it in India's favour.


In t20 india for sure aren't the number 1 side. Maybe 3rd or 4th max. England and pakistam are the best t20 sides. Aus 3rd and then india.

Show me one person who sais that? People don't rave about India attack despite being a very good attack is due to the lack of 145+ bowlers in their pipeline. When people talk about fast bowlers, pace, bounce and intimidation factor is what they resonate with.

No point in being number 1 if you can't win the title though.
 
it is a joke that it is in England every time. plus over rate penalties are disproportionate too. And teams are playing unequal number of matches. not the same opposition either. For instance, this time South Africa is not playing Australia or England. That's ridiculously easy draw for them.

So overall it is a heavily flawed concept.
 
According to me NO 1 Team is that team that holds the No 1 Spot for nearly 3 years and wins WC ODI , Champions Trophy and WCT20 consequetively
 
ICC rankings are deeply flawed. Bcoz most top tier teams except Pakistan do not play their full strength teams in most bilateral ODI & T20 series
 
Tests yeah. In ODIs and T20Is don't care about rankings but in my opinion we aren't the best.

In ODIs, England and Australia are better, maybe even NZ and SA.
In ODIs, England and Pakistan are better, maybe NZ.

Iit is not about the ranking. It is about categorical claim that So and so team is the best without due analysis. I said in T20 nobody is the absolute best. Anybody can beat anybody on a given day. In ODIs again if you factor in multiple conditions the team combinaton of each team dictates their fortunes. On an absolute road where there is no support for spinners England is likely to dominate. On a sporting surface, true wicket with a bit for every bowler. i back India.

These rankings don't mean anything, these ranking will only have value if every team plays same amount of games with each other home and away just like how the footbal Premier league table is in uk

Who cares about these rankings, baring the Indian team, anyway? This team keeps accumulating easy points by winning bilaterals and then in the tournaments that matter, they loose. 10 years back these rankings still mattered but with most players worldwide focused more on leagues and tournaments, anyway don't play bilateral much. And even when they play, they are more or less auditioning for some league somewhere.

That laughable Indian T20 side - it took a really good knock by Kohli for us to best even a side like Pakistan. What chance did we have against England?

The ironic thing is folks won't even rate bowlers like Bhuvaneshwar, Arshdeep, Harshal on this forum - calling them trundlers and what not.

But somehow India becomes favourites when we play with them and chokers when we don't win with the same bowlers .

Also, in the 2019 World Cup, our dumb lot played with only 2 pacers + Pandya and instead of picking the extra fast bowler in the squad.

Not to mention picking DK, Pant(without grooming him) and Dhoni in one lineup for the semis.
 
Ranking means nothing if there is no ICC trophy coming in. You guys were ranked 1, yet finished as #4 in the recent Asia Cup, even below a weakened SL/BD team. Does that mean you guys were a terrible team prior to the Asia cup. Ind achieved it by winning games. ICC didn't just gift it to IND

India's major weakness gets exposed in crucial matches. That is the best way to get to India. Inflict a top order collapse. Rest will take care of itself. India should find a way to counter it like promoting a couple MO guys up the order and using top order down the order. White ball swings for 6 or 7 overs. After that guys like Rohit/Kohli can hunt down these small totals easily

Indian fans (most of them atleast) have stopped caring about these rankings a long long time ago. I don't think they even discuss or talk about these in the dressing rooms as well.

Test rankings used to matter a lot before 2019 due to the mace and there not being any other way to decide the best Test side in the world but after the introduction of WTC, even that has become irrelevant.
 
Test is the only ranking that is somewhat accurate since all teams play their strongest teams in this format. No mediocre team can fluke to victory in test cricket and become No#1. Its a hard grind.

ODIs have started losing relevance apart from ODI WC. Top teams do not play their strongest teams in bilateral while mid level teams has no option but to play their strongest teams to avoid embarrassment. Hence these rankings can be deceiving.

T20s No.1 is a joke. There is no clear No.1 in this format due to volatile nature of the format and non seriousness of teams to take bilateral T20s seriously. The T20 rankings should be abolished and only WT20 is a true indicator of champions every two years.

I too agree with this assessment. Many top teams follow rotation policy in ODI's unless its major ICC event. T20's is mostly for trying out fresh talent unless its WC.
 
how they get senseless ratings from ICC no wonder why they are number 1 in all three formats.
 
Rankings for me only mean a lot in Test cricket. It means jack in LOI. The only thing that matters in LOI are trophies.
 
ICC favoring the Indian team is nothing new. Their players can grab the top spot after playing just a few games. Look at the Ravi Biahnoi ranking. He was nowhere near that number 3 slot until he played against South Africa and he goes straight to number 3 overtaking the bowlers like Tabriz Shamsi and mujeeb ur rehman type bowlers who are far more consistant. These rankings are right TBH.
