Well as you can see from the current match, we must have the worst tail in the world. It is worse than minnow level tails. What can be done to improve our tail?

From the top 9 Test sides, yes.

Shows a lack of willingness to practice their batting. Bilal Asif is the worst culprit given he's supposedly an allrounder. The #8 should at least average 20.

This theory espoused by some that we can rely on our lower-order to bail us out in South Africa against Steyn and co looks nonsense given these guys can't even handle NZ spinners in UAE.

Bilal Asif - Trash.
Yasir - Regressed alarmingly
Hasan - Absolutely trash.
Abbas - okay number 11.

Can't play with these four when we are also carrying two passengers in the top and one in the middle. Babar is too low at six, it's just not the right place for him anymore.

At home ,we finally got best ever tail (batting). We now have 11 batsmen in the playing XI at home.

Theyr decent doesn’t help when Sarfraz runs half of them out!

No doubt it’s been since 10 years
In odis shadab Faheem help us a bit

If you're expecting miracles from a tail consisting of Yasir, Bilal, Hasan and Shaheen, you are a really optimistic person.

No one is expecting these 4 to bail us out in South Africa, it's Shadab, Faheem and Amir who are capable with the bat and have already shown that in Ireland and England.

Those two need to do their primary jobs first with the ball.

South Africa's pacers are better than anyone England and Ireland have. The idea our lower order will take us from 100-5 to 250 is a fantasy.

Amir did his primary job with the ball, Shadab also bowled like any other good spinner would have in those conditions.

What makes you say they won't, now?

Also, South African pacers are just marginally better than Anderson, Broad, Woakes etc at their home.

Shadab gives one bad ball per over. He doesn't have the control needed to be relied on as our sole spinner outside Asia which is a result of how little FC cricket he's played.

Yasir Shah outside subcontinent isn't effective either.

I think India has worst tail in world. Ours can't even go in double digit semi-regularly.

IND's tail is poor indeed, but it starts from No. 9, considering Ashwin will bat at 8 in Adelaide later today. PAK's tail starts from 7 ...........

Its unbelievable really , that Pakistan in so many years have not improved there tail. Yasir Shah is playing only Test , still in free time cannot improve his batting. He should be averaging at least 20 runs.

India showed the advantage of a good tail which has given them a fighting chance now.

You guys pay far too much attention what Junaids has to say about tail contributing runs. There are bigger issues like 2 openers not performing etc. ahead of Saffer tour. Make sure the batsmen make runs first.

We seem to have the worst #8 and a pretty poor #7 at the moment. That's costing us a lot more than our poor tail. Let's not even talk about our openers' recent contributions, or lack thereof...

Sad, it actually got quite good as well with Amir and Hasan in form. Hasan has become a mug with the bat.

Actually one of the deciding factors in our 2-2 England draw was that our tail did wag.

Same thing in Australia iirc when Asad was playing that dream innings, tail wagged. Between Wabster, Amir and Yasir, 111 runs were scored getting us to 450 along with Asad's 137 primarily.

BUT the key in that chase was that one of the openers (Azhar) contributed, as well as one of the middle order guys.

Right now neither the tail is wagging nor openers contributing.

I'm not as concerned about the tail as I am about the openers. I know once Amir is back, he can bat, and if Hasan and Yasir go work on their batting again they will be able to contribute, they have shown it in the past. Shaheen I'm def not worried about with the bat, he's still making his way with the ball.

Currently it’s awful And this coming from mickey Arthur it’s a surprise

In no way ever going forward there should be pretty much 4 number 11s Apart from world beaters like yasir who make the team on bowling alone the others should be judged not only on bowling capability but the ability to bat too

Pakistan would’ve won the first test and the series if we had 8/9 who could handle the bat and an extra 60 runs here would’ve put Pakistan in a much better situation than they are in now

Yasir Shah 8
Usman Shinwari 9
Junaid Khan 10
Mohammad Abbas 11

Now that's what you call a tail - 4 number 11s.

This is the reason way fake tailenders like ashraf shadab are making a living.

It is not a good tail but I do not know much about other tails. Probably not the worse tail in the world.

I'm more worried about our other batters than the tailenders. Lol also the tailenders aren't exactly setting the world alight with the ball.

I look at the likes of Shami, Ishant, Robinson etc and then I look at Abbas, Shaheen etc.

Our tailenders seem to be making no effort at all to improve their batting.

Abbass is and will always be a number 11.

I really get upset over Shaheen’s zero improvement in batting. A world class player should set and follow high standards and Shaheen needs to be put that in his long wide head.

Even the younger guys like Nasim, Hasnain etc look clueless with the bat.

Lol these guys have not delivered anything exceptional in their primary discipline i.e. bowling even though they have been part of the circuit for a good 3 years now, you expect them to bat?

Yes. We have the worst tail, openers and middle order in Cricket.

Pakistan tail always had potential but never worked on it.
Even someone like Wasim Akram had average of 22. 3 in Test which is pretty low considering the potential he had with the bat

Saqlain averages 14.5 in tests , which is again low .

Umar Gul , Md Sami , etc also had potential with bat , but never justified that. The whole culture is not to work on batting skills.

You worry about tail when your top order is working fine , your middle order is performing well and your lower middle order is doing decent contributions.

Hasan Ali is the rare exception.
Rest of the tail bats as if they are playing cricket reserved for the mentally challenged.

You can do something if the coaches actually care. For a start buddy up players with talienders and get them to bat an hr a day. For example you could buddy up a tailender like Imran Butt with a batsman like Babar

Hasan Ali is a hitter but he does have potential to be a solid No.8 batter whereas the rest aren't great. Nauman Ali has shown ability in limited test appearance. The rest aren't good enough, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Abbas are terrible.

It was actually pretty good in the Test series against SA.
Hasan at 8
Yasir at 9
Nauman at 10
Shaheen at 11

Now with 3 frontline pace strategy, Abbas has come in for one of the spinners and our 10 and 11 can't simply hang on.

Of the pacers, I have only seen Musa and Shinwari(recently) have shown some ability with the bat.
Hasan, Nauman and Yasir to be fair are pretty decent and can hang along if given the right message to play(their natural game) rather than just blocking every delivery. Hasan and Yasir have both looked so confused while batting since SA test series. When there is a batter batting alongside them, they just go into the shell and only start playing their shots once it's only tail.

Back in 2013-14, we had a tail of Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan, Rahat Ali, Mohammad Irfan and Imran Khan. That was probably one of the worst tails I have ever seen.

pakistans tail starts at numbers 1 and 2 with Abid and butt.

If only the top and middle order did their job and then how the tail plays wouldn't be a concern. It shouldn't be a concern.

Pakistan definitely does not have the worst tail in cricket. Despite recent heroics, Indian tail is comfortably worse

Nauman Ali can definitely bat, just got a good one today. And Hasan can be relied upon for a quick fire 20 to 25 runs more often than not. Shaheen has worked hard on his batting but still needs a bit more work. Abbas genuinely cannot bat but I don’t think he’s going to be playing every Test for us anyway from now on.

Nauman got a good one and Hasan got run out. Usually a decent tail but as coaches often say, in test cricket one should never have to worry about the tail batting if the openers and middle order do their jobs.

Abbas genuinely has a pretty solid defensive technique. He's the quintessential night watchman, imo. Neither over nor under qualified for the role.

Our tail is not too bad to be honest. Hassan and Nauman are pretty handy with the bat, Yasir has a Test century in Australia (which of course was a fluke, but he still averages 25-26 balls per innings which is not bad for a tailender).

Shaheen and Abbas are quite hopeless, but what do you expect from #10 and #11? The likes of Broad, Anderson, Hazlewood, Ishant aren't Bradman either.

We have good batting depth in Tests, so certainly not the worst tail. White-ball cricket is a different story.

Indian tail isn’t the best definitely but also not the worst considering that they played under pressure and scored in Australia along with Pujara and Pant and again in England in 2nd test.
Only twice, have they got bundled out for scores below 100 and on those days it seemed we have a long tail but otherwise they are ok. Against other teams would survive but against the Anderson and Robinson and seaming conditions they will not survive. Can’t fault them as even the middle order didn’t survive

Not any more!

Not any more!

Sajid, nauman and hasan are test number 9s

shaheen and naseem are 10s and 11s.

Anyone thinking any of these guys are good enough to be batting 7 or 8 in test cricket are seriously deluded.

Sajid Khan who is batting at number 7 in the 3rd Test has a first class batting average of 17.

Recipe for disaster.

Never understand on what basis he comes out before Nauman?

Can they take a leaf out of eng book nope they are proper tailenders 4 no.11's

Naseem Shah is like Chris Martin. He needs to improve his batting.

Nauman, Shaheen, and Hasan can bat. So, not the worst tail.

Tail played as badly as any Indian tail in recent years.
Think they did under-perform though.
Sajid and Nauman looked competent with the bat (Sajid never a number 7 though).
Hasan Ali has shown talent in limited overs but did not apply himself here.
Shaheen a number 11 but not the worst batsman
Naseem just can't bat looks very exciting with the ball.
Pakistan need a batting all-rounder at 7 (Faheem and Shadab the only ones i know but guessing there may be others).

When Babar was dismissed Pakistan was 6 down with 33 overs left.

All teams will try to save the game if less than 2 hrs of cricket is left with 4 wickets in hand, but here everyone simply gave up.

I think they under performed due to thier batting position.
Nawaz,Shadab,Fahim can bat at 7

You are not going to survive 33 overs against australia attack with the ball spinning and reversing.

They did not try , they tried to score instead of scoring that is the problem. There is no issue in losing after you try.

If the top order couldn't survive how do you expect the lower order batters to survive.

Our best tail can be
7.Nawaz 8.Faheem 9.Shadab10.Hasan11.Shaheen
But unfortunately these players fail in their primary job

The way the team is lined up it seems like we play a team not give the opposition too much of a tough time.

Just top of my head we could have 3-4 changes to the side and make it more attacking.

In tests, yes. But it can be avoided with proper selections. Fahim, Yasir, Zafar, Shaheen, Hasan/Naseem in Asia.

And middle order as well (even though 2-1 is very satisfying). First they played Saud Shakeel (where management has no idea where to use him) and then they dropped him today for Asif Ali. So your number 5,6,7 are pretty much the same type and known for slogging, they are good for last 4-5 overs (like how Khushdil played the other day) but they cannot build an inning.
They could have tried M.Haris in place of Ifti/Khushdil, how is a more complete batter than these 3 and has a good strike rate.

Zahid Mehmood and Mohammad Ali.

2 more to the list.

Rabbits in headlights.

Pakistan needs to stop throwing in bunnies otherwise we are gonna keep seeing collapses and going to keep losing tests we should win

Start picking fc players who primarily are good with the ball first and foremost but can hold a bat

An example from the past would be the likes of hasan ali, wahab, yasir shah who could get you 20-30 runs on a good day

Unless your a superstar bowler you need to show some skill with the bat and be able to bat a little

You just cant carry 3-4 number 11s anymore

If Yasir Shah was batting in place of Zahid Mehmood Pakistan would have put England under serious pressure. Yasir Shah can play shots of good deliveries.

Pakistan collapses continue with remarkable consistency 5-16, 6-17 and 5-16 in their last three innings of the Test match.

Worst in the world for sure.

Pakistan should learn from South Africa... A big lesson is how a proper test team's tail can turn the whole game in their favor... Brilliant stuff today from South Africa.

The first pre requisite for a tailender to survive is a good defensive technique. The next pre requisite is the ability to rotate the strike. If you have these two pre requisites and if you can play the big shots its a bonus.

Pakistan's tailenders can only play big shots on flat pitches but they lack a good defensive technique and ability to rotate strike which is suicidal on turning pitches.

I think India’s tail is pretty non existent as well causing them to prioritize all rounders at the expense of specialists.

Jadeja and Axar have contributed so many times with bat and ball in indias home games.
