Does Pakistan need a pace all-rounder role in the Pakistan squad for the 2023 World Cup?

This is what Abdul Razzaq thinks (recent interview):

"If we judge experience wise, then Faheem Ashraf should go [for World Cup]"

We also have Mohammad Wasim and some would say Shaheen Shah Afridi as well!

Unless the Pakistan think tank wishes to go without one?

Your thoughts?

Faheem offers nothing with either bat or ball. Playing Faheem means weakening your batting and bowling at the same time.

Pakistan should strengthen its batting and leverage spin bowling of Iftikhar, Haris Sohail and Salman.

Pakistan’s batting in ODI cricket is as good as it has ever been and they need to max it out even if it makes the bowling slightly weak.

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Haris Sohail
Rizwan
Iftikhar
Salman
Shaheen
Usama
Rauf
Naseem

Salman, Iftikhar and Haris Sohail can combine for 10 overs.

This is better than any Pakistan ODI side since the 1999 World Cup and can go all the way with a bit of luck.

Dont need ordinary pace all rounders when you have a tactician available in Imad Wasim.

Especially in Indian conditions. I agree.

I have a lot of issues with your XI.

1. As much as I like Usama who will definitely be in my 15, I will never pick him ahead of seasoned allrounders like Imad & Shadab. I know Shadab has been pretty ordinary off late, specially with the bat, but considering the amount of investment that has been made he has to be in the XI.
2. Haris Sohail will break down in 2 minutes so please lets not go there
3. Ifti at number 6 means we are creating a scenario where we are chasing 100 off 60 balls. We will fail 8 times out of 10. Ifti has to come in early at no.4
4. Agha has done well but he will never score a hundred nor will take 5 wickets, so lets pick someone who can.
5. Your XI is missing an X factor. I would slot in M Haris in there.

My XI:
1. Fakhar
2. Imam
3. Babar
4. Ifti
5. Rizwan
6. Imad
7. M Haris
8. Shadab
9. Shaheen
10. Rauf
11. Naseem

I have very high hopes in the above XI.

Imad will score a hundred and take a fifer??

What I noticed the other day, there was no one in the top 10 for Pakistan for all rounders. Clearly it is a key role which helps the best teams.

But what you need is high quality and Faheem hasn't exactly set the heather on fire.

Since when are Wasim JR and Shaheen Afridi all rounders?

They are bowlers who can hit the ball

A real pace allrounder brings immense value but you dint really need one in India if you have good spin allrounders in team already. Pakistan should be able to throw in couple quite easily.

You dont need a pace bowling allrounder in India. However, if Faheem can either have more impact as a batter or as a bowler i wont mind.

Harris Sohail hasnt played any international cricket and his form isnt that great.

Shadab Walks into the team

1. Just because we have “invested” in someone doesn’t mean they should play forever.. Shadab needs to be booted out!
2. Partly agree - it’s between him and Abdullah for the no. 4 slot
3. Ifti does not have the patience nor the technique to be a no. 4 batsman in ODI. A BIG NO!
4. If you need a no. 6 to score a hundred you are doomed to fail. Agha easily makes the starting XI
5. M. Haris barely makes the team in T20 so a no-go for ODI’s

Shaheen is a better pace all rounder than Faheem these days.

While a quality pace bowling all rounder is a luxury to have but a rarity more often then not and one can’t force a pace bowling all rounder in the XI for the sake of it. Pakistan doesn’t have anyone upto the level that will force himself in the XI across the conditions as a top 7 batter and a regular bowling option.

Also as WC is in India, so with Agha, Iftikhar, Shadab, Nawaz and even Usama and some pacers having ability to bat I believe combination and options are set for the conditions.

I feel like M. Haris can be a surprise finisher. I like how Pakistan tried him out as a finisher in I believe the 4th ODi vs NZ? Or the 5th. But it was certainly interesting. He's vulnerable against the new ball but he can def smack the old ball around. Other than him, 3 pacers and 3 spin all-rounders. If

Fakhar, Imam, Babar, Riz, Imad, Ifti, Agha, M. Haris, Shaheen, Rauf, Naseem

The 4 reserves in a 15 man squad should be Shadab, Usama Mir, Aamer Jamal, M. Wasim

The spinners can rotate depending on the day.

Rizwan needs to be replaced with Harris.

Imam
Fakhar
Babar
Harris ( WK )
Iftikhar
Aga Salman
Imad
Shadab
Shaheen
Harris Rauf
Naseem Shah

I can dig this XI. Realistically i think we'll see Agha get the nod over Wasim though because his ODI performances are genuinely better at this point, though i agree that Imad is the superior cricketer.

Mohammad Haris feels like a luxury as you never know if he'll come off, but if we can get Ifti to regularly chip in with the ball we may be able to afford to have him around. As an alternative we can swap him for Usama Mir on wickets where an additional leg spinner could be an X factor.

Don’t need one. Imad is clearly our best allrounder with the bat no one else comes close. The way he bowls he will be useful on pace friendly pitches too, he can still throttle the runs.

Iftikhar should stay at 6. When he’s batted up the order he’s done poorly, down the order for some reason he pops off. I don’t think he handles the pressure of building the innings well. Keep him there for now.

Agha Salman on the other hand has looked pretty fluent building an innings. Bat him at 5, or maybe even 4.

Rizwan stays at 4 or 5 because he’s the best keeper and capable of big scores. Mohammed Haris is nice in theory but isn’t even consistent scoring in t20s let alone list a or odi cricket and would need to reinvent himself middle/lower order. In a few years Haris might be ready to take over but he isn’t there right now.

+1

But who does Imad come in place of then?

Every one included agha Salman . is he hard hitting allrounder? Can he offer 10 over if team needed.

Agha Salman is one of those steady players who will chip in, we already have plenty of steady guys like Imam, Babar & Rizwan. Even Fakhar goes in his shell sometimes.

We need an X factor, and thats why my choice is M Haris

We should have been picked Amir Jamal as an all rounder, he can bowl with some pace and also good with bat.

Nope, with the current Sober level of all rounders available in Pakistan. We should look to play only specialists.

It would definitely be great to have one but the only real option we have at the moment is Faheem Ashraf. The next player in line would be Aamer Jamal but he doesn't have a good record in List A cricket with a batting average of 10.94 and bowling average of 31.45.
