I have been really impressed by this lad. Though he hasnt set the world on fire on Day 1 of the test match but I have noticed a certain spark in this 20 year old. I hardly saw any nerves on his face on debut. He has a great body language. When he came in to bat he hit an elegant four. In the one over he bowled he looked threatening. Keep an eye on this lad, he looks promising.

What's up with his action? Not sure why young bowlers have to invent some really odd action to make themselves unique

Shows the lack of spinners in England. He's 20 but wouldn't get anywhere near the Pakistan under 19 team.

You really think he just decided to go with a slightly odd action (his action itself is pretty regulation anyway) to be unique?

Looks good.

If ball isnt turning seems to know the lengths and variations required to contain and still be threatening.

Wouldnt be surprised if it gets you noticed. But actual action is simple - just the build up is weird

Dominic Bess - First impressions?

To me he is not cut out for international cricket, I know he is just 20 but he doesn’t look good enough.. He is a traditional off spinner but these days you need to bend your arm (literally) to become successful in international matches as an off spinner..

He needs to add more variations but from first impressions he would be an average bowler like moeen ali before him..

Your views?

He is playing against a side that is one of the best in the world against spin and SPECIALLY against off-spin. He will do better against sides like NZ, SA, AUS and WI.

He definitely doesn’t look international class.

Not his fault though, he’s too young and inexperienced.

But the cuboard is empty regarding spin bowlers in the English game.

He looks OK. Puts revs on the ball and has a decent action, and not a pitch to judge a spinner on debut

You can tell from the few overs that he's very ordinary.. well at least not good enough to replace Moeen Ali as a spinner alone. Mo gets more revs on the ball than him as evident on sky sports coverage and in the slow motion replays, you could see that the angle of the seam on his deliveries were not that of top quality spinners. He literally didn't get the ball to turn AT ALL.

First impressions...

The captain barely uses. That’s the red flag he’s not good enough. Quality spinners get put on for an actual spell.

Fantastic clutch knock, not sure about the bowling though!

He looks 48. Doesn’t look 20 AT ALL!!

He got a half century, but he’s pretty slow and his bowling is pretty bad. Shadab is much better than him at both.

Didn't do much with the ball but potentially a match winning innings with the bat.

I’m pretty sure I saw some that went the other way. He’s a tidy offspinner that’s it.

But remember Nathan Hauritz who we made to look like Shane Warne in 2010 chasing a small total? I fear the same is gonna happen with this guy.

Well of course he wouldn’t get into an under-19s team, he is 20.

Im sure you knew what I meant. Let me clarfiy, there are dozens of Pakistani off spinners who are aged between 16-19 who are far better than Bess.

He can learn and improve because we have seen the kid is a fighter and a smart cricketer but at the moment his not good enough to play International cricket. Especially coming up against Pakistani and Indian batsmen this summer who are the best players of spin bowling in the world, it's a very tough ask. Unless he finds rank turners or batsmen give their wickets away he isn't an issue for the top 6 batsmen of those nations.

I would have given Liam Dawson another chance. His average in first class is 35 but he has improved a lot over the years. He also has a batting average over 32.

Dawson's injured.

Dawson's injured.

Thats a shame. But was in conention of being selected? I know it's a different kettle of fish entirly but I loved how he played in the IPL. Even when batsmen were merely defending him, he was causing them trouble. Being a left armer imo he would have caused some issues for Pakistan and Indian right hand batsmen this summer.

Can you please name the dozens?

He obviously has the right attitude to play tests and I would stick with him as plenty of others don't seem to at present.

No need. Evertime I have ever watched under 19 cricket, Paksitan have had better spinners than Mr Bess. So it's a fair assumption those present now and those waiting to get are also better than him.

David Gower himself was pretty disgusted by his few overs this morning when the pitch was a day 4 pitch.

He might improve and I hope he does, seems a nice lad but for now he is not test standard and anyone who thinks he is, imo is clueless of this sport. :)

He is much better than Leach and much better than i thought. He isnt far from being ready-He will turn the ball a lot when he gets his confidence at this level, he has a nice loop and seems to have a bit of a swagger.

I share your skepticism of Bess. England isn't all that renowned for producing spin bowlers anyway. However, even in Pakistan, there's a dearth of off-spinners. I think off-spin is dying out.

His batting looked better than his bowling which if I'm honest looked rather ordinary.

He bowled the occasional decent delivery, but come on no decent batsman is going to worry about this guy's bowling.

His bowling is garbage but he does have guts. Should get another test to prove himself.

Good to see the young man has been retained.
