"Don’t feel too confident because the red ball will zip through a lot at MCG" : Aamir Sohail

KARACHI: The miraculous near-win Pakistan almost pulled off in the first Test against Australia means that the confidence in the camp is supposed to be high, but former captain Aamir Sohail has warned the players to not be overconfident and tread lightly.

After being completely outplayed in the first three innings, Pakistan staged a late comeback and nearly achieved what would have been a record chase in Test match history; in the end falling a mere 38 runs short of the target.

The visitors’ outstanding fightback meant they left the Gabba with their heads held high instead of the actual winners.

While theirs was certainly no mean feat, Sohail has warned Pakistan players to keep their collective feet on the ground in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

“My message to the players is don’t feel too confident because the red ball will zip through a lot at MCG, so if our batsmen can’t find boundaries, they should look to rotate the strike and find singles and doubles,” Sohail told The Express Tribune. “Regarding our bowlers, they will have to learn on the fly to hit the right line and length. Our frontline pacers have often struggled in Australia so our current crop will have to learn quickly where to pitch the ball to get the best results.”

When asked if Sohail Khan should be drafted in for the struggling Rahat Ali, the former opener concurred and advised against fielding an all-southpaw pace unit a la the Brisbane Test.

“The Australian batsmen have gotten used to the left-arm angle so something needs changing. Sohail Khan is an option, if he is fit,” he said.

Sohail also commented on leg-spinner Yasir Shah’s struggles and questioned why a glaring error in his bowling action that limits his ability has not yet been corrected.

“Yasir is not someone who spins the ball a lot, which I’m quite surprised with considering he has worked so much under Mushtaq Ahmed. He bowls front-on which is why his leg spin isn’t that vicious and most of his wickets come on either straighter balls or googlies,” said Sohail.

The former captain was also critical of captain Misbahul Haq. “He was defensive in the first innings and ultra-defensive in the second. I don’t understand the point of trying to stop leaking runs in Australia when you’ve conceded a first innings lead. He should’ve gone for wickets as that would’ve set the tone for the second Test.

He continued, “Defensive captaincy may have worked in England, but it was down to the wickets there being uncharacteristically slower. Wickets in Australia are different. Misbah will have to think out of the box.”

‘Enjoy the Test’

Sohail’s former teammate Rashid Latif had a more optimistic take as he commended the team for their valiant effort and told them to enjoy the Boxing Day Test, which he feels is unlike any other match.

“Not everyone gets the chance to play a Boxing Day Test. An audience of 65,000 people in a Test match is not an everyday occurrence so our players should consider themselves lucky and cherish these moment,” said Latif.

However, the former wicketkeeper also rued the team’s lack of planning. “Our players can’t exploit the opposition’s weakness. Everyone has their flaws, even Mitchell Starc — as good as he is, he is a bit wayward over the wicket,” he added. “Our batsmen should have targeted that, but they didn’t. They need to learn to do so.”

Concur with everything except the red ball zipping through. Our batsmen have already have faced the toughest conditions they were going to face this tour. Pink ball at night on one of the bounciest pitches in the world. It doesn't get tougher than that.

Barring the first innings collapse by Pak batsmen, pink ball under lights didn't really generate any reward

Is he nuts or what, Yasir does not bowl googlies, even when his life might depend on them; the number of times he bowled a googly in the past in his career, barring the last series against WI (where I saw him bowl a few) can be counted down to a dozen times or slightly more!

Yasir mostly gets his wickets due to the excellent line-n-length he bows or through mistakes by batsmen, but the last thing he relies on, the very absolute last thing is his googly ball

Really ??

I really doubt the MCG will be anywhere as quick or bouncy as the Gabba.

General complaint about pink ball is lack of reverse swing and goes softer quicker

Always loved hearing to him on air.

Probably the only Pakistani commentator who speaks with great insight into the game and it's a shame he isn't doing commentary nowadays. Waqar is decent, Wasim often goes to "in my days" stories and Ramiz is well, Ramiz (although a fun guy).

MCG is much closer to the wickets Pakistan is used to. Maybe not as slow and low as UAE pitches but not far from it either.

MCG is far from any UAE pitch. Relatively slower to Brisbane but still considerable bounce on offer.

I have a feeling we're going to self-destruct at the MCG.

70K crowd, our players have never played in such an environment. You have to be mentally there and confident to be able to perform.

Also, Yasir has been poor outside Asia. ENG gifted him lotsa wickets, plus the wickets were also relatively suitable.

I'd go bold and bring in Asghar.

Yes the danger is Pak bat first, get bundled out for under 250 and are up against it again.

Yasir's productivity would increase tenfold if tactical genius didn't restrict him to bowling a narrow two stump channel which is pretty much impossible.

Main problem is that our bowling is not upto the standard that it could bowl out Australia under 250. Until and unless we improve our bowling we'll continue to lose outside of UAE.

Every time one of these pundits speaks, they all plead for attacking and aggressive cricket.

Isn't this supposed to be one of the stronger traits of this team under Misbah?

Confidence should be pretty high after the last outing.

Yasir bowled pretty well at the Gabba. He was used far too defensively, though.

1. Compared to the past teams, yes. But, still not that consistent and the genes won't change that soon, can falter.

2. That's what we think.

3. That is no excuse. The strategy was excellent, how do you think we got Warner strangled and eventually out? And had the slowest start for him in Tests in ages?

Anyway, that was initially at the start. What about the rest of the match OR in England where he was carted too? Poor average.

Poor logic and lack of tactical knowledge here. Read above.
