RAWALPINDI: Director General of the Pakistan Army's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major General Asif Ghafoor is currently addressing a press conference.

"There are quite a few topics which I wanted to discuss for a while. However, most of my discussion will be on the situation arising after the Pulwama attack," DG ISPR said as he began his press conference.

"On February 14, a Kashmiri youngster targeted Indian security forces. After the incident, India starting bombarding Pakistan with allegations without any thought or proof," Major General Ghafoor said. "Pakistan took time to respond. We wanted to investigate the allegations and when we were sure footed, the prime minister of Pakistan responded."

"Before I speak further about this issue, I want to say some things. In 1947, Pakistan obtained independence and this is something India has not been able to accept till date. In 1998, we obtained nuclear power while in 2008 we were fighting a decisive war against militants and emerging successful so India started to mobilise its troops on the border."

"Whenever the situation improves in Pakistan, India tries to destabilise the country," he asserted. "In February when the Pulwama attack happened there were eight important events in Pakistan — Saudi crown prince's visit, Afghan reconciliation process, UNSC talking about terror financing, EU deliberating on human rights violations in occupied Kashmir, Kulbhushan Jadhav hearing, FATF hearing and decision on Pakistan, PSL and Kartarpur meeting. The elections are upcoming in India and the indigenous struggle in occupied Kashmir is high."

“What would Pakistan benefit from Pulwama attack in light of these events? Pakistan would be at a loss,” the head of the military's media wing stressed.

Major General Ghafoor continued, "The attack took place miles away from the Line of Control (LoC) and the explosives used were not from Pakistan. The car used was not from Pakistan either. The attack was carried out by a youngster from occupied Kashmir who was mistreated by Indian security forces."

“People in Indian media and social media had predicted an attack like this prior to the elections.”

Questioning whether Pakistan is in diplomatic isolation, DG ISPR said, "You have seen how the heads and delegations of foreign countries are visiting."

"The prime minister made an offer to India which has never been made before. The premier offered to probe the India if actionable evidence is shared," he maintained.

Refuting reports that "Pakistan is preparing for a war", Major General Ghafoor said, "Threats and reports of a war are coming from your side. We are only using our right to self defence."

"Pakistan's armed forces shall never be surprised by India," said DG ISPR.

Major General Ghafoor's press conference comes at a time when Pakistan and neighbouring India face heightened tensions after an attack in Pulwama in occupied Kashmir (IoK).

New Delhi has blamed Islamabad for the attack which claimed the lives of over 40 paramilitaries. The Pakistani leadership has strongly denied the allegations.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the Pakistan Army to respond "decisively and comprehensively" to any aggression or misadventure by India. The premier issued the directives during a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC), which discussed the geo-strategic environment in the region as well as the situation arising after the Pulwama incident.

Prior to the NSC meeting, PM Imran also held a meeting with Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. Sources said the two figures discussed the country and region’s security situation.

Some 44 Indian paramilitary personnel were killed when an explosives-packed van rammed into a convoy transporting 2,500 security forces in the district, in the deadliest attack in the valley in 30 years.

Military does not want war, but will respond with overwhelming force: Maj Gen Ghafoor

Director General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor addressed a press conference at General Headquarters Rawalpindi on Friday.

"There were lots of issues that I wanted to talk about today," Maj Gen Ghafoor said: "But due to the situation after Pulwama, I will [only] be talking about that.

"Right after the attack, India started raining accusations on Pakistan without thinking and without any evidence. Pakistan has, this time, taken out some time to respond.

"Sixty-four per cent of our population is youth and we are in a fifth generation warfare, so [their] target is the youth of Pakistan. Will give some context so our youth can understand [this point].

"We have a 72-year history. The partition happened in 1947 and Pakistan was liberated. India still hasn’t been able to accept that.

"In 1965, tensions emerged at the Line of Control. Our country that had taken the path to progress was affected. Then in 1971, our [geographical] distance from East Pakistan was exploited. The Mukti Bahini [group] is in front of you. The real terrorism was done then through Mukti Bahini.

"But we were able to get through that as well because of our resilience. From 1971 to 1984, there were no incidents on our eastern border. The situation was relatively calm, and there weren’t any cross-LoC firings. We began progressing again.

"But the Siachen happened. One day, when Pak Army wasn't there, 'you came and occupied our area, and since then the Pakistan Army has been battling there.

"Then [it moved towards] nuclear weapons. India started using indirect strategies, and began promoting terrorism in our country. If this hadn’t happened, we would have been able to prevent the entry of terrorists from the western border. Then in 2008 when we were [forced to fight] terrorism again. The purpose was to scuttle our counter-terrorism efforts, and the live proof of this is Kulbhushan Jadhav.

"On the contrary, what did Pakistan do? [We offered] comprehensive two-way dialogue, we created a hotline for the DGMOs, we set up five crossing points on LoC. From 2004-8 our CBD sittings happened but in the aftermath of the Mumbai attack even those were discontinued.

"Whenever there is supposed to be an important event in Pakistan, or the country is moving towards stability, then there is always some sort of staged incident in either India or occupied Kashmir," the DG ISPR said.

"In Dec 2001, the Indian parliament attack, they were supposed to have general elections and the presidential election in 2002, the United Nations General Assembly was in session. It was around this time that an influx of terrorists began on Pakistan's western border following 9/11.

"When the Mumbai attack took place, our progress on the war on terror was going quite well and at this time too, there were to be general elections in India from February to December.

"On Jan 2, 2016, Pathankot happened. The President of the United States' State of the Union address was due. India was to see state elections and there were foreign secretary-level talks scheduled between India and Pakistan. That was scuttled.

"The Uri incident happened on Sept 18, 2016, when our prime minister was set to go to the UNGA to deliver a speech. So this pattern shows that whenever in Pakistan there is some important event due, some staged action of this sort takes place.

"This month, there were eight significant events. Saudi crown prince was visiting, there was a discussion due on terror listing in the UNSC, Afghan peace talks were ongoing and there were developments in European Union and the United Nations on IOK. There was also the Jadhav hearing, the FATF hearing, a meeting on Kartarpur border as well as PSL matches.

Maj Gen Ghafoor also pointed out that India has scheduled elections in the coming months and in occupied Kashmir their indigenous struggle is at its peak right now and out of India's control.

"In light of these eight events, what benefit would Pakistan get from the Pulwama attack?" he questioned. "I'll leave it to you to judge who is benefiting from all this."

"India is making efforts to diplomatically isolate Pakistan, but is Pakistan diplomatically isolated?" he asked. "If it is, you have seen lately how foreign heads of state and dignitaries have been visiting Pakistan, how foreign investment is pouring in, how development is ongoing on CPEC. Regarding military cooperation and diplomacy, we've held joint exercises with Russia, China, the PAF and US Air Force together, and lately the Aman naval exercise took place."

"Now look at Pulwama carefully. How can it be that any person from Pakistan can cross the LoC and go into an area where security forces' population is greater than the local population?

"'You should ask your security forces, you’ve been sitting there for so many years, you spend so much on defence, how did it happen?' The attack happened miles away from the border, the explosives were local, the car used was local and the attack too was carried out by a local Kashmiri youth.

"You know the history, you know how the attacker was arrested and mistreated by security forces. If you do technical analysis of the Adil Dar video, the quality and the distance it was shot from, it gives lots of indicators."

The DG ISPR said that "Pakistan is adopting a new mindset" and taking measures to ensure "peace, economic stability and a better future for our next generations".

"There is no room for error," he said. "And this is why Pakistan first thought after the Pulwama incident and then responded."

The DG ISPR reminded India of Prime Minister Imran Khan's offer to conduct a probe. "Our prime minister made an offer than had perhaps never been made before. He said 'we will do whatever kind of investigation you want and then give evidence.

"The offer was made not because of any pressure but because anyone found guilty would be the enemy of Pakistan."

I think they will try to attack the PSL using their afghan or baloch friends. I truly hope the home leg goes fof without a hitch. But i have a feeling they will try their utmost to stop this and thus put our cricket back again. Its a small way of thinking but we have seen they have done this in the past and will be looking to do this again. They dont even have to target players etc.Just a rickshaw bomb or bus bomb near the stadium will be enough.

Our PM should release a direct threat to them, that if any incident happens in the nation during this time we will hold their govt and PM directly responsible. and reserve the right of self defence like Israel does.

I have that fear too.... Modi the terrorist can go to any length. If any bombing happens during PSL, Pakistan should treat it as an act of war.

That would be too obvious. India won't do it considering they are praised for restraint here. If at all, there could be a third party that could take advantage here to implicate India.

That's where the mystery lies. It could well be a third party taking advantage to implicate Pakistan. As some posters mentioned, BJP or Congress doing this is a bit far fetched considering a leak would be the death knell for those parties in India. Very high risk!!!

This.
I am so worried. This would be an ideal platform for them to humiliate Pakistan and create unrest there.

We need to be extra vigilant, praying for the best.

This is the first thing that came to my mind. Hopefully those 8 matches go well. However there is gonna be A LOT of security so anything like that happening is very very slim.

I have been worrying of the same things others have listed. An attack of any scale inside Pakistan during PSL would be crippling to the little bit of progress we have made. Tbh before the pulwama attack and all this war hysteria was created, I was enjoying life and PSL so much. I had forgotten about fights and wars, and now I have a hard time focusing on the PSL and enjoying cricket. Stress is high ever since this has happened and i am actively praying that the whole situation gets handled peacefully

He seems to have selective amnesia of how ISI harbored terrorists for years in the past. USA arrested Headley so there was proof that Mumbai attacks were by LeT supported by Pak. There's no conspiracy there atleast

Don't worry. There isn't going to be a war according to PPers and the security will be very high in the PSL matches so even if god forbid anything happens then we still should be all good.

Yeap PP Keyboard warriors at full flow :kakmal...

When Ajmal Kasab and co attacked Mumbai, that wasn't even considered an act of war and there was no war lol....

I hope there wont be any issues that will rock the PSL... I am sick and tired of all these politicians and their stupid games for power and money while rest of the populations suffers.....

Yes no compromises on security inshaAllah.

Ya cause Pakistan Army doesn't have control over its military like Indian military and Indian government has. How the hell do Terrorists infiltrate their own camps, get trained and attack them ? I don't think Pakistan government was behind the Mumbai attack, like it would only bring bad name to Pakistan and the outcome through trades and relationship would be worse.

Indian army and agencies have helped TTP kill thousands of innocence Pakistanis through their secret embassies and funding. Pakistan should always be careful. Indians preach what they can't practice. They have double standards of the highest level.

Lol. If they can get away buldozing Baberi mosque in the daylight who knows. People can go to crazy limits to hold on to seats.

Modi seems to have got the message loud and clear. Afterwards in his speech somewhere he was talking of IK's background. The threats had completely died down.

There is no way India was attacking Pakistan militarily after Imran's speech. Pak has been incredibly mature. India's focus is now on Kashmir

From what I am hearing India is moving heavy artillery to the Pak border. Modi is under massive pressure to have a restricted war with Pak before the Indian elections. What he does not understand is once it starts there is no telling as to how it will end. There is no such thing as a restricted war if the other side keeps firing.

The surgical strike drama is a one time deal. Can't keep doing it. It's just a posture before elections that India is prepared to go to war
