"Don’t want to deprive the Australians chance to see an unbelievable legspinner" : Mickey Arthur

http://tribune.com.pk/story/1260897...ans-chance-see-yasir-shah-says-mickey-arthur/

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur said he doesn’t want to deprive the spectators a chance to watch Yasir Shah as he is confident the leg-spinner will be fit to face Australia in this week’s day-night opening Test of a three-match series at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Yasir, who was left out of Pakistan’s final Test of the recent series in New Zealand, missed last week’s pink-ball tour match against a Cricket Australia XI in Cairns because of a back injury sustained in training.

“I saw him at the team hotel before I came and he seemed fine,” Arthur told reporters in Brisbane. “Which is good because you don’t want to deprive the Australian public the chance to see an unbelievable leg-spinner go about his business. And obviously he is integral to our plans as well.”

Pakistan have never beaten Australia in a Test series Down Under and the ability to dismiss their hosts twice in a match will be key to their hopes of doing so in the upcoming contests, which also includes Tests in Melbourne and Sydney.

Yasir, who has taken 116 wickets in 20 tests at average of 27.89, is their top-ranked bowler in the International Cricket Council Test rankings and took 12 wickets at an average of a shade over 17 when Pakistan swept Australia in his debut series in the UAE in 2014.

Arthur, a former coach of Australia, also said he would be looking for a better batting performance from the tourists after their middle and lower collapsed against the Black Caps in Hamilton last month and they lost the series 2-0.

“It’s no secret we need to get some runs,”
said Arthur. “Adapting outside our conditions is difficult. It is like Australia playing on the sub-continent but we are working hard on that.”

The opening Test, the first day-nighter at the Gabba, starts on Thursday.

Arthur said he wants to prove Cricket Australia erred by sacking him.

The South African, who was fired by Cricket Australia on the eve of the 2013 Ashes after a run of defeats and replaced by current national coach Darren Lehmann, will be plotting Pakistan’s strategy.

The 48-year-old said there was a part of him that still had a point to prove to his former employers.

“I wouldn’t be honest if I said otherwise,” he said.

“That’s what happens. It’s a ruthless world out there.".

“I always maintain that I loved the first year and a bit of it, it was outstanding and I felt we made some significant progress."

“This series isn’t about me against Australia. It’s about two very good cricket teams going head to head, I hope that can be the focus.”

Arthur said he was coming to terms with his anticipated return to face his former team on the other side. “It’s pretty surreal really to be walking into the Gabba… coming back as a visiting coach,” he said.

Arthur’s tenure was marked by the so-called “homeworkgate”, when four players — Shane Watson, James Pattinson, Mitchell Johnson and Usman Khawaja — were banned for one Test for failing to complete a written task set during a disastrous tour of India in 2013.

Australia pace spearhead Mitchell Starc said the home team was “a lot closer” since Arthur was replaced with Lehmann.

“The team wasn’t very close in those times but that’s because of different characters,” said Arthur. “Since then the guys have matured and gone on… Mitchell Starc is a world-class cricketer.”

Arthur said he was prepared with some inside information about the current Australian players but it was up to his Pakistan team to put it to good use. “The intelligence is good… we’ll be providing a whole lot of information, he said. “Assistant coach (and former Australia coach) Steve Rixon knows the guys pretty well as well. The information is useless if you don’t put it into practice.”

Australia v Pakistan: Coach Mickey Arthur not expecting warm welcome on 'surreal' return to Gabba

http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2016-...warm-welcome-from-aussies/8112976?pfmredir=sm

Mickey Arthur is not expecting any invites for tea or scones from his former charges, admitting it is a bizarre feeling to be coaching against Australia.

Arthur, who was sacked by Cricket Australia (CA) on the eve of the 2013 Ashes, will mentor Pakistan in the three-Test series, which starts in Brisbane on Thursday.

The South African finds himself plotting the downfall of many of his former pupils, including Usman Khawaja, who was one of four players suspended as part of the 'homeworkgate' saga that led to Arthur's exit.

"I don't think there's going to be too many invitations out there [to catch up], judging by the media," Arthur said on Monday.

"I have kept in contact with a couple of guys, yeah."

"It's pretty surreal really to be walking into the Gabba ... coming back as a visiting coach."

Arthur added a part of him wanted to prove CA made a mistake removing him.

"I wouldn't be honest if I said otherwise," he said.

"That's what happens. It's a ruthless world out there."

"I always maintain that I loved the first year and a bit of it, it was outstanding and I felt we made some significant progress.

"This series isn't about me against Australia, it's about two very good cricket teams going head to head. I hope that can be the focus."

Already Mitchell Starc has described Australia as being "a lot closer" since Darren Lehmann replaced Arthur.

"The team wasn't very close in those times but that's because of different characters," Arthur said.

"Since then the guys have matured and gone on ... Mitchell Starc is a world-class cricketer."

Arthur noted he had some insider information about Australian players but it was a matter of the tourists putting it to good use.

"The intelligence is good ... we'll be providing a whole lot of information," he said.

"Assistant coach Steve Rixon [who was also axed by Cricket Australia] knows the guys pretty well as well."

"The information is useless if you don't put it into practice."

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur expects leg-spinner Yasir Shah to play in first Test against Australia

PAKISTAN coach Mickey Arthur believes champion leg-spinner Yasir Shah will be fit to play in this week’s day-night first Test against Australia in Brisbane.

The world’s premier leggie is set to return from a back injury that forced him out of Pakistan’s sole warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI in Cairns.

“I saw him at the team hotel before I came and he seemed fine,” Arthur said.

“Which is good because you don’t want to deprive the Australian public the chance to see an unbelievable leg-spinner go about his business. And obviously he is integral to our plans as well.”

The news will be music to the ears of a Pakistan side hoping to claim a maiden Test series win on Australian soil against the rebuilding hosts. Shah tore apart Australia on Test debut the last time the two teams met in the UAE in October 2014.

Shah took 12 wickets at 17.25 to inspire Pakistan’s crushing 2-0 series win two years ago.

Shah missed Pakistan’s last Test against New Zealand at Hamilton when the visitors opted for four quicks on a grassy pitch.

But Shah is expected to finally be unleashed on a bouncy Gabba deck under lights in this week’s pink ball Test.

Shah’s return would also help solve Pakistan’s biggest concern — over rates. Stand-in skipper Azhar Ali was fined 100 per cent of his match fee and his teammates 50 per cent after they were ruled to be five overs short of their target at their last Test in Hamilton.

Regular captain Misbah-ul-Haq was suspended for the Hamilton Test after also being found guilty of maintain a slow over rate in their previous clash.

“Over rates is a priority for us,”
Arthur said. “The players are giving away their cash, we’ve had a captain suspended — we’ve just got to be better than that.

“There is a constant reminder all the time that we have to get through out overs.”

Arthur admitted Pakistan’s batting needed to improve after losing its last seven wickets for 31 in a 138-run second Test loss to New Zealand in Hamilton. The Kiwis sealed their first series win over Pakistan since 1985 and Pakistan’s 2-0 series loss in New Zealand dropped them from second to fourth in the Test nation rankings.

“It’s no secret we need to get some runs,”
Arthur said.

“Adapting outside our conditions is difficult. It is like Australia playing on the subcontinent, but we are working hard on that.”

Warnie rates him very high too. Needs to pick up a couple of 5'ers this series

I know he's only answering the questions out to him, but Arthur needs to make sure to create the impression that this isn't about him.

Arthur talking way too much, just win the damn thing and leave the talking to everybody else, and that talk will be all praise.

So another one starts hyping Yasir Shah.

I'm very sick of it. You KNOW he's going to be rubbish specially on a green wicket, day/night Test.

You know he'll most probably go wicket-less like in NZ green pitches. Why still hype him and bring up expectations for those who haven't seen him much in Aus?

Haven't heard much from lehmann. While mickey is talking as if he is being paid for it.

Mickey always comes forward as he knows how to handle media especially in Australia

Mickey should learn how to talk to media in a diplomatic manner. His personal vendetta probably making his emotions high.

Mickey Arthur has almost a 100% record so far of jinxing our players

He is handling them well so far. But the issue is, the more he will appear infront of the media , the more questions they will ask him about this series being an opportunity for his revenge against CA . that's not what Pakistani fans would want this series to be about.

Yasir Shah needs to spin the ball. He hardly does that. The reason Kaneria was successful in Australia (only in terms of wickets, his avg is very poor) was because he spun the ball a great deal. If Yasir is going to be bowling those straightish leg breaks that we saw in the UAE against WI, the Australian public is not going to be deprived at all.

My favourite Yasir spell is at Lords where he barely spun the ball. Deceived the batsmen with dip and change of pace. Look at his delivery against Ballance in the first innings. It was a great spell to watch.

He is not a natural big spinner of the ball. He relies on his variation and asking him to become a big spinner won't help his cause .

He was kind of a mixed bag in England for me. Excellent at Lords, hammered to all parts at Old Trafford, pretty unsuccessful at Birmingham but did well to finish off at the Oval.
Don't see him being 'that' much of a threat for Australian batsmen on bouncy, green tracks.

he doesnt need to spin it. pretty much the whole world knows that australians struggle with one that goes on straight.

They came.

If Pakistan wants to win then Mickey Arthur should start praising opposition players as soon as possible. :shezzy

It is ruthless Mickey and you did prove to them that they made the right decision.

He said that?

Really?

Man he is the biggest jinxer the world has ever seen, and these comments should be etched in history books as the "best egg on face" comments.

The downside of having a leg spinner. He will get bucketful of wickets in helpful conditions but get smashed if the conditions are not there. The alarming thing is Yasir actually tried to defend here but got destroyed. Averaging 80+ at more than 4.5 RPO are pretty pathetic stats for a supposedly #1 spinner of the world. Just shows how outstanding Herath was to average around 32 or so and this despite having a poor pace attack which is supposed to lead.

he puts too much pressure our players most of this current lot is humble down to earth type and such high praises make them feel pressure from unwanted attention.

Exactly. His work ethics is comical. To praise a player in a way he is not worthy of.He compared Asad to Sachin. I have a feeling.Mickey won't last long as a coach.

Think we are being harsh on Mickey. If our players are so weak that they sink under the weight of praise, then they are not good to start with

Whose work ethic is comical and how do you know that for sure

Mickey was in a too much tough mood which resulted in confrontation with the players when he was coach of Australia.Ultimately he was removed as a coach. Here, we see the opposite. He is praising players too much with use of superlative words which seems to be trolling. He has compared Asad with Sachin, has leveled Yasir an unbelievable leg spinner. They are far from worthy of these compliments. His work ethics is really comical.

Isn't that in the same ballpark as every Indian "great" bowler ever?

He'll get it back down to 27 once he gets to Asia.

No its not...

And his average may become better later.. As of now he is not the best of the lot... And surely is not :quote: "unbelievable" :quote:

Mickey got it half right, I think most Australians have respect for Yasir. He didn't have a good tour but so far he has taken it very well and hasn't blamed the crowds, pitches, players or anything else. He will be remembered for his good spirit more than his statistics.

Think we are being harsh on Mickey. If our players are so weak that they sink under the weight of praise, then they are not good to start with

Exactly, and its not as if Arthur has been afraid to dish out public criticism when necessary - after our wayward bowling to Cook and Hales in the final session of Day 3 at Edgbaston for example.

ALL tough tours and guns are out... MICKEY started his tenure with all important ENGLISH summer.. MISBAH form dropped and got humiliated for continuing with 43 years of age in AUS... Normally to perform in AUS one has to be in his peak fitness otherwise is very tough to score runs or take wickets in AUS,,,YASIR was told by the AUSSIES "look u don't have any variation or spin in your bowling, go learn from domestics and comeback"..

Oh no no, he is "unbelievable", who else could have given 100 at almost 8 an over. Truly one of a kind.

Ashwin always had the ingredients to become good and better.

Now he's remarkably good. So mant varities and the ability t9to deceive batsmen.

Yasir never had it. At least not as much tricks up his sleeve as ash. Bilal7 let's be neutral here.
