Donald Trump says Iran has made 'a very big mistake' after US military drone shot down

War Hawkish weren’t around in White House few years ago.

In current whites house plenty of war hawkish trying to find any excuse to attack Iran.

Any war will result in the closing of the strait of hormuz. Stop 35% of the worlds oil being moved for 2/3 days and the global economy will fold inc the US economy. Even if this isn't the case Iran has enough misslies to take down Israel and the Arab nations with them.

All of that is true, and likely scenario if Iran is attacked.

But for those who are adamant to attack Iran care less about world’s economy.

Man the last thing we need is another war on our door.... can't the US move their focus towards some other part of the globe? :danish

Iran is not Iraq. Attacking Iran means war in the entire region that will spread like wildfire. China and Russia will stand with Iran big time.

"You can pee on my grave the day USA attacks Iran (Because it will never)". General Hameed Gul.

War will be disastrous for all. Let better sense prevail because once the genie is out of the bag, return to equilibrium will not happen as has been the case with the Iraq war.

President Donald Trump approved retaliatory military strikes against Iran on Thursday before changing his mind, US media reports.

The New York Times, citing senior White House officials, said strikes were planned against a "handful" of targets.

They say the operation was allegedly under way "in its early stages" when Mr Trump stood the US military down. The White House has so far made no comment.

This comes after Iran shot down a US spy drone.

Tehran claims the unmanned US aircraft entered their airspace early on Thursday morning. The US maintains it was shot down in international airspace.

Iran nuclear deal - all you need to know
Tensions have been escalating between the two countries, with the US recently blaming Iran for attacks on oil tankers operating in the region. Meanwhile, Iran has announced it will soon exceed international agreed limits on its nuclear programme.

Last year, the US unilaterally pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear activities.

What do the US media reports say?
The New York Times first published details of the apparent planned strikes late on Thursday night in Washington.

The NYT said that as late as 19:00 local time (23:00 GMT), US military and diplomatic officials still expected the strikes on agreed targets, including Iranian radar and missile batteries, to take place.

"Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down," the newspaper reported, citing an unnamed senior administration official.

The strikes were set to take place just before dawn on Friday to minimise risk to the Iranian military or to civilians, the newspaper added.

Several other US media outlets then independently reported the same.

The Associated Press quoted a US official as saying that the strikes were recommended by the Pentagon and were among the options presented to senior administration officials.

The operation was called off after President Trump had spent most of Thursday discussing the Iran issue with his national security advisers and also congressional leaders, the AP reports.

It says that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton had pushed for a hardline stance, but the congressional leaders urged caution.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the US had no appetite for war with Iran, while the leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, Joe Biden, called Mr Trump's Iran strategy a "self-inflicted disaster".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said: "The administration is engaged in what I would call measured responses."

The top Democrat in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, said: "The president may not intend to go to war here, but we're worried that he and the administration may bumble into a war."

It remains unclear if the apparent strikes could still go ahead.

What happened with the drone?
On Thursday morning, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced its air force had shot down a US "spy" drone in the early hours after the unmanned aircraft violated Iranian airspace near Kuhmobarak in the southern province of Hormozgan.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeted that the US drone took off from the United Arab Emirates in "stealth mode".

"We've retrieved sections of the US military drone in our territorial waters where it was shot down," he wrote.

The US military's Central Command later confirmed that a US Navy Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS-D) aircraft was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile.

However, US military officials maintain the drone was in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz at the time.

In response, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an emergency order on Thursday evening prohibiting US airlines from operating in an overwater area of Tehran-controlled airspace nearby in response.

It said there were "numerous civil aviation aircraft operating in the area" at the time the US drone was shot down.

What has Mr Trump said?
Mr Trump himself has not yet responded to the reports about the plan for strikes against Iran.

He did, however, make several comments about the drone incident earlier on Thursday.

"Iran made a big mistake," he said, alleging the US had scientific evidence the drone was in international airspace when it was shot from the sky.

Asked about his response to the incident and whether or not he would go to war with Iran, the president repeatedly replied: "You'll find out".

He also suggested its shooting down could have caused by human error.

In a speech on Iranian state TV, IRGC commander-in-chief Maj-Gen Hossein Salami said the drone's downing was a "clear message" to the US that Iran's borders were "our red line".

Foreign minister Javad Zarif later said Iran had retrieved sections of the US military drone "in our territorial waters where it was shot down".

What other reaction has there been?
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that war between the US and Iran would be a "catastrophe with unpredictable consequences".

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint.

What else has fuelled US-Iran tensions?
On Monday, the US defence department said it was deploying 1,000 extra troops to the region in response to "hostile behaviour" by Iranian forces.

Earlier that day, Iran also announced its stockpile of low-enriched uranium would next week exceed limits it agreed with world powers under a landmark nuclear deal in 2015.

Iran stepped up its production in response to tightening economic sanctions from the US, which unilaterally withdrew from the deal last year.

The US has also accused Iran of attacking two oil tankers with mines last Thursday just outside the Strait of Hormuz, in the Gulf of Oman.

It was the second time in a month tankers had been attacked close in the region, through which a fifth of the world's oil passes each day.

Iran denies blame for the attacks.

Trump is crazy.

But he is just a puppet who is listening to the bureaucrats and lobbyists sitting in deep state. Anyone thinking he can go to war on his own doesnt know how things work. John Bolton is the warhawk's key mouthpiece who claimed last year that they will celebrate in Tehran in 2019.

Hope Britain does not get pulled into this nonsense. Trump might expect the RN to lob in a few cruise missiles.

Nothing to see here. US cannot afford to attack Iran. Its economy will collapse. Just some posturing with the primaries coming around the corner.

Iran is the only dignified and honourable Muslim nation. A truly great nation.

Man the last thing we need is another war on our door.... can't the US move their focus towards some other part of the globe? :danish

During 1970s, Irani students were given special scholarships in American universities to become Nuclear Scientists. After the fall of Shah, Iran hasn't been that strong an ally for America but America still has interests wrt Iran.

What US fails to implement through Saudia, is implemented through Iran. Defence spending of Iran is 1/8th of UAE. And probably 1/50 of Saudia.

US will never attack Iran.

BTW, what is general opinion about presence of US Naval Fleet in close proximity when Kekra Well was shutdown ?

Win win situation for Trump haters. Had he carried out the strikes, he would have been called a war monger. Now, he hasn’t, the same people will say that US can never attack Iran.

The US can annihilate Iran but the US president has shown great restraint from any knee jerk reaction and opted for more sanctions on Iran.

Your hero claimed many times Iran must be careful, US doesn't hold back etc etc but now his drone has been shot down he chickened out. Dont make threats if you cant carry them out.

USA has never won a war, nor entered a war, own its own. You can bet all the money in your pocket UK will get involved thanks to the so called special relationship. In fact I would go as far as saying Trump decided not to attack Iran because USA's allies refused to be drawn into another phoney war funded and orchestrated by the Zionists.

And here people are daily accused by you for not connecting to reality.

After reading your comments, one must ask, are you?

I sort of agree. He actually sounded humane for once. Killing 150 people for the loss of a robot aircraft would be disproportionate use of force.

Trouble is that this looks like a silly climb down after he Tweeted that he was going to strike. USA’s allies will be second-guessing him now.

Won’t be a war, will be punitive strikes maybe. Smash up the reactors, destroy some Iranian aircraft. Like Clinton did to Iraq.

I dont think that would be the case. Any sort of "controlled attack" would be met with severe response by Iran whose economy is in tatters anyway and backs against the wall. Punitive strikes would be a trigger of war.

The excuse for pulling out last minute is not believable and is probably meant for his gullible voters.
Do you really think the US Intelligence told Trump at the last minute that lives will be lost and that’s why Trump suddenly pulled out?

The type of people who vote for trump would be ok with 150 people dying so I feel this is a tactical mistake from the orange buffoon

As is shooting down a drone. I mean that there won’t be boots on the ground.

Not if the drone enters sovereign space without permission. It is then called self defense. NATO applies the same principle, as does Israel.

People thinking that this will escalate to anything beyond what it already is are delusional.

There are 3 key reasons why this will not turn into a war

1. No legal precedent. When the US and allies invaded Iraq they did so on the basis that Iraq had WMD's. That reasoning was shaky at best, but was justifiable cause for an invasion (it was later proved untrue). In the case of Iran the US has no reason to invade. They could say that Iran has nuclear weapons which is a threat to international security, but there have been repeated IAEA reports saying the contrary. So no legal angle as far as I can see.

2. Even if there was a legal angle, there would be no allied support. THE EU nations have already created a seperate channel to trade with Iran so as to not affect businesses in the EU. They wouldn't support an invasion into Iran, because of this and also because they have their own issues (Brexit, refugees etc.) which make them unable to fund another ther war.

3. No local backing. The US is currently heading to another election. Another unwanted war could be used by the Democratic candidates to further illustrate the incompetence of the current administration. They are already on the back foot, with all the stuff with the Mueller report coming out. They really need a win and a war with Iran won't serve that purpose.

Funny, because all 3 points applied to Iraq in 2003.

1. There was no legal precedent in 2003 either. This is why the USA circumvented the UN.
2. There was no allied support in 2003, that is until the infamous walk in the park between Bush and Blair.
3. Bush was fighting an election for the second term, and his gun toting war mongering attitude bumped him in the approval ratings and he secured a second term.

Which is exactly why it will never happen again. Frankly most Americans outside of elite circles think that they are overcommitted internationally and don't understand why they are involved in all of these messy Middle Eastern wars. A war against Iran might be a breaking point in terms of political support.

Moreover, Iran is much more capable militarily and has a better and more defensible geography than Iraq or Afghanistan. An invasion of Iran will certainly be the largest American overseas campaign since the first gulf war and perhaps likely even larger. Also unlike Iraq and Afghanistan Iran has a formidable amount of asymmetric capabilities that can allow them to strike out at us allies and troops in the region accompanied of course by their missile inventory. A full scale land invasion with hundreds of thousands of American troops will likely see casualties not seen since Vietnam.

The us presidential election is next year and a war that does not bring any sort of visible benefits for the country will be disastrous for Trump. One of the cornerstones of his campaign was pulling out of foreign quagmires and even if he has been halted at that by the establishment the desire to do that evidently still exists, over that thousands of casualties is not going to be pleasing to the voters and convince them to vote for Trump considering the nature of this theoretical campaign.

Your hero claimed many times Iran must be careful, US doesn't hold back etc etc but now his drone has been shot down he chickened out. Dont make threats if you cant carry them out.

It is not chickening out. Trump's focus is economy. He is not going to lead US to an unnecessary war.

When a military with 13K aircrafts engage in a war with a country with barely 500 aircrafts, there's only one possible outcome.

The fact that everyone was eager for confrontation including John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, and Gina Haspel and still then Trump stopped the attack should be commended.

In what reality will Iran beat America in a war?

If you read recent history then US has never won a war because US had never attacked any nation to win a war. So I do not understand your comment.

US can attack Iran and there are plenty of people who wants to attack Iran.

But to give credit to Trump because he wanted to prevent Iranian casualties is probably dumbest thing I've heard and those who fell for it are 'your kind' :)
