"Don't think my career is over, enjoying myself and will continue to play at highest level" : Afridi

KARACHI: Amid speculation that he has sought a farewell match, Pakistan's flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi has said that he is too experienced and seasoned a cricketer to make such a demand and ruled out calling it quits anytime soon.

"I have played 20 years of international cricket for Pakistan and not the PCB. And I am not dependent on anyone for a match. The love and support I have got and get from my well-wishers and fans is enough reward for me," Afridi told the media in Peshawar on Sunday.

The firebrand former Pakistan captain said he would not ask the PCB for any farewell match.

The former captain said India had never responded positively to Pakistan's insistence on playing matches.

PCB's senior official Najam Sethi made it clear in an interview that he had no issues with Afridi and admired his services to Pakistan cricket.

He also insisted that Afridi would be given a befitting farewell by the board when the time came.
Speculations have been rife over whether Afridi will get a chance to play one farewell international match for Pakistan since after he stepped down as captain after the disappointing campaign in the World T20 in India in April.

Initially, Afridi had said he wanted to play a farewell match but has now changed his stance after it emerged that the board backed off on giving Afridi a farewell match in the T20 series in the UAE against the West Indies last October.

Afridi also told the media that he continued enjoying the game of cricket and was very much active in T20 cricket.

"I don't think my career is over and I am enjoying myself and I will continue to play at the highest level. As far as Pakistan selection is concerned that is for the selectors to decide," he said.

Shahid Afridi gives his two cents on politics

Former Pakistan T20I captain Shahid Afridi denied any claims that he will be joining politics in the near future and believes he is already serving people through the Shahid Afridi Foundation.

Afridi was speaking to the media after the prize distribution ceremony in Islamia College Peshawar of Zalmi Super Six tournament and Cyclothon.

“What is the work of a politician?” asked Afridi. “A politician is obliged to serve his people one way or the other — I am doing that through my foundation. Also, my elders haven’t allowed me to enter politics.”

The 36-year-old, who gave up his duties as the captain of the national T20I team after the 2016 World T20, said he is not depending on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for a farewell match.

“I have played 20 years of international cricket for Pakistan, not the PCB,” he said. “And I am not dependent on anyone for a match. The love and support I have gotten and still get from my well-wishers and fans are reward enough for me.”

Afridi then clarified that he is not going to hang up his boots any time soon, and will continue playing domestic cricket.

“I don’t think my career is over; I am enjoying myself and I will continue to play at the highest level,” he said. “As far as playing for Pakistan is concerned, that is for the selectors to decide.”

He also commented on Pakistan’s ongoing series against Australia. “If you will play cricket in Dubai and Abu Dhabi all year long, then don’t expect victories in New Zealand and Australia,” he said. “I think the players should be given similar conditions in Pakistan to practice before going on tour foreign tours. No doubt our Test team has always performed well.”

Afridi also applauded Pakistan’s fightback in the first Test and said it could lay the foundations for success against Australia in the three-Test series.

‘I think the Australia tour in very important,” said Afridi. “The way we played in the first Test was great; we showed fighting spirit. If we continue playing like this, it won’t be difficult to beat Australia.”

Can't be for the money. After representing Pakistan for so long, he must be having difficulties parting ways with the thought of not playing for Pak again. That's all I can think of. Could be an ego thing as well. We all know he is not known for being smart.

I still feel he has cricket left in him for T20's, he's tailor made for that format. ODI's no way :)))

Boss, I think u should retire now. It doesn't matter what other ppl say about u......... U'll always be one of the most popular cricketers of all time........... PPL will never forget ur 37 ball century or the way u helped Pakistan to win countless matches from the jaws of defeat with ur Excellent allround performance.

By playing at the "highest level" he means featuring in the various pyjama franchise leagues around the world.

There is no place for Afridi in international cricket unless its against Kenya and Uganda which is more befitting his level.

This is the reason PCB will not give him a farewell match. PCB will look like fool if Afridi after playing his farewell match says something like 'I performed very well in this match. My next target is to play for Pakistan again.' :inti

These are the sequence of events pretty much, Sharyah MeekMan gave Shahid Flair an ultimatum but Boom Boom had other ideas:

Afridi is definitely the Ric Flair of cricket, he simply doesn't know when to call it quits. However unlike Afridi, Flair actually achieved excellence in his field.

Didn't read his comments, but from title, I can say that he is in right track.

He has definitely identified his level & priority - for him BPL, PSL & CPL are higher than International cricket, so fair enough. Keep entertaining us Lala.

nothing wrong he said. as long as he enjoying his game hell continue to play.

Looks like the farewell/no farewell and retirement/no retirement saga is set to continue for the foreseeable future.

AFRIDI please khuda ka khof karo yaar. I have been watching u since I was a kid..now I'm grown up plz take a retirement. U r no Misbah whose game is totally different than u .Misbah is more mentally stronger & clever operator. U was my favourite plAyer since ages but u have passed ur prime..u should have take retirement after WC 2011

This is farce, a man who played cricket for so long and under achieved repeatedly. What he wants now?
People always remember Misbah who lost the 2007 world T20 cup, but it was this guy who lost it for pakistan by making a first ball duck. He can not perform against India at any level now. Repeatedly, Kohli and Yuvi have thrashed his bowling and well he is not a batsman anymore. I still don't remember when was the last time he scored 50 against them. Lets see what he offered in last 10 years, staring from 2007 T20.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...=6;template=results;type=batting;view=innings

His best is 14 vs India in T20 since 2007. He aggregated 53 runs in 14 innings at an average of 7.33. Wow!!

Now his bowling in T20 vs India:

4 wickets in 8 matches with an economy of 8.36. And out of these 4 wickets he got 3 wickets of tail enders, and only once got wicket of Sehwag when the target was 129 runs.

I still don't know why people are still happy with his come back, because there will be other same kind of below mediocre performance by him against India in world cup and again the same outcome. Any youngster would not be worse than him in a match against India in world cup.

And for that Asia cup game, those 6's were mis-hits and we were lucky that it just cleared rope on that night, otherwise we all know what he was doing.

He was lucky that he played for so long; he does not merit selection even in Zimbabwe team. A complete selfish player, who has made pakistan cricket his own property. Went to India to butter up his IPL prospects, by saying that he is loved more in India. Seriously, this is an absolute humiliation to the entire nation.

He has got more than he was capable of. And therefore, should not be allowed anymore.

Although Afridi is a rubbish player and mediocre for the majority of his career - one cannot deny his star power which our team severely lacks right now...

I do not follow Pak T-20 cricket, so can anybody tell how is his t-20 form? I always thought that he was great T-20 player .

In the same token he was unlucky against India wc11 otherwise he'd have Sachin 2-3 times :afridi

Star power alone has never won a game for any team in any format, ever.

A rubbish player who overstayed his welcome by about 19 years. He can keep playing T20 leagues, but should never play for Pakistan again.

Why are you hyping up Misbah as the savior?

Afridi is mediocre but Misbah is not any better of a player.

STOP!

That is our issue!!

We judge players based on one game. His stats shows he was useless against India in ODIs and T20s. To back him people will go into the history books to see where he perfomed. But the fact is can he contribute or make worse for them by occupying a slot which should have been given to a youngster..
