After having hosted the second half of the 2021 Indian Premier League season and the ICC T20 World Cup, the Dubai Cricket Council has expressed its desire to host India-Pakistan bilateral series and more IPL matches.

Speaking to local media in the UAE, chairman of Dubai Cricket Council Abdul Rahman Falaknaz said that the country could be the perfect neutral venue for the neighbouring Asian giants.

“The best thing would be to get India-Pakistan matches here. When Sharjah used to host India and Pakistan all those years ago, it was like a war. But it was a good war, it was a sporting war and it was fantastic,” said Falaknaz, as quoted in Khaleej Times.

“I remember [Bollywood actor] Raj Kapoor came once with his family. During the awards night, he took the mic and said, ‘How wonderful it is to have these India-Pakistan battles in Sharjah. Cricket brings people together, cricket has brought us together and let us remain this way.'”

“So this is what we would like to do. If we can convince India to come and play here against Pakistan once a year or twice a year, it would be fantastic.”

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2013 owing to political tensions between the neighbours. They have only met in ICC events, the latest coming in the recent T20 World Cup match in Dubai, where Pakistan pummeled India en route to a 10-wicket win.

Even the previous encounter between India and Pakistan was in Dubai in the 2018 Asia Cup.
Both, the IPL and the T20 World Cup were originally scheduled to be held in India, but both tournaments had been moved to the Middle East owing to the unresolved Covid situation in India.

“I'm very proud because the UAE as a whole and especially Dubai in particular hosts anything to the best. And of course, T20 World Cup is also a sign of good organisation. I would say we are lucky to be an alternative to India,” said Falaknaz.

“I am looking forward to host more India-Pakistan matches in Dubai. I will try and convince my friends in the BCCI for the same. If they are ready to play Pakistan, we will be more than happy to offer our venue.”

Falaknaz also spoke about the DCC's aspiration to host a few IPL matches every year, on the lines of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) plan to have a few its games in the UAE next year.

“[The BCCI] have seen our potential. I would invite them to come and hold their IPL, start here and finish in India or start in India and finish in Dubai,” he said.

This year was the third time the IPL bandwagon has travelled to the UAE—in 2014, it was due to the general elections in India and in 2020, it was because of the high Covid cases.

“We gave them a warm reception. It all depends on what the BCCI wants to do. We are very friendly with them,” he said.

Guess money talks!

If the UAE can offer enough financial incentives to both boards then there is a lot of money to be made for the UAE as well.

It's all about the $$$$$s.

Wherever or if it was played, it would generate huge revenue and interest.

Can't see it happening though.

It comes down to politics.

Pak v India is not happening because of the political situation - not for cricketing or security reasons and certainly not for commercial reasons.

Literally the milisecond the political environment allows it, there will be a series. Before you can even take a breath or blink, it will be announced.

Respective boards should host this so that they can earn that revenue rather than hosting at a neutral venue.

Its actually about the votes.

Modi government has build their vote bank based on hate and anti Pakistan. Hence they wont let this happen.

There are 1000 things Modi Govt. has on their agenda to get their votes and similarly 1000 reasons for people to vote against them. Pakistan is probably a part of those 1000 things, not the sole thing.

I don’t see a single tweet or statement from Modi about Pakistan but vice versa is not true. India won vs Pak in WC 2019, did anyone call it a victory of Hinduism? One of Your ministers was taunting India for not qualifying in a cricket WC. I wonder who is more obsessed.

Pakistan itself makes it difficult.

On one hand your ministers make such controversial comments and on the other hand they are willing to play India and India has to reciprocate too as sports and politics are kept aside. How does that work?

There are 100s of things Modi government has built its vote bank on. A hardline stance on pakistan is only one of them.

That Pakistani minister is a joker. I can tell you 99.99% of Pakistanis didnt consider the victory as victory of Islam.

Sidelining Pakistan has always been on top of Modi’s agenda.

There is absolutely no reason to have any cricket in the sweltering heat and horrendous pitches of UAE. If anything there should be cricket in countries that actively play the sport. There are enough candidates in the sub continent and failing those, Zimbabwe or South Africa or Kenya are better options.

I would much rather see cricket in Canada or better yet in Ireland.

India is an existential threat to Pakistan. There should be no cricket with India.
India is an existential threat to any country that it can bully. But that is true for any other country in the world that has any form of hegemonic tendencies that are reinforced by a moderate to successful neocon industrial sector.

Pakistan on the other hand is eating itself and has achieved the level of economic and industrial mediocrity or even stagnation that permits a neighbor like India to bully it. Strengthen your own hand before weakening your opponent I say.

To be fair most Pakistanis, cricket personalities and media came out against the statement.

And he has support of the people for his hardline pakistan approach and thats all that matters.

Modi weak PM. Farm laws repeal. Full majority has. Still Votebank politics important. Don't like. No support of people now. Pakistan or no Pakistan.Next time no modi sarkar.

Mohammad Amir:

"It is a good gesture and we should thank him. But until the governments from the two countries do not sit down to discuss their problems, till then the third parties cannot do anything. It also depends on the cricket boards of both the nations and what their thought process is. If all parties agree, and if there is a bilateral series between India and Pakistan in Dubai, it will be great for the sport"
