Ian Watmore is to step down with immediate effect, it has been announced today.

He has reached a mutual agreement with the Board to stand down following the end of the domestic season and after helping to steer the game through the challenges of Covid over the past year. The decision follows a successful summer of domestic and international men’s and women’s cricket, the launch of The Hundred and record numbers playing the game recreationally.

Ian Watmore commented: "It is with regret that I step down as Chair of the ECB, but I do so in mindfulness of my own wellbeing and that of the game which I love. I was appointed to the post in a pre-pandemic era, but Covid has meant the role and its demands on time are dramatically different to all our original expectations, which has taken a personal toll on me. Given this, the Board and I feel the ECB will be better served by a new Chair to take it forward post pandemic. Leaving now, at the end of the season, gives the Board time to find a new Chair to support cricket through the challenges of the 2022 season and beyond.

“On a personal level, I also retired last month after five years at the Civil Service Commission and recently became a grandfather. I would now like to retire completely from work and enjoy our great game as a spectator.”

During Ian’s tenure the ECB has seen the delivery of a full cricket season along with the successful return of crowds, increased diversity on the ECB Board, the launch of the Disability Premier League and the creation of the Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) to explore matters relating to race, class, and gender in the sport.

Current Deputy Chair, Barry O’Brien, will step-up as interim Chair, having indicated to the Board that he will not be a candidate for the role.

He commented: “We are grateful to Ian for everything he has contributed during his time at the ECB. He has helped guide the game through an incredibly challenging period, where despite the impact of Covid we were able to stage a busy summer of men’s and women’s domestic and international cricket. He also leaves with the recreational game in a strong position, with record numbers playing the game this summer, which I know will please him enormously as a lover of the grass roots of sport. We wish him the best for the future.

“We will shortly begin a process to appoint a new Chair to lead the ECB, as the organisation continues to deliver on its ambitions to grow the game and create an increasingly inclusive and welcoming sport for all.”

Now wouldn't it be ironic if Wasim Khan was appointed Chairman of the ECB!

Good shout

ECB with their token gestures to BLM etc. Wouldn’t be surprised if the next chairperson is a woman from the BAME ethnicity

Ian Whatmore, you will be remembered for using and binning Pakistan

Tom Harrison, you will be remembered for constantly sitting on the lap of BCCI

haha why is rambo breaking this news like he played a part, will be very funny as someone mentioned if wasim khan does take over at the ECB :))

I'm not really sure of what he did at the ECB but I'm sure he will easily be replaced by another civil servant.

That Rambo tweet is just hilarious though. First we had a journalist appointed PCB chief now we have a PCB chief acting like a journalist.

Ramiz is so childish, it’s crazy how these clowns get the top job

I was thinking the same lol. Even during the days of Ijaz Butt, we didn't see such childish antics. He sounds more like a politician than a Chairman of a cricket board.

Okay, no need to go overboard. Ijaz butt was a different specie altogether. No one has touched that level

Immature of Rameez to tweet about this . Getting pleasure from someone else pain .He should focus on his primary job. Seems to be a lacklustre chief.

Why is it Immature for Ramiz to do what he did? These are the same people who lied to him and the world when they cancelled on bogus grounds. They used and binned Pakistan for their purposes.

Good on Ramiz, should not have deleted that Tweet!

Welll rameez is a pakistani so such behavior is normal from us

Would be even better if they picked a BAME woman with little or no relevance to cricket :virat1

Also, fully agree, Harrison has to go but he won't...he may even be promoted.

First vindication of Ramiz Raja as PCB chairman.

Re-upload that tweet!

Pakistanis ( most not all ) need a life , they have such a narrow mentality , quick to criticize and make someone “ childish” or what not . Ramiz is a very active and sincere guy with a clean record , who is at a mission to fix Pakistan cricket and he has only two years at his disposal. Just see how sensibly he spoke to senate committee. Just give him some time before asking to replace him by some robot, please.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) should now think to reschedule their Pakistan tour.

While talking to ARY News after ECB’s chairman Ian Watmore stepped down, Qureshi said this resignation means Pakistan managed to register their stance in the world.

“ECB head’s resignation after all these happenings means we managed to register a strong stance in front of the world after they cancelled Pakistan tour,” FM Qureshi said.

“They should now think of rescheduling Pakistan tour as soon as possible. We gave foolproof security to both New Zealand and England. They should have talked to us before taking such a harsh decision,” he added.

The FM further recalled his meeting with his English counterpart Elizabeth Truss during which he raised the cricket series cancellation matter.

“I talked about this matter with my meeting with Truss. She said it wasn’t the government’s decision. She also assured to raise this matter in front of the ECB,” he concluded.

Some suggesting that Wasim Khan could be the new ECB Chairman!

The information minister who always loves to jump the gun!

Ramiz is PCB chief , he should not comment about other chief’s resignation . Puts him in a bad light as they both are on at par position . Silence would have been the best answer in my opinion.

It just goes to show how Ramiz felt humiliated, belittled and embarrassed by ECB and NZCB. That wasn’t an easy week as a Pakistani. He was given some poor reasoning by the ECB for their cancelling. Maybe he secretly prayed for this to happen and he’s got his wish.

Who knows what went on behind closed doors, and their could have been lots of ugly exchanges between the two that were not disclosed to the public. Whatmore also had an ugly meeting with the Counties chief so it’s not like this man is well composed himself.

Ramiz is thoroughly unprofessional. Amazing nonsense he has been saying for last few weeks. He is already equal to Ijazz Butt in my book. What an embarrassing period ahead.

This looks like a movie theme but in real world things are not unprofessional and childish. Ramiz is the worst chairman we had since Ijaz butt and it has not been even a month. This guy need to zip his mouth because he is uttering some rubbish for last week.

Ramiz is decisive but too over the top.

Needs to lay back just a bit.

England, cricket, BME?. Nailed on to be an Indian. Probably Guha to fill all quota

Undoubtedly nobody can match Ijaz Butt interms of sheer incompetence and just being senile.

But these kind of childish antics are unprecedented from a PCB Chairman

Being decisive isn't always a good thing. Infact it can be counter-productive if you are as arrogant and full of yourself as Ramiz is.

Yes I agree.

On the other hand, he's making some good decisions.

Drop-in pitches, investment talks with businesses, and he has frankly maintained an open stance against fixers and corrupt individuals.

Tom Harrison must go to!

With Ian Whatmore out, Tom Harrison also needs to be shown the door! The decision to cancel Pakistan was not just Whatmore. There are also reports that it was Harrison’s job to inform Wasim Khan, yet he didn’t have the courtesy to call him and left this task to another ECB official whilst taking a ‘holiday’ for that day.

Harrison started to show his hand on the 5th Test day 1 when he was providing BCCI all the excuses they needed to not have to forfeit this Test. Just listen to all his interviews carefully and how the mental health card was already being played by him for the Indian cricketers, the same mental health card that the ECB used for the cancellation of the Pakistan tour, whilst most of their players are still playing IPL!

ECB should not scapegoat one person, and all responsible for the shambolic decision must go. Tom Harrison will drive ECB into another West Indies or New Zealand!

English players do indeed suffer from mental health issues. I mean they are just weak mentally, so that always puts pressure on the management.

Trescothick, Flintoff, Trott, Bairstow(David), Sarah Taylor. They all ended up quitting cricket.

I don't agree. Simply meeting with businesses means nothing if it doesn't lead to something concrete. As for his stance against fixers, I consider it hypocritical as some of his best friends are fixers and corrupt individuals.

Ramiz is so childish, it’s crazy how these clowns get the top job

Gave him the benefit of the doubt after his first twitter storm. But now it's starting to look amateurish.

Lol, maybe Wasim Khan was told that the ECB Chairmanship awaits him. Which explains why he decided to resign rather than suffer from the daily viotrols and politics in the Pakistan Cricket Board

Regardless of whether it is hypocritical, would you not support the stance itself? Surely it's a good thing, regardless of the history of the person pushing it. He's the person in the power and he has a good stance, that's a good thing.

If i think from ECB’s point of view, how can they benefit from Wasim Khan as Chairman? He has most recently been the CEO of PCB so he will constantly be accused of bias towards another country/cricket board. Naa, cant be true - too soon for him to be appointed as ECB Chief.

I'll believe it when I see it. Many PCB Chairmen have talked about cracking down on fixers and corrupt players, only to bring them back after slaps on the wrist. Ramiz likes to talk big but hasn't done anything worth applauding or even acknowledging yet.

His interview with Athers and...I forget who else was there on that morning...anyway it was hilarious. He failed to answer a single question. It was like budget Boris Johnson.

Guha has no administrative experience. Rainford-Brent is better positioned as she is Director of Women’s Cricket at Surrey CCC.

I’d give Alec Stewart the job.

Appointing Alec Stewart is like appointing any other Tory MP as a head of an institution. This isn’t the image ECB wants to portray at the moment.

Strange comment since Stewie isn’t a Tory MP. He’s Director of Cricket at Surrey CCC, so has the administrative experience as well as massive credibility as a player.

That's true as well.

There's no way Azam Khan made the team on merit, clearly Moin Khan was doing some things behind the scenes.

It's actually been refreshing to see the reaction from real England fans, most i have spoken to are still disgusted with their own board over the pull out, that one decision must have kicked off a lot of internal clashes within the board no doubt to make such an impact.
