Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former premier Imran Khan's wives have financial assets worth more than their husbands, the media reported on Thursday.

According to a statement of assets filed for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020 with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Nusrat Shehbaz, the first wife of the Prime Minister, is richer than her husband and owns wealth worth Pakistani Rs 230.29 million. The Prime Minister's wife also owns nine agricultural properties and one house each in Lahore and Hazara divisions.

Apart from the assets, Shehbaz Sharif's wife has significant investments in various sectors, but does not own a vehicle, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The Prime Minister however has wealth worth Rs 104.21 million with a liability of Rs 141.78 million. His assets include 495 kanals (61.875 acres) of agricultural land in Lahore and Sheikhupura, two houses -- one in Murree and the other in Lahore -- while his residence in London is worth around Rs 137.43 million.

He has investments in Pakistan, possesses two vehicles, and has been maintaining around Rs 20 million in bank accounts for several years.

Tehmina Durrani, the Prime Minister's second wife, has assets hovering around Rs 5.76 million for several years. She possesses the same car for the last couple of years, said the report filed with the ECP.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan owns four goats worth Rs 200,000.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief also possesses six properties, the most prominent of which is his 300-kanal (37.5-acre) villa in Banigala, as well as inherited properties, including a house in Lahore’s Zaman Park, around 600 acres of farmland, apart from non-agricultural land.

The cricketer-turned-politician neither owns a vehicle nor property outside Pakistan, does not have any investment, and has more than Rs 60 million in bank accounts, apart from USD 329,196 and 518 pound sterlings in Pakistani foreign currency accounts.

His wife Bushra Bibi’s net worth is Rs 142.11 million.

He also has 19 agriculture and non-agriculture properties, Rs 122.14 million cash in hand or banks, and arms valued at Rs 3 million in the country.

His father Asif Ali Zardari seems to have trimmed his wealth holdings and has off-loaded his Dubai property, as it was not mentioned in the statement. His wealth increased by around Rs 40 million to Rs 714.23 million in 2019-20 compared to the previous year. He owns thousands of acres of agricultural land, 20 horses, hundreds of camels, cows and buffaloes as well as other valuables in the country. He possesses arms worth Rs 16.6 million.

Former foreign minister and PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that the credibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was at stake amid alleged efforts to rig the upcoming by-elections on 20 vacant seats of the Punjab Assembly.

Addressing a news conference in Lahore alongside PTI leaders Dr Yasmin Rashid and Hammad Azhar on Tuesday, Qureshi claimed that Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz would go to any extent to "steal" by-polls as fate of his provincial government depended on this political battle.

“Visible and non-visible hands are playing their part in upcoming by-elections in Punjab. The government is using state machinery to steal by-election, even deputy commissioners are coordinating press conferences. Government officials are harassing the PTI leaders, businessmen and workers,” he alleged.

He added that police officials in civvies have been deployed to monitor the activities of his son Zain Qureshi, who is PTI's candidate for PP-217 Multan.

“Wherever he goes for electioneering officials in civvies chase him. Our talks and activities are being recorded which are later shared with the administration in the evening. If anyone expresses his support for the PTI, they reach their home to ask why you are supporting PTI.”

He said the ECP is an independent institution under the Constitution. However, the present ECP setup has lost its credibility as it takes “dictation” from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership, he claimed.

The PTI leader also claimed that the PML-N has already started pre-poll rigging ahead of by-elections and the Chief Election Commissioner is also aiding the ruling party in this regard. “Such actions put a question mark on the credibility of the institution, which is bound by the Constitution to hold free and fair elections in the country,” he maintained.

“For how long we will continue to demand an independent Election Commission? Whenever elections are held in the country, one or more parties express their reservations. Why cannot we have a system that is acceptable by all," Qureshi asked, adding that the PTI was ready to negotiate on the issue of electoral reforms with the government in the greater national interest.

Qureshi asked the ECP to prove its neutrality and provide the nation with a free and fair election as it is the need of the hour. People of Pakistan will not accept results if the polls were rigged this time, he warned.

Soon after his allegations, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) took notice of his presser and sought an immediate report from the provincial election commissioner on the alleged violation of code of conduct in the Punjab by-polls.

He also directed the ECP officials to investigate the Qureshi’s claims regarding violations in all 20 constituencies including Multan and take strict action if anyone found guilty.
