Imran Khan's rivals, Shehbaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari, form the Pakistan government

This decision will backfire for sure because Gandapur is not eligible, there are far better options PTI has. He will become another Buzdar for IK.

I think there is more to it.

Gendapur is wanted for 9th May? Why hasn’t the police arrested him yet? Why was his name even allowed in the elections as a candidate? How did he win without campaigning?

He got arrested initially but was released on bail later on. However, right after his nomination for the CMship in KPK Lahore police announced that they would arrest him in the 9 May case.

When a convicted person can be brought back from london and made him win elections so compare to that one this is still a very small case, anything can happen here in Pakistan.

Gandapur might have lobbied agianst the other members so that he can get named for CM. This guy is pretty aggressive.

Contenders emerge for top slots as partners talk

‘New-old partners’ in the prospective ruling coalition spent a busy Wednesday poring over the modalities of their power-sharing agreement, as a number of names emerged for key constitutional positions that would be doled out to the alliance’s component parties, chiefly the PPP and PML-N.

Stalwarts from the two parties put their heads together to discuss the finer points of the power-sharing agreement, while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari chaired a meeting of his party’s contact and coordination committee ahead of its rendezvous with their counterparts in the PML-N.

A PTI leader, meanwhile, claimed to have been approached by PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari to seek their support to form a coalition government, a claim which was denied by the PPP.

It was all but confirmed on Tuesday that Shehbaz Sharif would be the next prime minister and Mr Zardari would head to the Presidency.

It has now emerged that former speakers Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Yousuf Raza Gilani have shown an interest in re-taking the position, sources said.

A source in the PPP said that although Mr Gilani has won a National Assembly seat from Multan, Mr Zardari has asked him not to vacate his seat in the Senate to join the National Assembly.

Although Maryam Nawaz has been nominated for the post of Punjab CM, three names have also come forth for the coveted office of Sindh chief minister, with PPP leaders Faryal Talpur, Nasir Shah and Murad Ali Shah all in the hunt.

Consultations

According to representatives of both the PPP and PML-N, members of their respective contact and coordination committees held a consultative meeting, in which proposals on lowering inflation and unemployment and poverty alleviation were discussed.

Both sides also agreed on the need for a stable democratic government in Pakistan to deal with economic, political, legal and security challenges, a PPP statement said.

Both sides are also due to meet again today (Thursday), a huddle that is expected to feature PML-N representatives N from other provinces as well.

PPP Information Secretary Faisal Karim Kundi told a private TV channel on Wednesday that the party was sticking to its stance that it would support the PML-N in forming the government, but will not become a part of the federal cabinet. This approach has already invited protestations from PML-N notables such as Rana Sanaullah and Ahsan Iqbal.

Talking to DawnNews, PPP leader Syed Khursheed Shah said the PPP will not go for federal ministries, but would prefer to take up the chairmanship of standing committees in the National Assembly.

“The ministries which will go to the PML-N, we will go for those standing committees,” he said, adding that committees are more powerful than ministries.

Zardari’s offer to PTI?

Separately, PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat claimed on Wednesday that PPP leader Asif had attempted to reach out to the PTI through ‘middlemen’

“The party’s leadership held a discussion over [Zardrai’s move] last night. The PPP hinted that the PTI can get its seats back under the due process of law,” Mr Marwat said.

He said he would discuss the offer in a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail today (Thursday).

However, PPP’s Kundi rejected the PTI claims, telling Geo News: “If this is the PTI’s official stance, then a serious person should come forward and talk about it.”

The PPP leader said that the PTI was resorting to “making things up” after realising that there was no way for it to form a government in the Centre. “If we had reached out to the PTI, we would have done it through proper channels,” he added.

Summoning next NA session

According to Article 91 (2) of the Constitution, the president is duty bound to summon a fresh session of the National Assembly within 21 days of polling day, i.e. by Feb 29. On the first day of the session, members will take oath, while the election of a new speaker and deputy speaker will take place on the second day. A leader of the house will be elected on the third day.

In the same vein, Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi said on Wednesday said the inaugural session of the new National Assembly would be summoned in accordance with the law.

“I need to sign the summary for the NA session as I also hold the portfolio of minister for the parliamentary affairs,” Mr Solangi said while responding to reporters’ queries outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The minister said the ECP was required to issue official results within 14 days of the elections, in accordance with the law.

“The last date for convening the NA session is February 29 and it can be summoned on any day before it,” he said.

To a query, he said legal forums were available for redressal of grievances regarding elections and justice should prevail if any violations were committed. Those who had complaints in that regard should reach out the legal forums for justice, he added.

It will be very interesting to see the first Parliamentary session in the National Assembly. Surely, Shahbaz Sharif will take the oath of Prime Minister of Pakistan in the presence of a vibrant opposition consisting of PTI-MWM, JUIF, and other minor party members.

I remember how Imran Khan was jeered and made fun of during the 2018 NA session after he was elected as a PM. It was the PMLN members who exhibited extremely disruptive behavior in the NA session, by jeering and disturbing Imran Khan's first speech as Prime Minister, and even not allowing him to speak properly.

I hope PTI will do the same; they are numerous in number and should not allow this 'selected' Sharif and PPP members to have an easy time in the NA. They should register their protest within the bounds of the rules.

Very interesting times ahead in NA sessions

Clarity on coalition’s power-sharing formula likely today

A scheduled second round of talks between the Contact and Coordination Committees (CCCs) of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) could not take place on Thursday, as both sides sought more time to assess proposals that came up in their first meeting.

The next huddle between the two sides is likely to take place today (Friday).

The PPP has assured the Nawaz league of its support in the formation of a government as well as the election of the next prime minister, on the condition that the PML-N will support them in elections to key constitutional offices.

However, given the tough competition between individuals, nominating people to fill those coveted spots is proving to be a tough nut to crack for PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Sources said that although former PM Yousuf Raza Gilani was in contention for National Assembly speaker, he had been instructed to retain his Senate seat, indicating that he may be fielded for the slot of Senate chairman.

Meanwhile, former opposition leader Khursheed Shah’s name has been floated for the post of speaker, as word within party circles is that the custodians of both houses may hail from Sindh.

On the flip side, the PML-N is said to have named another former speaker, Ayaz Sadiq, as their nominee for the position.

Engagement with PTI?

Meanwhile, PPP Information Secretary Faisal Karim Kundi has said that the PTI has not made any contact with the party for political reconciliation so far. He said the PTI had announced that it will make contact with all political forces, including the PPP, but said the party has yet to reach out to them.

“If PTI has any suggestion, it should meet the six-member coordination committee and then these suggestions will come to the top leadership for consideration,” he added.

On Thursday, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari was briefed by members of the PPP’s CCCs about contacts with political parties at Zardari House. The meeting was attended by Qamar Zaman Kaira, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Saeed Ghani and other leaders.

Meanwhile, an independent candidate from PP-89 Bhakkar, Ameer Muhammad Khan, announced his intention to join the PPP.

I have a strong feeling that whatever is happening in last 2 days is based on some script made up by establishment. They just want to neutralise IK support. Appointment of Gandapur and selection of Ayub is part of an establishment plan to counter PTI and IK. IK is in jail and they can pressurise him in taking decisions and nobody will know anything.

PPP seeks share in Punjab for backing ‘N’ in Centre

The PPP has linked its support to PML-N in the Centre with its participation in the Punjab government, while Nawaz league stalwarts have publicly opposed moves to form a government that would be like a ‘crown of thorns’ for them.

A source in the PPP told Dawn that the party had asked PML-N that all other matters would be decided between them later, the N-League would first have to give it “some space” in the Punjab set-up.

Following this demand, the scheduled meeting of the contact and coordination committees of both sides could not take place on Friday, with the PML-N seeking one more day to sit together on Saturday.

“Members of the PML-N’s committee went to Lahore on Friday to get response of the party’s high command on the PPP’s demand. They will return from Lahore tomorrow and the meeting between the two sides will take place at 3pm on Saturday,” the source said.

The sources explained that the PPP had linked its support to the N-League even regarding formation of the latter’s government in the Centre and election of the prime minister with PPP’s participation in Punjab government.

Several attempts were made to contact PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb to take her party’s point of view on the matter, but she did not respond to requests for comment.

In Punjab, the PML-N has emerged the single largest party in Feb 8 election with 137 general seats and likely to form its provincial government with party’s chief organiser Maryam Nawaz being new chief minister of Punjab.

The PPP bagged 10 seats of the provincial assembly in Punjab and emerged as the third major party there, while the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) stood second with 116 seats.

Sources said both sides in its meeting on Saturday were also expected to discuss the modalities for the formation of the provincial government in Balochistan, where the PPP had grabbed the maximum number of seats in the Feb 8 elections.

Interestingly, both the PPP and PML-N that stood second there had claimed to form their coalition government in Balochistan. “The issue of Balochistan will be settled later. At first, we have to get breathing space in Punjab,” a PPP source said.

Responding to a question, he said the PPP had so far not finalised the names of its candidate for the offices of the speaker of National Assembly and Senate chairman.

‘Crown of thorns’

Meanwhile, two PML-N stalwarts came out publicly in opposition to their party’s efforts to form a government in the Centre, saying that the party had no desire to place this “crown of thorns on its head”.

In a late-night tweet, Khwaja Saad Rafique clearly indicated that he was not in favour of joining a federal coalition government.

“No one has absolute majority in the present National Assembly. The formation of the federal government is the joint responsibility of all the parties in the parliament, not the PML-N.”

“Independent members supported by PTI should take the initiative, form a joint central government with the PPP… We will congratulate you. PML N has no desire to decorate this crown of thorns on its head,” he wrote in a post-midnight tweet, posted on his official X account.

Earlier, PML-N’s Mian Javed Latif had expressed similar thoughts, urging his party to let the PTI form the government as it has majority in the lower house.

Writing on X, Mr Latif said the party (PTI) which was given a majority in the Feb 8 polls should be allowed to form the government.

“By doing so, the country can be saved from anarchy. If this decision is taken [by PML-N], then I will reveal for whom rigging was committed and who was the mastermind,” he wrote.

With PPP against Dar given finance ministry should PMLN forms the govt. Now during NLeague executive meeting Dar was against making federal govt. and only focusing on Punjab Govt., look at the self centred approach of these money launderers, Dar has been humiliated and if PTI comes into power in near future Dar along with Sharif will face a staunch trial because the bar has been set by QFE and Co.

PML-N dragging feet on govt formation

The PML-N is apparently dragging its feet on forming a government in the center despite the alleged assurances by the PPP-P, the second largest party in the National Assembly, of unconditional support. However, the party has also not given any hint about a possible change of hearts with regard to leading the future coalition government at the federal level.

“We have offered the PML-N time and again to form a government in the Center but they are deliberately delaying it. I don’t understand why the PML-N is doing so,” said a PPP-P leader after the third meeting between the two parties held to decide terms and conditions of a possible alliance on Saturday.

Responding to speculations that the PPP-P was still demanding that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto should be made the prime minister, he said “such a thing has not been discussed at all in the meetings”. He said the PPP-P has even declined the PML-N’s offer to lead the government after two and a half years.

“We have been saying PML-N is the majority party in NA and it should form the government,” he said, adding “PPPP is still ready to give vote to the PML-N’s candidate for the PM’s slot.” Additionally, he reiterated that PPPP is not yet interested in becoming a part of the upcoming federal government.

He said the PML-N has yet to respond to the PPP-P’s other proposals, including its demand that the office of the president should be given to the PPP-P along with the office of Senate chairman and National Assembly speaker.

Another PPP-P leader confirmed that the PPP-P has not demanded a prime ministerial position for Bilawal, saying the party is sticking to its “principle position” and arguing on the points that Bilawal and PPP-P President Asif Ali Zardari have already shared in their recent press talks.

He, however, rejected the impression that the matter was being dragged on, stating that both the sides would consult with their leadership and meet on Monday again. “Things are expected to reach a conclusion by Monday.”

Both the PPP-P leaders refrained from sharing specifics, saying they were under oath. Several leaders of the PML-N were also approached for comments but no one was available.

Meanwhile, a joint declaration issued after the coordination committees of both parties met in Islamabad stated that detailed discussions took place regarding government formation.

It added that significant progress was made on various issues; however, the two sides decided to sit again on Monday to finalize matters.

“The proposals put forth by both parties were thoroughly discussed, and while substantial progress was achieved, further deliberations are required to finalize the matters at hand,” the joint statement read.

Emphasizing the importance of a robust democratic government for Pakistan’s stability, the committee members concurred on the necessity of reaching a consensus.

Two other PPP-P leaders who are part of the coordination committee formed to work out power sharing modalities revealed the PML-N has made no mention of its concerns, if any, against formation of a coalition government.

The PML-N, whose senior leaders’ recent statements suggest that the party was having second thoughts about forming a coalition government, was still working out modalities with the PPP-P on how to smoothly run the assembly business, and on how to reconcile differences over handling government affairs between the two parties, if and when they arise.

This blowing hot and cold by PML-N seems to be an attempt by its leadership to keep the option open to withdraw from this arrangement in a dignified manner if needed. However, thus far it seems that Shehbaz led PML-N is in no mood to give up on its aspirations of forming a federal government.

According to a statement issued by the party, the committee has agreed that a strong democratic government guarantees a stable Pakistan. It said that both sides to give matters a final shape have sought more suggestions that will be deliberated upon on Monday.

Some PML-N leaders said the party is not ready to get blackmailed on agreeing to any unconstitutional demand, which is why it is not interested in forming a government.

A day back all media houses had reported that the party leaders in a meeting presided over by Nawaz Sharif loudly advocated against forming a coalition government in the center and laid emphasis on focusing solely on Punjab.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Sardar Bahadur Khan, who is part of the PPP-P’s talks committee, said his party has in principle agreed to support the PML-N, and the PML-N is very much interested in forming its government. Nothing has been said to indicate otherwise, he added.

He denied the impression that the PPP wants any ministries in Punjab. He said the PPP indeed wants its political interests in the province to be guarded but is not asking for any ministries.

Regarding senate seats, he said given that they would expect the PML-N to support them to get some Senate seats, that as per numbers they are entitled to.

When asked what positions the PPP-P was asking for, he said that the party wanted constitutional portfolios—the positions of the president, the Senate chairman, the National Assembly speaker. Governorship would be decided with mutual consent, he added.

He said there was no disagreement between the two sides. “The PPP-P will support the PML-N on all important matters including budget, as has already been said by Chairman Bilawal.”

Qamar Zaman Kaira, another member of the PPP delegation, said the media was being a bit over anxious regarding formation of a government, which, he said, will be formed on its own time.

Regarding the PML-N having given any indication to suggest they were not interested in taking the government, he also said that PML-N has given no such hint.

He said the PML-N has the PPP-P’s unconditional support so these meetings are not being held to determine any power sharing formula. “The PPP has already stated that it will not be part of the federal government. The PPP’s support for PMLN is to ensure democratic process in Pakistan does not derail.”

A PPP leader said if the PML-N was not interested in forming a government, as some of its leaders have suggested then it should request the PPP-P to take the lead. He said the PPP-P has the potential and the capability to steer the country out of all the crises.

He said if it gets the chance, the PPP-P will seize this opportunity as it knows that it can reach out to independent candidates for smooth function of assembly business.

“The PML-N only have us to bank on, whereas the PPP would have not only the PML-N but also the PTI backed candidates to reach out to. So we would be in a much more comfortable position. If this happens, the PPP will offer the presidency to the PML-N.”

PML-N’s Ahsan Iqbal and Ayaz Sadiq were approached for the comments but were not available.

Logjam will stay for more until both of the parties stop thinking about their individual benefits. The only agenda of these meetings is to put forwards their personal benefits in front of each other so they can look into how it is possible to achieve it.

PML-N, PPP fail to break logjam

The fifth round of talks between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) ended without leading to a breakthrough on points of contention, leaving the formation of government at the Centre delayed for at least another day, it emerged on Tuesday.

The formation of a central government is hanging in the balance as the PML-N is delaying decision on the proposals forwarded by the PPPP.

The inter-party meetings between the two sides are being held to decide the terms and conditions of a possible alliance at the Centre.

So far, both sides have failed to reach any conclusion and the matter has now been delayed till Tuesday (today).

In talks, the PPPP has been demanding that the office of the president should be given to it along with the Senate chairman and National Assembly speaker seats.

In response, the PPPP while announcing that it will not take any portfolios will support the PML-N’s candidate for the premiership.

The PML-N, however, has not yet responded to the PPPP’s demands. However, it wants the PPPP to join the federal cabinet and take ownership of the decisions instead of just simply sitting on the treasury benches as silent spectators.

On Monday, both sides met behind closed doors and continued deliberating on pending issues for over three hours.

Both the sides are expected to meet again on Tuesday. The meeting, held at the residence of senior PML-N leader Senator Ishaq Dar at the Parliament Lodges in Islamabad, saw the participation of prominent figures from both the parties.

The PPP delegation comprised Murad Ali Shah, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Nadeem Afzal Chan and others.
Meanwhile, the PML-N leadership met with the leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) to seek their support for the formation of the federal government.

In a statement, the MQM-P spokesperson said that the party has sought a pledge from the PML-N on its three-point constitutional amendments to join the government.

The MQM-P’s three constitutional amendments deal with local government autonomy.

In its manifesto, the party has shared the draft of the bill as well. It stated that it is imperative that in order to instill a truly representative and participatory democracy quintessentially, the local governments at grass root levels, throughout the country, are to be empowered politically, financially, and administratively, so that the fruits of democracy are extended for the benefit of the populace.

In the meeting on Monday, discussions on other issues, including creating a common strategy to deal with the challenges being faced, were discussed. Various other issues focusing on how to get the people of Pakistan, especially Sindh, out of the mire of problems were deliberated upon.

The party statement said that it is the responsibility of all the parties to solve the problems faced by the country and to get out of the crises.

“Giving constitutional protection to the devolution of powers and resources at the grassroots level is the top priority of MQM Pakistan,” the spokesperson said.

He said that the leaders of both the parties agreed to continue talks and meetings regarding the government formation.

Following the PML-N and the MQM-P meeting, Sindh governor and MQM-P leader Kamran Tessori engaged in an informal dialogue with journalists, reiterating the parties’ unified stance in navigating the complexities of government formation.

Reportedly, Tessori affirmed, “We stand united in the challenging task of government formation. The MQM-P has assured full support, and we anticipate the issuance of an official declaration later today.”

Despite multiple rounds of talks, a decision regarding the PPP’s inclusion in the cabinet remained elusive. Optimism, however, persists within the PML-N circles, with sources expressing confidence that an agreement with the PPP will be reached soon.

Speaking informally to reporters after the meeting, PML-N leader Azam Nazir Tarar conveyed a positive trajectory in the ongoing discussions, asserting that talks with the PPP committee would resume the next morning.

He hinted at predetermined aspects concerning the PPPP’s integration into the federal cabinet.

Power-sharing breakthrough: Zardari named president, Shehbaz as PM in PPP-PML-N deal

After rounds of negotiations and discussions, the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have reached a comprehensive power-sharing agreement, heralding a new chapter in the country's political landscape.

Under the terms of the agreement, Asif Zardari, the seasoned leader of the PPP, will ascend to the presidency, marking a significant return to national leadership for the party.

In another key development, the position of Chairman Senate will be entrusted to the People's Party, underscoring their growing influence in the upper echelons of government.

Moreover, the presidency, a symbol of national authority, will also be vested in the hands of the PPP, reaffirming their pivotal role in shaping the country's future trajectory.

Conversely, the prestigious position of Prime Minister will be held by the PML-N, reflecting their enduring prominence in Pakistani politics and governance.

In a bid to ensure regional representation and inclusivity, the post of Chief Minister of Balochistan will be allocated to the PPP, empowering them to address the province's unique challenges and aspirations.

Additionally, sources indicate that the Speaker of the National Assembly will hail from the ranks of the PML-N, further cementing their position in the legislative realm. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Senate, a pivotal parliamentary role, will be appointed from the PPP, ensuring a balanced distribution of authority.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari addresses joint press conference

Addressing a joint press conference flanked by PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed gratitude for the completion of the committee’s arduous work formed by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

He announced that both parties now possess the necessary numbers to form the government, emphasizing their commitment to leading Pakistan out of its current crisis, adding that the coalition between the PPP and PML-N had successfully gathered the necessary numbers to form the government.

Bilawal acknowledged the limited numbers of the Sunni Ittehad Council, paving the way for the PPP and PML-N to collaborate in steering Pakistan out of its current crisis.

The PPP chairman also invoked divine assistance to overcome internal and external challenges, pledging their commitment to fulfill the people's expectations.

The Bhutto scion expressed hope for Shahbaz Sharif's return as Prime Minister and invoked prayers for divine assistance in resolving internal and external challenges.

He mentioned that following the Prime Minister’s election, the President of Pakistan will deliver a speech. We will confront these challenges collectively and strive to meet the people’s expectations. Once more, I extend my gratitude to all, particularly to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Shehbaz Sharif

Prime Minister-designate Shehbaz Sharif expressed appreciation for the attending journalists, extending thanks to President Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto for their contributions to the crucial occasion.

Sharif mentioned the message sent to independent members, encouraging them to form the government with enthusiasm, showcasing their majority to the nation. He assured wholehearted acceptance and congratulations in such a scenario.

He underscored the importance of effective governance, stating that the opposition, despite alliances, lacks the necessary numbers to lead the government.

The PML-N president mentioned that the committee, formed in collaboration with the PPP, engaged in multiple rounds of discussions, and each session yielded positive outcomes. Today, as we sit here, I am pleased to share that, alongside the PPP, we have the necessary majority, positioning us to establish a new government. I extend my gratitude to Asif Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto for their unwavering cooperation, and I am also thankful to Nawaz Sharif for his leadership and guidance, making this achievement possible.

Recognizing the significant challenges Pakistan is currently confronting, before delving into those discussions, I would like to emphasize that this alliance has collectively decided, with the grace of Almighty God, that we possess the required majority to unanimously elect Asif Zardari as the president. I express my appreciation to other coalition parties in this alliance, including MQM, IPP, and Q-League.

Sharif emphasized that all our allies are not only committed to voting for these positions but also to taking unified steps through consultation. The challenges facing our nation today are immense.

He said, “The resurgence of terrorism has claimed the lives of countless brothers and sisters in KP and Balochistan, including the valiant forces of Pakistan and as an alliance, we must confront this menace head-on.”

“Furthermore, we are resolved to combat inflation and revitalize the economy, fostering increased domestic production for sustainable economic growth and prosperity nationwide. Our objective is to provide modern educational opportunities to the younger generation, equipping them with expertise in information technology,” he said adding that this will enable them to become the architects of our nation’s future, securing employment opportunities not only within Pakistan but also abroad, thereby contributing significantly to the country's development.

The president of PML-N also emphasized that after 76 years, it is concerning that countries are still burdened by debt. This issue must be addressed urgently, and we must dedicate ourselves tirelessly to this cause. These challenges demand a journey of sacrifice and dedication. It is not merely about acquiring government positions or ministries; rather, it is about saving Pakistan from its current difficulties and setting it on the path to prosperity.

Asif Zardari

Asif Zardari affectionately referred to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as 'Prince Charming' and expressed, "We want to assure you that our endeavor is for all Pakistanis, for the nation, and for future generations. Our goal is to lead Pakistan out of its challenges. My sisters, mothers, and daughters will also join in prayer."

JUI F is playing on both sides of the wicket now.

MQM-P wants four ministries as JUI-F also seeks role in Centre

A day after the PML-N and the PPP evolved a consensus on a power-sharing deal to run the country for the next five years, a delegation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) called on PML-N representatives and demanded three to four ministries in the federal cabinet.

Sources said the MQM wanted the slot of the deputy speaker in the National Assembly, but the PML-N had already given it to the PPP. Now, the MQM is insisting on four portfolios in the federal cabinet since the party cannot have its deputy speaker.

In addition to its share in the cabinet, the MQM demanded legislation to empower the local government bodies, a demand long held by the Karachi-based party for devolution of powers.

MQM Punjab leader Muhammad Zahid told Dawn that the PML-N agreed to retain incumbent Kamran Tessori as the Sindh governor. “It has been agreed that Mr Tessori will remain the governor,” Mr Zahid said.

The MQM delegation was led by Mr Tessori and included Farooq Sattar and Mustafa Kamal, whereas the PML-N side included Ishaq Dar and Ayaz Sadiq.

JUI-F meets PML-N

On the other hand, a meeting was held between the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and the PML-N, in which the plan to form the provincial government, probably led by PPP’s Sarfaraz Bugti, was discussed.

Media reports claimed that Ishaq Dar had told JUI-F leader Abdul Ghafoor Haideri that the JUI-F was too late to come to the PML-N for a power-sharing deal in Balochistan. Mr Dar told the JUI-F leader that the PML-N had already made plans with the PPP for the government formation in Balochistan.

These reports, however, were denied by PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb. In a statement, the PML-N information secretary said that a meeting between the two parties was held on Wednesday and an official statement was also issued on it.

The participants of the meeting decided that the challenges faced by Balochistan demanded a “strong democratic government” in the province, she said. The meeting decided that it was in the country’s interest for various political forces to sit together in Balochistan. Marriyum Aurangzeb said the political ties between the two parties were based on mutual understanding.

Outlook for coalition

Insiders told Dawn the PPP would not join the federal cabinet and that the NA speaker slot would go to the PML-N as per the deal reached between the two parties.

They claimed that the Senate chairmanship would go to the PPP, with Senator Yousaf Raza Gilani being tipped as the next chairman. The governorships in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab will also go to the PPP, and the Sindh governorship will go to the MQM.

Sources said that the PML-N and the PPP would jointly form a government in Balochistan, and Sarfaraz Bugti “is so far” the most likely contender for the CMship. In the Senate, the PML-N will get the slot of the deputy chairman whereas in the lower house, the deputy speaker will be from the PPP.

According to Article 91(2) of the Constitution, the first session of the National Assembly has to be summoned by Feb 29. On the first day of the NA session, after taking oath, members will elect the speaker and deputy speaker through a secret ballot. Following this, the new speaker will announce the schedule for the election of the PM. In the 336-strong house, 169 votes are required for the PM’s election.

The election of the president will take place soon after the completion of the process of the government formation in the Centre and provinces as well as the Senate elections due in the first week of March. Incumbent president Arif Alvi’s five-year term expired in September last year but he is serving an extended period till the election of his successor.

MQM-P team discusses power-sharing formula with Shehbaz

An MQM-P delegation called on PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif here on Friday and discussed a power-sharing formula with him.

The delegation from Karachi comprised Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Farooq Sattar and Mustafa Kamal.

The MQM-P reportedly came to meet Mr Sharif, who is the candidate of six parties for the post of the prime minister, to get his assurance that the party will get ‘reasonable share’ in the upcoming government.

The Sindh governor’s slot is expected to go to MQM-P. Besides, the MQM-P wants some important ministries.

According to a statement issued by the PML-N after the meeting, the visiting MQM-P team and Mr Sharif discussed mutual cooperation.

Talking to the MQM-P delegation, Mr Shehbaz Sharif said that the mandate of every party should be respected.

“We should respect the mandate of every party. It is the duty of every one to steer the country out of the economic crisis. We need to prefer the national interest over political interest,” he said.

The MQM-P team said that under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif, the country would overcome the problems it was facing today.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Balochistan Awami Party comprising Khalid Magsi, Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and Senator Kahda Babar also met Mr Shehbaz Sharif.

The leadership of the two parties agreed to continue supporting each other to face the challenges.

“We all will have to sit together to steer the country out of crisis, especially the economic one,” Mr Sharif said, adding that the country could not afford anarchy. He promised to work day and night to give relief to the masses.

PML-N has cabinet surprises up its sleeve

As the process of the formation of the new federal government will kick off from Thursday (today) with the inaugural session of the National Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif, the PML-N president and prime minister-in-waiting, is engaged with the party leadership to finalise his cabinet.

The party is tight-lipped, but insiders told The Express Tribune on Wednesday that several names had been shortlisted for the key cabinet slots.

The first batch of ministers will be sworn in the moment Shehbaz takes charge as the premier next week.

As the PML-N, PPP and MQM-P have the required number, Shehbaz's election as the next premier is a foregone conclusion.

Given that the PPP will not join the cabinet to begin with, many other ministers will likely be allotted more than one portfolio.

The move is aimed at leaving the option open for the PPP to join the cabinet later.

Although there is no official confirmation yet, sources said it was likely that PML-N’s Attaullah Tarar would be appointed as the federal information minister.

The outspoken PML-N leader defeated PPP co-chairman and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari in the race for a Lahore NA seat.

Rana Sanaullah, who lost the polls, may return as the interior minister after being elected as a senator or winning an NA slot in the by-polls for the seats to be vacated by those who emerged victorious in more than one constituency.

There is no clarity yet about who will take the most crucial ministry of finance given the enormous economic challenges faced by the country.

The veteran Ishaq Dar is still in contention but there is opposition to his appointment both from outside and some from within the party.

Some sources claimed that Dar could be appointed as the foreign minister given his close relationship with PML-N supremo and three-time former premier Nawaz Sharif.

They added that as Pakistan needed financial support from its usual friends including Saudi Arabia, the UAE and China, Dar as the potential foreign minister could play a crucial role.

As he has been dealing with these countries as the finance minister, Dar, if given the portfolio of the foreign ministry, can use his experience to help secure funds for the government.

Khawaja Asif is another potential candidate for the post of the foreign minister.

However, the sources said these were proposals at this stage and the final list of ministers might look different.

Another option is to keep the post of the foreign minister vacant and instead appoint either an adviser or special assistant.

Syed Tariq Fatemi, a former diplomat and long-term aide of Nawaz, may be assigned that position.

The idea is mooted to hand over the post to Bilawal if the PPP decides to join the cabinet.

Bilawal served as the foreign minister for 16 months during the previous coalition government.

The sources said the PML-N would finalise the names in the next few days and also decide which ministries would be given to the MQM-P.

PTI fields Mehmood Khan Achakzai as candidate for presidency against Zardari

Ahead of the crucial presidential elections, the Sunni Ittehad Council has decided to nominate Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party President Mehmood Khan Achakzai as their candidate for the top constitutional position.

Sources close to the party had earlier revealed that Achakzai, a prominent political figure known for his advocacy for Pashtun rights and his anti-establishment narrative, would be formally announced as the SIC's nominee for the presidency. This move signifies the council's commitment to presenting a candidate who they believe embodies their values and aspirations for the nation.

Later, the Sunni Ittehad Council submitted the nomination papers of its presidential candidate, Mehmood Khan Achakzai, in the Islamabad High Court. His proposer was SIC-backed PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan, who was accompanied to the high court by other party leaders Omar Ayub Khan, Latif Khosa and Amir Dogar.

At the court, Khosa addressed the chief justice, saying they thought he would call them in the chamber and offer tea.

CJ Aamir Farooq said tea could be served after this as well. He added that Omar Ayub and Ali Muhammad Khan had come to court for the first time.

Khan said he had been coming to seek justice, while Khosa said Ayub had appeared for the first time.

Earlier, sources within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which decided to ally with the SIC after its party symbol was withdrawn from it, had indicated a strategic approach towards the presidential elections. They had decided against conceding the electoral arena to the PPP's Asif Ali Zardari, who is the candidate for the country's president, on behalf of the multi-party coalition that is set to form government at the Centre.

The sources had suggested that the PTI was actively considering fielding its own candidate for the presidency, underscoring the party's determination to play a significant role in shaping the country's leadership. However, the sources had dismissed the possibility of selecting a candidate from Punjab or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, opting instead to explore options from Sindh or Balochistan.

It was reported that the PTI's legal team is gearing up to submit the nomination papers of the presidential candidate, reflecting the party's meticulous preparations for the upcoming electoral process.

On Friday, Sunni Ittehad Council leader Sher Afzal Marwat hinted at Achakzai being nominated as the party's candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

Speaking to host Kiran Naz in a Samaa TV show, Marwat had said: "There is a possibility that we can field Mahmood Khan Achakzai for the president slot. I have no idea whether the message had been delivered to Mahmood Khan Achakzai in this regard."

On Friday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had announced the schedule for the presidential elections. As per the schedule, the candidates can submit their nomination papers till 12 noon on March 2.

The returning officer will scrutinize the nomination papers on March 4 at 10am and the final list of candidates will be displayed on March 5 at 1pm.

“Polling for the presidential election will be held on March 9 from 10am to 4pm, while polling will be held in the Parliament House and the four provincial assemblies,” the election schedule stated.

Nawaz Sharif remains decision-maker, to play ‘factual’ role in govt formation: Khawaja Asif

PML-N leader Khawaja Asif has made it clear that party supremo Nawaz Sharif will remain the decision-maker even without the premiership. Speaking on a Geo News programme ‘Capital Talk’, the former defence minister said Nawaz would have a “factual role” in the formation of the government and afterwards. “Obviously, Shehbaz has the support of Nawaz,” he said. “Nawaz is the Quaid. Even if he doesn’t become PM, every last decision will be his.”

Asif maintained that apart from some, most of the general elections in the country have been controversial. “Despite this, things did move forward. I feel the system should not be disrupted,” he said. “Even we have reservations in these elections. You cannot say fair and free polls were held.”

In response to a question, Asif said there would always be a risk of PPP “pulling the rug”, adding that PML-N has initiated talks with PPP leaders over this. “Once the way to get the economy on track is achieved, a way for political stability will also be found,” he added.

They're just kidding themselves at this point now. Nawaz Sharif remains decision-maker?? Is that why at the last moment they made Malik Ahmed Khan, the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly even though PMLN publicly announced another name for Speaker of Punjab Assembly? We all know who the real decision-maker is

PPP’s Sarfraz Bugti takes oath as new Balochistan CM

PPP leader Sarfraz Bugti has taken oath as the next chief minister of Balochistan.

He was administered the oath by Balochistan Governor Abdul Wali Kakar today.

I think there is more to it.

Gendapur is wanted for 9th May? Why hasn’t the police arrested him yet? Why was his name even allowed in the elections as a candidate? How did he win without campaigning?

This decision will backfire for sure because Gandapur is not eligible, there are far better options PTI has. He will become another Buzdar for IK.
and Maryam Nawaz is eligible because??

New Balochistan govt to be run over philosophy of ‘reconciliation’: Bilawal

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that the new Balochistan government will be run according to (late) Benazir Bhutto’s last book that spoke about “reconciliation”.

Addressing a press conference alongside newly elected Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, the PPP chief was of the view that no single political party could alone resolve all the issues of the country’s largest province.

“We should all work together,” he said. Bilawal expressed hope that CM Bugti will visit Gwadar on his first trip because of the devastation caused by heavy rainfall there.

The PPP chief added that the new Balochistan government will fight terrorists and extremists according to the National Action Plan.

“Missing persons has been a contentious issue,” Bilawal said. “We will form a parliamentary committee over this issue and also invite other political parties to come sit with us.

Shehbaz, Zardari vow national revival

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the would-be president, Asif Ali Zardari, on Thursday promised to take challenges head on and to steer the country out of crises as the former endorsed the latter’s candidacy for the president’s position. The duo also pledged to work together.

Shehbaz has already become the prime minister for the second time while Zardari is just days away from entering the presidency–both returning to the key offices for the second time.

Amid rigging allegations and protest calls by rivals, the Shehbaz-Zardari duo on Thursday recounted the challenges being faced by the country and vowed that they would change Pakistan’s fate after taking the reins of the country together following the president’s election on March 9.

Even before winning the presidential elections, Zardari while assuring full support to PM Shehbaz tabled his plan of untapping China’s $5 trillion food-import market, saying fixing the agriculture sector was needed to get Pakistan a share from this market alone.

The pledges and endorsement came during a dinner reception hosted by PM Shehbaz for members of PML-N and its coalition partners at the Prime Minister House.

At the reception, Shehbaz, who is also the PML-N’s president, threw his weight behind Zardari together with the MQM-P, BAP, the IPP and the PML-Q.

Apart from the joint presidential candidate, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, MQM-P’s Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, PML-N’s Ishaq Dar, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Khawaja Asif, Khawaja Saad Rafique, PPPP’s Yousaf Raza Gilani, Raza Rabbani, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Khurshid Shah and IPP Aleem Khan and Awn Chaudhry as well as several other politicians attended the dinner.
The premier acknowledged that his government was facing immense challenges on various fronts, particularly the economy. Shehbaz said he has been taking briefings since he took oath and the numbers are alarming.

The PM revealed that the gas and electricity circular debt has soared to Rs5 trillion while the debt of the PIA has ballooned to Rs825 billion. The annual electricity theft amounts to Rs500 billion, PM lamented, underscoring the gravity of the economic situation.

He also highlighted that the government had refunded Rs65 billion to exporters, stressing the need to expand the tax base while reducing the burden on those already taxed.

He pointed out that Pakistan's tax-to-GDP ratio was just 9.8%, whereas it was higher in other countries. Shehbaz also highlighted the losses of state-owned entities, losses that amount to hundreds of billions of rupees, and the government's reliance on loans to cover these losses.

During the reception, PM Shehbaz said that Rs1.7 billion in taxes were stuck in courts due to litigation.
"We must unite to lead Pakistan out of the present economic difficulties. If we fail, history will not forgive us," he remarked. “Our goal is to improve the nation's condition, and we must present our proposals to friendly countries to attract investment,” he said.

While expressing his gratitude to all those supporting him in the presidential elections, Zardari admitted that the challenges facing Pakistan are difficult but their solution is not impossible.

Zardari, while pointing out that China imports $5 trillion food, said that Pakistan could capture it by focusing on the agriculture sector as it has the potential to attract trillions of dollars. Equating Shehbaz with Einstein, Zardari said that “Einstein was not afraid of difficult challenges and Shehbaz Sharif is also not afraid of them either”.
Zardari pledged his support to Shehbaz, affirming his commitment to assist him at every level.
“Fix agriculture, fix canals and build dams, let us become a ‘force multiplier’ for China, all this is definitely difficult but not impossible, we will make Pakistan prosperous together,” he added.
On the occasion, Bilawal expressed gratitude to all the coalition parties and Shehbaz Sharif, emphasizing that Asif Ali Zardari would make history as the first civilian president of Pakistan to take office for a second term on Saturday.

"Zardari was the strongest president in the country’s history. We passed the 18th Amendment and transferred the powers to the prime minister, abolished 58-2(b) and gave this power to the prime minister," he added, saying he would nevertheless be a president like the Queen of England.

The PPP chairman expressed optimism that Zardari, once elected president, would unify the nation and resolve societal divisions, as he had done in the past, ultimately strengthening democracy through collaboration with all political parties.

"We must face Pakistan's challenges together, but we are optimistic about our success," Bilawal asserted. "We will endeavour to secure victory for our joint candidate (Zardari) with the highest possible number of votes."

SIC nominates Omar Ayub for opposition leader in NA

In a surprising turn of events, the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), a party predominantly composed of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers, submitted the name of Omar Ayub Khan for the position of Opposition Leader in the National Assembly. The nomination was formally presented to the office of the National Assembly Speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, on Saturday.

Malik Amir Dogar presented documents of Ayub’s nomination to the NA speaker. Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Ali Muhammad Khan, Riaz Fatiana, and Dr Nisar Jat, among other opposition members were also present on the occasion.

The realisation that the formal process of appointing a leader of the opposition had not been completed struck the PTI-SIC coalition during the National Assembly session on Friday.

The revelation occurred when former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser urged the current NA Speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, to give the floor to the leader of the opposition, as was the tradition during Qaiser's tenure.

I've been reading a few articles and it does seem like the States and therefore the IMF are definitely supportive of the new political arrangement in Pakistan. They've themselves indicated they stand ready for the second review and have turned a blind eye to a few practices like exchange rate management and import curbs which they usually don't like.

As I predicted, it seems like Imran Khan's much debated letter was basically ignored.

The new federal cabinet comprising 19 members took the oath of office on Monday during a ceremony held at the President's House.

Newly-elected President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath.

Ishaq Dar, Azam Nazir Tarar, Attaullah Tarar, Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Ameer Mukam, Owais Leghari, Jam Kamal, Salik Hussain, Riyaz Pirzada, Rana Tanveer, Mohsin Naqvi, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Shiza Fatima, Attaullah Tarar, Qaiser Sheikh, Ahad Cheema, Musadiq Malik and Muhammad Aurangzeb were sworn in.

The military and political leadership including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and others attended the ceremony.

In the first phase, the portfolios of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Information, Ministry of Privatization and others will be assigned.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) is expected to get two ministries while the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) will be given one.

The first meeting of the newly sworn-in federal cabinet has been summoned today at 5pm by the premier.

Muhammad Aurangzeb has stepped down from his roles as the president and chief executive officer of Habib Bank Limited in the wake of his inclusion in the federal cabinet.

A letter from the bank said the Board of Directors has appointed Muhammad Nassir Salim to the positions, subject to the approval of the State Bank of Pakistan.

The statement concluded that ECP has finalised its preparations for the Senate elections.

Imran demands Article 6 for ‘mandate thieves’

A day after a protest was held outside the International Monetary Fund (IMF) headquarters in the US against the alleged rigging in the Feb 8 polls, PTI founder Imran Khan sought high treason proceedings against the officials who purportedly stole the people’s mandate in the general elections.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing of the Al-Qadir Trust case in which his spouse Bushra Bibi, aide Zulfi Bukhari, Farah Gogi, and property tycoon Malik Riaz are implicated, the former premier endorsed the demonstration outside the IMF office but distanced himself from the anti-army slogans raised by the protesters.

Imran Khan claimed that his party bagged over 30 million votes whereas the rest of the 17 political parties jointly secured the same number of votes. He added that the PTI took up the irregularities in polls with the IMF and that non-government organisations also pointed out flaws in the electoral process.

First, the PTI was denied its electoral symbol of bat under a conspiracy and then the former ruling party was deprived of its share of reserved seats, the ex-PM said, adding that the theft of the mandate was akin to treason, which attracted Article 6 of the Constitution.

He said the order of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) about reserved seats would be challenged in the Supreme Court, adding that the Election Commission of Pakistan could not allocate PTI’s seats to other political parties.

The PTI founder termed the upcoming Senate polls a ‘fixed match’. He alleged Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was rewarded for his performance because of his “vindictive approach” towards PTI during his stint as the caretaker chief minister. He said the Feb 8 election was a fixed match in which the “ECP and the caretaker government were hand in glove”.

According to Imran Khan, the ECP, a few political parties and the establishment “sabotaged the plan to bring in electronic voting”.

In response to a question about whether the ties with the government were healing, Mr Khan replied that reconciliation depended on the fair audit of elections. He, however, expressed apprehensions that he may be convicted in the Al-Qadir Trust case if the Islamabad High Court granted him bail in the cipher and Toshakhana cases.

In a comment on economy, Imran Khan said that the incumbent government was not sustainable because of the fragile economy. He rejected the criticism that the PTI left the country on the verge of default.

According to the former premier, the PML-N left a $20bn deficit in 2018 and there was no other option available but to approach the IMF. Mr Khan said the incumbent government had no mandate to carry out structural reforms. He advised the government to seek loans if it could repay the debt.

Speaking about the meeting between his party’s chief minister and Shehbaz Sharif, the ex-PM said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur should not have had a photo session with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He feared that the Centre would not give KP its due share in funds.

Hearing of the case

During the hearing of the Al-Qadir Trust case, Mr Khan’s counsel concluded the cross-examination of a prosecution witness, who was the chief financial officer of Al-Qadir University.

Accountability judge Nasir Javed Rana also recorded the statement of another prosecution witness.

During the hearing, Mr Khan, Bushra Bibi, her daughter and son-in-law were also present in the courtroom. The case was adjourned till March 20.

Appointments finalised for new governors in Punjab, K-P, Balochistan

In a significant development, the appointments of new governors for Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan have been confirmed following a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Under an agreement reached between the ruling PML-N and PPP, Sardar Salim Haider has been selected as the governor of Punjab, Faisal Karim Kundi for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Jaffar Khan Mandokhel for Balochistan.

According to reports from Express News, these appointments were finalised subsequent to a meeting between Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbazf, where discussions primarily revolved around the gubernatorial positions in Punjab, Balochistan, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz hosted a luncheon for Bilawal, fostering an environment conducive to deliberations on the current political landscape of Pakistan and the crucial task of appointing governors. Bilawal proposed various names for the governorships, which were ultimately endorsed by the prime minister.

Sardar Salim Haider, with prior experience as Special Assistant to the PM on Overseas Pakistanis and as Minister of State for Defence and Defence Production, was nominated for the role of Punjab's governor.

Faisal Karim Kundi, former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly under the federal government of PPP, currently assumes the position of Secretary of Information within the party and has been designated as the governor of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Jaffar Khan Mandokhel, known for his longstanding affiliation with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and his multiple tenures as an elected MPA, has been appointed as the governor of Balochistan.

Furthermore, it was agreed that the governorship of Sindh would remain with MQM-Pakistan, with the incumbent Kamran Khan Tessori retaining his position.

Don’t take us for granted, PPP warns PML-N

Rifts between the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) deepened on Wednesday as main ally of PML-N government had only a token participation in the National Assembly’s budget session after the ruling party didn’t bother to address PPPP’s reservations about budget.

The disgruntled lawmakers of the PPPP only had a token participation in the budget session; that too after the Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar rushed to PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s chamber, requesting that the party should attend the budget session.

However, the PPP chairman only sent three of his MNAs, Naveed Qamar, Khursheed Shah and Ijaz Jakhrani, to represent PPPP in the session as the party feels that PML-N has not only deviated from its post-election agreement but it has started taking PPPP for granted. The PPP chairman and the rest of the party lawmakers were conspicuous by their absence when the session started.

“The PML-N has violated the agreement that it reached with PPPP before forming the government in the Center as it has not taken any input from its key ally in the PSDP budget,” PPPP Secretary Information Shazia Marri shared with The Express Tribune, “the government is taking us for granted.”

The party spokesperson said that both the parties had agreed that they would consult on Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) programme and take PPPP’s recommendations in this regard but that hasn’t happened. Marri said that the government side only briefed a few party lawmakers a few days ago but nothing has happened after that, adding that the token participation in today’s session makes it clear PM Shehbaz and the government hasn’t given any assurances to PPPP.

Had Dar not come to request Bilawal and assure that the government will look into the issue, Marri said, PPPP wouldn’t even have participated in the session at all. To a question what will be PPPP’s next move, Marri said that it was up to the government how it moves on from here on as the ball was in the government’s court.

Responding to the question if PPPP would help the government pass the budget, Marri said that the government still has time to address PPPP’s concerns. “We are not blackmailers; we act responsibly,” she said, “but the government shouldn’t take us for granted.” She said that PPPP wants to subsidise farmers, strategise taxation and avoid regressive taxation.

PPPP and PML-N hit a stumbling block on Tuesday when they failed to reconcile their differences over the proposed 18 per cent standard sales tax on agriculture inputs and machinery. The tax, which the International Monetary Fund (IMF) insists on as part of its campaign to end tax exemptions in Pakistan, remains a bone of contention.

In addition, the PPP leadership is unhappy over load-shedding, importing wheat at the wrong time and the inquiry results as well as not giving relief to the agriculture sector in the budget. Feeling left out in the cold by the PML-N, the PPP leadership minced no words in expressing their displeasure as they lambasted the PML-N for sidelining a key coalition partner.

When asked about the PPPP’s thin presence in the NA, Senator Sherry Rehman said that the PPP had agreed to support govt formation in the larger national interest after intense negotiations, saying that as part of both the parties’ agreement, “the PSDP of all four provinces was to be pre-agreed with the government.”

Had we been taken on board, the PPPP stalwart said, we would have been able to positively contribute to the government’s budget making process. “It is for this reason that PPPP had token representation in protest during today’s budget speech session in the National Assembly,” Rehman said.

“It is our party’s position that the government must take the PPP into full confidence on important issues such as the budget,” she said, adding the PPPP is also engaged with the PMLN to ensure that the agreement is implemented and any future misunderstandings can be avoided. Both parties’ teams are meeting again tomorrow, she said, to ensure the implementation of the remainder of the agreement.

For past few days, the coalition partners have not been on the same page after PPPP accused PML-N of turning a deaf ear to its concerns about budget and taxation, saying the PM and his government should approach and address the issues if they needed continued support from the key ally.

Following a split mandate in the February 8 general elections, it was the PPPP which had helped the PML-N to form the government in the center after they both had reached an agreement and divided key constitutional offices, including PM, president, governors, chairman and deputy chairman of Senate and speaker and deputy speaker of the National Assembly, between them.

Bilawal to meet Shehbaz today to discuss budget concerns

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to meet with Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari after tensions within the ruling coalition have heightened over the federal budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, according to sources.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been at odds with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) over money bills both at the federal level and in Punjab.

Bilawal is preparing to express his party’s concerns directly to the prime minister in a meeting expected to take place today.

The PPP believes that the PML-N is taking them for granted, particularly by excluding their input in the PSDP budget, PPP lawmaker Shazia Marri told The Express Tribune.

Sources reveal that Shehbaz has invited Bilawal to the Prime Minister’s House, and the meeting is scheduled for 4 PM.

It is likely that Bilawal will use the opportunity to voice his concerns regarding the budget.

Sources reveal that Bilawal will maintain his absence from the National Assembly’s budget session, adding that the PPP chairman will take the next step based on the results of the meeting with the premier.

If the meeting is successful, they added, there will be full participation in the session; otherwise, the parliamentary party will determine the course of action.

In this regard, insiders also said, PPP’s participation in today's budget session will also be symbolic.

PPP has nominated four members for token participation in the National Assembly session. Among those participating in the session will be Qadir Patel, Shabbir Ali Bijarani, Colonel Asad Niazi, and Agha Rafiullah.

It is pertinent to note that the PPP’s absence from the National Assembly’s budget session on June 12 was a clear sign of discontent.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar had to make a beeline for Bilawal’s chamber to persuade the PPP to participate in the proceedings. However, Bilawal only sent three of his MNAs—Naveed Qamar, Khursheed Shah, and Ijaz Jakhrani—to represent the party.

The PPP feels that the PML-N has not only strayed from their post-election agreement but is also starting to take the PPP for granted.

Imran claims negotiations may result in toppling of PML-N govt

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan stated on Friday that any negotiations with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) could result in the downfall of their government.

During an informal media chat at the hearing of the £190 million reference case, the incarcerated former PM expressed his desire to negotiate for Pakistan's benefit, not for personal or governmental interests.

"I want to negotiate for Pakistan, not for myself or the government," he said.

Imran reiterated his willingness to step back if it benefits the country, saying, "Convince me it benefits the country, and I will step back."

He criticised the current government for not reducing expenses and failing to create an investment-friendly environment. "The country is in crisis," the ex-PM said.

"The government has not reduced its expenses, which is troubling. The current government has failed to create an environment for investment."

Imran argued that Pakistan needs a mandate-driven government for necessary reforms, pointing out that the current budget highlights the limitations of a non-mandated government. He condemned heavy taxation on professionals and the public, predicting severe impacts from the upcoming electricity bills.

Imran lamented the broken promises on load-shedding in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), where power cuts are extensive.

He criticised the ongoing issue of electricity theft in various regions, questioning where the public should turn for solutions. "Electricity theft is an old issue. It happens in Hyderabad, Sindh, and Quetta as well," he said.

Imran also complained about being barred from meeting Ali Amin Gandapur, despite not refusing a meeting himself. He noted the lack of unity within political parties and criticised Maryam Nawaz for extravagant spending on self-promotion.

Imran announced plans to file cases against major and colonel officials in Adiala Jail, accusing Ahsan Iqbal of contempt for suggesting he be jailed for five years.

He questioned the rule of law, criticising recent judicial and administrative actions.

He also criticised amendments to NAB laws, alleging they were made to conceal corruption. "How can someone who conducted fraudulent elections deliver justice?" Imran asked.

He warned that further borrowing would be needed to pay off the national debt and urged the judiciary to support the weak rather than the powerful.

Government concedes to all PPP demands in key meeting

The government on Sunday agreed to all demands put forward by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Express News reported.

A meeting was held in Islamabad between the negotiating committees of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the PPP, during which the PPP presented its objections to the government.

After thorough discussions, the government accepted all of the PPP's demands. Sources indicated that the PPP will also be given preference in development funds and administrative positions in Punjab.

Following the meeting, senior PPP leader and member of the negotiating committee, Nadeem Afzal Chan, spoke to media representatives.

He stated that there were issues of accommodation in Punjab and the matter of local body elections. He added that the PPP wants to ensure no one is targeted for retribution and that good governance is provided in Punjab.

Significant progress has been made with the government, and discussions are now focusing on the implementation of the written agreement, he concluded.

Previously, a meeting convened at the PM House on June 21 where PPP leaders voiced their grievances, alleging they were being “victimised” in Punjab, much like the ruling alliance’s rivals in the PTI-turned-Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

They lamented that their legislators and party workers were facing the wrath of the administration without any respite.

The PPP stressed the importance of the administration functioning “above board” and demanded that local elections proceed without undue delay.

In addition, the PPP has asked the PML-N governments at the Centre and Punjab that previous development schemes should continue to be funded in the current budget instead of abandoning them.

In reaction, members of National Assembly continued the budget debate on the second consecutive day on Friday, amid an absence of federal ministers and boycott from the PPP, a major government ally.

Prior to that a statement was issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on June 20, a one-on-one meeting between PM Shehbaz and Bilawal was held.

Bilawal was accompanied by Yousuf Raza Gilani, Khurshid Shah, Senator Sherry Rehman, Naveed Qamar, and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf at the Prime Minister's House.

'London Plan' in complete shambles: Barrister Saif

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Information Advisor, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, declared on Monday that the so-called "London Plan" is in shambles, urging the public to monitor those attempting to flee closely.

The PTI leader criticised the coalition government set-up, stating that the court ministers are attempting to sustain their regime through successive press conferences.

"PM Shehbaz and Maryam Nawaz are futilely trying to hold onto their fake empire by its tail. All they have left is the tail; the rest of the empire has slipped from their hands," said Barrister Saif.

He reiterated that the "London Plan" has been thoroughly dismantled, urging the public to keep a special watch on those fleeing to London. "This time, excuses about falling platelets won't work," he asserted.

"The foundations of the fake empire have been shaken only by the decision regarding reserved seats. The election tribunal's decisions are still pending," Saif added.

Earlier, on June 26, PTI Information Secretary Raoof Hassan alleged that a concerted effort is underway to keep PTI founder Imran Khan in jail, suggesting it is part of a broader "London Plan."

Hassan highlighted statements made by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, who allegedly said that all means would be employed to keep Imran Khan incarcerated.

Barrister Saif further mentioned that the tribunal's fair decisions will expose the whole truth about Form 47. "The foundations of the government built on Form 47 are so weak that they couldn't even support the fake empire for a few months," he concluded.

Imran Khan to stay in jail, govt to last 18 months: Fitch report

Fitch, the credit rating agency, predicts in its report on Pakistan that Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), will continue to be in detention in the near future.

Additionally, Fitch forecasts that Pakistan's current government led by PML-N will maintain stability for the next 18 months.

Fitch also anticipates a potential decrease in Pakistan's inflation rate by the end of the current fiscal year, with expectations that the State Bank of Pakistan will lower interest rates to 14% by fiscal year-end. The government of Pakistan has set ambitious economic targets in its budget, aiming to reduce the fiscal deficit from 7.4% to 6.7%.

The Fitch report highlights that Pakistan's challenging economic decisions are paving the way for an IMF program, with external payment pressures posing economic risks while floods and droughts threaten Pakistan's agriculture.

Regarding Pakistan's February 8 elections, Fitch notes significant success for independent candidates, supported by the incarcerated PTI founder. Potential protests in Pakistan's cities could impact economic activities.

Looking ahead, Fitch predicts that Imran Khan will remain under detention in the near term, and Pakistan's current Muslim League government will sustain stability for 18 months. Fitch further suggests that the current government will collaborate with the IMF to implement all economic reforms, with a transition to a technocratic government expected once the current administration concludes.

Govt minister offers PTI to sit and sort out issues

“We offer them to talk, and they say, they will stage sit-in,” Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik said in a news conference in Islamabad.

“Those involved in the politics of chaos are not well-wisher of the country, they are creating obstacles in development of the country,” the minister said.

“The PTI’s founder is now calling to become neutral,” he said.

The Minister said alleviating poverty, reducing inflation and providing job opportunities to the youth are the foremost priorities of the government.

He said the inflation is gradually coming down. He said development projects are being executed especially in the backward areas with the aim to provide job opportunities.

Responding to a question, Musadik Malik said that FBR will be digitized, and the state-owned enterprises will be privatized.

PTI announces expanding opposition alliance to run 'powerful anti-govt movement'

After meeting incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in Adiala Jail, the party's leader Asad Qaiser announced on Thursday that the opposition alliance — Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Ayin-e-Pakistan (TTAP) — would be expanded by inclusion of more parties.

"PTI decides to expand the opposition alliance in the meeting with Imran Khan," said former National Assembly while addressing the media alongside the party's Secretary-General Omar Ayub Khan and others oustide Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail today.

He announced that the former ruling party would gather all opposition parties to run a powerful anti-government movement.

Qaiser said that the party's forthcoming power show in Swabi was aimed at raising a "strong voice" for the release of PTI founder and other detained leaders.

"This country will only be governed in accordance with the law and the Constitution," he emphasised.

During his address, Qaiser also censured the incumbent government over skyrocketing power bills, saying the bloated electricity bills were "unacceptable" for the inflation-hit masses.

The PTI leader also said that they support Jamaat-e-Islami's (JI) sit-in — underway on Rawalpindi's Murree Road since July 26 — against the massive hike in power bills.

Ayub, while addressing the same press conference, appealed to the masses to attend the public gathering in Swabi on August 5 in large numbers from across the country to show solidarity with the ex-premier and the "most popular party".

In his initial remarks, the politico said that during the meeting, the former prime minister strongly condemned the killing of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh and expressed outrage over the West for doing nothing to stop Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians.

Imran also urged the international community to take effective steps to ensure peace in Palestine and stop Israeli brutalities in Gaza, said Omar.

Responding to criticism against the PTI founder for demanding negotiations, the politico said that they did not hold any discussion regarding the dialogue, however, he added that Imran made it clear that the military belongs to the nation and vice versa.

He further said that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) were trying to drive a wedge between the military and the nation.

Regarding cases against the jailed ex-prime minister, the opposition leader said that they were fighting a legal battle for Imran’s release. He blamed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for stopping the release of former first lady Bushra Bibi despite having no connections with the Toshakhana case.

The PTI secretary general demanded Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa and Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamer Farooq to recuse themselves from hearing the PTI founder’s cases.

The 71-year-old PTI founding chairman has been in prison for almost a year after he was booked in a plethora of cases, including the Toshakhana, cipher, and the un-Islamic marriage. His wife, Bushra, has also been behind bars for months.

However, a court suspended his sentence in the Toshakhana case, while other courts overturned his convictions in the cipher and iddat cases, respectively.

While there were hopes for Imran and Bushra's release in July, they were dashed when NAB arrested them on fresh charges related to the sale of state gifts.

The chances of Imran's release from jail further dimmed after he was arrested in new cases linked to the May 9, 2023, riots, following his acquittal in the iddat case.

Referring to the unending cycle of Imran’s release and detention, Ayub also stressed that the "justice system should serve justice to the PTI founder".

He further alleged that ex-premier Nawaz Sharif ended his exile after “getting an NRO” and returned to the country after Justice Isa became the CJP. The politico claimed that the PML-N president did not dare to return when Umar Ata Bandial was holding the position of chief justice.

To a question regarding exorbitant electricity bills, the former power minister directly blamed the former governments of the PML-N and the PPP for approving expensive power plants and signing contracts with the independent power producers (IPPs) which resulted in bloated power bills.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has urged the federal government to dissolve the National Assembly and hold new elections amidst growing political tensions

In an interview with a private television channel, Bukhari stated, “If the government perceives a threat, it should dissolve the assembly and initiate new elections.”

He suggested that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should send an advisory to President Asif Ali Zardari to dissolve the assembly and pave the way for elections.

Bukhari expressed concerns about the government's reluctance to communicate its issues with the PPP. “PPP is ready to strengthen the government in Parliament, but it should deliver something meaningful. President Zardari has repeatedly stated his willingness to mediate discussions and play a constructive role, but there must be a willingness to engage in dialogue,” Bukhari said.

He cautioned that any derailment of the political system could harm the country.

The PPP leader also reflected on the party's acceptance of the election results, despite having reservations. “We accepted the election results with reservations. If we hadn't supported the PML-N, would the parliament and the Chief Executive's office be functioning today?” he questioned, underscoring the PPP's role in stabilizing the government.

Govt left with only two months in power, predicts Imran Khan

Despite waiting for talks with stakeholders in power, jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has predicted that the incumbent government led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is only left with two months in the government.

"The government is plunging into quagmire, however, they [rulers] are fool and unable to understand," he said this in an informal conversation with journalists in makeshift courtroom setup inside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on Thursday.

"I am predicting this from prison that this government has only two months," the PTI founder said adding that he has enough time but the incumbent rulers are running out of time.

Referring to his Wednesday statement on conditional apology over the May 9 riots, the former premier stated that a wrong perception was created that he had sought an unconditional apology.

The PTI founder reiterated that he would apologise if the PTI activists were found involved in the violent protests that broke out in the country last year following his arrest from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises in a corruption case.

The cricketer-turned-politician said that his party "only wants justice in the May 9 [events]". Elaborating on his offer to initiate dialogue, Khan said that he made the offer to hold talks only for the sake of the country.

"I will not strike any deal no matter how many cases they register against us," he said adding that a deal is sought by those who had committed any wrongdoing.

He also clarified that he has not received any offer for negotiations so far.

The politico claimed that he would present a witness in the Al-Qadir Trust case — also known as the £190m National Crime Agency (NCA) scandal which reportedly caused a loss of £190 million pounds to the national exchequer.

However, he did not disclose the name of the witness, fearing that the witness would be abducted if he disclosed his identity.

He further said that his party would not accept election if held under the supervision of the incumbent government.

MQM-P threatens to quit coalition govt

Talking to media, senior MQM-P leader and MNA Farooq Sattar has warned ruling PML-N of severe consequences if Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori is removed from his post.

“MQM-P will reconsider its alliance with the government if it fails to keep its promise of retaining Tessori as the Sindh governor,” warned Sattar, adding that during the formation of the government, it was agreed upon that Tessori would continue as the Sindh governor.

The MQM leader also expressed disappointment over the government’s decision to ‘replace’ Tessori, terming it a breach of trust.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar had denied rumors of Tessori’s removal, saying that there was no truth to the reports.

The development comes amid speculation about Tessori’s removal, which has been circulating for some time. The MQM has expressed its displeasure over the government’s handling of the matter, warning of severe consequences if Tessori is replaced.

Sources close to the development revealed that the discussions between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and PML-N have been ongoing regarding the potential change of Sindh governor.

Govt not delivering, it won’t stay much time: Muhammad Ali Durrani

Former information minister Muhammad Ali Durrani has said that the government is not delivering, it will not stay for long time.

“I am not seeing any future of the incumbent setup, it is moving towards its end,” in an interview he told ARY News.

“The rulers are failing to deliver, there is no justification for their stay for many days,” Durrani observed.

He said, “Shehbaz Sharif is not the prime minister, he has only fastened the prime ministerial badge.”

“All political parties have to set an agenda of transparent elections prior to the polls,” Durrani said.

“Political leaders have told me, it is not an option to go with the government,” he said.

Durrani said that the government’s fight with the court will create anarchy. “If they affect courts with any amendment, it will bring loss to the country”.

“People are infuriated, give respect to their opinion,” Muhammad Ali Durrani said.

“If the institutions sitting with the government, it doesn’t mean they consider them angels,” he added.

PPP, PML-N to meet for discussions on power-sharing on Sunday

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari have agreed to convene a meeting on Sunday to discuss power-sharing arrangements.

Sources reveal that the developments were confirmed after a meeting between the two leaders.

Meanwhile, a joint coordination committee meeting between Pakistan Muslim League (N) and Pakistan Peoples Party has been postponed until August 25.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at Governor House, where key figures from both parties, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Maryam Aurangzeb, and Malik Ahmed Khan from PML-N, and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Nadeem Afzal Chan, Hasan Murtaza, and Ali Haider Gillani from PPP, will be present.

The meeting aims to review the implementation of power-sharing agreements, address PPP's concerns, and establish a timeline for other aspects of the agreement.

Senate Chairman calls for dialogue with all political parties, including PTI

Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani on Sunday called for dialogue among all political parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), emphasising the need for national unity during challenging times.

Speaking to the media, the former prime minister highlighted the critical role of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging him to lead the talks and make decisive moves.

"Shehbaz Sharif is the captain of the team and must take the necessary decisions. If he makes any decision, we will support him on national issues," Gillani stated.

He underscored the importance of unity among political parties to address national security concerns, stressing that positions and offices come and go, but the nation must remain strong and united.

Gillani also addressed the youth, advising them not to be misguided and reminding them that their honour is tied to Pakistan's existence.

He further noted that Pakistan’s status as a nuclear power is secure, with its constitution, courts, and institutions firmly in place.

Donald Lu praises ‘deeper’ ties with Shahbaz Sharif’s government

The United States is enjoying a stronger relationship with Pakistan under Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s government, according to Donald Lu, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia.

In an interview with a local private media channel, Lu expressed optimism over Pakistan’s economic recovery and ongoing reforms.

“We are greatly encouraged by the economic recovery Pakistan is undergoing,” Lu remarked during the interview, following his recent meeting with Pakistan’s Finance Minister, Aurangzeb, at the World Bank headquarters.

They discussed Pakistan’s economic reforms, which Lu described as essential for its future.

“These reforms are not easy, but they are crucial for Pakistan’s long-term stability,” he said, adding that their successful implementation would benefit all segments of society, including the youth.

On security cooperation, Lu reaffirmed the United States’ support for Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts. “We are working alongside Pakistan’s military and government in their fight against terrorism,” he noted.

He also highlighted the deep connection between the US and the people of Pakistan, stating that the United States is committed to the country’s success. “The US wants Pakistan to thrive and succeed,” Lu emphasised.

Lu, was previously accused by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding leader Imran Khan of being involved in the parliamentary vote of no-confidence that ousted the former prime minister.

No surprise there. Shariffs, zardaris tick all the boxes as far as US establishment is concerned. This quote alone "Beggars can't be Choosers" is music to their ears.

As we said this was coup planned in Washington and implemented in Pindi. And look at the hypocrisy of the Americans. This is the recent Venezuelan election result they rejected. Can anyone find the difference between the PK elections and Venezuelan election and why have the munafiqs backed one and not the other.

PMLN violating pact with PPP: Bilawal

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal-Bhutto Zardari expressed his dissatisfaction with the federal government’s policies and governance style on Thursday, alleging that Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) was violating its agreement with his party.

During his visit to the PPP media cell here, he claimed that neither respect was being given to his party nor genuine politics were being observed at the federal level. He claimed that Sindh province was being discriminated against again and again, which was a matter of concern for his party.

Officials said Bilawal toured various departments, including the monitoring room and news section of the media cell. Surendar Valasai, in-charge of the cell, provided a detailed briefing to the party chairman.

Bilawal held an informal discussion with journalists, addressing questions about President Asif Ali Zardari’s health, killing of Chinese citizens, US elections, internet issue, PPP’s grievances with the federal government, construction of new canals on the Indus River, and the need for equal representation in constitutional benches.

When asked about President Zardari’s health, he replied that fortunately his health was improving, although he suffered four fractures in his leg and needed rest for a few weeks.

Commenting on the terrorist attacks on Chinese citizens, the PPP chairman said he believed in the principle of “killing one is killing all humanity”. He emphasised that Chinese citizens, who fell victim to terrorism, had come to Pakistan to create employment opportunities and benefit the nation.

He urged the government to work globally with its international partners to expose the networks and called for an internal ‘National Action Plan 2.0’ to address this issue.

Regarding the US elections, the PPP chairman explained that just as Pakistan did not interfere in US domestic politics, the US also refrains from intervening in Pakistan’s internal matters. He noted that while personal relationships could be beneficial in diplomacy, they did not play a decisive role in state-to-state relationships.

He shared that he had an acquaintance with the US President-elect’s son-in-law and daughter, recalling that when Shaheed Benazir Bhutto visited the US during her first term as prime minister, President Trump hosted a reception in her and President Zardari’s honour.

Commenting on Pak-US relations, he said the ties between the two countries were currently not as good as they could be. He recalled that even when he was Pakistan’s foreign minister, relations with the US were strained, but now they were far worse. He asserted that it was in the interest of the Pakistani people to improve relations with the US.

When asked about the slow internet speed in the country, Bilawal said that decision on internet policy was being made by people who did not even use it. He said there was no consultation with the PPP on the issue, nor was any input sought.

In response to questions about PPP’s grievances with the federal government, Bilawal said it’s not a question of mere discontent; true politics was based on respect. He said the government coalition must adhere to their agreements.

He stressed that the PPP was supporting the federal government as a moral ally and that they expected the agreed terms to be upheld. On the issue of new canal construction from the Indus River, he said that step was another example of the PMLN’s breach of agreement with the PPP.

Bilawal criticised the federal government for failing to implement the promised equality during constitutional amendments. He said he withdrew from the judicial commission in protest, stating that if he had stayed, he would have addressed the disparities in the constitutional bench. He stressed that if there were judges from rural Sindh on the Supreme Court, he would have advocated for equality, as the highest judicial institution required fair representation.

Bilawal asserted that a country could not operate under two separate systems, as different treatment of Sindh again and again was visible to all. He urged that the chief justice, as the head of the constitutional bench, should remain impartial to ensure justice and unity.

Coalition partners meet today to bridge rift

In order to sort out differences between the ruling partners, PML-N and PPP teams will meet today to start negotiations on contentious issues that have led to a rift between the two sides.

“Although the two sides have already made virtual contact on the matter, they are meeting in person for the first time today (Monday),” said a source close to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Sunday. The venue of the meeting has not been disclosed by the two sides.

Besides complaints about not being a part of the decision-making process, the PPP has some reservations about the treatment meted out to the party by the Punjab government, with insiders claiming the PML-N government was not allowing it to freely hold party events in the province.

“First of all, the provincial government of Punjab does not give permission to the PPP to hold its political events and if it does so, it later raises objection to these events,” the source said while elaborating on the differences.

The meeting between the two political parties comes days after PML-N stalwart and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar held a meeting with the PPP chief on the order of the prime minister aimed at addressing the PPP’s concerns.

In the meeting, it was decided that both sides would regularly meet to resolve their differences.

Ahead of today’s meeting, the PPP chairperson held a virtual meeting with members of his team and gave them instructions on how they should plead their case in the meeting. It said Mr Bhutto-Zardari also discussed some national issues with the team. During the meeting, the PPP chief recalled his concerns and reservations regarding the federal government’s behaviour with the PPP.

A few days ago, PPP leader in Punjab Syed Hasan Murtaza asked the PML-N to consult his party on all major decisions in the province.

“PPP is only sharing the burden with the PML-N in Punjab. If decisions are made unilaterally, the burden will also have to be borne alone. We demand that the PPP should be taken into confidence in Punjab’s governance matters,” Mr Murtaza said in a presser after the party’s executive meeting in Lahore on Thursday.

Days after the PPP chief played a key role in the passage of the much-hyped 26th constitutional amendment last month that changed the process of the appointment of the chief justice, he expressed annoyance with the government for lack of coordination.

He lamented that the government had backed out on its promises by not ensuring equal representation of the ruling PML-N and the PPP in the judicial commission. The PML-N formed its government with the support of the PPP, which has the third-largest number of votes in the National Assembly.

Although the PPP is not part of the government, it has obtained many constitutional offices, including the president of Pakistan, the Senate chairman, and Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governors.
