Happy Birthday to a ground that's hosted some classics over the years!

Even the robot in the background is appluading. :14:

Was above Mumbai for years hosted the 1987 WC final but probably most unsporting crowd in India.

Agree, has coincided with Kolkata's decline as a city.

Since it is from the time Ind/Pak was one we can also be proud?:)

Were they originally going to celebrate the 150th with a test against the Windies?

Yep, the BCCI has the West Indies pegged for all of these anniversaries lol.

Amazing cricket ground but lost its charm recently. That old Gardens prior to reinnovation was capable of more than 120000 people was crazy. Easily the most passionate and vocal crowd ever.

Few (amongst many) unsporting incident in this stadium:

1)1996 WC - Crowd went nuts in tha semi final game vs SL. When India started losing they started throwing bottles, plastic bags and caused match refree to forefiet the match and credit it to Lankan's.

2)1999 vs Pak - After Sohaib accidently run out SRT, crowd went nuts. Sachin had to come to the stadium to pacify the people. In the last day of that test match, crowd was forced out by police with lathi charge and Pak won that game in virtually empty eden gardens.

3)2005 vs SA - Crowd took its vengeance on Rahul Dravid and Greg Chappel after Ganguly was ousted from the team. Dravid's wicket (bowled) was celebrated with huge cheer from the crowd. SA won that game by 10 wickets and entire crowed booed Indian team out of the stadium cheering SA.

All in all was a fantastic and historic cricket venue. After the reinnovation in present days it is only a shadow of what it was in the past.

The most passionate people in the country are Bengalis.. They love their cricket and they love their heroes :ganguly

Lost its charm. Was BY FAR the craziest cricket ground at its peak.By far!

Pakistan have quite a good record there, despite it been known as a hostile crowd for the opposition.

Thank god they removed those stinking wooden benches from a bygone era and have put a shed over the stands.

Was one of the worst stadiums with minimal facilities unless you had a clubhouse ticket. By the looks of it now things are a lot better with bucketed seats and more leg space. I am sure other facilities have improved as well.

It was the one Indian ground I wanted to visit as a 100k+ would have been mad but it sounds as though the renovations have reduced the capacity to a "measly" 60-70k and the ground may also have lost some of its charm? But, is there a flip side - is the ground now more modern and facilities better for the spectators?

Eden Gardens To Be Used As Quarantine Facility For Kolkata Police
Kolkata police has been allowed to use under galleries of Eden Gardens as a quarantine facility.

Kolkata: The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on Friday allowed Kolkata police to use under galleries of Eden Gardens cricket stadium as a quarantine facility for its personnel.

There was an emergent meeting held at the Kolkata Police Headquarters with senior CAB officials and it was followed by a joint inspection at the Eden Gardens.

CAB president Avishek Dalmiya and Honorary Secretary Snehasish Ganguly were present during the inspection.

It has been decided that under galleries of E, F, G and H blocks would be used to set up such facilities. In case, more space is required, then J block might also be used. Such areas would be thoroughly segregated as a safety measure, according to a statement.

Since the administrative functioning majorly happens at Club House, adjacent blocks (B, C, D, K and L) would not be used for it, allowing the CAB to use them for conducting its activities and / or for its administrative work, the statement said.

"It is our duty to help and support the administration in this hour of crisis. The quarantine facility would be used for police personnel who are covid warriors. The under galleries which would be used at E, F, G, H and J Blocks would be properly segregated and secured from the balance areas. The arrangement agreed between Kolkata Police and CAB would ensure that areas used for cricket and administrative Activities remain unaffected," Mr Dalmiya said.

The groundsmen and other staff would be shifted to the dormitories and other safer spaces in B, C, K and L blocks inside the stadium.

The Cricket Association of Bengal will write to the BCCI to award it a match during England's Test tour next year as a compensation for the cancelled South Africa ODI, its president Avishek Dalmiya said on Sunday.

The second and third ODIs against South Africa in Lucknow and Kolkata on March 15 and 18 respectively were cancelled as the COVID-19 pandemic brought to halt all the sporting events across the world.

"We will request BCCI to plan the Test series (against England) in such a way that the two associations get compensated for the two abandoned matches," Dalmiya told PTI. "We would be looking forward to the BCCI to negotiate with the England Cricket Board because they are the ones to tour India in early 2021, that's the next home series."

The next home series is from January to March 2021 when England is scheduled to come for a full tour.

England's limited-overs tour of India comprising three ODIs and as many T20Is was originally scheduled from September-October this year but has now been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dalmiya further said the CAB would write separately to request for reimbursement of the losses incurred due to the abandonment of the South Africa ODI match.

"We will send a request sympathetically to reimburse the expenses incurred for printing of match tickets, sale of tickets, getting the venue ready. The calculations are being worked out," he said.

He also backed BCCI president Sourav Ganguly as the next chairman of International Cricket Council.

"It's important that someone from India becomes the chairman. The global cricket is going through a difficult phase due to the pandemic. A strong ICC is the need of the hour in order to protect the game."

Dalmiya said BCCI would play a key role with two World Cups (T20 in 2021 and ODI in 2023) lined up in the country in next two years.

"I think that a strong leadership is the need of the hour. Along with the telecast right holders, the sponsors are one of the important stakeholders. So it's very important that India plays a crucial role as far as the ICC is concerned.

"Then there are tax issues, which needs to be resolved between the ICC and the BCCI. I don't know how or what the thoughts of the BCCI is. I'm sure that they would also be considering every aspect of it," he added.
