Afghanistan and England will embark upon their T20 World Cup campaign as they lock horns in their opening match, which will also be the second match of the Super 12 in Perth on Saturday.

Overview

England are coming into this tournament on the back of some mixed form. They played 21 T20Is this year ahead of this mega event and won only 10 of those while losing as many games. It won't be completely fair to doubt their quality as a team, though, as they have chopped, changed and experimented to find their desired balance ahead of this mega event.

Their recent performance, however, paints a better picture of their quality and standard of cricket. England have won four of their last five T20Is, with one match yielding no result, against teams like Australia and Pakistan.

They have done that while fielding a full-strength side, sans a few injury concerns, and that's how they are going to play in the World Cup as well. Jos Buttler and his men have plenty of firepower in their batting line-up but they have shown the affinity to collapse against quality spin bowling on a lot of occasions. That's something they need to be careful of while going into this encounter against Mohammad Nabi's men.

The absence of Reece Topley, the top wicket-taker for them in T20Is this year, will dent England's plans and it will be interesting to see which way they go to complete their bowling attack in his absence.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, will look to make a statement this time. They secured an automatic Super 12 spot this time on the back of their seventh-place finish in the last edition and now they will be eager to go one step further to make it to the semi-finals.

But the job is going to be extremely difficult as they are placed in a group consisting of teams like Australia, New Zealand and England. They are yet to beat any of these three sides and might need to exceed their best to pull off a win at least against one of these three teams.

As far as their form ahead of the tournament goes, they won 3-0 against Zimbabwe earlier this year but lost the very next series to Ireland 3-2. They did raise hopes when they finished at the top of their group in the Asia Cup but their form fizzled off later in the tournament.

Afghanistan's performance in the warm-up matches has been inspiring, though. Mohammad Nabi and his men defeated Bangladesh by 62 runs and posted a competitive total of 154/6 against Pakistan before the game got called off. So, the entire group must be in pretty high spirits ahead of their opening match against England.

Predicted Playing XIs

England: Jos Buttler (c & wk), Alex Hales, Ben Stokes, Liam Livingstone, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Hazratullah Zazai, Najibullah Zadran, Ibrahim Zadran Usman Ghani, Mohammad Nabi (c), Fareed Ahmad Malik, Rashid Khan, Naveen-ul-Haq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi

Key Players

Harry Brook: The 23-year-old has adapted to the No.5 role in England's batting line-up like fish to water. 275 of his 316 T20I career runs have come while batting at five, at a superb average of 45.83 and an outstanding strike rate of 152.77. That includes brilliant knocks of 81*, 42* and 31 in the T20I series in Pakistan last month.

Mohammed Nabi: The experienced all-rounder is going to be the most crucial player for Afghanistan in this contest. He has been seen in excellent form in the warm-up games. Nabi smashed an unbeaten 41 from 17 deliveries against Bangladesh and then went on to register bowling figures of 1/11 in three overs. He played an even better knock against Pakistan as he made his way to an unbeaten 51 from just 37 deliveries to propel his side to a competitive total.

Farooqi will be key if afg have any chances 2 quick wickets in PP can restrict england to 160.

Imagine having T20WC in mid90s and eng lineup

Stewart Knight Nasser Hick Thorpe Fairbrother Hollioake Wells Ealham Austin Gough Ccaddick

Match: England won the toss and elected to bowl

Mohammad Nabi: The plan was to bat first and put some score on the board and then put pressure with the ball. Excited as a captain and hopefully we will do well as a team. For the last few weeks we had a good look at the conditions and practice games as well.

Jos Buttler: We gonna have a bowl. It's been a long build-up there's been some good games we are as ready as we can be. Everyone is raring to go. Really excited and great honour to captain your country in a World Cup. We have a lot of talent in the squad. We have left out Willey, Jordan, Mills and Salt.

Yup Farooqi and Fareed upfront. Im wondering whether Mohammad Saleem will play or not.

The two spinners or maybe three are also gonna have an impact here

Azmatullah hasnt done anything special as of yet, would had preferred if they went a batsman extra. There batting is a bit weak. Bowling is great

Zero chance in these conditions for Afghanistan. But you never know England lost to srilanka in WC19

Should really avoid hosting games like this in big stadiums. It is a terrible impression on the sport when you have a completely empty stadium during your flagship event.

lovely anthem of the Afghans

Now time for God save the King

So England were not messing around when Stokes bowled the first over against Pakistan

Well batted 66-1

Empty stadium - strange for a WC game

Afhganistan facing trouble against the pace

Terrific first ball from Wood.

England’s best bowler.

What the hell did wood just bowl... that was fastttttttt

154kph, but that was wayy more fastt

afghanistan have to take on the other bowlers till the field is up

hazratullah is a big hack, terrible player.

Zazai has become very conservative recently

He doesn’t look like he wants to hit anything

Mark wood is gonna be the fastest bowler of the tournament only haris rauf comes close to him.

cause hes a hacks, hacks cant strike against good bowling. No footwork or anything, trying to swing the bat to leg but cant adjust to the movement.

A bit like some top rated players recently against good bowling attacks

Slow start from the Afghans.

It is unlikely to trouble England.

AFG - 21/1 (4.1 overs).

Poor guys face Wood at Perth. Although it is not WACA this still has some characteristics of it.

Batting wise Eng lineup is complete insanity as strong as ever you will see on a paper Mo Ali @8 ridiculous

As long as Afghanistan survive the pp and than rotate strike. Aim for 160 atleast

Wood's pace can be his enemy too. He should stick to hard length. When he missed length against India Krunal Pandya of all the people punished him severely. Then later against West Indies Gayle gave him a severe thrashing.

150ks again by Mark wood.
Pace is pace. Nothing can beat proper fast bowling in cricket. Best sight in cricket.

i though seeing livingstone down there in the line up was ridiculous. Than there is that x factor called stokes.

Sam Curran batting at 9 😱 that’s a very strong order!

Afghanistan should have been made to play the qualifier. They would have struggled in that qualifier round.

Cant blame afghanistan , they have never played on a wicket like this against quality bowling like this.

no they should had not, they would had not struggled. Look at where the team is ranked, they have defeated test member nations.

They dominate the associate levels, the qualifying teams cant beat them.

True. nothing like quick bowler with his tail up and bending his back, putting in the big strides and letting loose some quick ones.
of the ones playing in this wc - wood, nortje, rabada, SSA, nassem , hasnain, starc, hazle, cummins, ferguson, chameera, mustafizzer, thats a good line up to watch out for :)

yeh but, you need to have footwork atleast. Zazai is just waiting to whack the ball.

Gurbaz looked good, and Ibrahim is playing cricketing strokes to get the runs

Hackullah isnt even able to hit stokes. Terrible batting by him

35/1 in 6 overs. NOt at all terrible. Now they will get some buffet stuffs. They should make use of it

Hes batting at 3 and not opening so why would I not like him?

i think i already stated. He is a slower batter, bats at a strike rate of 100-110

finally hackullah is gonee

Hazrat is struggling against hard length balls. Would have never seen such a bouncy surface in his life.

Has mohammad shahzad retired?

yes and plz dont say he should had been here. He is a pathetic batsmen and an unfit keeer. Gurbaz keeps very very well

well not retire, but he doesnt get selected cause he is bad

They should send Rashid Khan as a pinch hitter. He loves these kind of lengths. He has some funky shots up his sleeve.
